Saratoga Late Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, August 5, 2022
                by Frank Carulli

The road to unlocking Friday’s Late Pick 4 at Saratoga went through jockey Joel Rosario in July. The track’s second-leading rider rode winners on all three Fridays the 50-cent wager was offered. Two of Rosario’s winners went off at 12-1 and 7-1, respectively, producing Pick 4 payouts of $981 and $720. He has mounts in a pair of graded stakes on the turf that are part of this week’s sequence.

SAR 7th race (4:29 EST) -- LIL COMMISSIONER cruised up 4-wide on the turn to take a commanding lead, then dug in while tiring and drifting in the final sixteenth to win on the class drop at 7F. He spoiled a repeat bid by class-rising Zavion (9-38, $235k), who ran into traffic on the turn. DIRECT ORDER rallied for two wins and a second in his last three starts at this level and gets ample pace flow to strike again for his fourth new barn this year. DARK STORM, plagued by slow starts throughout his career, drops in for his cheapest claiming tag to date and could capitalize on an ideal setup to spring a mild upset.

SAR 8th race (5:05 EST) -- STOLEN BASE seeks his second Grade II turf stakes victory in the $200,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes. He advanced steadily after he clipped heels on the first turn to beat a quality field in the $500,000 American Turf at Churchill Downs two starts back. He out-kicked Balnikhov, who came back to win the restricted Oceanside Stakes at Delmar, he handed G-III winner Sy Dog his first loss in four starts and he finished 7-3/4 lengths ahead of Main Event, who followed with a wire-to-wire victory in the Grade III Kent Stakes at Delaware Park. Stolen Base back-pedaled in the G-I Belmont Derby a month ago, but delivered an encouraging 4F workout on the Saratoga lawn Sunday. WIT is sure to draw a lot of attention with a 5/2-1-1 graded stakes record, with two of the setbacks coming against multiple G-I winner Jack Christopher. But he makes his turf debut and the foals of his unraced dam, Numero d’Oro, are 20-for-71 overall but 0-for-6 in turf routes. DOUBLE CLUTCH made a 5-wide, last-to-second move in the final eighth in his first stakes try. He got up to finish second behind sharp, odds-on winner Annapolis.

SAR 9th race (5:39 EST) -- GOLDEN PAL returns to the states after a nightmarish trip to Royal Ascot when his five-race, graded stakes winning streak ended with an unprepared start. He breezed a pair of 5F bullets at Saratoga recently and tries to reaffirm trainer Wesley’s Ward belief that he is the ‘fastest horse on the planet.’ If he doesn’t rebound, ARZAC, with Rosario summoned to ride, could be the one to spoil the homecoming. He lost ground throughout in the G-II Highlander at Woodbine but still managed to sweep 5-wide to a commanding lead at the 1/8-pole before tiring late to finish second. He should sit a dream trip off a rapid pace on the cutback from 6F to 5-1/2F.

SAR 10th race (6:13 EST) – Taking nothing to chance in this maiden claimer for New York breds. With four well-beaten class droppers, two first-time starters and the 2-3 finishers from a recent 6F sprint at this level, hit the ‘ALL’ button.

                Suggested 50-cent Ticket

                SAR 7th Race: 2, 3, 4

                SAR 8th Race: 5, 7

                SAR 9th Race: 3, 5

                SAR 10th Race: ALL

                COST: $54

Spa selections 2022: Saratoga picks August 5
In Spa Selections, our correspondent provides his Saratoga picks for key races on today’s Saratoga card!

