2nd race – (1) Lone Rock won this race last year and looks to be in a similar form now. Looks like a deserving favorite. (2) Current has experience at the distance and should be the main rival. (4) Tenfold will be a factor on his best try. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box1-2-4.
4th race – (1) Regal Retort was hurt by a wide trip last time and should be fine from the rail with a drop into a claimer. (4) Dance Rhythms had no chance after a poor start and deserves a second chance here. (5) Recoded missed by a half-length at this level and should be a prime contender. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5.
6th race – (3) Baby Quinn returns from nearly a year-long layoff but has been working quickly and seems best at this claiming level. (2) Teo should get some attention while tackling claimers for the first time. (7) Leagal is worth a look in his career debut. (4) Lunar Rocket missed by a neck last time and cannot be ignored. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-7. Doubles: 2-3-4-7 with 1-5-6-9.
7th race – (5) Pioneering Spirit (C) dropped from 8-1 to 5-1 and closed fast for second. Should welcome the added ground here. (1) Jeeper (A) was checked on the backstretch and lost about six lengths then rallied nicely for third. Runs in an entry with Consulate and looks like the one to fear. (9) Gate Runner didn’t fire in his debut. May like this trip better. (6) Curbstone has some speed and may be dangerous if left alone on the front end. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. 9th race – (4) Strollin the Bayou can use his speed to lead gate-to-wire here. (3) Enchanted Nile fits in nicely with this group. (7) Aura could shine in this spot. (8) Sariah Sariah was second against cheaper but should not be ignored here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-7-8.

DOLLY'S LINE - Molina should be able to get this filly to break out early in this contest. Ought to be carefully examined for this event if only for the quite good speed rating garnered in the last contest.

Jeremy Plonk: Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw Rapid Reaction

A total of 22 runners entered the 148th Run for the Roses at the post-position draw held this afternoon at Churchill Downs with a capacity field of 20 starters. Race favorites, Louisiana Derby winner Epicenter and Blue Grass victor Zandon, will begin from posts 3 and 10, respectively.

The impact of the post-position draw has been slightly lessened with the advent of the 20-horse starting gate in 2019. The new gate creates more breathing room from the inside and outside rails among the crowded lineup. Still, no Derby winner won from the rail since Ferdinand in 1986 and from post 2 since Real Quiet in 1998. Posts 17-20 account for only 4 victories (one of those via disqualification) since a starting gate was first used in 1930.

Expected pacemakers in this year’s Derby are Tampa Bay Derby winner Classic Causeway (post 17) and United Arab Emirates Derby runner-up Summer is Tomorrow (post 4). Reaction to their draws. That they are inside-and-outside at near extremes, the pace could ratchet up a notch as they hustle for position.

Californians Taiba and Messier drew posts 12 and 6 and should be forwardly placed in the early hunt. Japan’s representative, Crown Pride, begins from post 7. He had a gate training incident where he took a left-hand turn and dumped his rider, so perhaps caution be to Messier.

Trainers Brad Cox (Cyberknife-16, Zozos-19, Tawny Port-18) and Todd Pletcher (Mo Donegal-1, Charge It-8 and Pioneer of Medina-11) make up 30 percent of the field with a half-dozen entrants. Cox won last year’s Derby when Mandaloun was promoted to victory following the medication disqualification of Medina Spirit. Pletcher is a two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer (2010 Super Saver, 2017 Always Dreaming). Mo Donegal will have to overcome a rail that hasn’t won on the first Saturday in May in 36 years.

Post time for the Kentucky Derby will be 5:57 pm ET as Race 12 of 14 on a card that begins at 10:30 am ET. Advance wagering on the Kentucky Derby begins Friday at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet.

#2 Current He may end up playable as something like the second choice here, and some of his recent tries hint he might like this long trip on the main track.
#1 Lone Rock His very best stuff leaves the rest of these running for second, and he's the clear one to beat at what will be a short price. He might still be a couple lengths off his 2021 best so far this year.
#4 Tenfold Millionaire has plenty of back class to him, but he couldn't reel in Lone Rock at Oaklawn last time out, and his best chance would come if the top pair were to hook up a bit earlier than they should.
Race Summary Current turned in a nice dirt score at Hawthorne last month, and he should get a perfect trip tracking the likely pace and chalk from the fence. He should be the one to take up the running if the favorite falters.

Churchill Downs - Race #5
Picks Notes
#3 Gambling Cat A little interested here at a price, as she's likely to keep the tactical edge on most of the other logical players, and her best turf tries keep her in the frame today at a fair offering.
#2 Flirting Bridge I'm assuming action on the tote will hint that he's live as he makes his first North American start for a capable team. She has been in with some better company than she's going to find here, and it'd be no surprise to see her land this one.
#8 Breaker of Chains She's got a big claim on this one after a couple stakes tries to close out her 2021 campaign, and her formidable late kick makes her the one to fear late. Wondering what kind of jump she'll give some of the others.
Race Summary Gambling Cat looks interesting at a decent number while getting back on the grass, and she should be able to use her tactical pace to get a head start on some of the other likely players.

Churchill Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#1 Gallant Guy Let's see if he can run back to that big effort over the Keeneland turf last month, as he finished well that day and might be meeting just enough pace to set things up for another rally. Why not?
#4 On Your Mark He should get a decent go of things from a bit off the splits today, but he's tactical enough to stay in the frame early on. Wouldn't be a shock to see him win right back. Two deep race with a little price swing?
#7 Bad Beat Brian He seems among the more likely winners, as he gets down in class after a trio of stakes tries in recent months. He's capable of something better than that last one.
Race Summary Gallant Guy popped a good race at this trip at 56/1 at Keeneland in his most recent try, and while he's no sure thing to back that up, the price should still be appealing enough to give him a look in hopes they just found the right trip for him at this point in his career.
