Race 5: Dirt, 1 1/8th, Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), $500k, 3F

Recent history tells us that heavy favorites in the CCA are vulnerable. Last year, Rob Atras’ Maracuja defeated Todd Pletcher’s Malathaat in what amounted to a major upset. This year we have a pair of co-favorites that will be doing battle for the 2nd time … D.W. Lukas’ Secret Oath #5 and Pletcher’s Nest #3 are deserving when it comes to the top spot on the tote. The are 3 other fillies drawn-in for this important stop for 3-yr-olds, but none of them have the ability of this pair of rivals. After what was a fabulous spring for both of them, they did battle down the stretch in the Kentucky Oaks (G1). Despite the wet conditions, Secret Oath #5, ridden expertly by Luis Saez, made a key move on the final turn to set-up the victory. A daughter of the now-deceased Arrogate, she has single-handedly revived “The Coach’s” career. If she has the opportunity to exhibit that big kick of hers, then she could be virtually unstoppable. I was impressed with her at Oaklawn, but Pletcher’s daughter of Curlin is my top selection. Even though she was defeated in the head-to-head battle under the Twin Spires, her “staying” ability was on full-display as she took on “the boys” in the Belmont Stakes (G1). Despite a tough start, she was incredibly game finishing behind Mo Donegal, and based on her form, the connections of Repole Stable and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, she comes to The SPA ready to fire. Irad Ortiz gets back aboard, and he will have the chance to strike back in this rematch race. Here is the wager …

Race 8: Dirt, 6F, ALLW115kn1x, 3+

It’s time to go sprinting on the Main Track at Saratoga, and even though there is a strong favorite in Chad Brown’s Klaravich-owned Highly Respected #7, that doesn’t mean the colt by Dialed In is a “sure bet.” He certainly is talented, and coming from a scorching barn like this one adds to the argument. However, in races at the ALLW Co. level like these, you cannot underestimate the power of the long shot. Brown and Irad Ortiz are always overbet, so naturally seeking value elsewhere makes sense. Taking on a runner that in 3 starts has never finished below “Place” is impressive to be sure. Still, the contrarian ‘capper in me much prefers the budding talent of Todd Pletcher’s Under Oath #6 and Al Stall’s Peaceful Waters #2. Both of these sprinters have different talents that make them inviting. The former is moving up in class from running against maidens, and the WinStar homebred was excellent at Keeneland in April. His Speightstown roots speak to superb breeding, and with Johnny V in the irons, he has a chance to take a step forward against this group. I am intrigued by Stall’s entry, simply because the Kentucky shippers have made some noise over the course of the last week. Allied Racing invested a pretty penny in this son of Dialed In, and his early speed could be a major asset, if Luis Saez can hustle him out of the gate in good order. Running against tough OC80k Co. at Churchill prepared him well for this ship. Let’s use both of these colts, plus Brown’s ace … what a speed ball duel this is going to be …

Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/8th, OC62.5kn2x, 3+

The 2-turn distance test at 9-furlongs is rolled out in this race … and it is going to be a barnburner. Older males have filled the entry box, and out of these 7 the one to look out for down the lane will be Chad Brown’s Stage Raider #7. Owned by Mr. John Gunther, this homebred is a colt that always puts on a great show. He has a strong class rating, and his excellent conditioner has tried him at Gulfstream, Keeneland, and Belmont. With a record of 6/2-3-0, it is hard to argue against his current level of fitness. Brown’s numbers are stout in spots like these, so finding an alternative will be very difficult. My sense is that I want to find a runner that can control the pace up front, and outlast them all going wire-to-wire. Michelle Nevin, a trainer who is looking for her 1st win of the Meet, has Uncle Moonlight #1 breaking from the rail post. Stepping up from ALLW Co., the Uncle Mo gelding is not too shabby an alternative. Ridden by Kendrick Carmouche once again, he knows what he has to do … get to the lead. If he can lockdown the times on the engine, then he has a chance to go the distance. There is nothing to say that this one cannot stretch out, and you know he is going to be a decent price. Money is going to flow towards the #7, and that will give Nevin’s entry the price edge. The bet is …

