Jack's Free Pick Sunday: New York Giants +3
This is a rematch from Week 16 when the Giants lost 24-27 at Minnesota on a 61-yard field goal at the buzzer. The Giants deserved to win that game, and I expect them to have their revenge this time around. We'll take the 3 points for some insurance Sunday.
The Giants outgained the Vikings 445 to 353, or by 102 total yards in that first meeting. They averaged 6.7 yards per play on offense compared to just 5.0 yards per play for the Vikings. But the difference was a fumble and an INT that stopped two scoring drives for the Giants, plus a blocked punt that set up a Vikings score. There was a lot that had to go right just for the Vikings to sneak out a 3-point win.
Daniel Jones had one of his best games of the season, completing 30-of-42 passes for 334 yards while averaging 8.0 yards per attempt. Saquon Barkley rushed for 84 yards on 14 carries with a score while averaging 6.0 per carry. They should shred this Minnesota defense again, and head coach Brian Daboll is 3-0 in rematches this season, and 9-1 in same-season rematches dating back to his time as an offensive coordinator for Buffalo.
Minnesota is the most fraudulent 13-win team in NFL history. They are actually getting outscored on the season, but they have gone 11-0 in one-score games. I expect their luck runs out this week. The Vikings rank 28th in scoring defense at 25.1 points per game, 31st in total defense at 388.7 yards per game and 30th at 5.9 yards per play. This is not a playoff-caliber defense to say the least.
The Vikings have relied on offense to bail them out, but injuries are piling up for them on offense now, and the Giants are getting healthy on defense at the same time. Minnesota could be missing both starting tackles, and C Bradbury is banged up as well. The Giants have a dominant defensive line and will win the battle at the line of scrimmage. Dalvin Cook suffered a knee injury last week that will limit him even if he does go.
The Vikings put a lot into last week's game in beating the depleted Bears with most of their starters, while the Giants rested their starters against the Eagles and basically are off a bye week because of it. I trust Daboll over O'Connell in this matchup of first-time playoff head coaches to make the proper adjustments from that first meeting.
The Giants are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 playoff road games. New York is 7-0 ATS in its last seven games following a loss. The Giants are 13-4 ATS in all games this season and have been the most undervalued team all season in the NFL. Bet the Giants Sunday.
The NY Giants covered their fourth straight game and six of their last seven after losing to Philadelphia in the regular season finale, 16-22, as a 16.5-point dog. The Giants offense was mediocre all season, finishing 19th overall though 5th in rushing. The Vikings were 7th ranked on offense, 28th rushing and 6th passing. The Giants defense ranks 25th while the Vikings are 31st. This will be the first time in six years that the Giants will have made the postseason. These teams met just three weeks in Minnesota with the Vikings winning a close game, 27-24. The Vikings closed out their regular season with a win over the Bears, 29-13, covering the 6.5-point line. That cover snapped a four game spread losing streak. The Giants have covered their last four road games and are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 playoff road games. The Vikings are just 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 vs the NFC. The Vikings have gone over in six of their last seven games and are 6-0 Ov/Un in their last six Wild Card games. Minnesota is also 19-7 Ov/Un in their last 26 home games. Your free play is on the OVER.
Sunday NFL Free play. My selection is on New York plus the points over Minnesota at 4:40 pm et on Sunday.
Popular play or not, I like the Giants to 'upset' the Vikings in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon.
New York fell just short in its last trip to Minnesota on Christmas Eve, falling by a score of 27-24 in a spirited affair.
I like the way this Giants offense has come together over the course of the season and feel it's peaking at exactly the right time. It's easy to forget that the G-Men hung 38 points on the Colts just two weeks ago before resting their starters in last Sunday's hard-fought 22-16 loss to the Eagles.
Unlike earlier in the campaign, Brian Daboll hasn't been afraid to let QB Daniel Jones sling it all over the field, noting that he completed 30-of-42 passes for 319 yards against the Vikings back in Week 16.
Defensively, the Vikings are vulnerable to say the least. Giants RB Saquon Barkley ran wild against them in December while Jones went off through the air, as I mentioned. Arguably the Vikes best defender, safety Harrison Smith is still banged-up but expected to play on Sunday.
Speaking of injuries, Minnesota has also lost key offensive lineman Brian O'Neill to an achilles injury.
Meanwhile, the Giants will get back their top cornerback in Adoree Jackson.
Minnesota is 8-1 at home this season but has only managed to outscore the opposition by 1.8 points on average. Take New York.
