DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:

Sixth Race: Post: 3:00 PT
Top Pick: 3-Lady T (5-1)

Freshened since August and showing the always dangerous route to sprint angle, this daughter of Into Mischief returns to dirt and drops from the Del Mar Oaks-G1 into a first level allowance affair in a move that should produce a significant bit of improvement. The John Shirreffs-trained filly has sprinted well over the local main track in the past and with sufficient help up front should offer a serious late bid. Regular pilot Victor Espinoza stays aboard and knows her well, so at 5-1 on the morning line she is worth a play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. Exacta players should consider hooking her up with the unbeaten American Lily, who has won her two starts by a combined 11 lengths but is taking on tougher foes today.

Top Pick: 1-Time to Party (7/2)

Was a sharp winner when stretching out for the first time two races back over the Santa Anita lawn and then was an unlucky fifth (beaten just over a length) when encountering traffic trouble in the upper stretch before finishing eagerly in the Let It Ride Stakes last time out. The Kantharos gelding surfaces in a much softer starter’s allowance grass miler today, lands the favorable rail, and retains Joe Bravo while projecting to be on or near the lead throughout. There’s good value to be found at his morning line of 7/2 if you can get it.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park begins the week with a 13-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in race 10 and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 10

1-High On Rocknroll (6/5)-Odds-on winner last week and it looks like this will be an encore at about the same price. Davis Jr should be in control or in the 2-hole and looks a cut above the rest.

Race 11

4-Big Fritz (8/5)-Won his last 2 races by a combined 17 3/4 lengths. This figures to be a sterner test but don't discount another trip to the winner's circle.
7-Type A Personality (3-1)-Fritz has made only 5 career starts and this 3-year-old has raced 26 times this year. Being more seasoned could help and does know how to win (26-14-6-2). It looks like a 2-horse race and both like to get on the engine. The price should be better than the one above but maybe the post edge will be the deciding factor.

Race 12

5-Cycline Banner N (9/2)-Willing to use Merriman in this spot and shoot against the morning line chalk #8 who is coming off a sick scratch. Has won 3 of 6 at Nfld and the last 2 times this pilot steered the night ended in the winner's circle.
7-Better Than Spring (7/2)-Has done well battling straight Open company and gets a post edge on #8 who is a tough foe. Does have the gate speed to get the top even with this post draw and may not look back.

Race 13

1-Tap Tap Tap (6-1)-Caught a great trip starting from the rail with a provisional driver last week. Claimed in last but the same pilot is back between the pipes and best to not discount the chances of tripping out again.
3-Lion Rock N (3-1)-This veteran has won 3 of 6 at Nfld and is in sharp form. Draws well and could get on the point and make every call a winning one.
7-Calvin K (5/2)-Won from this post 2 back and should be put in play with a chance to catch the leaders down the lane. Calvin knows his way to the winner's circle, winning 8 of 43 starts at Nfld.

Fair Grounds - Race #3

#6 Loneshilohspecial	She gets a good draw to prompt the issue from the outside, as she has a little bit of ability to finish in a race where most of them drawn further inside want to flash some pace.
#1 Graceleadsushome	Her best stuff fits well here, but I worry she'll be under pressure from the inside early on with a few other potential forward players lined up outside of her.
#4 Basalt Street	Think her best stuff might be on turf right now, but she has the right style to be a factor here from a bit off the pace. Think she's an okay fit here.
Race Summary	Loneshilohspecial has some pace and a mild ability to press and finish, and that might serve her well while drawn outside of some more committed pace players.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#4 Cafe Racer	The barn does decent work with these types locally, and there doesn't appear to be too much to worry about in here on paper. Wouldn't be a shock at first asking.
#1 Rally Board	He's another debuter who looks in with a chance at first asking, but she's probably going to get bet by default in this spot and might have to work for it from the fence. Makes sense.
#2 Amanwalksintoabar	Tactical player showed a bit of speed before fading late in the debut at Delaware, but it wouldn't be a shock to see him move up with that race under his belt and stick around a lot longer here.
Race Summary	Cafe Racer and Rally Board both go first out in a race that might not be the deepest we're going to see for the local level -- take a good look on the tote and track.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#6 Future Victory	Guessing this race won't go on the turf, but he's got a right to be tough if it does. There are a handful of potential pace players drawn out on the AE list to note if they get in, and this guy has shown a little versatility that suggests he can find a spot behind the pace without leaving himself too much to do -- regardless of whether other pace draws in or not.
#9 Guntown	He really sputtered out over last winter/spring, but he hinted at some talent early on in his career and would look like a pretty serious player on the main track if he goes. He seems to be working forwardly for this, and maybe some time away did him well. Choice for me on the main.
#13 C Falls	He probably makes a break for it early if he gets in on either surface, and it's not tough to see him sticking around for a piece of this with that sharp speed.
Race Summary	Future Victory gets the edge if this stays on the grass, and Guntown looks intriguing with some bounce-back potential off the bench here.

