2nd race – (6) Top Recruit debuts for Maker and seems ready to win at first asking. (9) Kigali is another firster with potential. (12) Johannes could be hard to catch in his debut. (4) Fadethenoise is another firster from Maker who may have some talent. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-6-9-12.
4th race – (4) Mrs. Nushi returns to a claimer and looks best in this spot. (5) Rio Lady was second in her last four starts. Why not five? (8) Willamina cannot be ignored off the Diodoro claim. (2) Mejthaam was second last time and merits a look. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-8. Doubles: 2-4-5-8 with 5-8-9-12.
5th race – (3) Voliero was a game second on Tapeta and should welcome a return to turf. The (1) entry of Uninvited Guest and Stockpiler should be the main threat. RACE 2: PRECURSORY (#7)
#2 Aunt Naughty is probably the horse to beat on the basis of her runner-up performance going this distance last time. She’s had more chances than a few of her rivals here, but she fits the mold of a typical Shug McGaughey runner that’s been brought along slowly. My only issue with her is that she benefited from riding a rail bias in her last start, so her improvement might not be legitimate. I’m still not way against her, and could even upgrade her if she’s not favored. There are a few second-time starters in this field worth considering. The two that figure to attract the most support are #8 Veronica Greene and #3 Milan’s Girl, who both hail from powerful stables – Chad Brown and Brad Cox, respectively. They both have pedigrees that suggest they should improve with added ground, but I wasn’t thrilled with their debut efforts. They’re also coming out of slow races of dubious quality, so I was reticent to take either one at a potential short price. My top pick is another of the second-time starters, #7 Precursory. Whereas Brown and Cox have fairly mediocre statistics stretching out maidens, Bill Mott is 7 for 21 (33 percent, $2.83 ROI) with 3-year-old maiden second-time starters going from dirt sprints to routes over the past five years. This filly ran like one who needed a race on debut as she showed good tactical speed and was battling on late, just unable to make up ground over a sloppy track. She has plenty of stamina on the bottom side of her pedigree, so I like the stretch-out. She also has the tactical speed to be forwardly placed while getting a rider upgrade to Joel Rosario.

RACE 4: TOMMY GUN (#4)
Chad Brown has been awfully dangerous with his dirt horses at this meet, and he sends out another live runner here in likely favorite #10 Asymmetric. Let’s not fault him for losing to the talented Overstep in his career debut. He did lose as the 1-2 favorite in his second start, but he was racing wide against a rail bias that day and probably ran better than the 91 TimeformUS Speed Figure indicates. He’s returning from a lengthy layoff, but Brown excels with this move. I’m not against him, but he’s going to be an awfully short price and some others in this field figure to offer better value. I can’t bring myself to give another shot to #3 Devil Boy, who looked so promising at the start of his career in 2021. However, gate issues have plagued him in every single start. He probably did need a race off the layoff last time and can do better here, but another slow break could seal his fate. #6 Conquist returns from a layoff similar to the favorite, having not been seen since last November when he made his career debut. He ran pretty well that day, making an early move into a fast pace that fell apart. That should be an effort he can build on, but John Kimmel has poor stats off layoffs. I’m going in a different direction with #4 Tommy Gun. This George Weaver trainee showed excellent early speed in his career debut, dueling for the lead with the eventual winner before fading. He earned a strong 101 TimeformUS Speed Figure for that performance, and horses have returned from that race to validate the strong rating. Tommy Gun is one of the few who regressed out of that March 31 event, but he had an excuse in the NYSS stakes last time, hitting the gate at the start and being unable to make the lead. Now he gets a rider upgrade to Irad Oritz Jr. and lands in race that doesn’t feature an abundance of pace.

