Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 20)

Saturday’s racing is an afternoon/evening program at Seoul with 10 races from 14:50 to 21:00. Here are the previews:

    Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile filly maidens go here with seven of the twelve racing for the first time. We’ll side with experience for the first couple of picks though and (7) SUPREME STAR is likely to start as favourite based on her debut on July 23rd, when she led almost the entire way around, only to get caught in the closing stages and finishing 2nd in a good time. She won’t need to improve too much on that to win here. (9) HAENGBOKAN MUNMAK was well backed on debut having won a trial and ran fairly, sitting midfield and running on for 3rd. With some natural improvement, she will be there or thereabouts for this. Among the debut-makers, (5) SAENAE QUEEN went through two July trials, winning one in a good time. From a good draw, she is one of the likely pacesetters here. (6) COMPLETE ANGEL won her trail and is another who can make a bold showing first-up. Also notable among the first-timers is (11) RAON THE QUALITY. She finished well back behind Saenae Queen in her trial but is “full” sister to Raon The Spurt, who went close in the filly Triple Crown races this year.
Selections (7) Supreme Star (9) Haengbokan Munmak (5) Saenae Queen (6) Complete Angel
    Next Best 11, 1
    Fast Start 5, 6, 7, 8

    Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Three-year-old maidens and (5) TANGJA will be the favourite. He has a 2nd and a 3rd from his latest two having been on pace both times. He’ll be on pace here as well and after a seven-week layoff and with Moon Se-young climbing aboard, he should be ready to win. (1) HUIMANG GADEUK returns to action for the first time since January. Her best in three outings was a 5th but she looked well when runner-up in a trial in a quick time on July 29th. She draws very nicely here and could be intriguing. (9) HANGANG DOLPUNG has placed twice in four starts including a 3rd at his latest on July 16th in a good time over this distance. He’ll go close here. (7) MIGHTY ANN and (10) P N S THE KING are other potential placers.
Selections (5) Tangja (1) Huimang Gadeuk (9) Hangang Dolpung (7) Mighty Ann
    Next Best 10, 11
    Fast Start 1, 5, 7, 12

    Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

    (10) KINGS EYE has made steady progress across three starts to date, running 3rd on his latest appearance on June 25th when settling back and running on. He comes slightly up in trip today and it might be just what he needs to make his breakthrough. (6) K N TIZWON looks the logical main danger. He comes in off back-to-back 3rd place finishes, most recently at this distance in a good time on July 30th. An apprentice jockey keeps his weight down again and he could well be on the pace from the start. (8) DIVINE FUTURES has shown good consistency recently and has two 3rd places to his name, one at this distance. He can settle midfield and run on into some money again. (1) JILJUUI KHAN and (5) CHEONSONGI, both much improved at their respective latest starts, are others in at least the placing frame.
    Selections (10) Kings Eye (6) K N Tizwon (8) Divine Futures (1) Jiljuui Khan
    Next Best 5, 7
    Fast Start 3, 4, 6, 10

    Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Another race with another probable short-priced favourite, this time in the shape of (4) K FRENZY. He is yet to win in twelve attempts but has no fewer than seven top-three finishes and comes in after a narrow defeat at class and distance on July 16th. He can be on pace or handy in this field and may take some beating. If he does come up short again, (2) PIEONADA is the logical one to beat him. He has a 2nd and two 3rd place finishes from his latest three outings, all off them at class and distance and has consistently recorded good times. He draws well and is a danger. (3) TTEOOREUDA was a solid 4th on her first try at this class on July 23rd. She comes down slightly in the weights here and can go close again. The up in class (1) CHOEGANG JANGSAN, as well as (8) SMART POWER are among others in the money hunt.
    Selections (4) K Frenzy (2) Pieonada (3) Tteooreuda (1) Choegang Jangsan
    Next Best 8, 6
    Fast Start 4, 5, 6, 9

    Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

    (10) RAON GIANT ran out an eye-catching winner on debut over 1000M on July 16th having previously won a trial. She comes up in class as well as in distance, but neither should be an issue and she will be a big favourite to maintain her 100% record here. (5) INNER PEACE remains a maiden, but she too comes up in class following two 3rd places and a 2nd at class 6. She has registered good times along the way and from a good draw, she can challenge for the lead and measure up in this company. (2) EUNHYE SERVE ran out a class and distance winner on July 24th, getting her maiden win at the tenth time of asking. She only comes up 2kg as a result and from a good draw, she can be competitive again. (9) HUIMANG CHAMP and (6) IMUGI, the latter at probable big odds, can also be considered for places.
Selections (10) Raon Giant (5) Inner Peace (2) Eunhye Serve (9) Huimang Champ
    Next Best 6, 8
    Fast Start 3, 5, 9, 10

    Seoul Race 6: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

    (2) DAEMUL may have finished last in the Korean Derby, but he returned to shallower waters and ran a good 3rd this class and distance on July 17th, racing on the pace. He was the beaten favourite that day and from a good gate, he will be strongly backed to get it right this time. (8) MENI GOLD returns to action for the first time since last December. He looked very well when cruising home in a trial at the end of July and if he brings that form to the races, he won’t be far away here. (3) CUPID JUMBO has placed on both tries so far at this class, both over 1300M. She has been back to trial since her latest start in May and looked well in her heat. She can maintain her consistent run of form here. (1) JANGSU NABOM and the up in class (12) AL SIMON others in the frame.
Selections (2) Daemul (8) Meni Gold (3) Cupid Jumbo (1) Jangsu Nabom
    Next Best 12, 9
    Fast Start 1, 7, 8, 9

    Seoul Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

This is a competitive race. (9) RAON THE ARIA is a winner of three of her last four including her latest, at class and distance on July 9th when she sat handy and proved too strong. An apprentice gets on today, which keeps her carried weight nice and low, and she can continue her good run of form here. (8) MUNHAK STORM is a half-brother to Korea Cup winner Moonhak Chief and while he hasn’t quite matched his achievements, he looks to be working towards a win, with a 2nd and a 3rd from his latest two. He is an on-pace type and if he can get to the lead, he can be in this a long way. (2) MIGHTY KICK beat Munhak Storm when the pair finished 2nd and 3rd over class and distance on July 10th. He draws nicely and can be competitive again. (6) BAEKDU GIRL and (7) ELITE LINE are others in at least the minor money hunt.
Selections (9) Raon The Aria (8) Munhak Storm (2) Mighty Kick (6) Baekdu Girl
    Next Best 7, 10
    Fast Start 1, 8, 9, 10

