Belmont at the Big A Horses in Focus for Friday, October 28

RACE 1: GOING IN STYLE (#5)

I’m not trying to beat possible favorite Going in Style (#5) in this opener. This gelding showed some promise on debut when running on mildly for fourth over a much shorter trip at Monmouth. He was a little green that day but galloped out well, looking like one that would appreciate the added distance in his next start. He then showed surprising early speed on the stretch-out, which caused him to tire late after chasing the superior winner through some quick early fractions. Forbidden Secret returned to win at Keeneland with a 103 TimeformUS Speed Figure – a 12-point improvement – and the runner-up came back to improve his Beyer by 18 points. He now takes the blinkers off, which may help him settle better in the early going. He’s bred to go this far and gets appropriate class relief dropping in for a tag. I would primarily use him with the other horse out of that Sep. 18 race. Outlaw Country (#3) was a little green racing in behind the leaders early, losing position along the rail at the break for the turn. He ultimately stayed on mildly while never really threatening for a placing. Yet he could show more speed this time and does have room to improve. Another horse who could be more forwardly placed here is Uncle Dan (#8). He’s finished far back in both starts, but showed some signs of life on turf last time, getting rank after a poor start. I’m not sure he wants to go this far, but he will appreciate the class relief as he gets back on dirt.

RACE 4: LASHARA (#4)

I suppose Oakhurst (#2) could go favored, assume she runs here instead of at Keeneland, where she’s cross-entered. However, I haven’t been thrilled with her form since she won so impressively in Kentucky earlier in the year. She got a great trip and had no excuse not to get past Eminent Victor in the Wild Applause, and then she was no factor in two subsequent stakes tries. She’s getting some class relief as she goes out for Michelle Nevin this time, but has to do better. Among the likely short prices, I prefer Silvestri (#3), who made her North American debut at Woodbine earlier this month for Christophe Clement. She always traveled like a winner that day, ranging up confidently before displaying a nice turn of foot to spurt away from that field. She’s stretching out around two turns here, but she had no troubles handling a mile in France last year. I believe she’s the horse to beat. My top pick is Lashara (#4). Her form looks pretty inconsistent at first glance, but I can easily make excuses for some of her poor efforts. She ran well first time out for the Mike Maker barn back in July when she made a wide move to just miss behind subsequent graded stakes winner Evvie Jets. I don’t care about her dirt race, and last time she didn’t get the best trip at Kentucky Downs. Irad Ortiz tried to angle her wide coming off the far turn, but engaged in bumping match with a foe before she flattened out. I think she’s better than that and can rebound stretching back out to a mile.

RACE 8: LIFELOVENLAUGHTER (#4)

Likely favorite Tax Implications (#1) will obviously be tough to beat if she improves at all on her debut at Monmouth. She got a great trip, but displayed a strong turn of foot when she was produced into the clear in upper stretch. When horses draw off to win turf races by nearly 7 lengths, it’s usually an indictment of the competition. Yet this filly actually beat two horses who both came back to run well in their next starts. Runner-up Liguria returned to win a race on this circuit, and the third-place finisher just missed in her next start at Delaware Park. I’m just slightly concerned that she could get overbet with all of the obvious signs pointing to her. Chad Brown is 6 for 17 (35%, $1.53 ROI) with 2-year-old last-out debut winner in turf routes over 5 years, but the mediocre ROI highlights the short prices of most runners in this sample. There are some interesting alternatives if looking elsewhere. I’m not inclined to take the other Chad Brown trainee Implicated (#2), who beat a weak field last time. However, the two fillies drawn to her outside both offer some appeal at better prices. The Classy One (#3) is certainly bred to move up on turf as a full-sister to turf stakes winner Valedictorian, who also raced for Kelly Breen. Yet I’m going to another shipper, Lifelovenlaughter (#4), as my top pick. Mike Trombetta is an underrated trainer who can ship some live runners to the NYRA circuit. He’s 10 for 64 (16%, $3.33 ROI) in stakes at NYRA over the past 5 years. This filly hasn’t run particularly fast yet, but I thought she closed well in her debut after extricating herself from some traffic. She obviously handled the stretch-out last time when always appearing to have more to give when her rider asked for it. I think there’s still upside here and she figures to be a square price.