RACE 6: LIFELOVENLAUGHTER (#5)
I acknowledge that Alluring Angel (#9) is a contender in this Tepin Stakes, but I don’t think she’s some kind of standout in a race where she’s likely to be the clear favorite. She was compromised by a slow pace last time in the Miss Grillo, but she still didn’t produce much of a kick once she was angled into the clear. She had displayed a nice turn of foot in both starts prior to that, but I’m still not convinced that she isn’t primarily a closing sprinter. I wanted to avoid some others who could take money, such as Sweetlou’sgotaces (#1) and Smokie Eyes (#6). The former did run a fast speed figure last time when just failing to break her maiden, but she strikes me as more of a sprinter and Ray Handal has poor stretch-out numbers. Smokie Eyes ran fine in the Chelsey Flower, but I preferred some others from that race. The Classy One (#3)seemed to hit her best stride too late, but might deserve another chance here given her ample turf pedigree. My top pick is the filly who finished just ahead of that one in the Chelsey Flower. Lifelovenlaughter (#5) ran a bit better than the result might indicate, as she was never on the rail while chasing the pace throughout. I think each of the top two finishers in that stakes have some quality, and this filly was trying to battle back late after getting left behind in mid-stretch. There’s more speed signed on this time, and I would actually prefer to see her sit just off the pace and make a late run. Yet I also think she’s been coming along nicely with each start and may still have another move forward in her for a barn that is often underrated on this circuit. At a bigger price, I would also want to use Thirty Thou Kelvin (#7). She ran a lot better than the result suggests in her lone turf start, as she was setting a fast pace that collapsed. She subsequently broke her maiden on dirt, but I prefer her getting back on grass and she figures to be a generous price.
RACE 8: CHANGE OF CONTROL (#2)
I won’t be surprised when Lady Edith (#9) is once again the clear favorite. The public has really come around on this filly. She got ignored when she first came into Christophe Clement’s barn, going off at big prices in a few stakes attempts early in the summer. However, she outran her odds in those races and just kept improving slightly with each start. She obviously put forth one of her better efforts last time when easily winning the Autumn Days over this course, earning a flashy 98 Beyer. However, that was a weaker field than this one, and she worked out a perfect trip. Now Rosario takes over the reins, which will only further hurt her price, but I actually think her main rival is the more likely winner. Change of Control (#2) finished ahead of Lady Edith when they met in the Smart N Fancy at Saratoga. If you’re willing to throw out that failed synthetic experiment last time, you have to admire this mare’s consistency on turf. She may not always win, but she’s usually involved in the finish, regardless of the level of competition. She has also done some of her best work on the NYRA circuit in the past. She won this race last year, a few months after conquering the Intercontinental at Belmont. More recently, she finished a solid fourth against males in the Jaipur before that excellent Smart N Fancy effort. That form was obviously flattered when Caravel returned to win the BC Turf Sprint at massive odds. She drew a great post position and will be tough to beat if able to rebound with her usual solid performance. The other horse that I want to use is Star Devine (#10). She’s another coming off a recent loss to Caravel. She’s winless so far this season, but has faced some very good rivals along the way and rarely puts in a bad effort. She didn’t have much luck with the post position draw, but she’s versatile enough to work out a trip and was highly impressive winning her debut over this course once upon a time.
RACE 9: BELLA MICHELLE (#9)
I’m not trying to beat Bella Michelle (#9) in the finale. I’m not sure if she’ll go favored since another rival has some obvious angles working in her favor, but I view this Carlos Martin trainee as the most likely winner. She’s just getting significant class relief off her two prior dirt attempts. She raced greenly when not getting the best trip in her career debut at Saratoga. That was a field of some quality, so I won’t hold the large margin of defeat against her. She then showed improvement second time out when traveling well behind runners until the top of the stretch. She was no match for impressive winner Padma, but she stayed on well until the late stages. I’m not overly concerned with the turf loss last time and now she’s just getting back on the right surface against a much softer field. Her main rival does appear to be Willfull Desire (#4), who figures to take money based on the rider upgrade to Irad Ortiz from an inferior jockey. She’s also getting a noteworthy trainer switch from Gary Contessa to Ned Allard, whose two recent runners at NYRA have put forth huge performances, running well above their prior form. If this filly takes a similar step forward she’ll be tough to handle, but I expect that these angles will be reflected in her price. Tap It Up (#5) is perhaps a little more interesting. She’s run better on turf than dirt, but her lone main track start did come at a tougher level over a good, sealed track. It was also her debut for a barn that typically gets runners to improve after a start. She’s worth one more chance on dirt switching to Jose Ortiz.
