Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Minnesota -6


I love the spot for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They are coming off their first loss of the season and off a bye week. They will be coming back rested and ready to go with a chip on their shoulder after getting upset by Purdue at home last time out.
I think the Gophers took the Boilermakers lightly because Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell wasn't expected to play and was a game-time decision. He played and we've seen how good Purdue has been with him in there. They won't be making the same mistake against Illinois, who also have their starting QB Tommy DeVito questionable for this game.


DeVito suffered a high ankle sprain against Iowa last week. Illinois was lost without him as backup Arthur Sitkowski is a big downgrade. He went 13-of-19 passing for 74 yards with an interception against the Hawkeyes, averaging just 3.9 yards per attempt. DeVito will likely miss this game, but if he plays he won't be anywhere near 100%. He's no O'Connell either way.


It's a great time to 'sell high' on the Fighting Illini after a 5-1 start this season, including back-to-back wins over Wisconsin and Iowa, who were the two favorites to win this division. But I believe Minnesota is the best team in the division, and that will prove to be the case Saturday. If the Fighting Illini were fully healthy this would be a competitive game.


But that's not the case as DeVito isn't their only injury concern. Several starters left the game against Iowa with injuries. That includes WR Isaiah Williams, DB Taz Nicholson and LB Isaac Darkangelo. While none of the injuries appear to be season-ending, head coach Bret Bielema may elect to rest these guys this week knowing that they have a bye on deck next week.


"The majority of all those guys should be back in time for Nebraska," Bielema said Monday. "But I don't know how realistic it is for any of those four or five guys to be projected into being in this week's plan." DeVito has thrown for 1,163 yards with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions this season.


Minnesota RB Mohamed Ibrahim is the heart and soul of this Minnesota team. He had rushed for 567 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 6.4 per carry prior to missing the Purdue game. Well, Ibrahim is back this week and should be at full strength after having basically three weeks off due to the bye. It will be tough sledding for this Illinois offense against a Minnesota defense that allows just 8.8 points per game and 222.0 yards per game.


Illinois is 1-13 ATS in its last 14 home games with a total of 42 or fewer points. The Golden Gophers are 31-15-5 ATS in their last 51 road games. Minnesota is 15-5-1 ATS in its last 21 games overall. The Gophers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games vs. a team with a winning record. Minnesota is 6-2 ATS in its last eight meetings at Illinois. Bet Minnesota Saturday.

Saturday's Free NCAAF Pick is on the Wisconsin Badgers as a 7.5-point road favorite against the Michigan State Spartans. I don't see Wisconsin having any problem winning here by double-digits. The Badgers responded in a big way to their head coach getting fired, as they came out and destroyed Northwestern 42-7 on the road last week. It isn't going to be that easy against the Spartans, but this is not a very good Michigan State team. The Spartans have gone 0-4 SU and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as the books just continue to price this team too much on what they did last year. The offense isn't producing without Kenneth Walker in the backfield and the defense hasn't shown they stop the run or the pass. In Michigan State's last 3 games they have allowed an average of 36.7 ppg, 537 ypg and 7.2 yards/play. Bet the Badgers -7.5!

The Key: Kent State has played the 26th-toughest schedule in the country this year. Toledo has played the 135th-toughest. That difference in strength of schedule has the Golden Flashes catching more points than they should be against Toledo this week. They played Washington, Oklahoma and Georgia all on the road in the non-conference. They held their own against all 3 teams, especially Georgia in a 22-39 loss as 45-point underdogs. They only beat Ohio 31-24 in their MAC opener despite out gaining the Bobcats by 286 yards. Last week they lost to Miami Ohio 27-24 and were even in yardage. That loss coupled with Toledo's misleading 52-32 win at NIU last week has the Golden Flashes catching too many points here. Toledo was actually outgained by 75 yards by NIU last week and scored 52 points on only 349 total yards. It was very fluky. The Golden Flashes are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games off an ATS loss. Take Kent State.
