Neil Morrice best bets and tips – Thursday 3 November 2022

Neil Morrice shares all of their best bets and tips for Thursday’s racing coming your way from Chelmsford, Ludlow, Newbury and Sedgefield on 3 November 2022.

              CHELMSFORD CITY
Race 3 No4 HIGHER LAW (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: Jim Crowley

HIGHER LAW put in a solid earning run on his introduction at Kempton and has been made fitter and stronger for that a month ago. He breaks from the rail and should be able to dominate proceedings against penalised OJ Lifestyle.
              Race 9 No4 BARENBOIM
Trainer: David O’Meara – Jockey: Jason Watson

BARENBOIM returned from a breathing operation to hack up at Newcastle when sporting a first-time hood. The Golden Horn gelding has got his act together in a big way, and has a great chance of following up under a 5lb penalty.
              LUDLOW
Race 4 No1 ITSO FURY (Nap)
Trainer: Jonjo O’Neill – Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr

ITSO FURY should be too speedy for Snipe in this stayers’ introductory hurdle in which there’s unlikely to be any pace. The penalised Nap came home unchallenged on his debut over jumps and should show no mercy to his foes on the way to better things.
Race 6 No11 BLENKINSOP (Each Way)
Trainer: Henry Daly – Jockey: Miss A Stevens

Although letting his supporters down when only fourth here in May, BLENKINSOP has strengthened through the summer and autumn and is the type that can offer more now in handicaps. He stays well and will handle cut in the ground.
              NEWBURY
              Race 3 No2 GIT MAKER
Trainer: Jamie Snowden – Jockey: Gavin Sheehan

The dry conditions make for smaller fields than usual at the first Newbury jumps fixture of the season. GIT MAKER faces only five rivals on his first start for over 200 days, but hails from a yard whose novices are running out of their skins. He can add to his four successes from last season and looks a horse to follow.
              Race 4 No1 CAROLE’S PASS (Nap)
Trainer: Amy Murphy – Jockey: Jack Quinlan

Hailing from a good old-fashioned chasing family, CAROLE’S PASS can successfully give away weight to three previous winners in this mares’ novices hurdle. The daughter of Authorised came home unchallenged when last seen at Clairefontaine in the summer, and though facing a willing foe in She’s A Saint can end the winning spree of the likely favourite.
              Race 6 No5 JAVA POINT
Trainer: Tom George – Jockey: Jonathan Burke

JAVA POINT hardly looked back when joining this yard, posting three handicap chase triumphs and finishing placed in two more from only six outings. This progressive individual could easily have a lot more to offer and is one to follow.
              SEDGEFIELD
              Race 5 No2 THERMUSA (Nap)
Trainer: Ruth Jefferson – Jockey: Brian Hughes

THERMUSA was backed into odds-on and hacked up on her first run under Rules in a novice hurdle here. Having also landed an Irish point on her only start in that arena, she’s a mare with boundless scope for progression and will be very hard to beat.
              Race 6 No1 MASKED CRUSADER
Trainer: Donald McCain Jnr – Jockey: Brian Hughes

MASKED CRUSADER delivered in all but one of his three outings last season and was especially impressive in beating Parisencore, who has substantially boosted the form. The grey went onto the sidelines but is as fit as he needs to be to pick up the winning thread on his seasonal return.

                  Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 3rd November 2022

                  by Racing and Sports

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for November 3.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Hawkesbury, Sapphire Coast, Flemington and Ipswich.

                  HAWKESBURY: RACE 4 @ 2:50 PM

ENJOLRAS (6) finished strongly last start at Randwick and was unlucky not to finish in the placings, beaten just over a length in fifth. Extra 300m looks perfect and is drawn to settle closer to the action. Leading hope. BAK DA MAN (2) let down nicely to score here at the latest. Rise in trip looks to suit and winning rider W Pike stays on. Sure to threaten. TRAVELLING KATE (1) has built in her campaign strongly with three solid runs. Has to carry slightly more weight stepping out over this trip but a peak performance is expected. ROSIE IMPACT (8) has improved with each run in and gets in 5kgs lighter this tougher assignment. Could find herself in the finish.
                  SELECTIONS: Enjolras gets the nod.