    Seoul Race 8: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Another competitive affair. We’ll side with (3) GLOBAL MAGIC, who won well over this distance at class 5 level three starts back and has held his own in two subsequent efforts at this class. He got a bit far back in both of those before running on, but he may be ridden a little further forward today and he has every chance. (8) ARFONS is another entering in good form. He comes in off a strong 3rd place over 1400M on July 24th when on pace throughout and the addition of Moon Se-young in the saddle may make him the betting favourite. He will be on pace again and should be in this a long way. Draw a line through the latest effort from (4) NAESAENGAE CHOEGO when he started slowly and was never a factor. He has run some good times at the distance and with a better break, can be competitive here. (5) BEST TIME and (2) TAPDOWN others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (3) Global Magic (8) Arfons (4) Naesaengae Choego (5) Best Time
    Next Best 2, 1
    Fast Start 3, 6, 7, 8

    Seoul Race 9: Class 3 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

    (2) EAST IMPACT has been underwhelming in his latest two outings but the winner of five from twelve should have far too much for this limited set of opposition. From a great draw, he should be on pace or handy and can return to the winner’s circle today. The recent form of the rest isn’t especially convincing although (3) GEOMPO can go well on his day. He too can take advantage of a nice draw in this small field to get forward early and he has solid placing claims. So too (1) WONDERFUL RUBY. She was a good winner over 1400M and class 4 level three starts back and while down in trip here, she can be competitive. (6) STRIDE UP and (4) SEMYEONG GISANG others who can dispute the minors.
Selections (2) East Impact (3) Geompo (1) Wonderful Ruby (6) Stride Up
    Next Best 4, 7
    Fast Start 1, 2, 3, 7

    Seoul Race 10: Class 2 (2000M) Allowance / KRW 90 Million

Probably the most competitive race of the day. (8) QUEENS TOUR comes in having made all to win well at class and distance back on June 25th. That was her third win in her last four starts and while she comes up a couple of kilos in the weights, she has every chance of a repeat. (7) BALVENIE comes up in class and in distance having won over 1800M back in May. He has had three months off since then but is back down in the weights and can measure up in this company. (12) JOUNIGA and (3) DORAON POPEYE came home 2nd and 3rd when they raced one another – and quite a few of the others who go here – at class and distance on July 16th. While the former isn’t favoured by the draw today, both can be competitive again. (11) GAROSUGIL has run well in two starts at this class and comes up to this distance for the first time looking an each-way chance.
Selections (8) Queens Tour (7) Balvenie (12) Jouniga (3) Doraon Popeye
    Next Best 11, 4
    Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 11

Del Mar Picks: Oaks turf race draws Spendarella on August 20
      By J.N. Campbell

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Picks: Saturday, August 20, 2022

      Race 1: 5-6-2-4
      Race 2: 6-3-8-4
      Race 3: 4-2-3-7
      Race 4: 6-3-1-4
      Race 5: 3-7-6-8
      Race 6: 6-9-2-5
      Race 7: 8-10-3-11
      Race 8: 11-14-3-9
      Race 9: 4-2-5-10
      Race 10: 3-11-6-4
Most Likely Winner: Fearless Girl #6 (Race 4)
Best Value: Tea N Conversation #6 (Race 2)

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Fearless Girl #6, 3/1):

We know that trainer Phil D’Amato has a strong turf stable at the ready, and this mare by Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) is looking to build on a nice victory last time out at the Meet. She reunites with regular rider Umberto Rispoli, and that is a good decision considering his affinity for the green. The bump in class is not going to be a cinch, but her level of fitness is quite strong right now. She has wind beneath those wings of hers …

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

      Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 2: Tea N Conversation #6, 6/1):

We are facing a tough turf race on the Jimmy Durante, and it is never easy with a bunch of precocious 2-yr-olds. I like one of the Spendthrift-owned runners because this daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) already has her debut in the books. Even though she did not display much talent, this is not unusual because sometimes they are just trying to figure out what is going on. The switch from the Del Mar MT to the grass might be just the right move at this point. Florent Geroux is incredibly adept in circumstances like these, and I am expecting a good result at a nice square price.

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Turf, 1 1/8th, Del Mar Oaks (G1), $300k, 3F):

We have a cadre of Phil D’Amato entries that will be going up against Graham Motion’s Gainesway ace. I am sure that the Maryland-based trainer will have the favorite come post time, especially after Spendarella’s #11 success during the 1st half of 2022. After rattling off 3 wins in-a-row at Gulfstream and Keeneland, her conditioner made the decision to go after that elusive Royal Ascot victory he has sought for many years. It did not pan out, but the well-bred filly by Karokontie sure did give a huge effort in defeat. The Coronation Stakes (G1) always draws a tough crowd, and this year was no exception. Let’s put it this way … if Motion’s 3-yr-old is up to scratch, she will probably crush this field. Barring some traffic troubles, Tyler Gaffalione has his orders … get on or close to the lead, and hold it. As for D’Amato’s crew, I am only interested in Island of Love #3. By Kodiac (GB), she already has some nice SoCal turf form to her credit. I actually thought that she and Juan Hernandez performed against some serious adversity in the San Clemente (G2) back on 23 July. She has some tactical skills that can really make a difference, if she can steer clear of roadblocks. It would be a dream to get double-digit odds on this one. Speaking of numbers that lead to payouts, I would not overlook George Papaprodromou’s well-meant filly by Churchill (IRE). Lady Clementine #14 might be drawn far to the outside, but I like the way she cleared in that MSW80k at Del Mar at the end of last month. She is sharp right now, and with some luck, she has a chance to grab a piece of the action. If you can put together a reasonable set of exotic tickets, this race will pay handsomely. The directions are numerous … and anything can happen … it’s turf racing!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/11/14

Saratoga Picks: Late Pick 4 includes Nest as a Single on August 20
          By J.N. Campbell

Saratoga Picks: Saturday, August 20, 2022

          Race 1: 2-4-6-7
          Race 2: 6-1-3-5
          Race 3: 4-3-1-6

          Race 10: 4-7-3-2
          Race 11: 4-9-6-8
Most Likely Winner: Nest #4 (Race 10)
Best Value: Sarah Harper #4 (Race 9)

