Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

The feature at Hoosier Park goes in Race 9, an Open Pace with a $22,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

5-Big Gulp (7/2)-Odds-on winner last week steps-up and should be in the mix. Could take a picture if #7 doesn't mind his manners.
7-Goldie's Legacy (5/2)-Faces better after taking command off the gate going to the half in 53.4 and then drew off by 6 lengths. The speed is there but take steps at times. Does appear a clean trip away from the 2nd win of the season.

Race 12

1-Rogers Image (9/2)-Even effort in the 1st start in town versus a well-meant winner. Should be better after a race at the track and has 7 wins in 31 HoP starts.
3-Kneedeep N Custard (5-1)-Has been in too deep in all 5 starts this meet but may have found a beatable field tonight. Widger sticks with this Cullipher trainee and best to not overlook.

Race 13

1-Odds On Osiris (12-1)-Drops to a more comfortable level and finally draws inside. Likes to race near the top of the stack and should land there.
5-Alwaystellthetruth (7/2)-Drops to a soft spot and looks like the one to beat. Has hit the board in 31 of 52 starts at HoP with 10 wins. Bates may look to leave, get on the point, and make every call a winning one.

Race 14

5-Uncmprmising Z Tam (7/2)-Drops to the lowest class in some time and this could be a wake-up call. Local veteran should be in the hunt at the wire.
7-Yankee Bounty (8-1)-This 10-year-old showed some life in last when dropped to this level but didn't have the best of trips. Wilfong could work a smoother journey and the price should be right.
10-Ima Real Ladys Man (9/2)-Dropped to this level last week but was compromised by starting from post 10 and Bates sticks. Did roll by 5 foes late in the mile and will include versus this crew despite drawing poorly again.

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 4-Real Fire; 7-Belle Cherie; 6-Encolpion

Forecast: This appears to be a stronger-than-par maiden turf sprint for fillies and mares, with two comebackers and a first-timer catching our eye. Real Fire acts like a quick filly; she brought $360,00 at the OBS April sale last year after a very impressive :10 flat breeze in the preview session. She also trained quite well at Del Mar last summer (including a :59 and change gate work) but had to be stopped on. Her recent works have been slow and easy (while never being asked) but she retains her early speed and should be a live item for a barn that has solid stats with debut runners. “Go to” rider J. Hernandez takes the call. Belle Cherie displayed good speed before fading in the lane in her only start last summer at Del Mar in what was one of the hottest maiden juvenile filly sprints of the meeting. She returns with Lasix for S. Callaghan (excellent record with layoffs) and has done some smart work in the a.m. that should have her plenty fit. The daughter of Nyquist remains highly-regarded and projects to settle into a good stalking position from her outside draw and then have dead aim and every chance from the quarter pole home. We have not seen Encolpion in the morning but she shows a series of strong workout that indicate some talent. First-timers from the P. Eurton generally need a race, but we’ll use her on a ticket or two as a back-up or saver for protection.

Notable Workouts:

Real Fire (May 4, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4h). Grade: B+
Under strong restraint every step of the way while stride-for-stride outside Heywood’s Beach (same time) for J. Sadler, splits of :12.4, :25 flat, :36.4 and 1:01.4 while certainly able to go a whole lot faster if permitted. Looks fit, trained very well last summer at Del Mar as a 2-year-old but never made it to the post.

Belle Cherie (April 16, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.2h). Grade: B+
Caught her last month in team drill outside Bellamore (5f, 1:01.2h), breaking off at least five lengths behind and then finishing head-and-head at the wire, slower than given but very nice nonetheless while never being asked a drop at any stage, splits of :12.1, :23.4, :35.4 and 1:01 flat on our watches, under cruise control through the lane. Had a run last summer at Del Mar (speed/fade in a hot race) before being stopped on, coming back well and absolutely is much better than her first race shows.

