What You Need to Know - Saratoga | Sunday, August 7, 2022

                    by Jeff Siegel

                    SARATOGA SPOTLIGHT RACES:

Fifth Race – Post: 3:21 ET

                    Top Pick: 8-Peace Cruiser (7/2)
This promising first-time starter has displayed enough ability at the sales at Timonium and locally since arriving at Saratoga to expect a big effort in this contentious seven furlong sprint with several promising newcomers in the field. The daughter of Violence was best of a team in a good gate work last month (see below) and, assuming she breaks well, projects to be forwardly placed if not on or near the lead. Listed at 7/2 on the morning line, she’s a strong play at or near that price both in the straight pool and in the various rolling exotics. For protection, you may consider tossing in 4-Raging Sea and Renegade Rebel somewhere on your ticket. The former doesn’t train like a speed type and in fact might be a race away from showing her best stuff, but there’s no doubt she has talent, and at this extended sprint distance she could be heard from late. The latter brought $700,00 at the OBS April sale after impressing with a :10 flat breeze but is a long-striding type that should like this seven furlong trip.

                    Eighth Race: Post: 5:05 ET
                    Top Pick: 8-Portilla (9/2)

Lightly raced and improving with experience, this daughter of Dialed In appears ready to step forward again in this extended sprint for first-level allowance fillies and mares. Second in a similar affair last time out with a career top sped figure in a strong race that already has produced a next-out winner, the Albert Stall, Jr.-trained filly is comfortably drawn outside and should enjoy an ideal stalking trip. A recent sharp breeze over the track is another big plus. At 9/2 on the morning line, we’ll make her a strong straight play and a rolling exotic single.

                    *

                    SARATOA RECOMMENDED ROLLING EXOTIC STRATEGIES:

                    (Races 1-5)
                    1st race: 8-Talkin Pharoah; 4-Scarpia
                    2nd race: 3-Blue Jays; 5-Majestic Tiger
                    3rd race: 2-Goodnight Olive
                    4th race: 2-Naughty Gal ; 3-Promise of Hope
                    5th race: 8-Peace Cruiser; 4-Raging Sea; 9-Renegade Rebel

                    (Races 6-10)
                    6th race: 4-Pink Hue 9-Delight
                    7th race: 4-Walkathon; 2-McKulick; 3-With The Moonlight
                    8th race: 8-Portilla
                    9th race: 1-Love And Thunder 5-Jouster; 6-Our Flash Drive
                    10th race: 1-Digital Software; 5-Maseta; 10-Merci

                    SARATOGA WORKOUT ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY:

                    FIRST RACE:

                    Scarpia (July 28, Saratoga, 3f, :36.4bg). Grade: B-
In blinkers, did well in training track gate drill inside (and best) over Monterey Peninsula (same time) for W. Ward, mostly on his own, (opening quarter :24 flat). Though pedigree suggests he might be better suited over a distance of ground, Union Rags colt has some run, moves well, and should be competitive first crack out of the box sprinting vs. juveniles. Bred to enjoy grass on the bottom side.

                    FOURTH RACE:

Naughty Gal (July 31, Saratoga, 4f, :49.4bg TT). Grade: B
Didn’t go fast in training track gate drill while much best over Western Ghent (4f, :50.2bg TT) but was under cruise control throughout, splits of :24.3 and :49.4, and looking fine for Lukas. Into Mischief filly crushed maidens in Kentucky last time out and has done quite well in the morning since.
                    View Workout Video

Promise of Hope (July 29, Saratoga, 4f, :48b). Grade: B
Nothing flashy but did fine in breezing half mile drill inside Malibu S S (same time) for T. Amoss, splits of :24 flat and :48 flat, never asked. Scored handsomely in debut at Churchill Downs in debut last month, will get tested in the Adirondack S.
                    View Workout Video

Sabra Tuff (July 30, Saratoga, 5f, 1:00.1h TT). Grade: B-
Easy to the top, then was ridden aggressively through the lane, final quarter mile in :24 flat for D. Stewart. Okay move, probably will do her best when the distances increase.

                    FIFTH RACE:

                    Raging Sea (July 24, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02.1b). Grade: B-
Under a tight hold throughout just galloping along, final quarter mile in :26 flat while even but slightly best outside Pink Hue (same time) for C. Brown. Curlin filly probably is a route-type but certainly could have gone considerably faster if allowed to run at any stage of this drill (workmate breezing, too). Like the way she conducts herself, could be a very nice type down the road.
                    View Workout Video

                    Peace Cruiser (July 22, Saratoga, 4f, :48.1hg). Grade: B-
Nice gate drill by daughter of Violence while even but clearly best with Milieu (same time) for W. Mott, easy early and then pulling away late without need of urging. Has done everything asked and should be live at first asking. Breezed a quarter mile in :21 4/5 at Timonium during the preview session of the Spring Sale and looked quite good doing it.

