Belmont Park Picks: OC80kn3x R8 the focal point on May 22
    By J.N. Campbell

Belmont Park Picks - Sunday, May 22, 2022

    Race 1: 5-6-2-4
    Race 2: 2-7-5-10
    Race 3: 3-4-1-2
    Race 4: 8-3-5-1
    Race 5: 4-8-12-11
    Race 6: 7-2-4-1
    Race 7: 6-4-1-3
    Race 8: 2-8-6-4
    Race 9: 7-5-3-6
    **Most Likely: Cara's Dreamer #2 (Race 2)**
    **Best Value: Wolfie’s Dynaghost #3 # (Race 3)**

    Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Cara’s Dreamer #2, 5/2):

Looking at Race 2 on the Belmont card, I am pretty keen on Mitch Friedman’s filly by The Factor. That sire has produced some excellent turfers, and this 4-yr-old already has a positive record at this class level. Last year, she race-on nicely in a couple of Belmont “Non-G” events against other state breds. With Dylan Davis aboard, this one looks like a winner to my eye.

    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

    Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 3: Wolfie’s Dynaghost #3, 8/1):

It is great to see Tom Albertrani’s colt by Ghostzapper come back to NYRA after a stint down in Florida at both Tampa and Gulfstream. I was impressed with his run in the Appleton S. (G3) last time out @GP. He ended up rating nicely, and was 2nd to Phantom Currency … a solid turf horse. Jose Ortiz was aboard then, and will do so once again! That was a major move, and I am hoping that this 4-yr-old gets overlooked on the tote. At odds of 8/1 … that would be an overlay.

    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 7F, OC80kn3x, 3+):

There is a swell-looking race on Sunday at Belmont that should be a solid betting race. It has a good field of 8, and it might be safe to say that this is anyone’s game. My guess is that Bill Mott’s Fortin Hill #6 will be close to the top of the tote come post time, and it is because he was 3rd in the Sir Shackleton $100k down at Gulfstream Park in early April. Jose Ortiz gets the call, and dropping into a spot like this one makes a ton of sense … It is going to be a “tote watch” on this one because if he ends up being below 9/5, then that is going to be too short. If that happens, I am much more interested in the running ability of Rob Atras’ Mr Phil #2. This gelding by Mr Speaker came to this barn from the Ryerson camp, and it was a good claim. The sprinter is 2/2, and looking for a 3rd win in-a-row. Regular rider Kendrick Carmouche was scheduled to ride him in the Maryland Sprint S. (G3) at Pimlico against Ray Handal’s Disco Pharoah. Atras “punted,” and decided to scratch … enter here. I think he can win in this spot. I will use him on top, then use Mott’s entry in the “2nd” position … and … you guessed it … let’s take the rest of the field underneath for the “Show.” This is going to be a slugfest, and should be the race to watch on Sunday.

    Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 2 w 6 w 1/3/4/5/7/8

DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, May 22, 2022

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:13 MTH 3rd ROCK THE STARS (#9, 6-1) is easy to like after missing by just a neck in his latest (and in his career debut); he also ran well for the show two back, when he had to try to close from far back after racing well off the pace in he opening stages, and though he was off the board in his other start he had some trouble in the 1 1/8 mile race, which featured slow splits. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:32 BEL 2nd CLASSIC COLORS (#7, 4-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:11 MTH 5th FAIR CATCH (#7, 5-1) was off the board against a deep field in the King Leatherbury Stakes at Laurel last time out when he tried to rate off the pace and make one run but he figures to come out running in his Monmouth debut, and he should be an immediate factor; perhaps still quick enough to make the lead in the opening stages. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:03 LS 2nd PRINCESS PHONE (#6, 5-1) was second at this level last time and is a logical choice back. She's also appealing as a three-time winner facing some less-experienced foes. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:09 MTH 7th ON THE COUCH (#5, 7-2) was well off the pace in his first and only route try on the grass last time out but that was a race that featured several frontrunners, as evidenced by the inverted "C" in the DRF running line; he now lands in a race void of pace, and while he may or may not make the lead today he should be expected to be much closer to the pace, and that will be an edge if the tempo is in fact controlled. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:13 LAD 2nd APPRECIABLE (#2, 6-1) gets the double whammy of the blinkers ON and a weight break with the apprentice up. Her return try wasn't anything to write home about but she did finish the race unlike her debut. Second time with this barn can only help. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:21 GP 5th VEIL (#8, 5-1) stays put off the claim and working well for very potent connections with new faces. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:25 WO 5th SOBERANO (#4, 6-1) rallied towards the inside for second over an outside-favoring track when cutting back from a Tampa dirt route to a seven-furlong Tapeta sprint here May 6. Note that he earned his highest Beyers around two turns on synthetics. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:41 LAD 3rd ALYS EPISODE (#3, 12-1) did run well in her last two turf starts and they came here at this distance. Some of her Delta tries were decent and she is certainly in shape. We spy a local work and a good price to round out the appeal. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:56 WO 6th TUFF RAGS (#8, 8-1) is debuting with a quality stamina pedigree for a top trainer with a 14% strike rate with first-timers in synthetic routes during the past five years ($1.20 ROI). His works weren't bad and Hernandez has good numbers for KA. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:08 BEL 7th VIENNA CODE (#1, 8-1) has improved considerably dating back to the end of last year, though her development might be masked somewhat by a series of wet tracks; has won her last two allowance starts over fast dirt, including a dominant win over this distance in December with a 76 Beyer. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:59 WO 8th MASTER MCGRATH (#5, 10-1) was in tight between rivals early in the stretch before getting up for third in a May 1 N1X, his first start since beating $30K maidens over Turfway's Tapeta two months earlier. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:12 BEL 9th STARRYSTARRYKNIGHT (#3, 6-1) ran well going a mile vs. a tougher field in his turf debut., then cut back to sprint last time at Aqueduct and was no match from up on the pace with a horse who improved suddenly out of a dismal debut; drops for the first time and catches a race that might be run at a moderate pace. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:33 LAD 7th LET IT B (#8, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:19 LS 9th MORE LIKE IT (#3, 5-1) goes from five-eighths to two turns and the last time he made such a distance move he ran one of the best races of his career. -Mary Rampellini

Sunday TimeformUS Highlight Horse: Cara’s Dreamer can step forward second off the layoff
Posted on May 22, 2022 by David Aragona

          Belmont | Race 2 | Post Time 1:32 p.m. (ET)

The Chad Brown-trained #5 Marvelous Maude figures to go favored again here, as she’s usually pretty popular at the windows. Amazingly, 5 of the 6 runners entered for turf in this spot all met up in a race at this level nearly 6 months ago on Nov. 27. A close viewing of that affair is essential handicapping information for this race. Marvelous Maude achieved the best result that day, finishing ahead of the four rivals she meets here, while checking in second. She arguably should have won, as she was never inside and had to cover plenty of ground on the turns while launching her bid. This filly is lightly raced and has moved forward with each turf start. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the layoff since the barn is one of the best in the business with this move.

She’s the one to beat, but I prefer the fourth-place finisher from that Nov. 27 event who figures to be a better price. #2 CARA’S DREAMER finished 3/4-length behind Marvelous Maude that day, but she also got a wide trip and ran better than it seems. She’s not exactly a win machine, but she always shows up with a good effort regardless of the company. She really stepped up her game in the second half of last season, as she picked up a couple of stakes placings over this course. She also has a recency edge on some others, having gotten in a prep at Aqueduct. She closed well, but was cost a victory by having to alter course to the far outside in upper stretch. If she can work out a smoother journey here, I think she can find her way to the winner’s circle.
          THE PLAY

WIN: #2 Cara’s Dreamer, at 2-1 or greater

Jim Feist's Comp Pick, SUNDAY, MAY 22, 2022

              5/22 10:35 AM PT / 1:35 PM ET

MLB (917) SEATTLE MARINERS VS (918) BOSTON RED SOX

              Take: (917) SEATTLE MARINERS

Reason: The Seattle Mariners have dropped three-straight games to a 17-24 record and fourth place in the AL West. The Mariners have also lost five of their last six and could be swept here today by the Red Sox. Logan Gilbert will start for the M's with a 4-2 record and 2.60 ERA. Gilbert has been even better on the road where his is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA. The Boston Red Sox have won four straight to improve to 18-22, but still are four games under the .500 mark. Nathan Eovaldi will start today with a 1-2 mark in his eight starts and a 4.32 ERA. Eovaldo had been doing great his last five starts before his last one. He had given up just six runs in five games and then was blistered by the Astros for six runs over 1 2/3 innings in his last start. Gilbert is about the best the M's have and if he can't get a win for them today then they are in trouble. Your free play is on the Mariners.
