Race 7 at Turfway Park | Saturday December 3 | Post Time 3:45 PM Eastern
Holiday Inaugural Stakes | Purse $125,000 | Six Furlongs | Fillies and Mares, Three Years Old and Upward

The relatively new (about three years old) all-weather surface and big purses have immensely changed the makeup of the races at Turfway Park in Northern Kentucky from just a few short years ago. The facility has also changed, with superb high definition broadcast and graphics and a state of the art GPS tracking and timing system. The result is many races, like this one, with a big field and nice opportunity for profit because there is no heavy favorite.
Top contenders:
Among the group of 12 that is likely to run, including the possibility of either of two also-eligibles if any of the main group of 12 should scratch, Miner’s Queen (7) gets first look because in spite of having won three of her last four races she opens at 15/1. One of those wins came in the very last race of the Keeneland meeting last October, at odds of 26 to 1 under jockey Luis Saez, securing the riding title for the meeting in the very last race. All of her wins have come on grass but I’m not concerned about the transition to the all-weather surface as trainer Hernandez has won with three of his last four starters in sprints moving from turf to this surface. Jockey Sanjur gets back on after two races with other jockeys and is a perfect two-for-two aboard the hard knocking filly, who has been first or second in seven of 17 races in her career. Formerly in the care of top trainer Steve Asmussen, Miner’s Queen changed trainers privately this past May and has won three of four on turf since then (her two dirt races are to be ignored) and the 104 Equibase Speed Figure earned in her most recent race, with an equivalent class level to this stakes race as it carried at $137K purse, means Miner’s Queen has every right to win again and to post the upset in doing so.
Thundering Creed (4) has won two of three races over the Turfway Park surface, a little under one year ago and then in January of this year. She then finished third in a stakes here before five straight dirt races, in which she finished second twice. She got back into TOP form when moved to turf in September, first taking a stakes quality allowance race at Kentucky Downs before a bang-up second in the Franklin County Stakes, from which winner Caravel posted the upset win in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint one month later. The 103 figure Thundering Creed earned in the Franklin is amongst the fastest last races in this group and she’s in line for another top effort, once again piloted by Joe Rocco.
Ready to Venture (9) imported to the U.S. this past March and has won or placed in five of eight races since, including a perfect two-for-two record on all-weather like she runs on today. She won the $100K HBPA Stakes in Pennsylvania on the surface at the end of October, around two turns, and has won sprinting as well so shortening up is no issue, and she gets Gerardo Corrales to ride, one of the top jockeys the past few years at Turfway Park
Dynasty of Her Own (2) brings more depth to the field, as she’s won 12 of 27 races including 11 of 15 on an all-weather surface. She shipped out of California this past spring and got back into the winner’s circle in her fourth start for trainer Beattie in mid-October, with a sharp win from just off the pace. If she doesn’t win she never finishes second but opening at 8 to 1 she’s yet another horse with potential for profit if she wins here.
Beat the System (13) is definitely worth a look if she draws in from the also-eligible list as she opens at 20 to 1. She won two of her first 10 races then moved to the barn of good trainer Morey in September, showing a big late kick rallying from seventh to win at Woodbine on an all-weather track. That brought her record on the surface to four for 11. There’s a lot of “early” pace types here so her late kick should look very good if she runs, and with Morey having a fine 7 for 24 record in stakes races in the past year or so, this gal is another we might be kicking ourselves late if we didn’t make at least a token win bet at high odds.
Win bets:
This is absolutely the right race for betting two or three of the contenders to win. When betting multiple horses to win, we are absolutely cutting into our profit as only one can win, but we increase our chances of making a nice profit nevertheless.
In this case, I would consider two, maybe three win bets at 4 to 1 or more on these contenders: Miner’s Queen (7), Thundering Creed (4), Ready to Venture (9), Dynasty of Her Own (2) and Beat the System (13).
Additionally, if any of those horses are 10/1 or higher, instead of a place bet I’d bet an exacta consisting of that horse in second with all in first, for example ALL over Miner’s Queen (7).
Exactas:
As Miner’s Queen has been pretty consistent by finishing first or second in seven of 17 starts, this exacta key box could be well worth the risk: Miner’s Queen (7) over ALL and (the opposite) ALL over Miner’s Queen
Box Dynasty of Her Own (2), Thundering Creed (4), Ready to Venture (9) and Beat the System (13). This exacta assumes playing the Miner’s Queen over ALL and ALL over Miner’s Queen exactas. If not, then add Miner’s Queen to the four horse exacta box, making it a five horse exacta box. The cost for the $1 minimum is $20 and may be well worth the risk considering three of the horses open at odds of 8 to 1 or higher.