          Late Pick 4 … Races 8-11 …

          Race 8: Turf, 1 1/16th, Lake Placid S. (G2), $200k, 3F

As we begin this Late Pick 4 sequence, I am pretty convinced that all of the participants from the Lake George (G3) are not up for a contest like this one. Chad Brown’s best chance in this race is his More Than Ready filly, Consumer Spending #4. Owned by Seth Klarman, this talented router was 3rd just behind Charlie Appleby’s With The Moonlight #1. That daughter of Frankel (GB) tracks the pace well, and she finishes with a flourish for Godolphin. If she in on her game, I am betting that replacement rider, Luis Saez, will win the prize. Let’s go with this pair, and move along to the next leg …

          Leg 1: 1/4 (2-Deep)

          Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Box, 1 w 4

Group 1 racing returns on Saturday with the Winx Stakes headlining a terrific 10-race card at Royal Randwick. The track is rated a Soft 6 but dry weather is expected, so we should see an upgrade into the Good range by Saturday, while the rail is out 3m for the entire course. Racing is scheduled to get underway at 11:30am AEST.

              Race 1: Class 2 Highway Handicap (1100m)

The Highway races are never ones we are too keen to play into, but there does look to be a couple of smart horses stepping out. Both Bandi’s Boy and the Tim Donnelly-trained PARTICIPATOR appear to be above average, and the latter is where we are siding. The four-year-old won his first two starts on his home track at Wagga, before tackling a Class 3 Highway in February over 1200m. The son of Contributer finished fourth on that occasion, just a length behind Testator Silens, Anethole and Golden Point, while he beat home subsequent Group 1 winner Shelby Sixtysix. The wide barrier isn’t pleasant, but this horse does have the ability to overcome the draw.

              Race 2: Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m)

The stayers get their chance in the second, with a couple of nice horses going around. We were with MONFELICITY on the weekend that just went and she was one of many victims of bad luck, so we are happy to forgive and forget. The David Payne-trained mare steps straight out to 2400m which is going to suit her down to the ground, while a dry Randwick deck should also be to her liking given she won here first-up over the mile. The four-year-old by Vadamos is once again going to get the right run in transit from barrier two under William Pike, and with a bigger track and a more genuinely run race, we are confident that the runs will come when needed. The mare by Vadamos can hit back hard on Saturday, we are just getting a fifth of the price.

              Race 3: Benchmark 72 Midway Handicap (1600m)

David Payne can make it a race-to-race double on Saturday, with last-start Midway winner BAZOOKA looking hard to beat. The five-year-old gelding exploded late on August 6 over 1800m here at Randwick in a similar race to win by nearly three lengths, and although he comes back to the mile on Saturday, he will be going close again. James McDonald has retained the ride on the son of Smart Missile, and from barrier eight, the pair will get a beautiful run in transit. We aren’t overly keen to bet in the race, but the top weight should be winning.

You don’t have to have much on at these odds, but the $81 available for FUN FACT is good enough for us to step in. The grey front-running seven-year-old hasn’t won since October 2020 and he rarely fires a shot first-up, but although his fresh record reads 6:0-0-1, one of those runs was in a Group 3 where he was beaten only two lengths and another was in the Golden Eagle where he was simply outclassed. This is the easiest race he’s faced in a while, he has trialled really well and apprentice jockey Dylan Gibbons is a terrific booking. If he does no work and gets a soft lead, he could be in it for a while on top of the ground.

Race 5: Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m)

We really like ROCKETING BY in the Show County on Saturday for a number of reasons. The David Pfieffer-trained gelding had plenty of promise early in his career, winning the $1 million Inglis Sprint back in 2021 before going on to tackle some better races. He had a run in October in the Sydney Stakes, before having a long lay off. This time in, the son of So You Think has had two nice trials and resumed with a good seventh behind Easy Single on July 30. He loomed and looked the winner at one point there, but a lack of fitness probably told late. Now second-up, Rocketing By drops 5kg, gets on to a dry track and steps out to 1200m, so we are confident that we will see a very competitive racehorse.

              Race 6: Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2000m)

David Payne will be hoping we have our eye in, because we are tipping another one of his horses in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup. We were filthy we weren’t with RAGING BULL when he won last Saturday given we tipped him in the Australian Derby and Rosehill Guineas, but we can’t dwell on the past. The son of Bull Point was one of the wins of the day at Rosehill Gardens, coming down the middle of the track to win well over 1800m. He had to carry 61kg on Saturday and was forced to the worst part of the track, so there was plenty of merit in that win. Now dropping 7kg to 54kg and stepping out to 2000m, we expect Raging Bull to be competitive once again. He showed he has Group class, so this could be the preparation for him to prove it.

BELLA NIPOTINA is a dual acceptor both here in Sydney and at Moonee Valley, but with the threat of facing Extremely Lucky in Melbourne, we are hoping that she will line up in this race. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained mare has always shown a great deal of talent, winning four races and placing 13 times. The five-year-old by Pride Of Dubai has placed twice in Group 1 company, but a career peak of hers was winning the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes at this track over 1200m in April, before going to Adelaide to be beaten three lengths in both the Group 1 Sangster Stakes and Group 1 Goodwood Handicap. She looked like a jet in her recent trial win at Cranbourne, and with James McDonald booked in this Group 3 event, we are expecting her to be too classy, despite the weight. She will be winning if she comes to Sydney.

              Race 8: Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m)

There is always plenty of debate as to whether the Winx Stakes should be a Group 1, but nevertheless, it is and a stellar field has been assembled. Seven individual Group 1 winners take their place, with 14 top-tier titles between them. Mo’unga is back to defend his crown in the first Group 1 of the season, while Anamoe is looking to kick off his Cox Plate campaign with a top-level victory. Three stayers are in the race, with Stockman, Benaud and champion mare Duais all lining up, while Chris Waller’s Fangirl and Hinged are now aiming to add Group 1 wins to their name as four-year-olds.

Race 9: Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m)

A classy field of 15 three-year-old fillies take their place in Saturday’s Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m. While there are a number of Group winners in this field, we are siding with the only maiden galloper in the race. SNITCAT is winless from five starts, but she has been in the minor money three times, including a third in the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) in January. The filly by Snitzel has a terrific fast-finishing burst on her which she will be able to use on Saturday, given that there is plenty of pace in the race. She has trialled up well twice this time in, and Brenton Avdulla got a feel for her at her most recent trial appearance. If there’s a knockout in this race, we think it is from this filly. There is plenty of value to be found in this race though, so go wide in your quaddie.