MONMOUTH’S JERSEY SHORE PICK 6 … Race 8-13 …

LEG 1: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 1/8th, Monmouth Cup S. (G3), $400k, 3+)

The Jersey Shore P6 is off and running on Saturday, and it begins in the blocks with a Grade 3 contest. Let’s face facts … this is Chad Brown’s race to win, no matter how you slice it. Either Pipeline #6 or Highly Motivated #7 would be worthy winners for different reasons. The former, owned in-part by JD Gunther, came out of the Cigar Mile (G1) last December, and in his next start at Aqueduct in April the son of Speightstown just blistered the 6-horse field. If Manny Franco can claim the lead, then this race could be his. As for Brown’s “other” runner, bettors will remember the colt by Into Mischief well from the ’21 Derby Trail. His duel with Essential Quality was pleasing to watch, and after a major break after the KYD147, he has a couple of OC62.5kn2x runs (Keeneland and Belmont). That last attempt was a victory by just a neck when Flavien Prat edged out Stage Raider. The Klaravich-owned power runner probably has his best races ahead of him, and with that big late kick, he just needs a healthy dose of pace to run into. There is no getting around this Brown pair. Use them … moving right along …

LEG 2: (Race 9: Turf, 1 1/8th, Matchmaker S. (G3), $200k, F&M 3+)

Taking to the turf at Monmouth, it is going to be an all-out battle in this deeper route. Out of these 8 runners, once again, Chad Brown is well-represented. He has quite a trio in Peter Brant’s duo Lemista #2 and Flighty Lady #5, plus Head of Plains’ Fluffy Socks #6. Any one of these turfers can win, but I am going to spurn them all. That’s a dangerous tactic considering the company, but I am much more impressed by the potential behind Vicky Oliver’s Core Values #8. A strong filly by Honor Code, she was one of those “runbackers” that plied her trade 2x during the April Meet. Even though she was “outkicked” in the Grade 1 New York S., it was valuable experience that can be of use today. Florent Geroux hops on a flight from Del Mar, and has the ability to get the job done. One other grass specialist that I want to use is Brendan Walsh’s Lady Rockstar #4. Bred by the great Frankel (GB), she has ratcheted up in class impressively, and won both of her U.S. races. An import from the UK, Walsh clearly has her headed in the proper direction. She gets the services of Jose Ortiz, and that makes her a formidable foe. My 2 picks look inviting on the tote, and will give this ticket a big boost … especially with so much cash headed towards Team Brown.

LEG 3: (Race 10: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Molly Pitcher S. (G3), $400k, F&M 3+)

Named after that heroine of the American Revolution, the race begins and ends with Chad Brown’s Search Results #3. The 4-yr-old filly by Flatter has established a level of consistency that is something to admire. Loaded with class, Brown has put her up against the very best in races as a 3-yr-old … like the KYOaks (G1), the Acorn S. (G1), and the Test S. (G1). In ’22, she obviously needed a race after her poor showing in the Distaff H. (G3) at Aqueduct, before coming back for a score in the Ruffian S. (G2). The Ogden Phipps (G1) was not her day (vs. the fab Clairiere and Malathaat), but she easily has the chance to make amends here. This is a clear “Single,” if there is one on this Saturday card.

