Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, January 15

RACE 5: BALPOOL (#1)
My Betsy (#6) has run well in all three starts, but hasn’t exactly progressed much from a speed figure standpoint since the summer at Saratoga. She ran well in those first couple of starts, but then went to the sidelines for a few months. She returned last month with a solid second behind Occult, who starts as one of the favorites in the Busanda on Saturday, but I would have liked to see her put up more of a fight. The slight cutback to 7 furlongs shouldn’t bother her, and she figures to be right there at the end with her typical effort. I just thought some others had a bit more upside. My top pick is second time starter Balpool (#1). She didn’t take much money on debut, and ran like a horse who needed the race. She got bumped and steadied back at the start, putting her in last early. She raced a bit greenly on the turn, but I liked the way she responded when asked for her best in the stretch, finishing better than anyone else while closing into a slow pace. This barn isn’t known for success with these types, but the Atras barn has been doing well recently and I think this filly has a right to take a big step forward in her second start. I also think we could see more speed out of her if she breaks cleanly from the rail. The other runner I want to use is another second time starter from that same race. Shirl’s Delight (#3) took a bit of money took a bit of money that day and actually tried to show some speed after breaking a step slowly. She just got a little too keen racing down the backstretch and ultimately faded after making a mild move on the turn. She’s another who has a right to do better with that experience under her belt.
RACE 7: MONEY MIKE (#5)
Likely favorite Lastchanceatglory (#2) has been pretty popular at the claim box, changing hands in each of his last 6 starts. And it’s understandable why he’s appealing, since he’s just a neck shy of having won 4 of his last 5 starts. He comes off a decisive victory at this $40k level for Rob Atras, but he’s moving into another hot barn. Linda Rice is 12 for her last 24 (50%, $3.38 ROI) first off the claim at Aqueduct over the past 2 months or so, as of Thursday. He’s obviously the horse to beat, but his form is exposed and I think he’s landed in a race that features some others with upside at better prices. I don’t want to write off Famished (#4) just because he finished over 4 lengths behind the favorite last time. He did get a good trip that day, but this Horacio De Paz trainee has run some superior speed figures in the past and may appreciate getting back on a fast track. Another intriguing entrant is American Rule (#3), who returns from a 6-month layoff. He has plenty of prior races that give him a chance here. While the layoff is a concern, it’s worth noting that he’s not in for a tag. Orlando Noda has actually won with his last two starters off similar layoffs at Aqueduct, both in January. One of those, Glory Road, won in a similar situation, in a $40k claimer with the tag waived, ridden by Davis. I considered him, but I wanted to go in a different direction for my top pick. Money Mike (#5) seems like an odd participant in this race, as he’s primarily been a sprinter. His lone prior attempt at a mile didn’t go well, but I did like the way he finished in a two-turn 7-furlong race at Charles Town last year, a performance that may have been better than it looks. He is also bred to go longer, being out of the classy Ahh Chocolate, a Grade 2 and Grade 3 winner going 1 1/8 miles on dirt. He put in a relentless rally from off the pace to beat a field of conditioned claimers last time, making his third start in just two weeks. This is a much tougher spot, but he has been claimed by Jose Camejo, who is 17 for 53 (32%, $2.68 ROI) first off the claim on dirt over the past 5 years. I think this horse deserves another chance going longer, and he may be ready for a step forward now that he’s had 6 weeks between starts.
RACE 8: WHAT’S UP BRO (#7)
There are three main players in this New York-bred allowance affair. D’ont Lose Cruz (#6) could go favored as he switches into the barn of David Duggan after making an auspicious start to his career for the now retired Rick Schosberg. After just getting nailed on the wire in his debut, he beat a very good horse in the talented Mariachi to break his maiden. He perhaps didn’t run quite as well last time when losing the Notebook as the favorite, unable to fend off a game Acoustic Ave. He crossed the wire just ahead of today’s rival Starquist (#1) in that spot, but I prefer the Kimmel trainee from that race. There is plenty of speed signed on in this 9-horse field, so D’ont Lose Cruz figures to have some company up front. Starquist may get a better setup than last time, when he just ran out of ground trying to close down the dueling leaders. I still think this son of Nyquist will ultimately want more ground, but he has been improving with each start. These two should take the most money, but I’m most intrigued by the likely third choice in the wagering. What’s Up Bro (#7) ran like a horse who needed a race on debut, as he was a little slow into stride and raced greenly while taking plenty of kickback. He was much more professional in his second start, displaying improved early speed before pulling clear impressively. He earned a solid 93 TimeformUS Speed Figure, and horses have come back out of that affair to run well. The second-place finisher Quick Chaos won his next start, improving by 10 points, and the third-place finisher returned to improve his figure by 9 points. What’s Up Bro failed to change leads in the stretch of that last victory, so I think he still has room to improve as he steps up against winners.