To round out the afternoon, we have a big field contesting a Benchmark 78 over 1200m. A horse that we have always had a bit of time for is the Kim Waugh-trained CONRAD, who comes off a brilliant last-start win at Canterbury. The son of Maurice has won three of his eight career starts, while he has finished in the minor money on two separate occasions. Drawn barrier three on Saturday with Nash Rawiller in the saddle once again, the four-year-old is likely to get a beautiful run in transit in the middle of the pack, before coming out into clear air and letting down with his terrific turn of speed. The dry track will be a bonus and he looks ready for 1200m now third-up.

Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday, and while there are no features, some good events are programmed. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents you with his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, which is scheduled to get underway at 11:38am AEST. The surface is rated a Soft 5 at the moment, while the rail will be set 2m out for the entire course.
Best Bet at Doomben – Merimee

We are going to turn a bit of a blind eye to the fact that Merimee has to jump from barrier 17, because we are confident she is going super and will win this. Trained by Chris Waller and to be ridden by James Orman, this four-year-old by Winning Rupert has superior form to that of her rivals. In March, she ran a terrific second behind Gypsy Goddess over 1600m in her last run for the prep, before resuming with a fast-finishing second behind Hatchet at Doomben over 1200m. Hatchet came out and won his next start by three lengths, while Merimee went back to the trials and did everything you would have wanted to see if you were an owner. The elephant in the room is the carpark barrier, but she goes back anyway and we’ve seen her come from last to win at Doomben in the past, so it isn’t that big of a deal. She’s had a trial between runs, so the rise to 1600m second-up doesn’t concern us, and Orman knows her well.

Next Best at Doomben – Otyrar

Otyrar was good to us when winning at this track over 2060m last Wednesday, so we are going back to the well with him in the staying race of the day. While favourite and stablemate Za Ceibas will be hard to beat, there is plenty of merit in what Otyrar has been doing. The son of New Approach has had two starts in Queensland now, going down by a length to his talented stablemate Podium over 1600m before backing up seven days later over 2060m to win. He steps out to 2200m now, which will suit, and with horses like Stubai, Bump’n’run and Windermere in the race, there will be no shortage of speed, setting it up for Ben Thompson and Otyrar. The five-year-old gets in with 3.5kg less than what he carried in his last-start victory, so he looks dangerous.

Best Value at Doomben – Aussie Nugget

Tony Gollan and Angela Jones combine with Aussie Nugget in the first leg of the daily quaddie. The six-year-old hasn’t been in the winner’s circle for 80 weeks, with his last win coming back in January last year at Caulfield. The seven-year-old son of Dansili had his first start in Queensland over 1350m at this track on August 6, when he closed off well to run sixth. Gollan has the ability to turn these horses around, and we are backing him to do so with this one as he gets out to 1600m. Only four starts ago, Aussie Nugget finished fourth at Listed grade in Adelaide behind Regalo Di Gaetano, and if he can find some of that form, he will go close to winning this off-season Benchmark 80 Handicap. He only has to carry 56.5kg after Jones’ claim, so he gets in exceptionally well in a race like this.

HorseBetting’s Western Australian racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections for Saturday’s nine-race program at Belmont. The track is rated a Heavy 9 and the rail is out 6m for the entire course. The first of nine races is set to jump at 12:33pm AWST.
Best Bet at Belmont – Advanced

There might not be much of a price around for Advanced, but his racing form and recent trial suggest he will be hard to beat first-up on Saturday. The Michael Grantham-trained four-year-old has only raced six times, but he already has two wins and a second to his name, with both victories coming on Soft tracks, so the Heavy 9 will be to his liking. Drawn the inside alley, the son of Playing God will be ridden positively by Patrick Carbery, while the light weight will help him skip through the ground. He’s a horse going places.

Next Best at Belmont – Mood Swings

Six-year-old gelding Mood Swings looks well suited to bounce back on Saturday when he lines up in his third run for the preparation. The son of War Chant was racing really well earlier in the year, finishing his autumn campaign with two wins and a second to Group performer Buzzoom. After going down narrowly first-up over this course and distance, trainer George Dupre sent him around on a Heavy 9 over the Belmont 1200m and he was beaten seven lengths. While the Heavy 9 is a concern again, he shouldn’t have to do too much work early from barrier four in order to be in a prominent spot and give the race a shake.

Best Value at Belmont – Union Jack

You won’t see many early three-year-olds going around with as many runs as what Union Jack has had, but when you race as well as he has been, you can’t blame connections for racing him often. From his 11 starts, the son of Patronize has won just the one race, but he has been in the minor money on four other occasions. From those four placings, he’s been beaten by some smart ones, including Baby Paris and Paddy’s Lad, while the likes of Amelia’s Jewel and Aztec Ruler have beaten him home in other races. After breaking his maiden two starts ago in a real dogfight with Sunplay, Union Jack had to fight hard in his most recent outing too, with this photo finish going against him. He’s fit, he’s tough and he’s battle-hardened, so we expect him to run a big race at the goods odds on offer with online Bookmakers.

Spring is in the air as racing heads to Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon, where the Listed Carlyon Stakes over 1000m is the feature event on the nine-race program. Despite plenty of rain in Melbourne throughout the last week, the track is expected to be in the Soft 6 range, with the rail out 5m for the entire circuit. Many a rising star has used this meeting at The Valley in recent years as a launching pad for greater success throughout the spring, meaning there may be a few to follow out of Saturday’s card. The massive day of racing kicks off at 12:55pm AEST.
Carlyon Stakes Top Tip: Extremely Lucky

Last-start Lightning Stakes winner Extremely Lucky from the Will Clarken yard gets her opportunity to show her class when she steps out in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m). The four-year-old gelding unleashed a devastating turn of foot when sprinting the better in albeit weaker company than what he faces on Saturday. However, his win was visually as impressive as anything you will see, and a similar effort has him right up to his neck in a race like this. The $3.20 on offer may be a little tight, but that just shows how highly rated he is. Jamie Kah reunites with the Extreme Choice gelding, and with the likes of Yulong Command, Esta La Roca and Generation all wanting to lead, the race looks perfectly set-up for Extremely Lucky to fly home down the centre of the track.

