I got no problem laying the -164 on the money line with the Cubs. Good bounce back spot for Chicago after dropping their last 3. The biggest key here is who the Cubs have on the mound.
Drew Smyly has been fantastic in his first two starts. Smyly has not allowed a run in 9 2/3 innings (allowed just one walk). He will be facing a Pittsburgh lineup that has managed to score just 2.9 runs/game on the road this season.
Jose Quintana will go for the Pirates and while he's got a respectable 3.86 ERA in 2 starts, he's got a sub-par 1.608 WHIP. He's also got a 4.99 FIP and 4.86 xFIP, suggesting he's pretty fortunate to have a sub 4.00 ERA.
The other big key is Quintana is a lefty. Cubs are hitting just .254 as a team on the season, but .284 when matched up with a left-handed starter. Give me Chicago -164!

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Friday was with the Phoenix Suns minus the point(s) versus the New Orleans Pelicans. Phoenix (65-19) will be playing without Devin Booker who suffered a Grade One hamstring injury in their 125-114 loss at home to the Pelicans on Tuesday. The Suns travel to the Big Easy where they have covered the point spread in 5 of their last 6 games. They have also covered the point spread in 14 of their last 20 playoff games when favored. New Orleans (39-47) has won three of their last four games — but they have failed to cover the point spread in 6 of their last 8 games against teams with a winning record. The Pelicans have also failed to cover the point spread in 5 of their last 6 home games as an underdog. Take Phoenix minus the points. Best of luck — Frank.

The San Diego Padres see the LA Dodgers as their No. 1 rival but for the Dodgers, it's the Giants, dating back to their days in New York. The Dodgers have opened 9-3 (best record in MLB) and the Padres are not far behind at 9-5. The Padres and Dodgers will renew their 'rivalry' Friday in San Diego, the opener of a three-game weekend set. The Dodgers finished with a 12-7 record against the Padres in 2021, a year in which the Dodgers won 106 games. As for the Padres, after ending a 13-year playoff drought in 2020 (37-23 in a COVID-shortened season), they finished 79-83 (27 games behind the Dodgers!).
Friday night's starters are left-hander Julio Urias (0-1, 3.86 ERA) for the Dodgers going up against Padres' right-hander Nick Martinez (0-1, 4.50 ERA). Both will be making their third starts of the season. Urias was MLB's lone 20-game winner in 2021 (20-3 with a 2.96 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 32 starts) in 2021. As for Martinez, he signed with the Padres just before spring training after spending the past FOUR seasons in Japan. Urias gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in just two innings in his first start of 2022 (a 9-4 loss in Colorado) but then allowed one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in five scoreless innings in his second start against Cincinnati (a 5-2 LA win), Martinez has pitched five innings in each of his two starts of 2022, allowing one ER in his first one and four ERs in his second (he's 0-1 and the team 1-1).
"The four seasons in Japan did a lot for Nick," said Padres manager Bob Melvin. "His stuff is sharper and his confidence has grown." However, with Mike Clevinger (knee) expected to soon return to the Padres and rookie MacKenzie Gore pitching well (1.74 ERA in two starts), Martinez could be pitching to save his spot in the Padres' rotation. Urias has no such worries and he's 3-1 lifetime record against the Padres with a 2.63 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and a .181 opponent's batting average in 11 appearances (six starts / team is 4-2). In three starts during the 2021 season, Urias posted a 2-1 record with a 3.38 ERA. Take LA in this one.