#1 Tax Implications goes for two straight victories to kick off her career today after an impressive maiden special weight win at Monmouth Park in her debut effort. #2 Implicated also looks for two straight victories after a nice win over this track last time out against maiden special weight runners.

Race 9: Maiden Special Weight

#10 Deccan Prince improved in his last start over this track and should improve some more with his second straight race over this surface. #1 Wico has finished third in three straight starts so far in his career. He has been up against some tougher runners in those races.

Friday night racing continues on for another week at Moonee Valley, as they host a competitive nine-race program this Friday. The track is currently rated as a Soft 5 and with some rain on the forecast over the next couple of days, we may not get to out of the Soft range on race-day. The rail will be in the 4m position for the entire circuit when racing kicks off at 5:15pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Elite Icon

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Elite Icon will resume in the 55 second challenge for the speedsters over 955m and we think that he will be very hard to beat first-up after a recording two wins and two seconds in his first career preparation. Before going out for a spell, this son of Nicconi won a Benchmark 64 over 1200m at this track back on March 4, leading all the way as a short priced favourite with the top online Bookmakers. This gelding has never finished outside of the top two in his first four career starts and we don’t expect this race to be any different as he comes to this race as the class galloper with plenty of upside. If he jumps from barrier eight and John Allen can get this guy to cross the field and lead, he will be extremely hard to get past in the concluding stages.

This son of Zoustar was very impressive at his most recent starts at Ballarat where he won by over three lengths in both of his wins over 1100m on September 16 and 30. Now stepping up to 1200m on a track that is favourable to leaders, this race is a very suitable one for this talented galloper. If this guy can cross the field and find the lead on his own, he will be very strong at the end of 1200m.

The Peter Moody-trained Powerful Eagle will take his place in the Class 1 Handicap over 1500m. This colt is coming off of a very good performance behind Zoe’s Promise in a Benchmark 70 over 1600m last start at Caulfield on October 12. Since that last run, Zoe’s Promise has won the Group 2 Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley on Saturday, proving that the form out of that Benchmark 70 race at Caulfield is a very good form reference. This son of Ribchester has also run third to Berkeley Square by just under two lengths, who also won last Saturday in the Moonee Valley Vase and will line up in the VRC Derby this Saturday at Flemington. If this guy can emulate his form from these two starts, he will be very hard to beat over 1500m dropping back in grade.

We head to southern NSW at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club for an eight-race card in Wagga Wagga. The rail sits in the true position for this card, and with a Heavy 10 listed for race-day, plus some rain around the Riverina, we expected to stay around that range comes Friday afternoon. The first race is scheduled for 1:35pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Atmospheric Rock

Atmospheric Rock looks ready to break his maiden status on Friday afternoon. The gelding by Your Song was unlucky to be beaten on debut on July 1 at Moruya by 0.5 lengths, as he was flying home late but was just snagged on the post by Sister Moon. This race looks a much easier task for this lightly raced three-year-old, and he should only improve based on his trial at Goulburn on October 4. He hit the line well, giving indications he has only come back stronger. Nick Heywood rode Atmospheric Rock in the trial, and provided the horse brings this form to race-day, he looks very hard to beat in a race full of untested gallopers.

With a track record of three starts, one win and two minor placings, this mare by The Factor will be looking to make it win number seven on 24 career starts. She has a class edge on her rivals, not to mention the 2kg claim for apprentice jockey Molly Bourke, and with the box seat in running, Shores Of Avalon looks a great price with online Bookmakers.

Irish Dancer has been luckless in her pursuit to add win number two to the board in her career. This mare by Shamus Award is fifth-up this preparation and has been screaming out for the mile after an outstanding effort last time at 1400m at Wagga Wagga on October 19. She was beaten only 1.3 lengths that day and hit the line strong to suggest the mile would be more than suitable for her. With a fitness edge and a great each-way price, we just had to make Irish Dancer a play in what looks only a moderate BM50. Quayde Krogh takes the ride here, and from gate two he’ll likely be positive and get on the back of leaders before pulling the whip and getting home late to be in the finish.