                    Race 8 – Silk #4 Extremely Lucky (6)

                    4yo Gelding | T: Will Clarken | J: Jamie Kah (58kg)

                    McKenzie Stakes Top Tip: Crosswinds

Following a five-month spell, we are willing to side with the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Crosswinds when he returns to the Moonee Valley 1200m in the McKenzie Stakes. The three-year-old Written Tycoon colt has already picked up a Listed race at the track and trip, saluting in the St Albans Stakes back on March 25 when unleashing a sharp turn of foot and beating home the likes of Nanagui, Sir Bailey and Bello Beau. This is no harder, and despite giving race favourite Foujita San a tactical advantage, we anticipate Crosswinds will appreciate the genuinely run 1200m first-up and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.

                    Race 5 – Silk #3 Crosswinds (7)

                    3yo Colt | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Mark Zahra (57.5kg)

                    $5.50 with Ladbrokes
Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Lackeen

Having smashed his rivals last time out at The Valley over 1600m, there looks to be no reason why the James Cummings-trained Lackeen cannot bring up consecutive victories at the track when he steps out over 1500m. The five-year-old gelding put 2.25 lengths on the smart Chief Altony last time out and if he runs up to that rating in a race like this, he looks to be a clear best bet of the day on Saturday. Craig Williams sticks on board which is a massive plus and despite most likely wanting to settle towards the rear of the field, Lackeen has the finishing burst to blow his rivals out of the water. The $3.30 on offer with some online betting sites looks a perfect price to load into.

Next Best at Moonee Valley: Proscenium Arch

Following a smart third-place finish behind the progressive Berkeley Square at Flemington on August 6 over 1410m, Proscenium Arch looks to be one of the better bets on the weekend. The run reeked of a filly wanting to get out over further, and despite this being just a 1500m event, the conditions on Saturday look to suit her perfectly. She gains the services of the returning Blake Shinn for this assignment, and the 21-time Group 1-winning jockey will aim to get her off the rail early enough to unleash her strong turn of foot. She meets Castillian – who beat her home at Flemington by a whisker – better at the weights, and barring any traffic concerns, Proscenium Arch looks the one they have to beat.

Best Value at Moonee Valley: Prix De Turn

There are not many horses who finish fourth, beaten by over four lengths, that scream ‘back me next time’, but that is exactly what Prix De Turn’s first-up effort at The Valley on July 30 suggested. The four-year-old from the Matthew Brown stable was only just getting warm inside the final 100m of a 1600m event, and with the step up to 2040m on Saturday, he is sure to appreciate the extra couple of furlongs. He drops 5kg from his last run and gains the services of the in-form Craig Williams for this. Having won the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes in the autumn at this track and trip, there looks to be no reason why he cannot bring up a second win from as many starts at the infamous 2040m at The Valley. The $14 with Bookmakers is a ludicrous price for a Group 2 winner going around in a race like this.

The Murray Bridge Racing Club is the destination for metropolitan racing in South Australia for the weekend, with nine races set down for decision. With rain forecast in the 24 hours leading up to raceday, we are set to be racing on a deteriorating Soft 6, while the rail will remain in the true position for the meeting. As the day goes on, we anticipate jockeys will look to head towards the centre of the track upon entering the home straight. The first race is set to jump at 12:02pm ACST.
Best Bet at Murray Bridge: Night Of Delight

Fresh off bolting in at Swan Hill under a relative hold in her first start for Tom Dabernig, Night Of Delight simply looks to be the best bet of the day on Saturday. She settled midfield during that win on August 7 and hit the front at the 200m mark, putting close to five lengths on her rivals in a truly dominant display. Despite the tricky draw in barrier seven, there looks to be enough early speed in the race to guarantee that the five-year-old mare gains cover upon settling. The race looks perfectly set-up for a sprinter armed with a strong finishing burst to charge over the top of some vulnerable leaders.

Next Best at Murray Bridge: Intrepid Eagle

Following a comfortable debut victory at the Murray Bridge 1200m on August 6, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Intrepid Eagle returns to the track and trip, this time in a 0-62 handicap. The three-year-old gelding showed a nice turn of foot after settling up on speed to put an easy 1.5 lengths on his closest rival. From gate 12, the son of Alpine Eagle will need to show clean barrier manners once again under Barend Vorster. If he does so, he looks the one to settle outside the leader once again. In what looks to be an easy step up in class, Intrepid Eagle should prove too good for this lot with a repeat effort of his debut win.

Best Value at Murray Bridge: Dixie Whistler

Gordon Richards & Damien Moyle send their five-year-old mare Dixie Whistler back to Murray Bridge, where she will be looking to bring up a fourth win from her last five starts. Having strung together three wins in succession, she went to Morphettville on August 13 and seemingly found the 2000m a touch too short for this point in her career. She steps up to the 2500m on Saturday, and considering she has won at 2100m and 2200m this prep, we anticipate the 2500m journey will be no hinderance to her chances. From barrier, look for Lachie Neindorf to use his 1.5kg claim to his advantage and have Dixie Whistler bounding along out in front. If she is anywhere near her best, she will make a mockery of the $16 price some online Bookmakers are offering.

Alice Springs Turf Club will host a five-race card on Saturday, August 20. Northern Territory specialist David White brings you his race-by-race betting preview along with free tips and the best odds available. First race is set to commence 2:37pm local time.
                        Race 1 (2.37pm) – $18,500 Ladbrokes Bet Ticker 0-64 Handicap (1200m)

Like A Heartbeat performed with distinction in 14 starts in South Australia with three wins, a second, two thirds, two fourths and a fifth before making his NT debut on Darwin Cup Day on the first Monday of August 2021. The six-year-old gelding failed to make an impression in his two starts at Fannie Bay and, to be fair, his next two starts in Alice Springs left a lot to be desired. However, Like A Heartbeat’s next 16 starts at Pioneer Park since last October have resulted in four wins, five seconds, two thirds, three fourths and a fifth, so it’s clear he thrives in the Red Centre. His last win was over 1000m (0-70) on June 5 and he was placed in two of his next three races before a last-start third over 1100m (0-64) on August 6. The only danger in the five-horse field appears to be Elmore Lad, who is returning to Victoria after a solid Darwin Cup Carnival campaign. That includes a last-start win over 1200m (0-62) on July 27. It’s hard to see Toffiato, King Crab and Hard Work Rewards winning, so the battle for third place will prove intriguing.

