Belmont Horses in Focus for Thursday, April 28
Posted on April 27, 2022 by David Aragona

          RACE 2: CHLOE ROSE (#2)

Stretching out to a mile proved to be the undoing of likely favorite #4 Bella Principessa last time, as she just wasn’t able to see out the distance at today’s level. She’s been most effective as a sprinter on dirt, and now is turning back to a more appropriate trip. The speed figures that she’s recorded this winter are simply faster than most of the recent numbers earned by her competitors. The one concern is that she lacks early speed and there isn’t an overwhelming amount of pace in this race. That may not matter in her current form, but I’d be wary of taking too short a price on this favorite. Among the alternatives are a couple of fillies drawn down towards the rail. #1 To a T has held her form pretty well since the trainer switch to Orlando Noda this winter. However, her speed figures have hit a plateau in recent starts and she was no match for Bella Principessa when they met in February. She bobbled a couple of strides away from the gate last time, which put her towards the back of the pack early. She be more forwardly placed, and it doesn’t hurt getting Jose Ortiz aboard. I prefer #2 Chloe Rose at what figures to be a better price. Her form has obviously fallen off since she won first off the claim for Gustavo Rodriguez last October. One could make the argument that she didn’t like wet tracks two and three starts back, but she failed to rebound on dry going last time. That said, she was meeting an unusually tough field for this level on Mar. 4, as Norman Queen and Tellaperfecttale are both in raging form right now. Chloe Rose has worked well since then and is returning to the site and distance of her last victory. I think she’s worth one more chance if the price is right.

          RACE 3: VINTAGE HOLLYWOOD (#4)

This race figures to set up pretty well for the favorite #6 No Salt, who is clearly the horse to beat. This gelding has been in great form since moving into the barn of Mike Miceli last fall. He did lose all three of his prior attempts at this N2X level, but he was beaten by some pretty good horses in those races, including subsequent stakes winner Water’s Edge. He rebounded with an easy victory against starter foes last time and shouldn’t mind the stretch-out in distance. Furthermore, there’s plenty of pace signed on with three speeds drawn down towards the inside. The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting a fast early tempo, and that could work against his main rival #2 Daddy Knows. This horse is the only runner in the field to have achieved the kind of speed figures that rival those of the favorite. However, his recent form has been tailing off, and he’s again been showing that alarming tendency to drift out in his races. Drawn between two pace rivals, he may struggle to work out the right trip. I think the biggest threat to the favorite may come from #4 Vintage Hollywood. This 7-year-old’s form clearly leaves something to be desired. He’s finished off the board in 8 of his last 9 starts, the only placing being a runner-up finish in a $25k claimer. That said, he does have back class, having won the off-the-turf Kingston last year and achieved some competitive speed figures as recently as one year ago. He’s also making his first start off the claim for Gustavo Rodriguez, who is 6 for 16 (38%, $4.36 ROI) first off the claim over the past 5 years. He figures to get the right pace setup and should be a square price with No Salt certain to attract the bulk of support.

          RACE 5: BUCKORTWO (#9)

#2 Yarrow could go favored for the third consecutive time despite losing as the public choice in his final two appearances of 2021. That said, he’s run pretty well in all of his races to date. He responded well to the gradual reduction in distance last year, so 6 furlongs is the right starting point off the layoff. He had some minor trouble when trying to close two back, but then simply lacked a late punch when nosed out for second at Aqueduct last time. Christophe Clement is 16 for 78 (21%, $1.40 ROI) off 120-240 day layoffs in turf sprints over 5 years. I’m not wildly against him, but I also wouldn’t want to take a short price on this runner. I slightly prefer main rival #3 Citizen K. This gelding got nosed out at the wire by Yarrow in each of his last two starts of 2021. His lack of early speed was a bit of a hindrance in those races, as he simply ran out of ground while finishing best of all each time. I think he’s more naturally suited to this distance than his main rival, but he needs more pace than he got in his most recent start on Nov. 27. It’s possible that he’ll get the right setup in here with such a large field signed on, but Jose Ortiz still must work out a trip. I want to go in a different direction with the 3-year-old #9 Buckortwo. This dark bay gelding is a little light on speed figures compared to the two main rivals drawn inside, but all of those numbers were achieved as a 2-year-old. He has a right to be capable of better returning as a more mature horse. Michelle Nevin is 3 for 16 (19%, $2.25 ROI) off 120-240 day layoffs in turf sprints over the past 5 years She’s also 22-for-105 (21%, $4.66 ROI) in turf sprints at Belmont. This runner adds Lasix for his return, and is getting a rider upgrade to Kendrick Carmouche. I like that he showed improved tactical speed in his juvenile finale, and he has the pedigree to improve, as a full-sibling to turf allowance winner Dancing Buck.

DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, April 28, 2022
            DRF Staff

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:20 BEL 1st EAU CLAIRE's (#5, 8-1) lone start to date came as a 2yo over 500 days ago and she missed all of her 3yo campaign, likely with some kind of issue; that debut run was better than it may appear on paper while making a late run into a slow pace after getting bumped back to last at the start; new trainer has had some success with horses like this from a limited sample - past five years, year+ layoff, turf, route: 3 for 6, $4.13 ROI. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:37 GP 2nd WONTOUGHSUNOFAGUN (#4, 4-1) turned in a game debut, over-coming poor start to pass 11 rivals on route to impressive debut win on the Tapeta. Flashed improved speed while contesting wicked pace switching to turf returning from three month layoff following debut win. Wheels back quicker, returns to synthetic, could step right back on winning track in this spot. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:49 LRL 3rd CORAL SUMMER (#5, 8-1) must improve as she's had her share of chances at this level, but she showed a hint of life two weeks ago at Charles Town. Tracked the moderate fractions from the pocket in a race dominated throughout by the two leaders, then eased outside for a one-paced finish. She has enough speed to get close to the pace here. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:11 GP 3rd MOONQUEST (#5, 9-2) a 4-year-old taking on mostly younger rivals and exiting what appears a needed outing here last month. Should sit a trip off what could wind up a contested pace. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:26 LRL 4th MAIL CALL (#7, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:36 KEE 4th WORLD OF WONDER (#3, 6-1) claimed out of last race for $30K, freshened, in for $40K - that's a good start. Trainer G. Forster with most recent sample of first-claimed horses is a strong 16-3-5-3, so even when they're not winning, they're racing competitively. Similar story regarding "blinkers on" with this barn. The last two dirt races were two turns but she won her career debut, her lone dirt-sprint start. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:50 BEL 4th KARNAK (#9, 6-1) was first back from a long layoff last month at Gulfstream when getting out-paced going five furlongs and just keeping on evenly in the stretch once moving wide; parlayed a good trip into a maiden win prior to the layoff at Tampa; in the right kind of spot making his second start back and can pull a better trip here with a little added distance. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:08 KEE 5th GOLD HERITAGE (#3, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:13 GP 5th SWEET PEARL (#5, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Welsch). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:40 KEE 6th Looks like a salty maiden sprint and ONE TIME MO (#5, 10-1) is sure to be a big price. Bred more for turf but out of a very good broodmare who has produced No Fault of Mine, a debut sprint winner; Ready to Pounce, a second-start MSW winner at KEE; and Ready for Change, an 11 1/2-length debut sprint winner. Jock comes from Chicago to ride. Might sneakily be live. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:50 BEL 6th BELLA DOMENICA (#6, 5-1) broke her maiden in a slow race when switched from turf to dirt last summer, then managed only two more starts before the layoff; might have run the best race of her career off the bench last time when chasing a front-running winner gamely and almost holding for second; threat if she can run as well in this spot, with others in here to do the dirty work after a projected fast pace. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:02 LRL 7th MAVILUS (#4, 9-2) received a nice ride from Maclovio Enriquez, Jr. when pulling off a big upset 13 days ago. Pressed the pace along the rail, eased back off the potential pace dispute to save ground from stalking range, then re-rallied up the fence to score. Perhaps it was simply the trip that led to the career-best Beyer, but he's been consistent for most of his career and should offer a playable price. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:12 KEE 7th WHENTHEDAWNBREAKS's (#10, 10-1) debut win was stronger than the Beyer figure and she did not quite look like a fully formed product while still just missing a second win while facing winners for the first time. Freshened and pointed to this big-money allowance. The dam was a graded turf-stakes winner over 11 furlongs and her other foals to race have shown the same true turf-route characteristics. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:24 BEL 9th SHESADANCINGQUEEN (#1, 12-1) a War Dancer half to six turf winners debuting in a field with little turf form showing; Nevin excels with turf sprinters and has scored with a few firsters under similar conditions at prices recently - past 3 years, first time starter, turf sprint: 3 for 16, 19%, $6.41 ROI. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:33 TUP 5th FANCY GI GI (#5, 10-1) just ran better and now ends up in a barn that is 60% off the claim, 17% sprint to route, 12% on the dirt, 14% in routes, and 16% with their claimers. Both career wins for this filly have come at today's mile distance. Race flow isn't the best but it isn't pace-less either. Expecting a nice price for this filly. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:05 TUP 6th EASY DOES IT (#1, 6-1) took 25 starts to break her maiden but then won for fun. We bet this mare got a taste of winning and liked it. It is obvious that two turns on the dirt is what she does best. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:07 TUP 8th JOE'S PASSION (#3, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:40 WBS (Harness) 3rd HANG ON BABY (#1, 5-2) faces similar to those that she easily handled in leg 1 of this series and she is a good bet to repeat here. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:55 YR (Harness) 4th ANGELS FOLLY (#8, 9-11) finished third to the impressive Yanaba on 4/15 at the Meadowlands, and you can see the astronomical driving/training percentages Trond Smedshammer has at Yonkers so far this year. – Greg Reinhart