                  SAPPHIRE COAST: RACE 6 @ 5:15 PM

SHAKA ROCK (1) couldn't go with the smart winner last time out at Canberra, but that was in much tougher company than this. He's back in grade today and back to a track where he's had success previously. The 4kg claim helps and he'll take plenty of catching. ALMOST PERSUADED (2) scratched from an earlier race to line up in this event. She bolted in at Goulburn most recently, wining by 3.4L in this grade. She too has a 2kg claim on her back and she would just have to repeat her latest effort to be winning. HOPE UNO (10) broke her maiden two back but couldn't repeat the dose in a good race at Goulburn just 4 days ago. Jess Taylor hopping on is a positive sign for this stable. Going well and another good run is expected. MOOKAREENA (3) has a solid record first-up and gets in nicely after the 4kg claim. Worth keeping safe from a good alley. BIG STEVE (7) has been closing off races well and if they go too hard up front, he'll be flashing late.
                  SELECTIONS: Shaka Rock on top.

                  FLEMINGTON: RACE 6 @ 3:50 PM

ZOUSTYLE (3) has had a terrific spring, running three big races against top competition, and he finds himself handed a lovely chance to get some reward for effort now. Drops a couple of notches in grade and while there are still talented rivals in his way he can be considered the one they have to beat. JOYFUL FORTUNE (5) went like a rocket down the straight here first up from Hong Kong and earned a shot at the Everest on the back of that. It proved too much but like Zoustyle he looks well placed back in calmer waters now. ATHELRIC (4) also eases in grade having been found out by the better sprinters of late. ASHFORD STREET (8) continues to turn up and race well.
                  SELECTIONS: Zoustyle gets his chance.

                  IPSWICH: RACE 6 @ 4:03 PM

STEINBRENNER (1) ran on strongly to miss by a nose when first up at Warwick over 1200m. Was in fine form last campaign winning three of his last four starts before the spell. Proven second up and is a leading contender up in trip. BIGGIE (5) is working towards a win and ran a good race last start to finish a close third over 1400m at Gatton. Major player. EYE SHOOT TO WIN (6) was a winner at Toowoomba three back and just missed at the same track last start. Down in the weights for this. One to consider. HAIL TO THE CHIEF (3) has a consistent record at this distance and is well drawn.
SELECTIONS: Steinbrenner to atone for a narrow fresh defeat.

Horse Racing picks for Delaware Park race track on Thursday, November 3: These are Confirmed Genius picks

                      2:30 pm Delaware Park (Race 5) – Mr. Walsh 3/1 (2-star play)

Race 5 at Delaware Park is a 5-furlong Claiming event on the dirt surface in which the Lawrence Smith trained Mr. Walsh can have a big say, as he is a 2-time winner in this grade and has been freshened up nicely since a lay off. At 4 years of age this gelding is the youngest (tied) horse in this field, so there could be room for further improvement and there’s no doubt he has the ability to win this.
                      3:00 pm Delaware Park (Race 6) – Confirmed Genius 9/2 (1-star play)

A field of seven fillies and mares who have not won since September 3rd go to post for this $26,000 Claimer and I like the filly in stall 5, Confirmed Genius, who was a convincing 3 and a quarter length winner at this level at Penn National last time out. This daughter of Weigelia, who himself was a stakes winner at this course, has won at a higher level and comes into this off the back of that comfortable win last time so it would not surprise should she back that up here.
                      3:30 pm Delaware Park (Race 7) – Vikram 10/1 (1-star play)

