Major metropolitan meetings are today held at Randwick, Caulfield, Eagle Farm, Morphettville and Ascot.

RANDWICK: RACE 7 @ 4:10 PM

The $500,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes. WILLIAMSBURG (3) bounced right back to form when he savaged the line in the Listed Dulcify here last time out and the extra furlong looks to suit. Goes well for McEvoy who has three wins and two placings from just seven steers and the wide alley shouldn't pose a problem as he will be jagged back early. Should be right there at the business end. SHARP 'N' SMART (5) wasn't disgraced when a close-up fourth at Group 1 level before the spell and has since returned with a tune-up win at Ruakaka. Is yet to be tested on rain affected going but that shouldn't pose an issue being a Kiwi. Can go very close. PROMITTO (2) draws the inside alley and gets the services of Rawiller. Can improve enough to feature in the finish. MATCHA LATTE (6) is yet to put in a poor performance in five career outings and is a must for the multiples. The well-related STYLISED (16) best of the rest from the low draw.
SELECTIONS: Williamsburg to win.

CAULFIELD: RACE 4 @ 2:00 PM

ZETHUS (14) is going to be well fancied here, down at the bottom of the handicap off a big return win where he rounded up a handy one at the Valley and won going away. Always shown good talent and that return as a gelding says that he is going to put it all together now. Can win better races than this. PRINCE OF BOOM (3) has been a touch plain in his two Melbourne runs but he is a good horse when right and could be worth forgiving into this with the Queenslanders in general running hot. CURRAN (12) has a nice chance. Another strong effort here last time and think 1200m suits him better. GRAVINA (7) ran well in a deep race last time and that form will hold up at this level while SUPERIUM (8) is a nice chance at bigger odds with a handy fresh record and peak ratings that say he is capable.
SELECTIONS: Playing multiples in a race deep with chances.

EAGLE FARM: RACE 4 @ 1:28 PM

KOKORO (5) won twice from his first three starts after a spell then hit the line well for second at Warwick Farm last time. His best form has come at the mile and he looks nicely placed. GOLDEEL (8) is a progressive mare racing well. Hasn't missed a place at this distance and will be at peak fitness. Contender. DRIVE A DEEL (14) found winning form last start and steps up to a journey where he was successful in his only previous attempt. MAGIC CONQUEROR (4) improved to place last start and is an each way player reaching peak form while ALDERMAN (3) is worth a place in the exotics.
SELECTIONS: Kokoro brings good form from NSW. Backing to win.

MORPHETTVILLE: RACE 7 @ 3:32 PM

MANHATTEN TIMES (2) looks nicely placed after closing off strongly first up in a similar race. Generally goes well second up with 2 wins from 3 starts and rates highly off his last start. SIXBYSIXTYTHREE (4) is the main danger. He's racing well and led all the way in an easier race last start. Strong chance again. HIDDEN LEGEND (8) was a dominant winner two back over 1300m before an even effort in the Balaklava Cup. Back in trip suits and he'll be strong late. EXTRA MILE (10) wasn't suited behind Sixbysixtythree last time and would appreciate a likely stronger tempo. Good chance at a price.
SELECTIONS: Backing Manhatten Times and Extra Mile.

ASCOT: RACE 8 @ 4:20 PM

ADVANCED (6) is a nice type who's come back much stronger this time in. At his peak now fourth-up and motored late from near last when 3rd over 1600m at Belmont Park on September 14. This much easier and will have little trouble dropping back 200m. Hard to hold out. KARLI'S KARMA (4) has a good winning record and second-up today after scoring a solid win over 1200m at Belmont Park on September 17. Wide gate no help but win here this trip on February 23 rated very well. Big watch. SPEED DREAM (2) is racing in the best form of his career and down sharply in grade for this. Not that far away first-up when 5th over 1400m at Belmont Park on September 17. Goes well second-up and looks good value. BROOKLYN PIER (3) has been mixing his form and from the draw here can take a hand in the finish on best figures.

#2 War Like Goddess takes on the boy today; however, she still looks to be a bit better than this field. This will be a good test to see if she will take on the boys at the Breeders Cup. #7 Gufo has been solid lately and always is good for a nice closing kick down the lane. However, he does have trouble winning at times.

#1 Baltasar drops down to the claiming ranks today after taking on much tougher company in his last three starts. He nearly won a starter allowance race at Belmont Park three starts back. #3 Skylander moves back to the dirt today, while also taking a big drop in class, and running for a new barn.

Race 10: Allowance

#4 Shes a Mia should be tough in this spot if she rebounds from a poor effort last time out. She had hit the board in five straight starts before that poor performances. #1 New Ginya has run second at this level in two straight starts against similar runners.