                    SIXTH RACE:

                    Gifted (July 28, Saratoga, 4f, :49.2b). Grade: B-
Slightly second best outside Spelterini (same time) for W. Mott, very late changing leads and urged some in the final stages to wind up slightly behind at the finish. Probably should see one first.
                    View Workout Video

                    Pink Hue (July 24, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02.1b). Grade: B
Hard held inside Raging Sea in five furlong main track breeze for C. Brown, able to go much faster early if permitted. Looks to have plenty of zip and hopefully will be allowed to show it when she debuts. Bred for turf, female family leans toward pure speed.
                    View Workout Video

                    Invest Wisely (July 31, Saratoga, 4f, :47.3bg). Grade: B-
Inside Avant (same time) in team gate drill for T. Pletcher, ridden along throughout while almost a length back when eased up after a half mile, okay drill at best. Not a particularly quick type, probably a wise move to debut this Justify filly on grass over a distance of ground.
                    View Workout Video

La Mazel (July 31, Saratoga, 4f, :51b TT TC DU). Grade: B-
Mostly in hand throughout though slightly second best with Coexist (same time) around dogs on turf for A. Dutrow, okay work. Definitely trains like a long distance turf type.

                    __________________________________________________ ____________________________

                    SEVENTH RACE:

McKulick (July 31, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02b TT TC). Grade: B
Breezed through the lane outside Haughty (same time), both under a nice hold throughout while inside the dogs, both with plenty left late. Acts like she’ll continue to improve with distance and maturity.
                    View Workout Video

With The Moonlight (July 31, Saratoga, 6f, 1:15b TT TC). Grade: B+
Broke off more than two lengths behind Nations Pride (6f, 1:15.1b TT TC) to the head of the lane, then went on by while being asked to quicken, nice for C. Appleby. Daughter of Frankel ran well in U. S. debut when second in the Belmont Park Oaks and seems to come on well since that race. Workmate came back to win the Saratoga Derby, franking this drill.

Contemporary Art (July 31, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02b TT). Grade: B
Inside the dogs, head-and-head at the finish with Oakhurst (same time), stalking that one outside and then responding without need of coaxing through the lane in solid drill for C. Brown. The longer the better for this well-regarded recent maiden winner. Workmate was under a tight hold throughout, looked quite sharp, maintains her edge.

                    Oakhurst (July 31, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02b TT). Grade: B

                    Portilla (July 31, Saratoga, 4f, :48.1b). Grade: B+
Breezing outside to prove clearly best over Reigning Spirit (5f, 1:02b, out an extra furlong) in smooth drill for A. Stall, Jr., final quarter in :25.1 with plenty in hand. Lightly raced daughter of Dialed In has further improvement in her and seems primed for a major effort.

What You Need to Know - Del Mar | Sunday, August 7, 2022

                        by Jeff Siegel

                        DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:

Fourth Race – Post: 3:37 PT
                        Top Pick: 5-Thorne House (5/2)

Ran a winning race in defeat when a sharp runner-up in his debut in June at Santa Anita, missing by a half-length while more than three clear of the rest in a fast, highly rated race. The son of Clubhouse Ride has worked extremely well since (see below) and seems certain to produce a significant forward move with a race under his belt. There’s plenty of value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics at or near his morning line of 5/2.

                        Tenth Race: Post: 4:37 PT
                        Top Pick: 10-Getthemoney (5-1)

This is a loaded maiden sprint for juvenile fillies containing several highly regarded first time starters that appear fit and ready for top connections. We’ve settled on this daughter of Midnight Lute, a $230,000 OBS April sale purchase who has been spectacular in her morning preps for trainer Brian Koriner. Drawn comfortably outside, she can pop and go or stalk and pounce depending upon the race flow, but no matter how the race shapes up she should be difficult to outrun. Also worth a look at a price (8-1) in the exotics is 5-Princess Bettina, a first-timer by Will Take Charge who hasn’t been asked for her best in morning works but moves like a very nice sort and could at least get a piece of it.

                        SECOND RACE:

So It Would Seem (July 14, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.2h TT). Grade: B
Light coaxing only in solo training track drill, final three furlongs in :12 flat and :36.2, nice move. Was claimed back by J. Sadler, an encouraging sign, returns protected, looks good, and maintains her form.

                        Crypto Man (July 21, 5f, 1:02.2h). Grade: B-
Tied in with Angel Nadeshiko (4f, :49.3h) and finished more than a length behind at the wire but was merely galloping in the final furlong, better move than the final time would indicate for S. Callaghan. Doesn’t have sprinter’s quickness, which is why he’s debuting over a distance of ground. Something to work with here.

                        FOURTH RACE:

Thorne House (July 15, Santa Anita, 4f, :47hg). Grade: A-
Breezing from gate outside Anacapa (same time), always in hand and proving clearly best in the final furlong, easy early, strong late, splits of :24 flat, :35.2 and :47 flat, quite sharp for D. Pederson. Ran big in debut and can only get better.

American Cat (July 23, Del Mar, 5f, 1:01.1hg). Grade: B-
Slow early while head-and-head inside Hard Times ((4f, :48.2hg), was asked to pick it up midway and finished out reasonably well, splits of :25 flat, :49 flat and 1:01.4 on our watches for D. Pederson. Has bit of run but seems like a down the road type.