                        Race 2 (3.09pm) – $22,000 Daryl Braithwaite September 17 Handicap (1100m)

Glock promised plenty when he arrived in the Red Centre after forging a respectable career in NSW and Queensland, but finished fifth on his Pioneer Park debut on June 19 over 1200m in open company before failing to make an impact a fortnight later when eighth over 1100m (0-76). The six-year-old gelding showed his true colours when he arrived in the Top End for the Darwin Cup Carnival, finishing second over 1100m (0-70) on July 16 before a last-start win in the Montgomerie Lightning (1000m) on August 1. Glock is capable of getting his first win in Alice Springs, but it will be no easy task against what is a strong field. Mighty Murt races well in either the Alice or Darwin, and he can bounce back after a seventh in the Palmerston Sprint (1200m) at Fannie Bay. Bar Gem has a good record at Pioneer Park, and although he hasn’t raced since May 1, he also boasts a good first-up record. Cut It Out is a last-start winner over 1100m (0-76) and has a 3kg claim. Roughly, a 10-year-old mare, is aiming for three straight wins. Devil’s Temptation wasn’t doing much wrong before a last-start 11th in the Palmerston on July 30. Cyclonite, Faolan and Kummerlings may not win, but could spring a surprise and finish among the minor placings.

Liberty Blue is still searching for that elusive first win at Pioneer Park and the big question remains as to whether or not he will finally crack it at the 12th attempt. The eight-year-old gelding started his career in South Australia in January 2019 before heading to the Alice in March-April 2021 for three seconds in four starts. It was back to SA before returning to Central Australia in April-May and posting two seconds in four starts. After heading back down south, he made a third visit to the Red Centre for a second and third in July before a last-start second over 1200m (0-54) on August 6. In 51 starts, Liberty Blue has won twice and has finished second 15 times. Will it be stablemate Ananagram, a winner over 1000m (0-58) on July 24 before coming second over 1100m (0-64) on August 6, who spoils the party? Speed Wheel, who broke her maiden status two weeks ago, and Golden Ripples aren’t out of it. Qualis was a last-start third in Darwin. Mackinaw debuts in the NT after winning a Tamworth maiden on July 8.

Rhythmical is unlikely to jump as favourite with online Bookmakers, but his form at Pioneer Park over the past 12 months stands up. The nine-year-old gelding has had 46 career starts – 31 in Alice Springs, 11 in Darwin and four in South Australia. Rhythmical had his first start at Morphettville on Melbourne Cup Day in 2016 and all of his seven wins have been achieved in Red Centre, which also includes nine minor placings. In 11 starts since August 21 last year, he has posted a win, three seconds, three thirds and two fourths before a last-start third over 1200m (0-54) on August 6. In his only other race during that period he lost the rider. A 3kg claim and the inside gate enhances Rhythmical’s prospects. Intercontinental (61kg) won over 1100m (0-54) on July 17 before coming third over 1200m (0-54) a fortnight ago. In July, Harbour Express (58kg) finished first (1100m) and sixth (1200m) at a 0-58 level before a last-start second over 1200m (0-54). Celine returns from a three-month spell and is above average, while Kenneth has impressed in his past three runs.

Fantasy Eagle has hardly done a thing wrong since arriving from NSW, where he had four wins in 20 starts and also finished among the minor placings eight times. The six-year-old gelding’s last race in NSW was on a bog at Hawkesbury on March 24 where he came 10th over 1600m (0-68). Fantasy Eagle debuted in the Alice on May 29 and finished second by the narrowest of margins over 1200m (0-70) before another close second over 1400m (0-64) on June 19. On July 24, he wasn’t that far away in fourth place over 1200m (0-64). A 3kg claim perhaps gives him an edge over the in-form Radio Room (57.5kg), who has only missed a place once in his past seven starts. Radio Room is a huge threat after a win over 1600m (0-64), a second over 1400m (0-70) and a third over 1600m (0-76) since July 17. He finished third behind Fantasy Eagle in that race on May 29. Exonerate can’t be discounted over 1400m at Pioneer Park. Envy Me has finished second in each of his last two starts. Rockford Files and Winter Harbour may find it tough going.

There’s no better feeling than Group 1 fever, and thankfully, it is back on Saturday with the running of the Winx Stakes at Royal Randwick. The first Group 1 of the new racing season has attracted 11 acceptors, with seven of those already Group 1 winners. The $750,000 event has proven to be a successful starting point for a number of Australia’s best horses in recent years, with the likes of Sunline, Lonhro, Winx and Verry Elleegant all kicking off spring campaigns with a victory in the 1400m race.

In this year’s edition, Anamoe will run as a $2.70 favourite in search of a fourth Group 1 win, while Forbidden Love ($5), defending champion Mo’unga ($6) and Chris Waller’s Group 1-winning Fangirl ($7.50) are the only other runners in single figures with Ladbrokes. Star mare Duais is rated a $15 chance ahead of her Melbourne Cup campaign, while the talented Profondo is a $14 hope as he looks to find his best again.

There doesn’t appear to be a natural leader in the race, so we expect that both Forbidden Love and Hinged ($12) will come across from their wide gates in search of the lead, while Anamoe, Mo’unga and Profondo are likely to settle down in the first half of the field. Duais and Fangirl will make their runs together in the closing stages, while Benaud, Stockman and Hilal will most likely be looking for further.

Continue reading to see HorseBetting.com.au’s top selections and $100 betting strategy for the 2022 Winx Stakes.

We are leaning the way of MO’UNGA in the early stages. The Annabel Neasham-trained five-year-old defeated the likes of Verry Elleegant, Think It Over and Cascadian in this race last year when resuming, and while this is a star-studded lineup of horse flesh, there aren’t necessarily any 1400m weight-for-age superstars in the race. Yes, Anamoe is a serious animal, but he was vulnerable first-up last preparation and he will no doubt be heading towards the Cox Plate again, so he might want further than seven furlongs. Mo’unga flies first-up, with three wins and two placings from five runs, while 1400m is arguably his best distance. In his recent barrier trial it looked like he didn’t want to be there, but that is what he does. On Saturday, the blinkers will go on and he will fire up and give this race a proper shake again. Tommy Berry will get every chance from barrier two also.

