Saturday's MLB Free Pick: Colorado Rockies +115
I'll take my chances with the Rockies as a +115 home dog against the Padres. Colorado took the series opener 10-4 on Friday and I look for them to cash in again on Saturday. I believe there's value here with the starting pitching matchup.
Colorado's German Marquez comes into this game 3-5 with a 6.09 ERA and 1.515 WHIP over 12 starts. However, he's trending in the right direction. In his last two starts, he's allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings at San Francisco and then just 2 runs on 6 hits in 7 innings at San Diego. His strong start vs the Padres is nothing new, as he's now 9-3 with a 4.16 ERA and 1.221 WHIP in 14 career starts.
Nick Martinez will get the ball for San Diego. Martinez has been rock-solid for the Padres, but numbers don't matter when you are starting at Coors Field. Martinez's only career start at Colorado was back in 2015. It didn't go well. He gave up 7 runs in 4 innings. I think he struggles again in his first start back at Coors. Give me the Rockies +115! Confidence Rating: 5 (Scale of 1-10)
Dave's Saturday Free Play:
1* on Colorado Rockies +110 The Key: I like the price we are getting on the Colorado Rockies at home dogs to the San Diego Padres tonight. German Marquez is 2-0 in his last 2 starts against the Padres and Giants while yielding only 5 earned runs in 13 innings. Marquez is now 9-3 with a 4.16 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 14 lifetime starts against the Padres. The Rockies are 7-1 in Marquez's last 8 starts against San Diego. Nick Martinez is 0-0 with a 7.45 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 2 lifetime starts against Colorado. Martinez is 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 9 starts this year and already has 25 walks in 47 1/3 innings with control being an issue. Take Colorado.
This is a play on the SAN DIEGO PADRES for our Saturday Free Play. San Diego had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 10-4 loss on Friday but it still remains in first place in the National League West as the Dodgers also went down. The Padres have won 11 of 15 games and are off to the best start in franchise history with this being the first time they have been in first place in the division this late in the season since September 25, 2010. The San Diego pitching has been solid as it is ranked No. 4 in runs allowed per nine innings and batting average allowed and Nick Martinez has been on a solid run with a 3.24 ERA over his last three starts. San Diego is 10-2 against the money line in National League road games against teams allowing 4.5 or more rpg this season. Colorado snapped a three-game slide with the victory and the offense came alive as it has not sniffed double-digits in runs scored in a long time. The Rockies are nine games under .500 overall and two games under .500 at home and they send German Marquez to the hill and he has had a rough season with a 6.09 ERA and 1.52 WHIP and those numbers get worse at Coors Field. He is coming off a pair of quality starts on the road but expect him to get lit up on Saturday. Colorado is 7-22 against the money line against starting pitchers who gives up 5.5 or less hits per start this season. Here, we play on National League road teams hitting .255 or worse and with a bullpen whose WHIP is 1.15 or better on the season going up against a team with a bullpen whose ERA is 4.50 or worse. This situation is 94-47 (66.7 percent) over the last five seasons. Play (961) San Diego Padres