1^st race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (5) Classic Legacy (C) made a big improvement to run second behind an impressive Todd Pletcher runner in his second start for Bill Mott after getting bet down from 8-1 to 5-1. (2) Power in Numbers makes his debut for Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables. The son of Girvin is from a mare that was a graded stakes winner as a 2-year-old and now has produced four winners from four to start. (4) Bearings is a full brother to the graded stakes winner Mastery who won all four starts in his career. (1) One Bite ships up from Parx with a pair of third-place finishes.
7^th race [Remsen (G2), 1 1/8 mi] – (6) Quick to Accuse should appreciate the added distance after running second in the Sleepy Hollow behind Artic Arrogance. (2) Tuskegee Airmen won both of his starts for Kentucky Derby winning trainer John Servis. He broke his maiden at Parx and then shipped to Delaware Park to win the Rocky Run Stakes going a two-turn mile. (4) Artic Arrogance is another NY-bred and the winner of 2 out of 3 starts against state-breds including the Sleepy Hollow. (7) Dunyuhnell broke his maiden at the Belmont at the Big A meeting for Danny Gargan. In his debut at Saratoga he was fourth behind two very good horses including Instant Coffee, the recent Kentucky Jockey Club winner.
8^th race [Go For Wand (G3), 1 mi] – (3) Battle Bling is the winner of her last three starts moving from a handicap at Colonial Downs to a stakes win at Laurel Park and most recently in the Turnback the Alarm (G3). Since being claimed for $62,500 by Rob Atras a year ago she has a record of 9: 4-4-0. (10) Bank Sting has a great recent record against NY-bred competition, but she did win the open company Heavenly Prize at Aqueduct in March. She should get an ideal set-up for her stalking style. (7) Dr B gets the services of Irad Ortiz as she once again ships up from Parx. Last time she was second in the Pumpkin Pie at the Big A. (5) Sharapova has been off since April yet trainer Peter Eurton opts to ship her from California.
9^th race [Cigar Mile (G1), 1 mi] – (7) Mind Control will make the final start of his career that shows 11 wins and seven of those were in graded stakes. He won four races at Aqueduct and four races at the mile distance. The 6-year-old is known for winning heated battles down the stretch. His sire Stay Thirsty won the Cigar Mile in 2012 and his trainer Todd Pletcher won this race fives times. (2) Zandon will face older horses for the first time after battling with the best 3-year-olds in the country. He won the Blue Grass (G1) and then was third in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Last year he was second in the Remsen. He will cut back in distance and go one-turn for the first time since his debut maiden victory. (1) Double Crown stepped up to win the Kelso (G2) which was the final prep race for the Cigar Mile. (3) White Abarrio won the Florida Derby (G1) and three other races at Gulfstream Park. Race of the Week: Cigar Mile at Aqueduct | Saturday

The Lead:
Four graded stakes races, headlined by the Grade 1 Cigar Mile, share the marquee Saturday at Aqueduct. The undercard boasts the Remsen and Demoiselle for the 2-year-olds, along with the Go For Ward for the elder fillies and mares. Horseplayers on the 1/ST BET and Xpressbet platforms will be playing for $10,000 in additional hit-and-split cash.

Field Depth:
Grade 1 winners here include MIND CONTROL, ZANDON, WHITE ABARRIO and GET HER NUMBER among the field of 6. DOUBLE CROWN is a Grade 2 winner. Note: O BESOS will scratch.

Pace:
There's not a blazing amount of pace for a 1-turn Grade 1 stakes. MIND CONTROL may be quickest early and he's only set the tempo once in his last 7 starts. WHITE ABARRIO made the front in the PA Derby last out, but has led in only 2 of his 9 lifetime starts. Cheap speed OUTLIER looks overmatched, but could be used early. You don't want to be too far out of this race given the modest early set-up.

Our Eyes:
Three-year-olds have won the Cigar Mile 2 of the last 3 years and half of the last 6. That puts 2022 Grade 1 Blue Grass winner ZANDON and Grade 1 Florida Derby champ WHITE ABARRIO in the fore of handicapping thoughts. ZANDON cuts back from 2-turn races to a single bend for the first time since his debut last October. He's never been a high, turn-of-foot type. If he's to be successful in this race, he'll have to be kept closer to the pace like he was in the Jim Dandy when second-best to Epicenter. WHITE ABARRIO, like ZANDON, has been freshened since the PA Derby in September. It's WHITE ABARRIO who has been working with more zeal and intent, posting 3 bullet drills in his 5 works between starts. The move to jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. looks significant aboard the Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee. But trainer Chad Brown hits a wild 40% winners the past 3 years in Aqueduct 1-turn miles from 116 starters, according to Betmix. He'll have ZANDON cued up properly.

MIND CONTROL makes the final start of his career at age 6, racing for the 29th time. It's his first Cigar Mile appearance, but he's won the Jerome, Bay Shore and Tom Fool among his scores over this track. His trainer Todd Pletcher has a record 5 wins in the Cigar Mile, including last year with Americanrevolution. Jockey John Velazquez was aggressive aboard MIND CONTROL this summer when he upset Hot Rod Charlie in the Salvator Mile. The veteran will easily discern this pace scenario and likely put MIND CONTROL on or near the lead. He'll be a tough out.

GET HER NUMBER travels from his Southern California base and is no stranger to road trips. He's ventured to Oaklawn, Lone Star and Churchill Downs during the on-again, off-again saga of trainer Peter Miller in the last year or so. He comes off of 5 straight sprint races and extends to a mile or more on dirt for the first time since May of 2021. GET HER NUMBER could be best as a closing sprinter, but the 1-turn mile often flatters this type of running style.

The field is rounded out by DOUBLE CROWN, 42-1 upset winner over the Grade 2 Kelso over this track and trip, paying off his $40,000 claim from June; and OUTLIER, runner-up in his last 3 in claiming, starter and allowance conditions.

Most Certain Exotics Contender:
MIND CONTROL should be forwardly placed, owns a 7-7 in the trifecta record at Aqueduct and is a 3-time stakes winner over the track.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
GET HER NUMBER could be a slight overlay price, though triple-digit speed figures in 2 of his last 3 could slice into the price.