(5) Trade Secret will drop down after getting claimed from her last two starts. She is now in the barn of Linda Rice which is red hot. (3) Keen Dancer did not run a step last time, but she hates wet tracks. The race before she was a winner for $25,000. (4) Choose Happiness will make a big drop in class to the lowest level in the past two years.
4^th race [Clm 25000 N3L, 6F] – (5) Reigning Chick (D) was bet down from 15-1 to 11-1 when she rallied to finish fourth and got claimed for $35,000. (1) Fantail ships to New York for prolific California trainer Jonathan Wong. Wong has a string at Turfway Park for the first time. He dominates the claiming game in Northern California. (3) Beautiful Karen is projected to be on the lead against this field. (4) Bankers Daughter gets a rider upgrade to Jose Lezcano and has raced against better in the past.
5^th race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (1) Balpool (B) raced greenly in her debut breaking slowly and then rallied into a slow pace from ninth to get fourth. (7) La Grotte set the pace and battled down the stretch to finish second beaten by nose. She can get loose on the lead in here. (6) My Betsy hit the board in all three of her starts for Bill Mott. (2) Avant moved from turf to dirt for Todd Pletcher and ran fourth as the favorite after pressing the pace. She will cut back from a one-turn mile.
6^th race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (5) Sourcing Network (A) got herded out in the stretch in her debut for Chad Brown and still just missed the win by a neck. (1) Wings Like Eagles set the pace in her last two starts which came after a layoff. Both times she got caught and had to settle for a top three finish. (3) Grannys Connection ran second in her first career start against NY-beds. (7) Charging Lady finished second as the favorite going a mile last time for Todd Pletcher. The well bred 5-year-old may be ready to win.

Race 7: Claiming

#2 Lastchanceatglory goes for two in a row today after defeating similar runners last time out over this track. This will also be his first race for Linda Rice today. #7 Styner drops down to the claiming race for this race today after running against starter allowance runners in his last few starts.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#6 Dont Lose Cruz has finished first or second in all three of his starts so far. He gets class relief today, which should make him tough to beat. #7 Whats Up Bro goes for two in a row today after blowing out the competition last time out over this track. He looks ready for this next step up the ladder.

Race 9: Claiming

#3 Johns Protege gets major class relief today after running poorly against tougher over this track in his last start. This class drop will help him tremendously. #5 Ginnsu Warrior was third at this level and over this track in his last start. He seems to be improving with each start on the dirt.

Race 1: Hung Shui Kiu Handicap
#4 Compulsory looks sound and did trial impressively recently. He looks well placed here stepping down to Class 5, which is more than suitable. He gets his chance. #2 Fighting Star has shown glimpses of ability at times. He draws favourably which should ensure he gets the run of the race. #5 Sunshine Legendary is a big threat. He’s tracking towards a first win and does shape as a solid each way prospect due to his powerful closing speed. #9 Euromissile gets Zac Purton aboard. Suspect he’s closing in on a first win.