The penultimate contest at Delaware Park is a competitive $42,000 Allowance contest over a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt and one who can go well is one of the outsiders in this field, Vikram, who has only raced 9 times thus far and won his maiden over a mile at this course. He has finished down the field in hotter contests on his last 3 starts, so he will appreciate this easier task and I do feel that there is more to come as he is lightly-raced and recorded 2 good victories in Claiming company this Summer.
                      4:00 pm Delaware Park (Race 8) – Committed 8/5 (2-star play)

Bonnie Lucas’s Committed is likely to be a warm order in the finale at Delaware Park, but it’s clear to see why and he is the selection in this weak Maiden Claimer over the mile trip. He is a 15-race maiden but has been knocking on the door this season with form figures of 323 in June and July, and if you look back at some of his defeats the horses that have beaten him have gone on to do quite well and this looks an ideal opportunity to break his maiden under John Hiraldo.
                      Exotic
                      Late Pick 4

                      Race 5: 3, 6
                      Race 6: 4, 5
                      Race 7: 2, 4, 7
                      Race 8: 1, 5, 7

                      $0.50 Late Pick 4, cost $18

The Melbourne Cup Carnival continues when the fillies take centre stage for VRC Oaks Day on Thursday afternoon. The Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) is the feature event on a competitive nine-race card littered with black-type events. Following Melbourne Cup Day, the track has come up a Soft 7, with the rail coming out 5m for the entire circuit. Ladies Day at Flemington is set to get underway at 12:40pm AEDT.

                        Race 1: 3&4YO Fillies & Mares BM70 (1700m)

Opening races do not come much harder than this BM70 for fillies and mares to kick off Oaks Day. With the blinkers going on for the first time, we are hoping Tahlequah can find her way back to the winner’s stall. The Tarzino mare has been hitting the line with great intent on the Pakenham synthetic over 1600m and with the step up to 1700m, she comes right into calculations in a race like this. She was placed on rain-affected ground on debut, so we know she will handle conditions and in what looks to be a race where we can find some value, Tahlequah at a $10 quote looks the best way to kick off Oaks Day.

                        Selections:

                        silks12
                        TAHLEQUAH

                        MATRON BULLWINKEL

                        Palmerbet
                        silks1
                        ARKTIKA

                        Betfair
                        silks14
                        CABACCA

                        Neds

                        Race 2: Ottawa Stakes (1000m)

Having produced the best last 600m on debut, we’re hoping with natural improvement and better racing matters second-up that Charm Stone can take out the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes. With nine of the 16 two-year-old fillies on debut, we expect the Flemington straight raceday experience this I Am Invincible filly brings can be a slight advantage to have her winning the Group 3 event. She did plenty wrong when beaten 1.5-lengths to Zulfiqar in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, but the way she hit the line suggested she was one to follow. From barrier 12, Damian Lane should be able to have her settled with cover throughout and when asked for an effort, Charm Stone looks to have a nice turn of foot and looks a nice play early on.

                        Race 3: Inglis Bracelet (1600m)

Our best bet of the day comes up in the Inglis Bracelet worth a cool $250,000 where the Chris Waller-trained Roots looks a clear best of the day at Flemington. The four-year-old mare was sensational when racing in the worst part of the track at Moonee Valley in the Group 3 Tesio Stakes. She was beaten by a long neck to My Whisper on that day and considering this is much easier than that day, she looks hard to go past. James McDonald hops on board, which is an added bonus, considering JMac has partnered the Press Statement mare to three wins from their four starts as a combination. With Ancient Girl set to make this a genuinely run 1600m affair, the race looks perfectly set up for Roots to build through her gears and as she has continually shown on rain-affected tracks, she has a turn of foot that most of these cannot match.

                        Race 4: Desirable Stakes (1400m)

With a bit of luck Roots has saluted and we can have a nice each-way play on the Patrick Payne-trained Birdies Galore in the Listed Desirable Stakes. The three-year-old filly was not beaten far first-up in the William Crockett Stakes behind Wee Nessy over 1200m, we expect the step up to 1400m second-up will be the tonic for success. She has already placed at the trip and considering she has not finish worse than third in her career and that she is proven on wet ground, the Spieth filly looks hard to beat. From barrier 14, we expect Michael Dee will have this girl settled close to the speed throughout and as long as the pair does not get trapped wide, Birdies Galore will be in this for a long way. At $14 with online betting sites, she looks to be one the market has forgotten about in the Desirable Stakes.

