            #6
Belmont Park Hotlist - May 15

            May 14, 2022

Today’s New York Hot List races to watch – Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Belmont Park
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
            Hot List Key:
            A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
            * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi] – (2) Digitize (B) was second in his debut last month for Chad Brown at Aqueduct where he had a rough start clipping heels and then raced greenly. (1) Nabokov is another Brown runner that had a strong debut with his coming at Keeneland when he had the lead in the stretch at odds of 2-1. (4) Predicted moved from turf to dirt in his second start of the year and was much improved since the main track is his best surface. (6) Braille will make his third start for Shug McGaughey. He was fourth in his December debut and then tried the Tapeta at Gulfstream Park last month when he was fourth again.
3rd race [NY, Md 40000, 6F] – (7) Hereby returned from a 10 month layoff, pressed the pace in a maiden special weight, and finished third in a race that was meant for the grass. With that good result, Christophe Clement leaves him on the main track. (2) Got the Gold has a pair of seconds at this level including last time when he dropped back to this claiming level. (4) Couples Therapy is a son of Outwork making his debut. His dam produced 5 winners from 7 to race including a NY-bred stakes winner of $471,000. (8) Kingstown set the pace in his debut last month at Aqueduct at odds of 9-1. His early speed will certainly help in this field.
5th race [Md 40000, 1 1/16 TURF] – (8) I Am the Law has two good maiden special weight starts following a layoff and gets Joel Rosario now as he drops into a claimer. (4) Bail Out looked like he was finally going to get his elusive maiden win when he had the lead in the stretch coming off a layoff. Is this the time for the veteran with 26 starts? (1) Hooky Player returns from a November layoff when he was fourth for a $50,000 tag. He was third in his first two starts in maiden special weights at Monmouth Park. (2) Strike Price set the pace in his debut last month at Aqueduct and now gets Flavien Prat.
6th race [Alw 92000 N1X, 1 1/16 mi] – (4) Perceived (C) was bet down from 4-1 to 2-1 and maintained his form with victory in a starter allowance. With four career victories he is still eligible for this first-level allowance. (3) Dr Ardito won his last three starts for Chad Brown and in doing so used up his NY-bred conditions. He recorded the highest speed figure in the field last time. (7) Jerry the Nipper has two races back from a year layoff for Todd Pletcher when back then he won both of his NY-bred allowances. Last month, he was second in a recent allowance. (8) American Rule has improved significantly which has been the case with the entire Noda barn since Belmont opened. He will move up from success in open claimers.
Best bets: Digitize (1st); I Am the Law (5th). Best value: Hereby (3rd); Perceived (6th)
            No. Name Letter/
            last race
            Today's Race Comments
            (2) Digitize B on 4/16 1 Rough start in debut then raced greenly and was second.
            (4) Perceived C on 4/10 6 In fine form right now for Rudy R.

              Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
              * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (5) J Zertz returns to a claimer and looks best in this spot. (4) Kiss Me Smile won impressively last time and should be the main rival. (2) Cairo Driver can land a share of the purse. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5. Doubles: 2-4-5 with 1-6-9-10.
2nd race – (9) Sosua Summer tired in a stakes and finished fourth. May not be caught here. (10) Chasing the Crown is improving and will be a main threat here. (6) Corrente de Ouro may like the added distance. (1) Faith Runner will benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6-9-10.
5th race – (13) Her World (C) dropped from 3-2 to 6-5 and finished a close third after an 8-month layoff. Should be poised for a win here if she can draw into the field. (5) Cruz Bay missed by a head and is the one to fear. (8) Only Kidding was second in her last three tries and belongs in the exotics. (7) Bout Time should not be ignored off two solid starts on turf. Betting strategy: 13 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-7-8-13.
7th race – (3) Kitodan seeks a fourth straight win and is well-spotted here. (1) St Andrews looks like the one to catch in this field. Has an entrymate in Brooklyn Diamonds who is a main track only starter. (7) Play Action Pass should be a stretch threat here. (8) Double Clutch exits a sharp maiden and merits consideration. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-7-8.
9th race – (1) Spare Cash seems ready to graduate from the maiden ranks after three straight second=place finishes. (5) Spring Magic stepped up with a third-place finish last time and will be a top contender. (6) Macadamia should benefit from a switch to Talamo. (11) Elle of the Ball will appreciate a return to turf. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-6-11.
No. Letter/Last race Today’s race Comment
              (13) Her World C, 4/15 5 CD Dangerous if she draws in