Race 2: Kam Tin Handicap
#6 Wins All steps away from a favourable draw which he requires to show his best. Expect he can take up a forward position on the rail which should ensure he gets the run of the race. He hasn’t won for a while but this should pan out in favour of him. #1 Star Of Yuen Long has the class edge. He’s been competitive in the grades above and he won’t know himself in Class 5. #11 The Good Deal is tracking towards a first win. Karis Teetan’s pairing is a big positive. #9 Super Kingdom is finding his feet. Next best.

Race 3: Lam Tei Handicap (1st Section)
#1 Regency Bo Bo brings the right form to this and with even luck he is the one to beat. He’s placed behind a stack of quality of horses recently and a clean run late should afford him every opportunity to end a lengthy run of outs. #5 Daring Pursuit returns after that luckless first outing. He has class, so keep him safe, however, there are queries regarding his fitness. #2 Brave Dreams has a powerful finish. He can be right there as usual. Chances are #8 Hurry Hurry Rich fires through to lead. Big watch.

Race 4: Lam Tei Handicap (2nd Section)
#2 Universal Horizon returns now as a gelding. He impressed last season when winning on debut and since then he has been solid across two outings this campaign. His latest trial caught the eye and perhaps he can improve further now after the operation. #3 Multisuper has hit the ground running across two outings, finishing second and third. Strong booking of Zac Purton warrants respect. #13 Super Highway won well last start and has been performing consistent of late. #6 Denfield makes his debut. Keep safe.

Race 5: Nam Sang Wai Handicap (2nd Section)
#11 Speed Fay Fay gets the right draw. Expect he can save a stack of ground from there and with even luck nail another win. He’s held his form this term and if he performs anywhere near his first-up effort then he is the one to beat. #2 Millennium Falcon is consistent and has improved back in Class 4. #7 Owners’ Praise has impressed across both outings. He’s lightly raced and looks to have a stack of ability. Big watch. #12 Joyful Genius romped in last start. He’s up in grade but Zac Purton stays on.

Race 6: Nam Sang Wai Handicap (1st Section)
#4 Sparky Star has done everything right this season except win. He’s looking well at trackwork and his latest effort for second was sound. Hugh Bowman sticks aboard and he can win here. #3 Function Patch appeared to have a bit more under the hood last start. Expect with a clean run he shows a bit more. #13 My Intelligent can roll forward from the draw. He’s fit and has shown this term that he is ready to win again. #6 Fast Buck did well for second last start. He’s steadily improving with each outing.

Race 7: The Pok Oi Cup Handicap
#9 Victory Moments has caught the eye ahead of his debut. He’s shown potential in his barrier trials and clearly he has the ability with Zac Purton electing to ride him for his debut. The wide draw is ideal down the straight. #7 We Are Hero was without luck late last time out. He nearly wins with a clean run. Expect him to bounce back here. #2 Metro Warrior kept on for an overdue third career-win last start. Expect he’s held his condition between runs. #5 Pleasant Endeavor is always a threat down the straight.

Race 8: Ping Shan Handicap
#12 Happy Together has progressed nicely across his three outings in Hong Kong. He was a winner in Ireland over this trip and he proved last start that this distance suits at Sha Tin, as does the addition of a tongue tie. #4 Voyage Bubble is a nice horse who still appears to have plenty of rating points to climb. He gets his chance on the speed. #14 Happy Day slots in light and impressed last start over the course and distance. He’ll be in the finish. #7 Secret Vision placed against strong company last start. Next best.

Race 9: Tai Tong Handicap
#5 Ready To Win was without luck last start in the straight. He’s nothing short of consistent and is capable of atoning for that effort here. #8 Pulsar Strider travelled wide and without cover last start. His effort prior was excellent for second and it wouldn’t surprise to see him return to that level here. #3 Naboo Legend has done well at the trials but seemingly struggles to put it all together on race day. Expect he leads. Take an each way ticket on him at a price. #12 Dream Pursuer is next best. Expect improvement.