Race 11: Maiden Claiming

#2 Jocosity drops down to the maiden claiming ranks for this race, which is one of the biggest drops in horse racing. Her speed figures look better than the rest of this field. #1 Oak Loves a Fight was close at this level in her last three starts. She should be competitive once again today.

Coolmore Turf Mile – Grade 1 | Purse $1 Million | One Mile on Turf | Three Year Olds and Upward


Analysis and top contenders:

Ivar (6) has been adeptly handled by trainer Paulo Lobo and may be able to duplicate the feat of winning this race in 2020, then at odds of 14 to 1. Prior to that Ivar (BRZ) had raced three times in his native Brazil, winning all three races impressively. After getting acclimated to U.S. racing and winning his second stateside start that June, he was rested two months and returned to finish third in the Tourist Mile Stakes at Kentucky Downs, then four weeks later won this race with a career best 122 Equibase Speed Figure which remains the best figure earned by any horse in this field in a North American race. After a fast finishing fourth behind Order of Australia in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, also run at Keeneland that year, Ivar was rested for six months, returning to finish fourth in this race last year in his second start off the layoff. Once again rested for many months, Ivar ran a lot better than one year earlier off the layoff, winning the John B. Schuster Memorial Stakes in July. Given a short rest similar to 2020, Ivar made his next start at this level in the Woodbine Mile Stakes and although no match for five length winner Modern Games, he rallied from 10th in the early stages to get second by a neck. That effort earned him a 113 figure setting him up to repeat his win two years ago this week.

Casa Creed (9) finished fourth behind Ivar in the 2020 edition of this race, then was 12th of 14 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile that year. Returning in January of last year, Casa Creed ran the best race of his career when winning the Tropical Turf Mile with a 117 Equibase Speed Figure, then three races later won the Jaipur Stakes, earning his first grade one stakes win. That form was short lived as he lost three in a row including when eighth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile, in which Ivar finished third. This year has been a different story, particularly his two most recent races. In June Casa Creed repeated as the winner of the Jaipur with a 105 figure, then two months later won the Fourstardave Handicap, earning a 112 figure in the process. Now on a pattern for another improvement in form and figure, Casa Creed could have a big say in the outcome of this race.

Set Piece (12) appears to be another top miler who is improving and who can do well in this situation. He proved that when closing from last of six to win the Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup Stakes last month with a 112 figure, the same as he earned winning the Wise Dan Stake in June of last year. Set Piece has experience over the course, having been beaten just two lengths this past April in the Maker’s Mark Mile, the spring equivalent of this race. That effort came following seven months off and I’m pretty sure trainer Brad Cox had wished for a race under the horse’s belt before that. Now with four races since then including two wins in graded stakes on turf, Set Piece has a similar potential to Ivar (BRZ) to be closing fastest of all in the stretch and win this year’s Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes.

Notes about three others who are contenders but may be ever so slightly a cut below the three above – Santin (7) is two for two at this mile turf trip and four for eight in his career. The wins at a mile came two years ago but one of them was at Keeneland and that’s a positive factor. He enters the race off a 113 figure effort winning the Arlington Million and two races before that won the Turf Classic Stakes on Kentucky Derby Day with a 115 figure which, if repeated, would be competitive against the top choices.

Order of Australia (3) is attempting to use this race as a prep to become one of few horses to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile more than once. When winning that race at odds of 73 to 1 in 2020, he was making his first start in the U.S. and coming off a ninth place finish in Ireland. Then when attempting a similar feat to this year in 2021, Order of Australia finished 12th and last in the Keeneland Turf Mile then went back to Europe instead of competing in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Similar to last year, Order of Australia enters the race off a runner-up effort in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, with a very strong 122 figure, but it remains to be seen if he will run as well as he did in 2020 or as poorly as he did last year.

As to Smooth Like Strait (2), the best description is he shows up with his “A” game every time. However, his “A” game hasn’t been good enough to win at this level in his last seven races, all in grade one or grade two company. He has finished second in six of those seven races, and third in the other, which happens to have been the Maker’s Mark Mile this past spring, where Smooth Like Strait led from the start and for the first six furlongs, then battled head and head for the last quarter mile before losing by a neck and a nose. He ran just as well in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile five months earlier, leading from the start and coming up a half-length short at the wire to be second with a career-best 119 figure. Likely to be on the lead early but battling with Somelikeithotbrown (10), who has the same running style, Smooth Like Strait will likely fight hard to the wire as always, but just like in his last seven races, he could give just enough ground to other horses in the final strides to come up short.