Keeneland Picks: Talented Novel Squall ships from Oaklawn on April 28
              By J.N. Campbell

              Keeneland Picks - Thursday, April 28, 2022

              Race 1: 7-4-5-2/2B
              Race 2: 10-12-4-11
              Race 3: 3-5-6-2
              Race 4: 8-7-4-6
              Race 5: 8-4-2-3
              Race 6: 12-10-1-4
              Race 7: 10-7-4-5
              Race 8: 1-3-6-5
              Race 9: 7-5-1-11
**Most Likely: Polyglot #7 (Race 9)**
**Best Value: Whenthedawnbreaks #10 (Race 7)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 9: Polyglot #7, 4/1):

Follow me down the path on this one … a Juddmonte homebred … by Kitten’s Joy … 1st time starter for Chad Brown … ridden by Flavien Prat on the turf … against a field that appears inexperienced … At M/L odds of 4/1, this sounds like the makings for a debut score. Brown is particularly strong in spots like these, and we know the bloodlines speak to handling this surface rather easily. Prat’s ability to take on a chore like this one seems sound too … If I could get this kind of price, I would consider it an overlay. I do not bet 1st timers that often, but this one seems too good to pass up.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Whenthedawnbreaks #10, 10/1):

If you are looking for a price on this Thursday card, then you cannot go far wrong with Brad Cox and Florent Geroux on the grass. Lightly-raced, this filly by Ghostzapper comes to Central Kentucky after running in a pair of route races on the Stall Course down at the Fair Grounds. Breaking her maiden on debut was solid, and she followed that up with an impressive jump in class against a OC50kn1x group. She was 3rd … so that speaks to a building-block race. Cox isn’t a 2-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer for nothing … he gave her time off in February and March, and now she returns to the track with a solid work tab under her saddle. Against a field like this one … stretching out to 1 3/16ths … it could be the best play of the day!

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #10 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6

Belmont Park Picks: The beast awakens on April 28
                By J.N. Campbell

Belmont Park Picks - Thursday, April 28, 2022

                Race 1: 6-4-1-3
                Race 2: 1-4-6-2
                Race 3: 2-7-6-3
                Race 4: 9-3-5-12
                Race 5: 3-2-5-9
                Race 6: 9-8-1-5
                Race 7: 5-3-1-2
                Race 8: 9-6-3-5
                Race 9: 6-4-3-2
**Most Likely: Daddy Knows #2 (Race 3)**
**Best Value: Competitive Saint #5 (Race 7)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Daddy Knows #2, 5/2):

The former member of Ray Handal’s outfit came over to Jeff Englehart’s barn in February, and the gelding by Scat Daddy ran well 1st time out … winning against state bred types at this very level. His next couple of races were duds, and it will be good to see him stretching out at Belmont. Trevor McCarthy gets the call again, and he had a nice run over at Aqueduct. I think if he can get his mount out of the gate cleanly, then he has a shot either to be on, or close to the lead. That should give him a great opportunity to win the day. This one has 8 starts at Belmont over the course of his career … no wins … but he does have 4 “Places” and 1 “Show!”

                Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Competitive Saint #5, 12/1):

The folks at Valor Farm made a shrewd decision when they purchased Competitive Edge for their stallion program. He is a proven producer, and continues to churn out some impressive offspring. Here is a gelding by the sire that ran nicely at Aqueduct against some tough company. The 5-yr-old gelding did not win any of the 4 races he entered, but there were some bright moments. I think coming to Belmont is just what he needs, and trainer George Weaver has him in-form. As I mentioned, jockey Trevor McCarthy just turned in a solid season at “The Big A,” and he should be able to take advantage of the pace scenario … I think it will be fast … giving his mount something to run into … The Edge … for the win at 12/1!

                Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #5 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 7F, Starter Handicap20k, 3+):

It is nice to see the return of Belmont’s season, but also a “Starter Handicap” on this Opening Day card. You will find several drawn-in here that raced on “Claiming Stakes Day” @AQU on 26 March. Mike Maker’s Doubly Blessed #6 was solid going 1 Mile that afternoon, winning with Manny Franco aboard. The son of Empire Maker should be ready to fire again, and it makes sense to use this one in any horizontal wager. I am not sure 2/1 is the kind of price I want to accept, so instead, I am going to the outside, putting my faith in the Ferraro Barn’s Easy to Bless #9. There is much to like about this filly, besides the fact that she is taking on the boys. Her AQU record was solid, even though she was 5th in her last spin around the track. In her defense, that was against G3 Co., so she gets a pass. Dropping into this spot seems spot-on, and of course, who doesn’t like the fact that Jackie Davis is back-in-town to rider for this solid conditioner. Let’s use this one on top at odds of 8/1, and also roll under Tom Morley’s Dark Money #5, and Gustavo Rodriguez’s Ryan’s Cat #3. That should complete the line … check out this bet …

                Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 9 w 3/5/6 w 3/5/6

Rocket Picks : Keeneland, Gulfstream Park, and Belmont Park for April 28, 2022

Let’s kick off another great week of racing. For the free pick 4, we will head to Keeneland for the late sequence on the card. We will also have full card selections for Gulfstream Park and Belmont Park for OPENING DAY for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s go!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Keeneland:

                  Keeneland April 28, 2022

                  Race 6: Allowance Optional Claiming

#1 Patna was a solid third on debut last time out despite a poor trip. Look for her to move forward off of that race today, while she was also defeated by a very nice horse in that race. #2 Smugness debuts in this spot for DeVaux, who is proving to be a solid trainer. She does well with first time starters.

                  Race 7: Claiming
                  freestar

#5 Beside Herself drops down in class for this race after taking on Grade 3 company at Gulfstream Park last time. This should prove to be a much easier spot. #1 Shad Nation runs second off of a layoff today, while also taking a drop down in class.

                  Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Red Ghost gets back to the dirt for this race after two lack luster efforts over the synthetic. Last year she won the Miss Preakness Stakes over the dirt. #1 Novel Squall won an allowance at Oaklawn Park two races back before finishing third in a stakes event last time out.

                  Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming

#7 Polyglot debuts for Chad Brown in this spot, with Flavien Prat up for the mount after a series of solid workouts. This horse is bred to be a very nice horse. #1 Blue Devil was a solid second on debut and should like the move over to the synthetic surface today.