Saint Bathans was an impressive winner last time out at Caulfield on October 15 and considering he has three wins from three starts on Heavy ground, he looks one of the better bets of the day on Thursday. The Andrew Forsman-trained son of Maurice finished half a length off Just Folk two starts back in the Seymour Cup and based on his last start win suggests he is going to take some beating in this. From barrier 12, Dean Holland will need a touch of luck early on to not get trapped three wide, but with proven wet track form and terrific form this campaign, Saint Bethans looks to have a field that is stacked with perennial non-winners covered.

Joyful Fortune found the going a bit too tough in The Everest last time out, but based on his first-up win over 1100m on a bottomless Heavy 10 here at Flemington, he looks the one they have to catch in the Century Stakes. The Mark Newnham-trained sprinter looks to have plenty of untapped potential and considering he looks to be the leader on paper, he looks a clear on top selection. As long as he handles the 1100m sprint against a decent field, we expect Joyful Fortune will prove too hard to gun down in the opening leg of the quaddie.

                        Race 7: MCC Final (1600m)

The now annual Melbourne Cup Country Final looks to be a genuine dartboard job and is reflected by the fact we are taking the field in the quaddie. Our dart has landed on the Nathan Dunn-trained Corona Lad who was bloused in a similar contest at Caulfield on October 12 and considering the track was a Heavy 9 that day, we know he will handle what is in front of him on Thursday. Blake Shinn is in strong form and sticks on board and if he can have this bloke settled in the moving line with cover, he has a nice turn of foot and with a more than serviceable wet track record, Corona Lad looks the one to side with in the MCC Final despite it being an open affair.

The Group 1 VRC Oaks has been taken out by some of the greats of the turf such as Jameka, Miss Finland and Surround. A field of 11 fillies will be looking to add their name to history books on Thursday, where She’s Extreme ($2.80) heads the market. Wakeful Stakes winner Zennzella ($6) and Ethereal Stakes victor Renaissance Woman ($9) look to be the key dangers to the favourite in markets with online Bookmakers.

Race 9: Red Roses Stakes (1100m)

We round out VRC Oaks Day with the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes for three-year-old fillies and despite being five weeks between runs, Bound For Home looks a great play in the last. The Rubick filly simply was bought undone by the on-rail bias second-up at Moonee Valley, but her win in the Quezette Stakes when fresh has her right in a race like this. Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra hops on board and with a genuinely run 1100m event expect, the race looks perfectly set up for Bound For Home to settle just off the speed and pounce on some potentially vulnerable leaders in the shadows of the winning post. She is already proven on wet ground and we expect to see her claim a second Group 3 win in three runs this campaign.

It is Ladies Day at Hawkesbury Race Club on Thursday afternoon with a nine-race card to dive into. We should be in for a perfect day of racing on the weather map, with plenty of clear skies predicted for race-day. The Ladies Day Cup features on the Good 4 surface, while the rail sits out +3m between the 1100m-450m markers and true positioning the remainder.

We are set to get underway at 12:55pm AEDT.
                          Ladies Day Cup: Kirwan’s Lane

We’ve got to be with race favourite Kirwan’s Lane for the feature Ladies Day Cup on Thursday afternoon. He’s third-up this preparation and looks set to peak in this 1600m contest, despite the top weight and 59kg for his trouble, Kirwan’s Lane has the superior form references to suggest he should be more than competitive in this Listed grade race. His second-up performance behind Cisco Bay at Randwick on October 15 had plenty of merit, only beaten by 3.2 lengths, Cisco Bay then proceeded to run an enormous second placing in the Big Dance on Tuesday. Kirwan’s Lane will appreciate getting back on top of the ground with a Good 4 likely and with Tom Sherry getting back on board with a terrific record of six starts for three wins and two more minor placings to his name, Kirwan’s Lane looks a best bet type for Ladies Day and should win the cup.

