The second leg in the Triple Crown happens this Saturday. Sorryfully to say the Derby winner Rich Strike will pass on this race and enjoy the extra time needed to prepare for the Belmont. The team involved feel this is best and felt if they would have had another week, he would have been ready. But not the case, and now they will have three more weeks following the Preakness this Saturday. Good news for the connections.

So, with no Triple Crown on the line this year, here’s a glimpse of who I like to take down the 2nd jewel of the crown.

#3 – Early Voting = Speedy son of Gun Runner who is showing good things from the breeding and is coming off a 2nd off the layoff effort after making every pole a winning one except the final 70 yards where he was bested by Mo Donegal at the wire. – I see good speed, but nothing like we saw in the Derby. I think the added ground will be his undoing, but none the less he will be setting an honest pace.

#7 – Simplification = Ran a solid race at CD and came on to finish 4th only 3 1/2 lengths. Trouble for me is he couldn’t get there going 1 1/4 and now we’re going 1 3/16. He’s a gamer, but not for the win spot on my tickets.

#6 – Secret Oath = Winner of the Ky Oaks for D Wayne (can still train) Lukas. – She faced the boys two back in the G1 Arkansas Derby and circled the field in Arazi fashion and drew off by two solid lengths in the Oaks. Ultra-impressive and 3/4 with wins excluding the G1 Arkansas Derby where she was a beaten favorite. – She is in the top five gals I have watched race. – Dangerous wildcard.

And the winner is:

#4 – Epicenter = Toss out his first start and there is very little not to like. – The Asmussen trainee is tough and has the proper running style of being an up-close stalker. – Joel Rosario fits like a glove and wins 24% with stalking sorts. He should relish the distance and will be just off the leader putting a target on his back. He knows there is going to be a calvary charge behind him and will not let the fractions get out of hand.

There are 6 meetings in Britain and Ireland on Wednesday, with competitive flat action at Ayr, Cork, Kempton and Yarmouth. The 2.45pm at Ayr is likely to be the best quality action, with a valuable listed prize over 1m2f sure to attract some of the bigger southern yards to Scotland chasing the excellent prize money on offer. Jumps fans have the cards at Warwick and Southwell to study, with the latter getting underway at 5.15pm and rain much needed to ease the currently quickening ground conditions.

He will not mind at all if the ground eases at Ayr on Wednesday (unsettled forecast), and remains open to plenty of improvement in handicaps this season after just seven career starts.

#3 K C Rocket He'll rise back into the protected ranks after being taken out of that $30,000 Oaklawn try, and the way he ran over the turf in New Orleans gives hope that he's going to like it on the synthetic here, too.
#1 Crowley's War He only showed a bit of late interest in the debut, but he's probably better with this group of locals, though there is a major concern about the nearly two year layoff. Would want a good look at him on the track, but it's at least a good sign that he returns in special weight company.
#6 Lightning Charlie He went evenly in both starts here last year, but maybe he's better here in his 3-year-old season after working at Tampa in advance of this comeback. Not impossible.
Race Summary K C Rocket should be tough to handle if he likes the local footing, and there's no real reason to think he won't. He has some tactical pace and might bounce back after a couple dull efforts over an Oaklawn course he may not much care for.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 Paid the Preacher He has some proving to do off the easy win at FanDuel last out, but he woke up in a big way that day when getting Lasix in his first start as a 3-year old. This is probably one of the softest entry-level allowances you'll see here on class all summer, so he's not impossible.
#2 Runaway Star Something like his October graduation run would keep him in the mix, but he's rising off the layoff and figures to get bet. He has at least been pretty consistent, but I wouldn't want too short a price here.
#6 Pure Spring He has landed shares with similar in the past, so his best stuff stacks up nicely here, but he'll need to fire fresh today after tailing off to end his 2021 campaign.
Race Summary Paid the Preacher steps up for this along with almost everyone else, and I'm willing to give him a chance to prove that he's a better horse now than he was last year after scoring that 57/1 upset in pretty convincing fashion.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#5 Conquesthardcherry She's worth a little swing off the layoff, as she has a little bit of tactical pace that should leave her in a really good spot while tracking a few pace players. The price should be right to see if she can run well off the bench like she did last year.
#8 Checotah She draws well near the outside of this while able to flash some pace, but she's now known for passing horses late, so she might be a tough sell if she gets looked in the eye turning for home.
#3 Poquito Rose She should be in line for a nice trip spying the speed, and she's an obvious player here after hitting pretty hard with similar over this course last fall. Chance.
Race Summary Conquesthardcherry should be a price off the layoff, but I wonder if she might get towed into the pace a little bit and stick around for a piece with a grinding effort late.