RACE 2: Post: 1:37 PT Grade: X
Use (in order of preference): 4-So Softly; 5-Harddiane; 1-Ardis

Forecast: We’ll pass this bottom-rung maiden claiming main track miler for fillies and mares while going three-deep (in a five-runner field) in rolling exotic play. So Softly was beaten as the favorite in a tougher maiden $40,000 affair last month but has numbers that fit against this modest group. She will most likely inherit a stalking trip behind Ardis and then have her chance when the pressure is turned on. Harddiane has no acceleration but she always tries hard. In the frame in her last pair under similar conditions, the daughter of Hard Spun should settle in the second flight and then grind away from there. Ardis gets in with a feather, removes blinkers, draws the rail, and seems certain to employ gate-to-wire tactics. She shows a race three back that gives her a look.

RACE 3: Post: 2:09 PT Grade: X
Use (in order of preference): 2-Del Mar Drama; 1-Dancing Dana

Forecast: This starter allowance turf sprint for fillies and mares should boil down to a pair of familiar faces. Del Mar Drama (TOC=8/5; ML=2-1) and Dancing Dana (TOC=2-1; ML=5/2), two-three finishers behind Gallovie in a similar event last month, square off again and are hard to separate, as they finished heads apart the last time they faced each. ‘Drama galloped out much stronger and is a tad faster on speed figures off her best effort so we’ll give her (slightly) top billing. However, either one could win, so both should be used in rolling exotic play in a race that we’ll otherwise pass.

RACE 4: Post: 2:43 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference: 1-Superman Shaq; 5-Catbernay; 4-Big Scott Daddy

Forecast: Superman Shaq (TOC=6-1; ML= 5/2) went sour last summer and was stopped on but has looked a bit more like his old self in recent workouts so perhaps he’ll return invigorated and remember how well-regarded (and fast) he was in his younger days. This is his first time in a claimer, and at this restricted (nw-2) $25,000 level they’re not exactly given him away, so let’s put him on top and hope that he breaks cleanly from the rail, gains early control, and then gets brave. From a limited sample, this barn has done very well with layoff runners and this gelded son of Shackleford has been given enough of a foundation to be fit and ready. Big Scott Daddy (TOC=3-1; ML=2-1) has a prior win over the local main track and appears on paper to be the most dangerous of the closing types. He remains well above his claim level in a sign of confidence from trainer J. Wong, who generally is quite realistic when placing his stock. You also may find the need to toss in on a ticket or two Catbernay (TOC=2-1; ML=7/2), second in his last three starts with competitive speed figures but making his first start following a claim by a low percentage outfit.

Notable Workouts:

Superman Shaq (May 22, Santa Anita, 4f, :51.2h). Grade: B-
Went off in a crawl (:14 flat), then gradually picked it up but was never asked at any stage while moving well and appearing nice and relaxed, :26.3 and :52 flat on our watches. Slow work for sure but can’t knock it. Once was very quick and highly-regarded, been away since last summer and seems to be returning in a good state of mind.

RACE 5: Post: 3:14 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 3-Frontier Market; 2-Proud Pedro

Forecast: We’ll try to survive and advance using just two in this $25,000 claiming miler for older horses, though not with a great deal of confidence. Best advice is to use as many as your budget allows. Frontier Market (TOC=2-1; ML=4-1) Proud Pedro (TOC=4-1; ML=3-1) is another late-runner with a chance if things break his way. Away since October and dropping realistically into a seller for the first time, the L. Powell-trained import will find this distance a bit sharp, but against this group he might fire a big shot off the bench, a slow and brief recent work tab notwithstanding. In a race full of question marks, we suggest you tread lightly.

RACE 6: Post: 3:45 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 2-All Four Winds; 5-Divine Armor

Forecast: All Four Winds (TOC=7/5; ML=9/5) crushed a modest maiden-claiming field in an abbreviated sprint earlier this month in just his second career start, doing so with speed figure that is better than par for this starter optional claiming level. Similar gate-to-wire tactics surely will be employed in this two-turn miler, so if he can shake loose early and relax midway, the son of Grazen may be able to win right back despite the class hike. Divine Armor (TOC=8/5; ML=8/5) lacks a winning punch – he is 1-for-16 lifetime – but his numbers are strong for the level and he is a first-time gelding. If our top pick doesn’t see out the trip, he is the most likely to pick up the pieces.