LEG 4: (Race 11: Turf, 1 3/8ths, United Nations S. (G1), $600k, 3+)

Heading to the back half of the P6 sequence, we have a good draw for this year’s edition of the U.N. Any discussion about this field begins with Christophe Clement’s celebrated star, Gufo #10. When it comes to leaders in the deep route turf division, this horse by Declaration of War is one of the top tier competitors. With over $1.5 million in earnings, he keeps racking up wins. Even though he has never shipped to Monmouth, he and regular jockey Joel Rosario will be near the lead as the wire approaches. Using him is essential. One other entry that does have the ability to take him on is Chad Brown’s Adhamo #1. Owned in-part by Madaket and Michael Dubb, the colt by Intello (GER) just did not have enough turn-of-foot to catch his stablemate, Tribhuvan (FR) #4, in the Manhattan S. (G1) at Belmont. One has to think that he is “due” for a major U.S. victory, and this could be it. Ridden expertly by Flavien Prat, he has what it takes to choose his spots, and creatively navigate traffic troubles. What we know … this is going to be a heck of a race!

LEG 5: (Race 12: Dirt, 1 1/8th, Haskell Invitational S. (G1), $1 million, 3)

The signature race of the weekend is the Grade 1 Haskell. When you get your invitation in the mail, then you know you are headed into some primetime. I am pretty convinced that Chad Brown’s Jack Christopher #7 is a “deserving favorite” from this titanic barn. It is well-documented that this runner’s health made him a major scratch just before the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Had he physically been able to compete along the Derby Trail, it is safe to say that he could have made significant noise. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, the only real question is … the stretch out to 9-furlongs. I am not too worried about this question because in the end, the best horse will win. One other runner that I quite like, and was behind in the Kentucky Derby (G1) is Brad Cox’s Cyberknife #1. The well-bred colt by Gun Runner is coming off a win in the Matt Winn S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. The 3-yr-old scored by just a whisker, but the purpose was to get her proper “prep” before this major race. The hot pace in the Derby was really a death knell for the young phenom, and the result was a total surprise. Getting back to a running style like he exhibited in the Arkansas Derby (G1) would be optimal. His mental development continues, and with Florent Geroux aboard once again, he has a chance to make a splash at a price. We all know that Bob Baffert’s Taiba #2 is going to take significant money … I am staying away from this overrated entry … roll the dice!

LEG 6: (Race 13: Turf, 1 1/16th, MC16k, F&M 3+)

After all the “graded” action, we will finish up with an open company MC affair on the grass. Going around 2-turns, I am looking for a top pick that can handle both the sod and the condition. When it comes down to it, I think Peter Walder’s import from Gulfstream Park looks best. Openthegate #10 was up against tough company in South Florida, and even though the filly by Arrogate did not notch a victory, she gained valuable experience. Walder had his share of winners during the Championship Meet, and that competition was at a high level. Getting Paco Lopez to ride in this spot is a great move, despite his controversial tactics. Let’s use this talented 3-yr-old who comes to Monmouth for the first time, but also include a few others … David Duggan’s Requestforproposal #6 and Claudio Gonzalez’s War in Paradise #2. Both of these turf routers have nice class lines, and their pedigrees make them “key” plays. What a race to end what amounts to a challenging .20 P6 ticket … time to get to the window and place our bet!

Race 5 – Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks

1. #3 Nest (1-1) – Ran an admirable second in the Belmont, and could be one that fares better at ten furlongs as opposed to eight, but not many options here outside of the clear top two

2. #5 Secret Oath (6-5) – The positive for this one is that she has been working great and beat Nest in the Kentucky Oaks, but should probably be a bit closer to the pack than she was in the Preakness to be able to beat Nest here

3. #2 Society (8-1) – This filly by Gun Runner hasn’t lost in three tries, but isn’t posting great figures or closing very fast, still might have the lead to herself here

4. #1 Butterbean (8-1) – Has been more consistent than Nostalgic, hitting the board in seven of eight by making huge strides recently but might need some pace and continued improvement

Race 8 – Alw 115000n1x

1. #7 Highly Respected (9-5) – There are certainly others who are capable, but still seems like taking this likely favorite at six furlongs is the best play to win

2. #6 Under Oath (4-1) – Won last time from six lengths back, but may need the right set up from Prisoner and Peaceful Waters to have a similar style trip here