An engaging eight-race program at Pakenham awaits punters this Thursday night. The first four races on the card are maidens, with the quaddie starting at race five at 7:45pm. The last of eight commences at 9:15pm with 13 runners participating, with many of them in-form horses.
                    BEST BET: BRITISH COLUMBIA

This Grahame Begg-trained galloper failed first up at Caulfield, but we will forgive that run. His efforts prior in stronger races were solid when he was a winner at Sandown Hillside, before running a good fourth at Mornington. Jordan Childs is back on board and he did get the win on him at Sandown, so he knows what the horse needs to do. He just got too far back last time, which made it hard to get into the race. From a good barrier in four that shouldn’t be the case here, and Childs should have him pressing to the line from the 400m mark. Despite carrying a hefty weight of 60kg, he is down in class and the one to beat.
                    Best Bet

                    Race 7 – British Columbia#1 British Columbia

                    $2.35 with Neds

                    NEXT BEST: AMPERE

Barrier one will help Ampere in this event and we expect that he should position up in the first few, preferably behind the leader. He started favourite when second here on debut and Mick Kent would have put the polish on him to go close again. The rise in distance to 1400m shouldn’t be a factor, and with many of her rivals failing to place in their first few starts, this looks to be a suitable race. Ethan Brown gets the ride and shouldnt have any real issue positioning up nicely as long as Ampere jumps with them. Stavanager for the in-form stable of Team Hawkes will be a competitive rival, as will Jolie Christine from the Begg yard.

                    $2.05 with Ladbrokes

                    VALUE BET: ALFOIL

Leon & Troy Corstens combine with this grey gelding who is second up from a short freshen up. Last time he was second up from a similar freshen up he got the money at Yarra Valley. Last start at Echuca over 1400m he was fair to the line but we are counting on the fact that he normally needs a tune up before hitting his straps second up. He’s an on-pace runner and we expect he will settle close again from barrier six. He won’t be huge odds, but with quite a few live chances we still think he will be overs.

HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections for the eight-race program at Wyong on Thursday, April 28. Wet tracks have plagued the state in recent months, and that is once again what we have to deal with – a Heavy 9. The rail is out 4m from the 1350m to the 1000m mark, and then just 1m for the remainder of the course. The first of eight races is scheduled to jump at 12:20pm AEST.
Best Bet at Wyong – Oxford Vision

Kim Waugh and Rory Hutchings combine in the opener with a nice three-year-old gelding in Oxford Vision. The son of Panzer Division has raced four times for three seconds and a third, with those runs all coming behind some handy ones. In his past two outings, the gelding has been beaten by a lip – both at this track and distance – so we are confident that he can go one better on Thursday. Antonio Giovanni was the last horse to beat Oxford Vision, and that galloper has some nice Group form around Forgot You and El Patroness, so he is no slouch.
                      Best Bet at Wyong

Race 1 – Oxford Vision Silk #3 Oxford Vision (1)

                      3yo Gelding | T: Kim Waugh | J: Rory Hutchings (58.5kg)

                      $1.85 with Ladbrokes
Next Best at Wyong – Gwan So

Gwan So broke his maiden on April 8 at Canberra in his third Australian outing, and we think he can now go on with it. The Annabel Neasham-trained three-year-old colt was given a great steer by Brodie Loy on that occasion, which saw the son of Ulysses dash away in the straight to win by just shy of a length. He defeated Vaaroom on that occasion, and that horse just won by four lengths on Friday, franking the form of Gwan So. The step out to 1600m should suit, while barrier three is once again ideal for him. He can continue to rise through the grades.
                      Next Best at Wyong

Race 5 – Gwan So Silk #1 Gwan So (3)

                      3yo Colt | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Brodie Loy (59kg)

                      $3.50 with Bet365
Best Value at Wyong – John Of Lancaster

John Of Lancaster is one three-year-old who has been crying out for a trip, and he finally gets it on Thursday. The son of Tavistock might not have much ability, but he will stay all day, as his breeding suggests, so the rise to 2000m looks suitable. Trained by John Thompson, the gelding has form around Raging Bull and Satirical Glory which reads reasonably well on paper for a Provincial Maiden. Last start, Bayliss took the three-year-old forward from barrier three and he was outsprinted over 1600m, so we are hoping to see similar tactics used here. From barrier eight, John Of Lancaster can roll forward and make this a genuine staying test, and he may just pinch it.

Race 3 – Carif Silk #6 John Of Lancaster (8)