Royal Randwick is the destination for metropolitan racing in New South Wales this Saturday with a massive 10-race program scheduled for Silver Eagle Day. There is plenty of doubt surrounding the meeting going ahead, with the track currently rated a Heavy 10 and more rain forecast in the days leading up. It will almost certainly be a day for mudlarks, and with the rail out 8m from the 1000m to the winning post and out 4m for the remainder, it will be a battle of the fittest. The first race is set to jump at 12:35pm AEDT.

Race 1: Highway Class 3 Handicap (1600m)

We kick off the day of racing with the weekly running of the Highway and considering the bottomless track we will be racing on, it is hard to go past Gold Lunar. The Rodney Northam-trained mare relishes Heavy going as she has shown at her last three starts, winning twice on a Heavy 10 at Tamworth and Scone, with a narrow defeat at Dubbo on a similar surface in-between those wins. From barrier nine, we are hoping Reece Jones can have this girl in the three wide line with cover and if he is lucky enough to do so, she looks the one who will handle the conditions the best. At $20 with some online betting sites, Gold Lunar looks the perfect way to start the day at any old price.

Put a line through the Anthony Cummings-trained Kote efforts at Rosehill on September 24 where he simply saw no daylight throughout the home straight. Prior to that effort, he absolutely bolted in on a Heavy 8 at Canterbury when leading throughout and kicking clear in a dominant performance. From barrier four and with just 54kg on his back, look for Tommy Berry to take up the running aboard this Choisir gelding. As long as he handles the bottomless track on Saturday, Kote should just simply be running away with the Midway.

Race 3: BM78 Handicap (2000m)

The way King Frankel dominated his rivals at Newcastle on September 24 on a Heavy 8 suggests he will be one of the better bets of the day on Saturday. The four-year-old gelding was having his first start on these shores over 1850m and looked to relish the wet ground and every bit of the 1850m. This son of Frankel settled towards the rear of the field on that occasion and despite being the widest runner upon straightening, he gave his rivals a start and a convincing beating to suggest he was one to follow through the grades. Tyler Schiller hops on board claiming 1.5kg, a 4.5kg weight drop as he makes his city debut and if Schiller has this bloke in clear air approaching the home turn, King Frankel looks to have a fair bit of untapped ability about and looks the goods in this BM78.

We had tipped Best Of Bordeaux on top in the Listed Heritage Stakes on September 24 but was ultimately scratched and saved for another day. He looked hard to beat on that day and looks just as hard to go past in Saturday’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes. He was last seen finishing second behind subsequent Golden Rose Stakes runner-up In Secret in the Run To The Rose on September 10 and despite being four weeks between runs, he looks to have a bit of class on his side over most of his rivals. He will be roaring along out in front under the careful hands of Ben Melham and having shown he can handle wet ground, he should be leading throughout and proving too hard to gun down. The $2.90 on offer with Ladbrokes looks to be a perfect price for Best Of Bordeaux.

The Mark Newnham-trained Expat gets conditions to suit her down to the ground on Saturday and looks awfully hard to go past in the Group 3 The Nivison. The five-year-old mare has three wins from three third-up runs and has tasted success four times on Heavy going from only six attempts. She will be bounding along out in front under Tom Sherry and having won the Group 2 Millie Fox earlier in the year, we know she is more than capable at this level. She looks to gain an uncontested lead out in front and if Sherry can find a cheap sectional or two, Expat has shown she can keep up a strong gallop over six furlongs and looks hard to gun down.

Race 6: Tapp-Craig (1400m)

Having finished second in the Listed Heritage Stakes last time out, the Luke Pepper-trained Opal Ridge looks the one who will get the better of Golden Rose Stakes placegetter Zou Tiger in the Tapp-Craig. The three-year-old filly has progressed nicely this campaign and despite this being one of the tougher races she’s contested, she looks the good in the conditions. Zou Tiger is questionable on a Heavy 10 according to trainer John O’Shea, but as Opal Ridge showed two starts back in her Hiighway win over 1200m, she is more than capable on tough ground. She draws to gain every favour in the run and in what looks to be a tune-up run for The Kosciuszko next weekend, we expect Opal Ridge will prove too hard to hold out.

Race 7: Gloaming Stakes (1800m)

The Group 3 Gloaming Stakes kicks off the quaddie at Randwick on Saturday afternoon and is the perfect lead-up event for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes. At the price, we are hoping the Mark Newnham-trained Matcha Latte looks to present great value having been the best of the beaten brigade behind Caulfield Guineas favourite Golden Mile in the Ming Dynasty Quality. The three-year-old Maurice colt looks like he will appreciate the step up to 1800m based on the way he finished off over 1400m. From barrier 19, Tom Sherry will need to be aggressive early to lob him up on speed with cover and if he is lucky enough to do so, Matcha Latte has shown in the past he can handle any conditions. As long as he does not get trapped wide, we expect Matcha Latte to be fighting out the finish and at $19 with Neds, looks to be a great each-way play.