3. #4 Favorite Outlaw (5-2) – Tried to go directly to the lead last time which didn’t work, so a stalking trip here should give this Asmussen trainee the best chance here

4. #3 Prisoner (8-1) – Hasn’t finished races particularly fast, but his gate to wire wins were easy and the recent works are incredibly sharp, he needs to break first to bounce back off a bad effort

Race 9 – OC 62500n2x

1. #1 Uncle Moonlight (9-2) – Flashed some real speed last time and should here as well with Carmouche in the irons but will need to hang on with the added furlong

2. #7 Stage Raider (1-1) – His last race showed enough to beat most of these, but has finished second more than he has won and needs to break well to win

3. #3 Rising Empire (10-1) – Should be the ideal distance for this colt by Empire Maker, and adding blinkers may keep him a bit more forward where he has won

4. #2 The Reds (6-1) – Hasn’t been great recently, but a bit easier of an ask than Creed who comes off a long layoff, and has a good chance to hit the board here

Race 10 – Grade III Caress Stakes

1. #4 Bout Time (3-1) – Brutally tough race that could see a handful of winners, this one has the right running style and has found her stride at this distance on the turf

2. #1 Caravel (5-2) – Has won her last five against fillies and mares, often times stepping up to face the boys, but might need to lay off Robin Sparkles here to win

3. #5 Tobys Heart (8-1) – Not always the most consistent, but something to be said about being four for four at this distance and should get speed to aim at

4. #3 Star Devine (9-2) – Souper Sensational is playable here as well, but this one has a bit more experience on the turf and is a solid play to round out exotics

Monmouth Dirt Stakes Spot Plays for July 23

Three stakes races on the main surface help comprise the signature day of the summer meeting at Monmouth Park on Saturday. Conditioner Chad Brown has imposing horses in each of the contests and I think that he will sweep the dirt stakes races.
Race 8 – Monmouth Cup S. (G3)

Brown has a formidable duo in the 1 1/8-mile contest. I will give a slight edge to #6 Pipeline (3-2) as I like his chances of enduring the distance a bit more than his stablemate. By Speightstown, the four-year-old colt had a solid three-year-old season and commenced 2022 with a smashing allowance tally when going a one-turn mile at Aqueduct.

Pipeline posted a healthy 99 Brisnet Speed figure in his lone two-turn try to date, and I feel that he will appreciate the nine-furlong voyage on Saturday. Manny Franco retains the ride atop the talented colt.
Race 10 – Molly Pitcher S. (G3)

A classy field of seven fillies and mares will go postward in the 1 1/16-mile affair. Brown’s #3 Search Results (3-2) is the clear one to beat in my opinion, and I expect the talented four-year-old to deliver.

The 2021 Acorn S. (G1) heroine exits a fine third-place showing in the loaded Ogden Phipps S. (G1) last time out, and a repeat of that showing will make her super tough on this occasion. Flavien Prat will guide the Flatter filly.

#1 Leader of the Band (6-1) is two-for-three locally and comes off a gritty score in the Lady’s Secret S. when running down a clear one on the oval. The John Servis pupil is not overly consistent, but she runs well at Monmouth and gets the nod to complete the exacta in this spot.
Race 12 – Haskell S. (G1)

Although there are four Grade 1-winning sophomores in the field, I simply can’t go against #7 Jack Christopher (3-2) for Brown. The electric three-year-old has cruised home a clear winner in each of his four races to date, and while the Munnings colt has never run two turns, I don’t imagine that the distance will pose a problem to him. The chestnut will prompt the pace from the start under regular rider Jose Ortiz.

I also think that #6 White Abarrio (5-1) is a live contender in this endeavor for Saffie Joseph. The Florida Derby (G1) victor had a very good prep for Saturday when second against a solid cast in the Ohio Derby (G3) in advance of his local bow. The son of Race Day has good tactical speed and will get first run on the deep closers turning for home.