                RACE 4: KLICKITAT (#3)

I would imagine that both Christophe Clement runners will take money in this NY-bred optional claimer, and I’m not particularly fond of either from a wagering standpoint. #2 Straw Into Gold probably wants to go a bit farther than this and I thought he should have won last time after getting a nice trip stalking a moderate pace. #8 Panster may have a bit more upside as he two races second off a layoff. He didn’t have much closing punch going 6 furlongs last time, but that race was dominated up front. They both make some sense, but I thought there were similarly talented options at better prices. #6 Chulainn might have a better closing kick than both of the Clement runners. I thought he ran pretty well at this level last November, closing determinedly between horses when he finally found daylight. Seven furlongs might be a good distance for him, since he’ll get more pace up front. I’m also intrigued by #5 Not Phar Now returning from the lengthy layoff. He ran a big race in his lone turf start almost a year ago, which came over today’s course and distance. Runner-up Turn of Events exited that race to have success, so he beat a nice rival. This is a big ask off the layoff, but he may have the talent to pull it off. My top pick is #3 Klickitat. He’s a solid fit at this level, having run well in similar spots multiple times in the past. He didn’t even run that badly first off the claim for Mike Maker when he tried the much tougher Mohawk late last year. He subsequently failed to show up at Gulfstream, but that course just doesn’t suit him. He’s now returning to New York and cutting back in distance. Mike Maker is 8 for 37 (22%, $2.45 ROI) going from routes to sprints on turf at Belmont over the past 5 years. If he shows up with his good race, he’ll be tough to beat, and the price should be fair.

                RACE 6: SOUTH STREET (#6)

I have no major issues with #3 Dr Ardito, who is very logical as he seeks his fourth consecutive victory for the Chad Brown barn. It’s not easy to advanced right through New York-bred allowance conditions into open company, but this grey gelding has improved with each successive start. I do wonder where his ceiling lies since he earned a big speed figure last time and is now stepping up to meet a tougher field. I’m not against him, but I didn’t feel the need to take him at a short price. I am a little more confident in his trustworthiness than likely second choice #7 Jerry the Nipper. I can’t fault this horse for losing to the talented Pipeline last time, and he was chasing wide against a strong rail. However, he barely held off Uncle Moonlight for third and that rival wouldn’t exactly be that formidable in this affair. He could receive some early pressure from Perceived or American Rule, and I haven’t loved the way he’s finished in either start since returning from a layoff. I’m instead going for a bigger price with #6 South Street. This 3-year-old obviously needs to improve from a speed figure standpoint, but he does have plenty of upside. I thought he was pretty game to get up for the victory at Aqueduct two back despite coming into the stretch with plenty to do. He was subsequently flattered when runner-up Awesome Aaron came back to win. I don’t want to get too caught up in the margin of defeat in the Tesio last time, since he got a pretty uncomfortable trip that day, ridden into traffic on the backstretch before getting shuffled back. He’s better than that and figures to get somewhat ignored in the wagering.

RACE 7: NEW YORK GIRL (#10)

This optional claimer came up unusually tough for the N2X condition, and Chad Brown has a couple of strong contenders. Both #2 Love and Thunder and #9 Flighty Lady have run well enough to make them competitive here, but have also been a little disappointing during their U.S. campaigns. The former settled for second when she should have won on more than a few occasions last year, but she was pretty impressive winning over this course in October. She projects to get a good trip and is dangerous off the bench. I slightly prefer her to Flighty Lady, who wasn’t beating a particularly good field at Aqueduct last April. She subsequently failed to step forward, though she might not have appreciated a yielding turf course at Saratoga last summer. An intriguing new face in this affair is #5 King’s Harlequin, who makes her U.S. debut for Christophe Clement. As a 2-year-old, she defeated subsequent Group 1 winner Sealiway, as well as G3 winner Harajuku. She was very game in the G3 Prix de la Grotte two back, as she got passed in mid-stretch but re-rallied to almost come back for the victory. Christophe Clement, who is 5 for 33 (15%, $1.20 ROI) with foreign shippers off 180+ day layoffs over the past 5 years. My top pick is #10 New York Girl. She showed excellent form when she first appeared in this country, just missing to some classy foes like Micheline and Blowout in Grade 2 races. However, she put in an inexplicably poor effort in the Just a Game and hasn’t hit the board since then. Though her form may not be quite as poor as it looks. She did have a serious spot of trouble in that Aug. 1 allowance race at Saratoga before going to the bench. Then last time she just got too far back in a race that was dominated on the front end, but was finishing best of all. I think she lands in a good spot and could go off at a square price.