Race 8: Silver Eagle (1300m)

Finish in the top three in Saturday’s Silver Eagle and you automatically qualify to run in the Golden Eagle on October 29. That is what is on offer for the 14 four-year-old’s who are set to compete over 1300m for the $1 million on offer. Heading the market is last start Theo Marks Stakes runner-up Mr Mozart ($3.70), whilst Waterford ($7.50), Startantes ($8), Espiona ($8.50) and Vilana ($9.50) are all given a chance in Saturday’s feature.

Race 9: Angst Stakes (1600m)

The Group 3 Angst Stakes looks to be a wide-open affair and at the price on the minimum weight, we are happy to give a push to the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Narrated. The five-year-old mare boasts a near bombproof Heavy track record of 6: 3-2-1 and considering she will be up on speed throughout; she looks hard to knock at a big price. She wasn’t beaten all that far on firmer going over 1400m at Rosehill and looks perfectly placed by the stable with the amount of rain Randwick has received. The Snitzel mare looks set to gain a virtually uncontested lead underneath Andrew Adkins and with a couple of quiet sectionals, it is hard to see how her rivals gun her down. The $16 with online Bookmakers is simply the wrong price.

Race 10: BM78 Handicap (1000m)

Phil Sweeney sends Neverstandingstill to the Randwick 1000m and considering she is an out and out mudlark, she looks a great bet in the last. Having bolted in at Bendigo on consecutive occasions on a Heavy 8 and Heavy 9 respectively, the Starcraft mare backed up those efforts with a smart win at Sandown on September 14 on firmer deck to show her versatility. Brett Prebble will look to have her settled in the one-one or outside the leader from barrier 12 and with the love for bottomless tracks, we are more than happy to side with Neverstandingstill in the final event of the day.

Saturday metropolitan racing in Brisbane returns to Eagle Farm today with a massive 10-race card, highlighted by the Queensland Cup for the stayers over 2400m. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with only a small amount of rain around in the forecast, we should be on a very fair track on raceday. Queensland Cup Top Tip: Barade

The Listed $150,000 Queensland Cup over 2400m will be run and won as the feature event on the program at Eagle Farm, where the Jack Bruce-trained Barade will be our top tip. This seven-year-old gelding has been up since April, where he has had nine starts recording two wins and two thirds. Since being transferred from Archie Alexander to Jack Bruce this son of Havana Gold has won over 2000m and 2200m whilst he has been placed at his last two runs over 2200m, showing at both runs that he is ready for the step up to 2400m. This guy ran third behind Seat Of Power last start, who will also run in the Cup today, but Barade meets him 3.5kg better at the weights, which will give our guy a big advantage at the end of 2400m.

Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Hakkai Maru

Our best bet on the program will be the Louise White-trained Hakkai Maru in race seven over 1200m. This lightly raced four-year-old mare has put together a very impressive career record winning three of her first five starts. This daughter of Maurice won very impressively last start at Ipswich over 1200m, where she jumped, lead and kicked away on the turn to record a very nice two length victory. Since her win and last run, three of the horses she beat at Ipswich have come out and won, proving the race to be a great form reference. This will be Michael Cahill’s second ride on this mare, so hopefully he can have her rolling out in front in a rhythm, to kick on the bend repeating the dose here and continue winning.

We were with the Tony & Maddysen Sears-trained Goldeel at her last start, where she was a drifting favourite who got trapped three wide the whole way and still boxed on for third over 1625m at Toowoomba on September 24. This four-year-old mare has dropped back from BM80 grade to race in a BM70 race that sets up much better for her. With the aid of Angela Jones’ 3kg claim, this daughter of Dundeel will only carry 55kg meaning she gets into this race very light, making her very tough to beat. From barrier six, Jones will be able to push forward again and lob in the one-one and go very close to winning once again.

The Jason Dreamer-trained Awesome Lad will be our best value bet of the day, as this gelding has been working up to a win over his last two starts, finishing second and third over 1400m at Eagle Farm and the Sunshine Coast. This son of I Am Invincible was scratched from a race at the Sunshine Coast due to a heavy track and saved for this run today. We are hoping that Jason Dreamer has made the correct decision and this guy will be primed for a win here at a nice price of $8.50 with online Bookmakers.