VERNELLA KID - Is a definite contender - given the 58 speed rating from her most recent race. Has a strong shot for this event if you like back class. MAYDAY PAYDAY - Horst has her trained solidly to break speedily out of the gate.

Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of quite good win percentage - 27 percent - at this distance & surface. SUMMONYOURCOURAGE - Pletcher has a reliable win percentage of 22 in two-year old races. The price might be just right on this horse. Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 80 Equibase Speed Fig which is one of the strongest in this group. UPGRADE - Pletcher and Velazquez have won 25 percent of their races giving this pony a very strong chance.

MY BROTHER MIKE - It looks like Perez had to learn all about this gelding on May 14th when riding him for the initial time. Back aboard again today. Faced tougher last time out at Gulfstream Park. Based on class figures, this is a weaker group, so I will put this one on my list of contenders. A repeat of that most recent performance on May 14th where he registered a speed figure of 74 looks strong enough to triumph in this race. TRAVEL GUIDE - I believe the addition of blinkers today will help this colt focus his attention on racing. BLUTO'S CANDY - Dropping in class rating points from his June 17th race at Gulfstream Park. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this horse the advantage. Another way to determine class is earnings per start. This mount has the highest in the field. I think he'll be close at the finish line.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 GAMBLING TZAR (ML=5/2), #8 TAKEMYSHOT (ML=4/1), #6 DUNKLE (ML=9/2),

GAMBLING TZAR - Not the right 'fit' in this race. TAKEMYSHOT - Gulfstream Park is not a comfortable abode to this questionable contender. I cannot play this repeated non-winner. Gets the job fulfilled once in a while. This gelding garnered a speed rating in his last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's race. DUNKLE - Don't think that this colt has value at 9/2 this time out.

1^st race – (8) With Bells On graduated in her third try for Pletcher and should prevail here. (3) Free Data should welcome a return to turf. (4) Regal Realm finds a spot where she should bounce back to top form. (5) Jean V’s Legacy had a wide trip last but could save some ground here.
2^nd race – (2) Easy as A.B.C is putting in bullet works over the track for Breen and is worth a long look here. (4) Driven by Pressure debuts for Pletcher and acts like the one to fear. (6) Royal Mover showed little in his debut but could move forward here. (5) Blame D Rule Maker could be a factor in his debut.
3^rd race - (5) The Critical Way was collared last time but has worked sharply and can resume his winning ways. (3) Proven Strategies shapes up as the main stretch threat. (7) Belgrano beat the top two last time but adds six pounds. (1) Montauk Daddy could be a contender while moving back to turf.
4^th race – (3) Firenze Freedom should benefit from her comeback start and prevail in this spot. (6) Big Bad Diva looks like the one to fear. (5) Suspended Campaign can make her presence felt here. (8) Dia de Sol looms a stretch threat in this field.
5^th race – (12) On the Couch is in great form with two straight wins and can make it three in a row despite the post. (2) Miracle Silver could be tough to catch from an inside post. (11) Unleveraged won at this level and cannot be ignored. (7) Bird’s Eye View should be closing at the end.
6th race – (8) Dust Devil will welcome a fast track and seems poised for a big effort. (4) Our Lucky Man has been knocking on the door and might pull out a win today. (2) Awesome Aaron figures to rebound here from a dismal try last time. (1) Affable Monarch fits in nicely with this bunch.
7th race – (1) Credit River lost all chance at the start last time. Can make amends here. (2) Agent Creed has a strong enough late kick to register a victory. (4) Basso could respond to a nice jockey switch. (10) Dominate Themoment could turn out to be the star in this field.
8th race - The Monmouth Cup, G3 - (7) Highly Motivated looked good winning last time out and gets the nod for recency. (6) Pipeline, a stablemate of the top pick, romped to victory last time, but has not raced since April. (2) Top Gun Tommy has som speed and could be around at the end. (3) Imformative could sneak into the picture at the end. Pick 6: 6-7 with 4-5-6-7 with 3 with 1-4-10 with 1-2-6-7 with 1-2-10-12.
9^th race – The WinStar Matchmaker, G3 - (6) Fluffy Socks didn’t fire while racing wide in a prep for this but seems on edge for a better try. (7) Vigilantes Way was second in her last three tries and can complete the exacta again. (4) Lady Rockstar is undefeated in two US starts, but tests stakes company here for the first time. (5) Flighty Lady looks like the one to catch here.
10^th race – The Molly Pitcher Stakes, G3 - (3) Search Results faced the top older fillies last time. Will benefit from some class relief here. (4) Army Wife is classy enough to pull rank in this field. (7) Bonny South has some late kick and usually appears in the exotics. (2) Pennybaker might bounce back to top form in her third US start.
11^th race – The United Nations, G1 - (1) Adhamo had some traffic problems last time when second to Tribhuvan and can turn the tables here. (4) Tribhuvan won this race on the front end last year and will be tough to catch here. (10) Gufo is the main threat to the Chad Brown-trained top two picks but didn’t land a good post. (3) Temple looks like a top contender at this distance.
12^th race – The Haskell Stakes, G1 - (7) Jack Christopher could cap a huge day for trainer Chad Brown. He’s the fastest horse in the field on speed figures and is undefeated. Maybe 1