                        Sumter (July 30, Del Mar, 7f, 1:26h). Grade: B-
Went off quickly and paid the price late in this solo seven furlong drill, final three furlongs in :38 flat. Much better mover on grass and likely will stick to the lawn.

Divinely Bolt (July 30, Del Mar, 4f, :47.4hg). Grade: B-
Ridden from the gate and was kept to some pressure most of the way while proving much best over Aloha Kitten (4f, :48.1hg) and Tizzy Twister (4f, :48.4hg), splits of :24 flat, :35.3 and :48.1 on our watches, a couple of ticks slower than given for S. Ruis. Has some run but doesn’t strike us as a particularly quick sort from the gate. The others didn’t show much.

Princess Bettina (July 28, Del Mar, 4f, :47.3hg). Grade: B
Nice gate drill inside Cheekiest (4f, :48.1hg) for P. Eurton, hard held in a moderate opening quarter (:24.1) but then picking it up entering the first turn and drawing clear with authority, :35.3, and :48 flat on our watches before galloping out with plenty left, easing into five furlongs in 1:01.3. Has more speed than she was allowed to show here and acts like a filly with some ability. Fit enough by now.

Fast and Shiny (July 31, Del Mar, 4f, :48hg). Grade: B
Under a nice hold inside Fort Bragg (same time) in gate drill for Baffert while actually working a full five furlongs with splits of :24.2, :36.1, :48.4 and 1:02 flat, able to go faster if allowed to. Quick-actioned filly by Bernardini has a series of fast works on her resume and should be a live item first time out.

                        Doinitthehardway (July 31, Del Mar, 5f, :59.2hg). Grade: B+
Slightly second best inside National Treasure (same time) for B. Baffert in gate work without undue pressure, splits of :23.4, :35.1, :47.1 and :59.4 on our watches with ‘Treasure edging clear outside in the final stages of the drill. Street Sense filly certainly has some ability and should be more than fit and cranked up by now.

                        Getthemoney (July 24, Del Mar, 5f, :58.4hg). Grade: B+
Blazing gate work for B. Koriner while much best over Don’tthinkjustdoit (5f, 1:00hg), never really asked much, finishing in hand and with something left, splits of :23.3, :35 flat, :46.4 and :58.4 on our watches, very impressive. Daughter of Midnight Lute looks like the real deal and will take some beating in debut.

Ten Rings (July 29, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00.4h). Grade: B-
In blinkers, ridden through the lane while lumbering home with a final half mile in :23.3 and :48.1 for J. Wong. Was a game winner in his debut at Los Alamitos, should find this group much tougher but she is bred to run long and improve with experience.

Queen of Thorns (July 24, Del Mar, 6f, 1:12.4h). Grade: B+
Can’t verify final time (picked this team up approaching the quarter pole) but went very nicely for P. Eurton to be even but slightly best over Lady Aces (same time), mild coaxing only in the final stages while coming the final quarter mile in a sharp :23.4 (and then galloped out well). Freshened since spring, coming back better than she left, won her debut easily so we know she can fire fresh.

Big Treat (July 31, Del Mar, 4f, :47hg). Grade: B+
In blinkers, clearly best over 2-year-old Electric Glide (5f, :59.2hg, three lengths back when eased up after five furlongs), some coaxing early but mostly in hand late, (plenty left), splits of :23.4, :35 flat, :46.4 and :59.2 for a full five furlongs on our watches. Won her only start by 10 lengths in April of 2021 but had to be stopped on, returns with all of her speed, and appears to be dead fit and ready for Hanson.

Absolutely Zero (July 24, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00h). Grade: B
Went off slowly, was asked to pick it up midway and finished well enough while being ridden out mildly, splits of :25.1, :37 flat and 1:00.3 on our watches, nice in the final stages. Probably will do her best eventually when given more distance to work with but is perfect in two starts in abbreviated sprints so far.

R ROSE' ALL DAY is the most competitive wager in this race. Looks solid versus this group and will most likely be one of the leaders. She has been running well lately while recording strong speed figs. The speed figure of 58 from her last affair looks quite good in here. ROLL GYPSY ROLL - The odds might be just right on this one. Have to look at solely on class, with some of the top class figs of this group. STEPHANIE'S CHARM - With Beato controlling the reins on her, this filly will almost certainly be able to break out early in here. Looks to have a formidable class edge based on the most recent company kept.

                            # 4 MS BUMBLEBEE 10/1
A C'S OLIVIA ROSE has a decent shot to take this race. Offspring of this sire have produced competitive gains recently in their first asking race. Looks very strong against this group of horses and should be one of the leaders. I can't pass on this filly given one of the most respectable jockey and trainer combos on the grounds. AMY D - Deserves a chance given strong bloodlines. Recent figures for the rider - 18 win percent - make this filly stand out in this group of horses in this race. MS BUMBLEBEE - Will almost certainly go to the front end and should never look back. Lately Parsons has provided bettors with a strong winning percentage with horses running in dirt sprint races. With a solid ROI of +6 this trainer has shown very good results with entries running at this distance and surface.