Race 8 – Grade II National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes

                  1. #7 Double Clutch (5-1) – This colt made a nice closing move last time out in the Manila, and appears to be trending up in just his fourth start

                  2. #6 Ready to Purrform (9-2) – Has run in four straight stakes races, and is routinely a short price, should be closing late with Rosario

                  3. #8 Celestial City (6-1) – Castellano may need to have this colt by Uncle Mo a bit more forward than usual here, but has run back to back solid races in the money

                  4. #3 Wit (4-1) – First time turfer for Todd Pletcher who won the Grade III Sanford here last year, the surface chance is interesting for this one who still has plenty of talent

Race 9 – Grade III Troy Stakes

                  1. #5 Golden Pal (1-2) – Clear winner if he runs his race, but may be pressed by Carotari if both horses break well which makes this more difficult

                  2. #4 Carotari (6-1) – The only one who is likely to be near Golden Pal early, and nearly won this race last year plus has put forth two good efforts at Saratoga before

                  3. #7 Thin White Duke (30-1) – Three races at the Spa and three seconds, this four year old gelding has been unlucky in the past, but runs best going shorter and needs to break well here

                  4. #3 Arzak (9-2) – Has run from up on the pace and as a closer, which gives Rosario some options as a few here are likely trying to go all out from the jump and hang on late

                  Race 10 – MC 25000

                  1. #7 Skyward Princess (7-2) – Adds blinkers, and despite not improving much with the class drop last time, this one can be a factor if more involved with the early lead

                  2. #6 Wicked Lady (5-2) – Hoping for some improvement with the class drop into claiming company, although her first two races may be good enough to win here

                  3. #4 Big Bean Christine (7-2) – Actually has had some of the best speed figures recently and is the most experienced, with a pretty good chance to hit the board here among this company

                  4. #3 Regal Rebel (6-1) – Hasn’t been close in four tries, but another one that drops to maiden claiming for the first time and has had good breaks from the gate in the past

Most Likely Winner: Golden Pal #5 (Race 9)

                      Late Pick 4 … Races 7-10

                      Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile, Clm16k, 3+

The Late Pick 4 begins on the Main Track at The Spa, and even though it is a “claiming” contest, that doesn’t mean it is an easy beginning. I do have a pair of runners that I like very much, and either of them could score. My top pick is Jeffrey Englehart’s Ragtime Blues #5. A horse by Union Rags, he has some game efforts at Aqueduct, Laurel, and in May at Pimlico. In 21 career starts, he has proved that he can handle a crowd like this one, and I like the addition of Luis Saez. If his mount can break well, then the team has a chance to visit the winner’s circle. One other entry that caught my eye was a claim made by trainer Gustavo Rodriguez. Direct Order #4 always seems to get dealt in the NYRA Racing Office, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t capable. His new barn has made a shrewd decision, and is sticking with regular rider Manny Franco. I think that is very important once a mount gets transferred, and it can make a major difference. The son of New Year’s Day might have 40 starts under him, but he is not done yet. Neither are we … time to move on to the next race!

                      Leg 1: 4/5 (2-Deep)

                      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager, WPS # ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Race 8: Turf, 1 Mile, National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. (G2), $200k, 3

One of the many turf highlights of the Saratoga Summer is this race—the HOF Stakes. A G2, it regularly brings together a nice field. I am not sure if moisture will play a factor in the running of this race, so be sure to check the track conditions before heading to the windows. The Inner Turf will be the spot, and I believe that Tiz the Bomb #9 has my vote when it comes to the top spot. Kenny McPeek’s colt by Hit It a Bomb appears full of class, and not just because he ran in KYD148. His last race, the Belmont Derby (G1), was just terrible, as he got the worst trip possible. It is time for some redemption … Owned by the conditioner’s Magdalena Racing, he really enjoys the grass, much more so than the dirt. I remember walking by him at the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, and his long and lean body speaks “turf.” Julien Leparoux is as tough as they come, and he really understands how to get the best out of his mount, especially on the lawn. You might recall that he was Tepin’s jockey … fitting that she will be inducted into the HOF at Saratoga this week … This race is a clear “Single,” and McPeek’s charge gets it done. Sit back and watch that devasting leg kick this colt has … it is something to behold.