RACE 7: Post: 4:15 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 5-Gritty Girl; 3-Spanish Channel; 2-She Loves Karaoke

Forecast: Gritty Girl (TOC=2-1; ML=3-1) is the quickest of the quick and is a perfect one-for-one at this five furlong distance. She drops into a restricted (nw-2) claimer for the first time, has a prior win over this course and distance, and continues to train well for J. Mullins. It will probably be “hold your breath” time in the final 70 yards, but hopefully this daughter of Street Boss will have built up enough of a lead to hang on. Just in case, you may want to include on your ticket a couple of backups. Spanish Channel (TOC=6-1; ML=5-1) is winless in 34 races when facing thoroughbreds, her sole victory having come against mixed breed foes at Los Alamitos. She also is zero-for-19 over this turf course. Hard one to like? Certainly, but she is one of the few in here that can finish a bit. She Loves Karaoke (TOC=5-1; ML= 7/2) is another that usually runs on a bit late, so if there is a pace meltdown she should be in a good spot to make some noise late. Like Spanish Channel, she is technically a maiden against thoroughbreds, here sole first-place finish earned in a mixed-bred maiden dash at Los Alamitos a couple of months ago.

Notable Workouts:

Gritty Girl (May 20, Santa Anita, 4f, :47.3h). Grade: B
In blinkers, under wraps in solo training track drill for J. Mullins, final three furlongs in :11.3 and :35.1, quite nice. Has all of her speed, definitely a need-the-lead type.

RACE 8: Post: 4:45 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 2-Poseidon’s Kid; 8-Hotrod Kid; 5-Vanisky

Forecast: Poseidon’s Kid most recently was a distant second to a runaway winner in a fast, highly-rated sprint in an effort that produced a career top speed figure. This will be his first start around two-turns and he is certain to employ gate-to-wire tactics in this modest maiden $50,000 affair for state-bred older horses. If the son of Richard’s Kid is going to handle a route of ground, it most likely will be in his first try, and based on pedigree this extra distance should be well within his range. Hotrod Kid improved his Beyer speed figure by 15 points between his first and second start, so with another forward move the son of Clubhouse Ride should be right there. He’ll be running on late. Vanisky finished second in the same race Hotrod Rid exits but has had five chances and probably has less room to improve. His form suggests he should at least hit the board, but the J. Bonde-trained son of Vronsky has never been known to punch it in under pressure.

RACE 9: Post: 5:15 PT Grade: B+
Single: 2-Ghostem

Forecast: Ghostem (TOC=3-1; ML=4-1) earned a confidence-building win from straight maiden Cal-bred foes earlier this month but is eligible for this starter’s optional claimer because she previously had started for a tag. She set quick fractions (opening quarter in :22.41) over this course and distance and kept on going (final furlong in :12.24) when earning a career top speed figure, so similar front-running tactics certainly will be employed again, especially in a field with no other speed signed on. She’s listed at 4-1 on the morning line and at or near that price she is a win play and rolling exotic single.