COMMENTS: THE CRITICAL WAY is capable of some really fast early fractions and should be on top of his game in the third start after a layoff. BELGRANO would be the primary beneficiary of a hot early pace. He won five of eight at Monmouth and just four of 33 elsewhere. PROVEN STRATEGIES just missed in his last effort. He fell short by a neck to BELGRANO but could be better in the second start off the sidelines. BIG PACKAGE ran the highest last race speed figure and has a fast workout between races.

COMMENTS: ROUGH SEA won his last race by 10 lengths with significantly better fractions. It was his first go around Monmouth and it is our experience that a big effort is usually followed by another. HIGHLY MOTIVATED has the most class and is not all that far from winning five of his eight races. PIPELINE is making his first start after a short rest. He runs well fresh but has fallen short at the very end two of his last three returns after a layoff. TOP GUN TOMMY should be part of the early pace and finished in the trifecta in nine of his last 10 starts.

COMMENTS: VIGILANTES WAY is a horse for the course with two wins and three second in five starts. She is not much more than a length from winning four of the five. FLUFFY SOCKS has powerful late race moves and will try to clip them at the wire. LEMISTA should be in peak form in her third start off the bench and will also fly at the end. LADY ROCKSTAR is undefeated in two since coming from England but this will be the toughest group she has faced.

The combo of first Lasix and speed works but she does not have to be much better coming off the highest last race speed figure. BETHS DREAM is a head away from winning four in a row. She has a bullet work between races and should be sharp in race two after a short break. ARMY WIFE has hit the board in nine of nine races on fast track. BONNY SOUTH is the lone true closer in the field but the pace might not be hot enough to maximize her late race edge.

COMMENTS: GUFO finished second twice in two races at this longer distance. He is just a length and a head bob from scoring in both. TRIBHUVAN is coming off a big Grade I win at Belmont Park and is the defending Champion of the United Nations Stakes. CARPENTERS CALL has won three of five turf races and can go wire to wire with the right fractions. KENTUCKY GHOST improved his in race numbers from the start to the finish of his last outing. A couple of strong workouts since the winning effort suggest he will be sharp again.

COMMENTS: Take your pick between JACK CHRISTOPHER and TAIBA as there is not much if anything that separates the two. The biggest fear is they duel from gate to wire and run unreasonable fractions. BENEVENGO is a price horse that could sit right behind the two favorites and has won from off the pace. He is three for three on a fast track and has a bunch of bullet works at Monmouth getting ready. CYBERKNIFE has proven he can handle the distance with a win in the Arkansas Derby.