                          Race 9: 4-2-11-8
**Most Likely: Flighty Lady #9 (Race 7)**
**Best Value: Three Jokers #2 (Race 6)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Flighty Lady #9, 7/2):

Mr. Peter Brant owns some good ones, and this mare by Sir Percy (GB) is no exception. You might remember her from last year when she came to the U.S. for her debut, after running in France. Irad Ortiz was aboard then, and will be as she starts her ’22 campaign. The distance and class test off the bench should not be an issue because Chad Brown is such a powerful planner when it comes to conditioning. With a strong kick, she should be ready to fire … Maybe we will catch a break? When it comes to the odds, most bettors will be concerned that she “needs one.”

                          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #9

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Three Jokers #2, 6/1):

Ever since this John Terranova son of Twirling Candy switched back in December from running against state breds to open company, he has steadily improved. Certainly, his last effort at Aqueduct which ended up off-the-board (12-lengths back), was not the best of trips … Yes, he was tired, and failed as the favorite. Now, is the time for redemption, and with Luis Saez replacing Dylan Davis, I do not think that is a downgrade whatsoever. If the price on Terranova’s entry is 6/1, then that would qualify as an overlay.

                          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, Gold Fever S., $100k, 3):

I am pretty fond of races like this one at Belmont on Sunday. This six-pack is going to be tough to ‘cap, and I am sure that Todd Pletcher’s Provocateur #3 will take significant money. It is only because of the HOF conditioner, but also because this is a MyRacehorse-part-owned runner. These runners get backed at the windows to the hilt, and it brings the price on them way down. The colt by Into Mischief is 5/2 on the M/L, but I doubt that will be the case when post time rolls around. I know Irad Ortiz rode him impressively at Gulfstream Park in the Hutcheson S. $100k. There is no question about his level of talent, but I like another one in this race. John Toscano has a small, but effective stable … Runninsonofagun #2 might not look like much, but he’s got it where it counts. An alum of the Grade 3 Gotham S., after that contest, his conditioner brought him down to Parx for a tune-up race. Winning easily, it was a solid confidence booster. Moving up in class, he is going to be a superb price, and there is no better stretch-running jockey that is as aggressive as Luis Saez. If he can keep his mount close to the lead, then it could be a strong play. His latest bullet work is icing on the cake, and it would be excellent to see a smaller barn make a big splash against the titans. Here we go folks!

                          Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 2 w 3

Rocket Picks : Churchill Downs, Santa Anita, and Belmont Park for May 15, 2022
                            By: Jared Welch

Let’s close out the weekend strong today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Belmont Park for the late sequence on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Churchill Downs for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s go!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Belmont Park:

                            Belmont Park May 15, 2022

                            Race 6: Allowance

#2 Three Jokers can win in this spot if he bounces back from a poor effort last time out. Stretching out in distance and getting back to Belmont Park should help his chances, while Saez jumps aboard for the ride. #3 Dr Ardito will look for his fourth straight victory in this spot; however, must step up to face open company.

                            Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming
                            freestar

#9 Flighty Lady runs off of a layoff in this spot, but that usually does not bother Chad Brown horses, while her speed figures are solid. #2 Love and Thunder is another Chad Brown entry with Flavien Prat aboard. This mare drops back down to allowance company after running against stakes horses in her last two starts.

                            Race 8: Gold Fever Stakes

#3 Provocateur will look for his second straight stakes victory here after a very nice effort last time out at Gulfstream Park. #4 Fluid Situation was an impressive maiden special weight winner at Tampa Bay Downs last time out and should match up well with this group today.

                            Race 9: Maiden Claiming

#4 Mispelled Mooon has a clever name, while also running well in her last two starts. She was a solid third at this level and distance last time out. #2 Laugh and Play will take a big drop down in class for this race, while also cutting back in distance.