                      Leg 2: 9 (Single)

                      Wagering Recommendation: $25/$50 WP #9

                      Race 9: Turf, 5

I would peg #3 Tapizearance as the horse to beat in this race, though he and all of the other short prices in this field are hardly trustworthy options. Tapizearance obviously didn’t run well first off the claim for Gustavo Rodriguez last time, but he was also stepping up into a much tougher spot and never looked comfortable chasing wide. He’s now dropping down to a more appropriate class level and will be tough if he can recapture the consistent form that he displayed for Linda Rice. I prefer him to #5 Magnetron, who could take some money off a couple of competitive speed figures at Finger Lakes. Some may be attracted to him because he’s exiting a victory, but he’s really more of a cheaper claimer. My top pick is #2 Jemography. Like the morning-line favorite, he didn’t run well first off the claim for a new barn last time. However, he never was going to be competitive in the Saginaw Stakes. I think some may mistakenly assume he’s just fallen apart for new trainer Ed DeLauro, but I wonder if he ran there just to make the race fill. It never looked like Eric Cancel really asked him for his best, as he was just eased to the wire once beaten. His prior form is solid and I think he’s a strong fit here if able to bounce back.

RACE 5: MY SWEET STORY (#8)

My primary opinion in this allowance marathon is that I want to play against #1 Shad Nation, who could go favored by default, going out for Christophe Clement with Irad Ortiz Jr. riding. Her recent form is not particularly compelling, and I don’t see any evidence that she’s crying out for more ground. I actually much prefer her stablemate #1A Santa Giulia on the stretch-out. Yet she needs one scratch to get into the main body of the field, and I can’t be too positive on her, since Shad Nation will drive down her price if both run. I’m most interested in two alternatives. My top pick is #8 My Sweet Story. This grey filly has slowly but surely been coming along. She achieved her maiden victory with a late rush from last-to-first at Colonial last summer, but still seemed like a work in progress. She returned from a lengthy layoff recently with a pair of improved efforts to kick off her 4-year-old campaign. Flown, the winner of her last, is a talented multiple stakes-placed performer. This stretch-out in distance shouldn’t be an issue for her, since she’s a full-sister to My Afleet, who won going this distance and was second in the 1 5/8-mile John's Call over this course. The other runner I want to use is #7 Good Measure. She’s only made one turf start during her career, coming last fall at Laurel. She actually ran better than the result might indicate that day, as she was never in a comfortable spot to rally, altering course in traffic while attempting to make up ground. Since then she’s shown some improvement on dirt, and has responded well to elongated distances in her last couple of starts. Clearly the stamina is there, and fondness for turf shouldn’t be an issue, as she's a half-sister to two grass winners.

                        RACE 8: DOUBLE CLUTCH (#7)

There are a couple of short-priced runners who I think are vulnerable in the Hall of Fame. #3 Wit figures to attract some attention as he tries turf for the first time. He really doesn’t have much pedigree for this surface, but he did appear to work well over the grass in two recent drills on the Oklahoma turf course. I won’t be shocked if he runs well, but I wouldn’t want to take any kind of short price on him. #9 Tiz the Bomb is another who could take money based on reputation. He did get a poor trip in the Belmont Derby last time, going very wide on the turns and steadying on the backstretch. However, I’m just not thrilled with his prior turf form and think he’s a little overrated. There’s not that much speed in this field, so #2 Dowagiac Chief interests me a bit. I know it looks like he’s off form right now, but he got the wrong trip in the American Turf two back. And last time he was a little awkward away from the gate and unable to attain his usual position up front. He figures to get the lead with blinkers being added this time, and speed is dangerous going a mile on the inner. My top pick is #7 Double Clutch, who just seems like an inexperienced horse who still has upside. He ran well in his first two starts against maidens and made a huge jump to finish second in the Manila last time. He was still pretty far back at the top of the stretch that day, but finished well down the center of the course. I think he has more tactical speed than shown last time and should work out a good stalking trip here. I also want to use #8 Celestial City, who closed well through traffic last time and is another who seems to be moving forward with every start.