BELMONT LATE PICK 4 ANALYSIS
Friday May 27, 2022

Belmont racegoers will have to be in a New York stake of mind to handicap the 50-cent Late Pick 4 on Friday. Two of the races in the sequence – including a 12-horse maiden claimer on the turf -- are for statebreds and the remaining two races feature three New York breds at single-digit odds on the morning line. Here’s a look at the action:
BEL 6th race (3:34 EST) -- STONE CREATOR chased and held second behind stakes three-peater Yo Cuz (3-5, $399k) at 7F and one mile, then was overtaken by a 27-1 longshot in a 1-1/16 mile allowance after she took the lead while in-hand at the 3/8-pole and gave way in the final furlong. She breezed 4F in :48 since her last start, wears blinkers for the first time and holds a tactical advantage over her main rivals. GALLINA will need all the pace she can get in her first start since February. She launched a bold rally inside rivals on the final turn, shied twice in the stretch from a left-handed stick but straightened out in time to pass by Norman Queen (2-4, $82k), one of three easy winners to exit that 7F race in the slop.
BEL 7th race (4:08 EST) -- COUSIN ANDREW had a nightmare trip when he last sprinted on the turf in the winter. He lacked running room throughout and finished full of run between rivals in a double-key race. JUULSTONE, no threat in a fast allowance in his first short sprint try on the turf, worked forwardly leading up to that race and adds blinkers today. His dam, Hessonite, was 9-18 and a Grade III winner on the lawn, albeit going a route of ground. FAST N FEARIOUS ran away from a weak field, but he enters a barn that wins with 27 percent of its claims and 30 percent of its turf sprinters, so use him. BLAME THE BOOZE, targeted for the turf from the onset of his career, followed an appearance in the 2020 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint as a 2-year-old with only one start last season, a troubled third in a one-mile allowance. He, too, can awaken in the Wesley Ward barn.
BEL 8th race (4:40 EST) -- FOREST CARAWAY won a 6F, entry-level allowance off a 10-month layoff as a 3-year-old, now begins his 4-year-old season after 8 months away. He debuts for trainer Todd Pletcher off a series of strong workouts at Saratoga. ELOQUENT SPEAKER rallied 4-wide to win an allowance off the claim, then dueled and just missed in a 7F stakes race against hard-hitting NY-bred Bank Sting (7-10, $487k), before he failed as the odds-on favorite in a 2X allowance. ROSSA VELOCE ranged up 4-wide and pulled away to foil BETSY BLUE’S three-peat attempt and surpass $100k in allowance earnings this year.
BEL 9th race (5:12 EST) -- Go deep in this maiden claimer on the turf. TEMPERMENTAL, unhurried until late turn and blocked in early stretch, split rivals to finish second as the favorite. JET SET JULIET led until late in a promising debut last fall but hasn’t run since that main-track dirt sprint. Her dam won 3 of 4 races to start her career but was unraced on turf. WAR IN PARADISE contended until the stretch in a pair of crowded turf routes and is a viable price on the cutback in distance. SWEET LIES took money with first-time Lasix, raced 5-wide after a bumpy start and faded in a one-mile dirt race that produced two, next-out MSW winners. COOLCATSNKITTENS gets Lasix for her seasonal debut for a barn that boasts percentages of 20-plus with second-time starters, turf sprinters, MSW droppers and 180-day layoff types.

Charles Town - Race #6
Picks Notes
#7 Unrequited Love She won her only local start, and she looks likely to be the controlling pace from this outside draw. The other forward players have some ability to settle, so this filly makes sense on what will hopefully be a send mission.
#2 Boundtobebad She should be right up on the splits here, and she looks like the one to beat after posting a 34/1 upset in state-bred stakes company. The price probably gets a LOT shorter this time around, and I'm not sure she's all that better than a few others in here.
#6 Mady Rose She's a pretty reliable finisher, but she has been busy settling for a long string of underneath pieces, so she seems a bit more likely there again than on top.
Race Summary Unrequited Love should have a go for it from the high draw, and she looks like a decent fit with these off the recent Laurel races. Guessing she's the one to catch into the final turn.

Charles Town - Race #7
Picks Notes
#6 Strormin Rocket He doesn't have a super high ceiling compared to some of these, but he's a pretty reliable type with some versatile ability to adapt to what unfolds in the early going. Think he's just a bit overlooked here.
#8 Happy Years Love the way he stepped back up with a good effort last time out, but I worry he's going to be a bit too far back in the early stages to get all the way over the top. Capable player, but the price gets a lot shorter tonight.
#3 Penguin Parade His last two have been sharp, but this group feels a bit more evenly matched than this guy's likely price would indicate. Can't argue here, but I'll try someone else at a better price.
Race Summary Storming Rocket has good positional pace and might be able to draft in behind the pace to find a winning trip, and this feels like a race that could really go several ways, likely offering a couple interesting prices.

Charles Town - Race #8
Picks Notes
#2 Brian's Avenue There is almost zero early speed in here, and this guy brings a bit of forward pace that might actually leave him on the front end. Either way, he should be in a perfect spot on the run into the far turn, and I think he'll hold off the finishers.
#7 Another Victory I dunno -- he finished with some energy in the first start off the claim while facing much better, and now he plunges in for a fifth of the claiming price while returning off a three+ month break? Obviously anything close to his baseline wins this, but do you trust him to bring it in the face of all these red flags?
#3 He's Not Curly He's an honest finisher who likes the local footing, so he's an obvious danger in here, but I have a couple concerns about his very inconsistent running lines. Best keeps him in the mix.
Race Summary Another Victory is the kind of horse who I will let beat me all day long, as he's taking a giant red flag plunge after being last seen in February, and it's not like he was a cheap riser before that -- this is a major drop with one work since the early February run. You can have him. Brian's Avenue should flash a little bit of pace early on here, and the hope is Another Victory takes enough cash to keep the price fair on the pick.