RACE 8: ZELENSKYY STRONG (#8)
The Wesley Ward-trained #4 No Nay Hudson is arguably the one to beat in this Tremont after impressively winning his debut by four lengths at Keeneland. However, he got away with a very slow opening quarter that day before sprinting through the stretch. He’s going to have to deal with much more early pressure this time while stretching out an extra furlong. Furthemore, Ward is having an uncharacteristically dull year with his 2-year-olds in 2022. He’s just 4 for 26 (15 percent, $0.70 ROI) with all 2-year-old starters so far this season. This horse also has a strong turf pedigree, so I wonder how far he’ll be able to progress on dirt. #5 Valenzan Day and #7 Two of a Kind also figure to attract support following debut wins. The former had to work hard to put away a Ward trainee before drawing off. Two of a Kind may be the quickest of all in the early stages after he broke sharply from the rail in his debut and never looked back. That hasn’t yet come back as the strongest race, as the runner-up regressed in his next start. Though he’s obviously a danger if able to shake loose up front, I prefer the runner drawn just to his outside. #8 Zelenskyy Strong could go off at a bigger price than the aforementioned colts. Like No Nay Hudson, he got away with a slow opening quarter before drawing clear impressively in his debut. He didn’t appear to be facing much at Gulfstream, but he finished up like a horse that could appreciate more ground despite racing on his left lead throughout. He’s bred to be a good one as a three-quarter-brother to multiple stakes winner Jackson. He also picks up Irad Ortiz Jr. for Peter Walder, whose runners have generally improved or run back to their Florida form when shipping to New York in recent months.

On a cold wintery afternoon where the mercury is only tipped to reach a high of eight degrees, Ballarat will host a nine-race card. The track will be a Heavy 10 and the first race will start at 12:25pm, with the last going at 4:30pm. The quaddie races kick off at 3pm, with race six the first leg.
BALLARAT BEST BET: HOUSE SPOUSE

After three runs back from a spell, this Patrick Payne-trained gelding is ready to win now. We will likely get small odds, but anything close to even money might be worth a bet here. After four jumpouts and three races this time in, House Spouse is pretty fit now, and after a good second at Sale on May 25, he is ready to win again. Payne has chosen to keep House Spouse at the mile, and if he settles in a similar spot to last time (around third), we think he can hit the line stronger in this race. His last two runs on Heavy tracks have been unplaced, which is a slight concern, but he did win his maiden on Heavy ground in 2021. Sunday Buzz from the Symon Wilde stable is sure to have had plenty of training on Heavy tracks around Warrnambool, so he is the main danger.

This daughter of Frosted x Merge is trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who are among the leading trainers in Australia, and is largely on that fact we are going with this filly. She’s only had two career starts for a second and fourth on Good surfaces, so how she handles the wet is an unknown. When second at Geelong over 1200m she was only beaten less than a length, before being backed to win at the same track just weeks later when fourth. She’s had a good five months off, but you could see in both of her races she does have ability. Her main rival will be Devil’s Fiddle, who started $6 on debut with online Bookmakers when running third.

She is first up today and her best chance is if there is early pace on, as she is one that likes to settle back in her races. We will be wanting each-way odds from the betting sites for this one.

Gosford is set to host eight provincial races this Thursday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst has picked out his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting. The track is rated a Soft 7 and should play evenly throughout the day with the rail in the true position. The first race is set to get underway at 12:10pm AEST.
Best Bet at Gosford – Po Kare Kare

Po Kare Kare, a filly by Savabeel, has had just the three starts, running third twice and winning stylishly at only her second career start back in January. Following her maiden win, Heys sent her for a spell, before she resumed on the Kensington track on May 18 with a respectable third. She came wide under James McDonald that day and it just wasn’t the place to be, so we are happy to forgive her for that. She does have a bad barrier (13) to contend with on Thursday and 61.5kg is a big weight to carry, but it is a reasonably compressed weight scale and she does look to be a fair bit better than these, so we expect her to go close.

Next Best at Gosford – Boomsong

Mark Newnham and Tom Sherry combine in the fifth race of the day with the talented Boomsong, who comes back to 1000m following a narrow defeat when favourite over 1200m on May 17. Whether or not it was a case of the winner being too good, second-up syndrome, or just the 1200m being a bridge too far remains to be seen, but now third-up and back to 1000m should leave the three-year-old gelding with no excuses. The son of Your Song will find the front from barrier two and take plenty of catching at a track he should appreciate.

Best Value at Gosford – Foolish

If you are prepared to put a pen through Foolish’s 25-length defeat last start, the Kim Waugh-trained three-year-old could be a decent betting proposition in race three. The son of Nicconi usually leads in his races or is at least handy, but the chances of that were thrown out the window when he was tardy out of the gates on May 19 at Hawkesbury, so he settled last on the fence. He seemed to clip heels or cop a check inside the 600m, causing him to lost more ground. Jay Ford eased him out of the race in the straight, and he didn’t take part. Forget that and go to a recent trial at Gosford on June 3. He jumped well, held the fence and kicked clear to win it by over half a length, so we are prepared to say last start was an abnormality and he is better than that. At big odds with online bookies, this gelding can go close to winning his maiden on Thursday.