Obviously, ANAMOE is the one that they all have to beat. He has won seven of his 16 starts and earned over $4.8 million in prizemoney, so there’s little wonder he is one of the best horses in the land. Trained by James Cummings and to be ridden by James McDonald, the son of Street Boss has the X-factor to go all the way to Cox Plate glory, and if he didn’t lose a race all spring, it wouldn’t shock us. In saying that, we mentioned he can be touch-and-go when resuming, winning only one first-up run, and at this stage in his career he could be wanting further than 1400m. He hasn’t finished outside the first two in three runs over this distance, with a win in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and a runner-up effort in the Golden Rose coming over this trip, but in the autumn he didn’t really show a whole lot until he got to 2000m when winning the Rosehill Guineas by seven lengths. He’s a serious animal, but we’re happy to run the risk and go against him on Saturday.

DUAIS is one of our favourite horses, and while we would love to be with her on Saturday, she has much bigger fish to fry. The Edward Cummings-trained mare is on a path towards the first Tuesday in November, so we imagine this 1400m assignment in late August will only be a little tune-up. Cummings gave the mare by Shamus Award just one quiet trial on August 5 over 1000m, where she wasn’t asked to do anything under the man who knows her best, Joshua Parr. She races well fresh, has drawn well and has won at Randwick in the past, but we expect her to be winding up late and looking for much further. PROFONDO and FANGIRL are two four-year-olds that could jump out of their skins this spring, so we will be keeping close eyes on them too.

By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

                            DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:

                            First Race: Post: 2:00 PT
                            Top Pick: 5-Breakfast Ride (2-1)

Here a rapidly developing 3-year-old colt ready to take another successful step up the class ladder in this first-level allowance maiden track miler. The son of Distorted Humor pressed wicked fractions and then came away with complete authority to win a starter’s allowance race over this track and distance on opening day while improving his Beyer speed figure by a whopping 17 points over his previous career best, and a series of sharp workouts since that win a month ago indicates he still has plenty of improvement in him. Whether or not he’s on the front end or settles into a stalking position behind Street Ruckus (likely to be sent from the rail), this John Sadler-trained sophomore should be able exert his superiority when it matters. Exacta players should consider 4-Lammas underneath (and maybe as a saver in the various rolling exotics, too). The English-bred gelding tries dirt for the first time (trained well on it) and if given the patient ride he requires he could produce a serious late kick into the teeth of what projects to be a pretty quick pace. His Timeform ratings overseas are par for this level, so at 8-1 on the morning line he’s worth tossing in.

Tenth Race – Post: 6:34 PT
                            Top Pick: 5-Infinite Empire (6-1)

This well-regarded sophomore filly returned off a long layoff in a dirt sprint to finish steadily when fourth while appearing to need the race and today seems likely to step forward significantly while stretching out to a distance and surface she’s bred to love. The Richard Mandella-trained filly continues to impress in the morning, retains top rider Juan Hernandez, and should be able to settle in the first flight in a race that projects to have moderate early fractions. She is listed at 6-1 on the morning line and will offer excellent wagering value at or near that price. 6-Vivando is a logical exacta partner with our top pick. Runner-up in her last two starts under similar conditions, the daughter of Twirling Candy shows steadily rising speed figures, has worked nicely since raced, and figures to enjoy a comfortable second flight trip before having dead aim and every chance from the quarter pole home.

                            FIRST RACE:

Breakfast Ride (August 8, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00h). Grade: B+
Never really asked in solo five furlong main track breeze for Sadler, final three furlongs in :11.4 and :36 flat. Continues on the upgrade and should produce another forward move following his fast win opening day.

                            SECOND RACE:

Three Strands (July 28, Del Mar, 5f, 1:01hg). Grade: B
Just an average final time but went nicely for R. Mandella without really being asked, splits of :23.3, :35.1, :47.3 and 1:01.1, slowing up late but appearing to have something left. Has returned to breeze twice since this drill, both solid six furlong moves, which should have him plenty fit for his debut. Good-looking colt by Empire Maker has some quality.

Charges Dropped (August 13, Del Mar, 5f, :59.3h). Grade: B+
Pretty nice drill for turf mare working outside Ce Ce (same time) on the main track for M. McCarthy, even with the champion mare until deep stretch before falling back by almost a length under mild late urging (workmate breezing), final half mile in a solid :47.4. Has second level allowance conditions and should be primed for a strong effort.

Fearless Girl (August 4, Del Mar, 4f, :48.1h TC DU). Grade: B
A neck back at the wire in company outside Macadamia (4f, :48.2h TC DU) for P. D’Amato, both going well without undue pressure, both looking in good form. Comes off nice win over this course off a layoff and should be competitive on the one-level raise next time.

                            FIFTH RACE:

                            Hejazi (August 12, Del Mar, 5f, :59h). Grade: A-
Actually caught him a full six furlongs in 1:11.3 in terrific work while slightly best over talented older (3yo) Censorship (same time) for B. Baffert, in hand early, forced wide around the clubhouse while encountering traffic, and then responding to some coaxing to finish strongly and with something left. Bernardini colt cost $3.55 million at Timonium and looks the part.

Deliberate Risk (August 7, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00.1h). Grade: B
Finished under a nice hold while hitting the wire even with Arman (same time) after breaking off a few lengths in front for J. Sisterson, final three furlongs in a solid :36.1. Looks to have some ability but runners from this barn haven’t done much so far this meeting.

                            Nullarbor (August 6, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00.1hg). Grade: B –
Displayed good gate speed but was no match late inside Gandolfini (6f, 1:13.1hg) for Baffert, splits of :23.4, :35.1, :47.2 and 1:00.1 on our watches, a bit erratic early before losing his steam late. Has some gas, for sure, probably isn’t quite fit yet based on this drill.

Classical Cat (August 14, Del Mar, 5f, 1:01.4h). Grade: B-
Looked quite promising in team drill inside Curl Girl (same time) for P. D’Amato, as we caught this Mendelssohn colt the final three furlongs in :11.4 and :36.1 without being asked, plenty left late, while drawing away from ‘Girl with easy in the closing stages. Has been impressive in the a.m. since arriving from Los Alamitos and appears plenty fit. Good mover, suspect he’ll eventually excel over a distance of ground on turf.

Txope (August 14, Del Mar, 5f, 1:02.2h TC DU). Grade: B+
Broke off a couple of lengths behind Annie’s Song 5f, 1:03h TC DU) and rolled on by through the lane when given her cue, rather nice for European invader preparing for the Del Mar Oaks. Was a group stakes winner in Germany in her most recent start and has run well in group company in France as well, though her Timeform ratings are a tad lighter than the form would suggest.