                          Best Bet at Hawkesbury: Jamesonheart

We wait for the lucky last to find our best bet in the form of the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Jamesonheart. This gelding by Deep Field looks to be going very well for the camp after winning stylishly first-up at Goulburn on October 4 by 0.4 lengths, he was back in the field and hit the line with real vigour to put them away and looks to find a similar contest on Thursday afternoon. His win came at BM66 at Goulburn, and he looks to go back to this BM64 race to get his back-to-back wins, even with the 61kgs on his back Jamesonheart looks a great bet in this company. Jason Collett will find a mid-field sit from the positive barrier draw before storming over the top late to get his third career win.

Next Best at Hawkesbury: Rosie Impact

Rosie Impact looks a great chance in the staying contest of the card in race four over the 2100m in Class 4 company. She looks ready to win after just getting beaten out by 0.5 lengths third-up at Gosford on October 21, she found the line very strongly that day after sitting at the tail of the field with no speed on, she was good enough to get within a half of her opposition that day. She steps up in trip to the 2100m and finds a firm deck for the first time in what seems like forever, Rosie Impact should be able to show the best of her three-year-old form on Thursday afternoon. Look for Adkins to get the gun run on this mare by Real Impact before steering her into the clear late. She should get her chance, and with clear running looks the one to beat.

Having first been run in 1861, the Group 1 VRC Oaks over 2500m for three-year-old fillies is one of the classics on the racing calendar and headlines ‘Ladies Day’ during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.

We have a field of 11 fillies this year, with Group 1 winner She’s Extreme opening as a $2.80 with online Bookmakers. Having claimed the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes on VRC Derby Day, Zennzella ($7.50) shares the second line of betting with Queen Air ($7.50), while Renaissance Woman and Foxy Cleopatra are the other two runners at a single-figure quote.

Having been prominent throughout the Wakeful Stakes on Saturday, we expect Pavitra and Zennzella to be the pace setters in the Oaks, with She’s Extreme likely to use barrier one to her advantage and be settled close to the speed throughout. Queen Air and Renaissance Woman are expected to settle at the rear of the field with rank outsider Albanian Icon.

The VRC Oaks has long been a race where favoured runners tend to get the job done and we expect the Anthony Cummings-trained She’s Extreme will become the 16th favourite to claim victory in the races since 1983. She brings arguably the best form into the race having finished two-lengths off Zougotcha in the Flight Stakes and was thundering home in the Spring Champion Stakes when beaten a half-length over 2000m. The 2500m looks to be right up her alley and considering she is more than capable on rain-affected going (8: 2-3-2) with a majority of her runs being on Heavy going throughout her career. Look for Tommy Berry to have this girl settled on the heels of the leaders throughout and when asked for an effort, She’s Extreme will shows the world she’s extremely good.

Foxy Cleopatra is having just her fourth career start on Thursday and we expect with natural improvement and the want to get out to the 2500m will suit her perfectly. She had excuses when beaten under a length by Renaissance Woman in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes on October 15, with her run looking like a perfect Oaks Trial. She will appreciate the tempo set by Pavitra once again like she did in the Ethereal and considering she has only started on rain-affected tracks, we knopw she will handle conditions with great aplomb. The in-form Blake Shinn sticks on board and in the small field, it wouldn’t surprise to see Foxy Cleopatra finish right over the top of her rivals in the Oaks.

It is hard to have Foxy Cleopatra without being wary of Renaissance Woman who got the better of her rival when they met in the Ethereal. Zennzella and Queen Air will be rock hard fit coming off impressive efforts in the Wakeful Stakes on VRC Derby Day.

She’s Extreme looks a clear on top selection, with a number rivals ready to pounce.