Race 10: Yuen Long Handicap
If #7 Navas Two can reprise his best form then he is capable of winning this weekend. His last two outings are forgive runs following post-race issues and two runs back when he travelled wide throughout. He can bounce back. #5 Galaxy Witness is much better suited to the grass than dirt. He is expected to drastically improve on grass. #12 Tuchel has been handed a horror draw but should be in the thick of the action regardless. #8 Tianchi Monster will be a huge price and just might be worth an each way ticket if so.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park has a 14-race card ready to go and the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

2-Alan (7/2)-Wasn't any match for a well-meant winner in last and missed a start before that outing. Should be bet here and is 0-19 on an off-track. Can be a major player on a dry surface and return to winning ways.
6-Don't Take My Keys (9-1)-Was caught behind stalled cover and went 3 wide to get on even terms with the leader but couldn't get his nose in front at the wire. Was off 3 weeks before the last race, might be driven more aggressively and could leave.

Race 12

1-Tookadiveoffdipper (9/2)-Was used a couple of times and was no match for the 2/5 chalk, who was a strong winner. Did finish off the mile nicely. Should be no worse than in the pocket after the wings fold and could trip out.
2-Just Bookem (5/2)-Was used hard to brush up before the 1/2 to get the lead and comes out of the same race as the one above. The fractions were quick and it took its toll down the lane. Looks like a main player and should get a less taxing journey.

Race 13

3-Bronx Seelster (2-1)-Comes off a sharp Nfld debut and could be better after a race over the oval. Wrenn can land the Burke trainee on the point or in the 2 hole and either can work for another picture.
4-One Last Laugh (3-1)-There is gate speed inside and this 6-year-old drops out of the Opens and might be bet down. Myers may leave or duck and then make an early move to get on the point. Should relish the company but may need to be leading turning for the wire to win.

Race 14

4-Barn Hall (8/5)-Went off at 1/9, couldn't last on the lead and finished 2nd. Moves up in class, Merriman takes the lines and is the 8/5 morning line chalk. Was recently facing Open Handicap company so should fit well with this crew. The same could have been said on 1-10 but either way it's hard to not include. For those who want to shoot against, this 5-year-old is 0-7 at Nfld.
5-Long Live The King (5-1)-Here is a veteran who has won 25 of 97 starts at Nfld. Recent form has been dull but has been facing tougher. Probably will be racing near the top of the stack and could offer some value.

Fair Grounds - Race #3

#1 Seriously Sam	A little worried that she's going to take some heat with another forward trip from the fence, but she has some upside in this second start off the long break and can be tough with a move forward.
#3 She's Wayne's	She makes her local debut off a good Delta try, but she has given away ground in the stretch call of all four career races, and that may not bode well for this long stretch waiting for her today.
#5 The Calling Stone	Think she completes a logical set of players in this one, as her two best lifetime races came in her two local starts, and she finished just in front of the top choice when they met last out.
Race Summary	Seriously Sam showed enough pace to think she's a forward player in here, and she has some room to come forward with that last race under her belt. Interesting if she gets let go as something like the second or third choice.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#7 Morning Cup	Tactical type was a good fit with similar at Churchill in that most recent start, and I think he's in line for another perfect trip here. Tough today.
#3 Flint Ridge	He drilled a cheaper group in his local debut last time out, and he has proven capable of running the kinds of races that would make him really tough here -- wonder if he's able to run back to it?
#1 French Composer	He occasionally finishes with some enthusiasm, and he's capable of bouncing back off the dull run when trying the local footing for the first time. Price for a piece.
Race Summary	Morning Cup probably doesn't offer much of a price in here, but I think he should land this with a perfect trip keeping tabs on Flint Ridge into the turn.

Fair Grounds - Race #7