Race Summary Rockabilly Charm flashed speed off the gate, drifted extremely wide into the first turn, lacked running room in the middle half and finished with good energy while 5-wide. He can spring his third upset in his last five starts with a clean trip. Play 4-5 and 4-10 exactas.

Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #7

#3 CHERYL’S SHADOW Rallied for third at 55-1 and 6-5 odds in her last two starts.

Race Summary Saulsbrook C Horse took back to ninth early, was held up by stalled cover through the middle half, then showed some late interest while 7-wide in the stretch. Like her a lot in her second start after eight months away. Bet to win and place.

2^nd race [Clm 40000, 7F] – (5) Glory Road was a winner last time in his first start off a claim by Orlando Noda and comes back in a similar spot a month later. (6) Its All Relevant has two wins in a row for Rudy Rodriguez in a $25,000 claimer and then a starter handicap. (4) Full Court Press ran twice this year in allowances and now drops in for a tag and cuts back in distance to seven furlongs where he has a past victory. (1A) Lafitte’s Fleet was claimed from a third at Keeneland for $25,000 last month and will make his first start in New York.
3^rd race [Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (5) Frosted Oats will return from a September layoff for Bill Mott and goes back to the turf where last year he was third at Saratoga. (1) Devilly was third last time at Keeneland and before that tried to rally at Gulfstream Park on a turf course that generally favored forwardly placed horses. (2) Osiria was third last month behind a horse that came back to win her next start. (6) Bali Belle will cut back in distance for Christophe Clement with 3 board-hitting finishes from 5 career starts.
6^th race [NY, Alw 80000, 1 mi] – (4) Gallina has 2 wins from 2 starts earlier this year and now comes back from a February layoff for the Bond barn. (5) Stone Creator gets blinkers on after three consecutive place finishes following a debut victory last year for Charlie Baker who is very good at keeping his horses in top form. (7) Caragate broke her maiden at Aqueduct and then was third in a NY-bred stake before being overmatched in the Gazelle (G3). (3) Gringotts was claimed from a $25,000 open claiming race and gets a rider upgrade for her new barn.
7^th race [Clm 50000 N2L, 6F TURF] – (7) Storm Shooter made her turf debut and finished second behind a horse that won his second race in a row. He was claimed for $30,000 last time by Linda Rice. (4) Fast N Fearious was a winner on the front end by four lengths and was claimed for $40,000 and now makes his turf debut. (11) Ghostlyprince comes back from a year off as a new gelding after racing exclusively at Gulfstream. (6) Blame the Booze ran in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and then raced once last year in August and was third in an Ellis Park allowance.

1st race – (3) Summonyourcourage is a firster from Pletcher who is working sharply for his debut. Gets the nod here. (6) Charlie Whiskey is another firster with some potential. (2) Justafever put in a quick gate work for this. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6. Doubles: 2-3-6 with 1-2-3-7.
2nd race – (3) Reed Kan drops in class and has enough speed to lead throughout. (1) Soul Streit may be a threat off the Sharp claim. (7) Richiesgotswagger makes his debut for Diodoro and deserves a look. (2) League of Shadows may be a threat at this level. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-7.
5th race – (10) Fieldstone (B) returned from a layoff a bit lethargic and then rallied wide late. Should move forward off that try and be more competitive here. (1) Monologue drops into a claimer and should be a top threat. (9) Wing Commander has speed and could be tough to catch. (2) El Socio will be formidable in a claimer. Betting strategy: 10 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-9-10.
7th race – (10) Five Prizes was second in her last two dirt races and should graduate today. (11) She’s Keen has been moving forward and is worth a close look here. (4) Dance It might improve on a wet track. (6) Runaway Wife should be a factor in the stretch. Betting strategy: 10 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-6-10-11.
8th race – (3) Red Ghost returns to turf and may lead throughout. (2) A G Indy can rebound after a poor effort last time. (4) Risky Reward fits in nicely here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4.
