**Most Likely: Nabokov #6 (Race 8)**
**Best Value: Happy Hill Lil #1 (Race 7)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: Nabokov #6, 2/1):

Mr. Peter Brant once again took out his checkbook, signing a major free agent at the Keeneland September Sale in 2020. The price tag for this colt by Uncle Mo? Yes, it was $775k … Coming into his 1st stakes attempt, one has to think that trainer Chad Brown will have his young charge ready to go. This is a golden opportunity to not only pursue a major purse, but to see what kind of ability the “on-the-engine” runner has at his disposal. It will not be an easy time of it, but with Flavien Prat in the irons, expect this one to be a winner. I think that 2/1 might be a reasonable price against a field like this one.

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Happy Hill Lil #1, 8/1):

The value search through the bargain bin was successful … I landed on this runner that has some major budding talent. Trainer Gary Sciacca has a moderately-sized barn, and he is sending this mare by Handsome Mike back to the Belmont green in hopes of a score. Breaking from that inside post can be tricky on the Widener, but luckily, veteran rider John Velazquez will be aboard. He should have things in-hand, and his mount is incredibly fit. With 6 starts under his belt, that qualifies him as a Belmont stalwart. He should be a superb price too!

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

      Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 4: Dirt, 7F, John A. Nerud S. (G2), $250k, 4+):

We should give Bill Mott a few plaudits for rolling back Speaker’s Corner #5 to run in this year’s Nerud. Of course, in the Met Mile H. (G1) he was well-beaten by John Sadler’s Flightline. This time around new jockey Jose Ortiz is going to try and get his mount home. The problem is that the son of Street Sense is going to face Todd Pletcher’s Life Is Good #1. We all know that the 4-yr-old by Into Mischief is full of class and early speed. Even though this one failed to hit-the-board in the Dubai World Cup (G1), he still has the ability to return to the Breeders’ Cup later this year. Will it be in the Dirt Mile (G1) or the Classic (G1)? Wait and see … In the meantime, Flavien Prat takes over the riding duties from Irad Ortiz … a worthy substitute. We could be looking at a major speed duel between these two “early-goers,” and that could give a “closer” the chance to make up ground … eh? Well, I am not too sure that will happen. The other 3 that are showing their faces just do not have the class. Another match race is in-store at Belmont in the sprint division … Pletcher’s LIG gets it done.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, Life Is Good #1

Churchill Downs Picks: All-Stakes P5 includes Stephen Foster S. on July 2
        By J.N. Campbell

Churchill Downs Picks - Saturday, July 2, 2022

        Race 1: 2-5-9-6
        Race 2: 1-4-8-6
        Race 3: 10-11-2-5
        Race 4: 12-4-1-3
        Race 5: 9-11-8-2
        Race 6: 1-2-4-3
        Race 7: 8-9-5-7
        Race 8: 5-1-4-2
        Race 9: 4-5-6-3
        Race 10: 1-3-2-6
        Race 11: 6-4-11-8
        Race 12: 7-1-10-5
**Most Likely: Shedaresthedevil #5 (Race 8)**
**Best Value: Kuchar #8 (Race 7)**

        ALL-STAKES PICK 5 …

        LEG 1: (Race 6: Dirt, 1 Mile, Tepin S. $200k, 3F)

Named for one of Mark Casse’s greatest runners on the grass, this race will be forced to the dirt. The Matt Winn Turf Course simply isn’t ready. In the meantime, we start this sequence with 7 entries that all look promising. I know that Steve Asmussen’s Wicked Halo #4 looks to be the standout, especially after winning from just off-the-pace in a BT @CD on 12 June. Tyler Gaffalione gets the call once again. If the daughter of Gun Runner can harness some of that power she has, then you could be looking at an easy winner. I don’t think that is the case … Instead, I much prefer Joe Sharp’s Heartyconstitution #1. Ridden by Luis Saez, I think this one is up to the class jump. The move to this jockey from Martin Garcia is a welcome one. By Constitution, she was locked up in that OC80kn1x on 3 June, and if given the proper pace scenario, I think she could win this race. One other one to consider is Brad Cox’s Juddmonte homebred, Patna #2. A well-bred filly by Into Mischief, she has what it takes to rival a group like this one. We know that when Cox and Florent Geroux get together, they can be virtually unbeatable. Including this hiker is a must, I think. Going with both inside runners is the plan … moving right along …

        Selections: 1/2 (2-Deep)

        LEG 2: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 1/16th, American Derby S. $200k, 3)

Here is a wide-open race that could really go to anybody. Sure, you could back trainer Kenny McPeek’s Rattle N Roll #9, but I am not sure that I totally trust this one. He has some solid 3-yr-old class lines, but it should be said … he hasn’t won a race this year. I am willing to leave him out, and look for value elsewhere. When it comes to a top pick, I am pretty keen to “Single” Rudy Brisset’s Kuchar #8. A WinStar homebred by Uncle Mo, do not discount his running ability just because of his lack of stakes races. The Oaklawn S. $150k against Home Brew was pretty solid. I like his rating ability, and if Florent Geroux can get his mount out of the gate in good order, set up just off the speed, then it will result in a score. Maybe my best bet of the entire day … Yep, it is a “Single” …

        Selections: 8 (Single)

        LEG 3: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 1/8th, Fleur de Lis S. (G2), $350k, F&M 4+)

This year’s edition of the “Fleur” includes 4 alums from the 6 May running of the La Troienne S. (G1) at Churchill Downs. She’s All Wolfe #2, Ava’s Grace #3 (3rd), Pauline’s Pearl #4 (the winner), and Shedaresthedevil #5 (2nd) will try best each other again. I am thinking that Brad Cox’s “Shedares” will make a resounding comeback in this spot. She is a need-the-lead horse, but I know that Florent Geroux is just the person for the job. I would not count out Norm Casse’s Super Quick #1 either. Even though this filly by Super Saver has taken a much different road, I think she showed her ability to get loose on the lead is there. Joe Talamo gets the call, since Geroux is with Cox, so it will be very intriguing to see how the 1st furlong shakes out. Speed duel? Possibly … Either way, I am on the speed …

        Selections: 1/5 (2-Deep)

        LEG 4: (Race 9: Dirt, 6