Final half mile in :47.3, rather nice for J. Sadler while even with Riverside (same time, breezing, very good prospect) while maintaining her edge. Second in her last pair, overdue for a maiden win.

                              Top Pick: 5-Echo Again (9/5)

As this is written, trainer Steve Asmussen has won eight races form 30 starters at the current Saratoga meeting (27%), so by that metric he’s enjoyed a highly successful season. However, many of his maiden 2-year-olds have performed below expectations. This first time starter is supposed to be one of the barn’s best prospects, and as a son of Gun Runner from the dam of the speedy Pneumatic we’ll be anxious to see if he runs to his works. Based on video, this colt is immensely talented and owns enough speed to win at first asking and enough stamina (and pedigree) to run on later in his career. At 9/5 on the morning line (hope we can get it), we’ll make him a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

                              Ninth Race: Post: 5:02 ET
                              Top Pick: 4-Sarah Harper (12-1)

This year’s renewal of the Smart N Fancy Stakes is a wide-open affair for turf sprinting fillies and mares. Let’s take a shot at a price. 4-Sarah Harper has been away since January, she’s never won or placed in a stakes, and she’s never raced on turf. That’s why she’s 12-1 on the morning line. But there are a few reasons to believe that she will produce a career top effort. Her pedigree (on both sides) suggests she should improve considerably on grass. She has excellent gate speed but doesn’t need the lead to win, and projects to enjoy an ideal stalking trip behind need-the-lead sprinter 3-Robin Sparkles. She has trained exceptional well for her comeback, lands Flavian Prat, and has speed figures that are within striking range of what it will take to win this race. Finally, she has every right to be a better filly now than she was six months ago. All and all, she’s a gamble worth taking. Among those that warrant inclusion on backup tickets (or in exactas and/or trifectas are 9-Caravel (assured a clean trip from her cozy outside post and with several prior races that are good enough to win) and 6-Miss J McKay (below her best with troubled trips in her last pair but more than good enough to win on her best day with good racing luck).

                              FIFTH RACE:

Conversing (August 14, Saratoga, 4f, :52b TT TC DU). Grade: B-
Slightly second best outside Fort Washington (same time) with even splits of :26 flat for Shug, a bit green but never really being asked much through the lane, then galloped out a length or so behind workmate. Some ability noted but we’d prefer to see one first.

                              Taking Candy (August 14, Saratoga, 4f, :48.4bg). Grade: B-
Asked hard leaving the gate, then went without undue pressure while a tad second best outside Cagliostro (same time) for DeVaux, okay drill, not great. Brought $400,000 at the OBS March sale, where he previewed over the all-weather in 10 seconds flat; would not surprise us to see him perform better on grass than dirt.

                              SIXTH RACE:

                              Best Idea (August 13, Saratoga, 4f, :48.3b). Grade: B
Slightly best outside Causin’ Mayhem (same time) for T. Pletcher, light coaxing only and then galloping out well past the wire, final quarter in :24.4. New York-bred son of Honor Code maintains his edge.

                              SEVENTH RACE:

                              Expected Value (August 14, Saratoga, 5f, 1:01.2b). Grade: B-
Went under a nice hold outside Peak Popularity (same time) for C. Brown, slightly best at the wire before galloping out the stronger of the two, final quarter in :25.2 with plenty left. Hard to say how quick he is; juvenile son of Flatter may eventually prove to be most effective over a distance of ground.

Good News Rocket (August 7, Saratoga, 4f, :47.2b). Grade: B-
Ridden from the gate while even but slightly second best inside Lady Caraggio (same time) for W. Mott, both displaying decent speed throughout but being asked most of the way. Runhappy colt brought $700,000 at the Fasig-Tipton March sale, where he impressed previewing in 10 1/5 seconds but looked something less than that in this move.

Echo Again (August 7, Saratoga, 5f, 1:01b TT). Grade: B+
Smart drill by talented Gun Runner colt in S. Asmussen barn, breezing under a stout hold throughout while appearing slightly best over Favorite Outlaw (same time), final three furlongs on our watches in :37.3, plenty left late while just coasting home. Well-regarded, looks the part, and seems plenty fit. Could be the goods.

                              Spinzar (August 14, Saratoga, 4f :48.2bg). Grade: B+
In three-horse gate drill outside Self Confident (middle) and Pleasant Passage (inside) and was always going the easiest of the trio while under a nice hold early and never really asked much late. Tapit colt trained just okay prior to this drill but might be waking up. Intriguing for Shug.

Eminent Victor (August 5, Saratoga, 4f, :50.1b TT TC). Grade: B
Stride for stride inside Dolce Zel (same time) for C. Brown in training track turf drill inside the dogs, both looking sharp and happy. ‘Victor lost a toughie in the Lake George and should fire a similar shot in the Lake Placid; ‘Zel went quite nicely, too, after nosing out her stablemate in the Lake George.

Consumer Spending (August 14, Saratoga, 5f, 1:012b TT TC). Grade: B
Easy drill inside the dogs over turf training course for C. Brown while stride-for-stride with Haughty (same time), final quarter in :24.1, neither one asked, both finishing with plenty left. Couldn’t really separate them.

                              Sarah Harper (July 28, Saratoga, 4f, :50.1b . Grade: B+
Smooth as silk while breezing through the lane under a tight hold, looking quite sharp and eager for Moquett. Away since January but is returning in peak form, it would appear.

Caravel (August 14, Saratoga, 4f, :47.4b TT TC). Grade: B+
Solo training track turf breeze around dogs for B. Cox looking razor sharp while finishing under a tight hold, final quarter in :24.1. Had a rough trip when well-beaten as the favorite in the Caress S.-G3 last time out but certainly appears capable of bouncing back.

                              Gerrymander (August 13, Saratoga, 5f, 1:01b). Grade: B+
Under a stout hold every step of the way in solo breeze for C. Brown, final quarter in :24.2 before eagerly galloping out with plenty left. Won the Mother Goose S.-G2 convincingly and appears even better now than they. Warrants respect in the Alabama S.-G1, especially if she makes the lead without pressure.

                              Nest (August 5, Saratoga, 4f, :49.3b). Grade: B
Even but slightly second best outside Malathaat (same time), not really asked much while a neck behind most of the way (workmate under a hammerlock, looked terrific). May not be quite a sharp as she appeared prior to the CCA Oaks but she’s so good it may not matter. Just a very minor cause for concern.
