Rocket Picks : Oaklawn Park, Gulfstream Park, and Santa Anita for January 28, 2023
                      By: Aaron Halterman

Happy Pegasus Day! Let’s get a massive Saturday of racing kicked off today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the MIDDLE Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Oaklawn Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free middle Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                      Gulfstream Park January 28, 2023

Race 6: La Prevoyante Stakes (G3)

#5 Adventuring stretches back out in distance, which is similar to where she won 3 starts back at Kentucky Downs. She should get a solid stalking trip here, which will make her tough to catch down the stretch. #2 Personal Best gets back to the turf today, which is where she won 2 starts back at Aqueduct.

                      Race 7: Carousel Club Stakes
                      freestar

#3 Ramsey Solution gets back to the surface where he dominated last time out. #7 Summer Assault was a close second over this track last time out behind Skyro, who we like in second today. He should be competitive once again.

Race 8: Inside Information Stakes (G2)

#4 Obligatory is a perfect 2 for 2 over this track and she should get better positioning this time around after falling too far back in her last start. She will be tough to hold off down the stretch if she fires her best effort. #7 Maryquitecontrary has won 4 in a row coming into this one, including the local prep race.

                      Race 9: William L. McKnight Stakes (G3)

#4 Abaan won this race last year and has proven form in these marathon turf races, but we have not seen him at his best lately. #6 Temple finished second in this race in back-to-back years.

                      THE TICKET

                      $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 5 / 3,6,7,10 / 1,4,7,10 / 4,6,9,11 – $32

                        Visit Ladbrokes

The Group 2 Australia Stakes highlights a competitive nine-race program out of Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon as the Melbourne Autumn Carnival inches closer. With a 35-degree day forecast, we’re expecting quite a firm track on race day, with the Soft 5 track rating to quickly disappear.

The day of racing kicks off at 12:35pm AEDT with the rail in the true position throughout.
                        Australia Stakes Top Tip: Snapper

The Group 2 Australia Stakes has long been a strong form race heading into the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes and we’re hoping the summer form of Mike Moroney’s Snapper is the right way to go this year. The five-year-old gelding beat a similar field to what he faces on Saturday in the Group 3 Standish Handicap and returns to the Moonee Valley 1200m for the eighth time. The Power gelding has four wins and a minor placing from his previous seven goes at the track and trip and looks well-placed to build on that record here. He is a genuine speed influencer and from barrier five we expect to see him take up the running or at worst settle outside Jigsaw (race fave). Weight-for-age is a slight query, but if McNeil can cross Jigsaw and have Snapper gliding along out in front, he is going to take a power of beating.
                        Australia Stakes

                        Race 7 – Silk#6 Snapper (5)

                        5yo Gelding | T: Mike Moroney | J: Jye McNeil (58.5kg)

                        $4.20 with Bet365
Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Spacewalk

Our best bet of the day at The Valley comes up in the fourth event of the day when Godolphin send Spacewalk to the 1000m scamper. The three-year-old gelding was a tough watch at Rosehill for punters first-up when held up for a run in the home straight until it was all too late. He went down by a length on that day and with a step back in grade and Jamie Kah hopping he looks a clear best bet of the day. In his only start the “Melbourne way” he managed to finish ahead of Buenos Noches at Flemington in the Listed Poseidon Stakes, before losing the result on protest. We’re hoping it is second time the charm for Spacewalk as he comes to Melbourne. The son of Exosphere will appreciate the tempo being set by Bistro and Command Approved and under a well-timed ride, we expect Spacewalk to blouse the leaders and bring up a confidence-building win.
                        Best Bet

                        Race 4 – Silk#2 Spacewalk (3)

                        3yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: Jamie Kah (60kg)

                        $3.30 with Bet365
Next Best at Moonee Valley: Worsfold

We need to wait for one of our bets of the day as the Nick Ryan-trained Worsfold steps out in the final event of the day. The six-year-old gelding has strung two smart victories at Sandown to begin his campaign since transferring to Nick Ryan’s stable and looks well-placed to bring up a hat-trick of wins. Blake Shinn hops back on board having partnered this bloke to his victory two runs back and from barrier seven looks set to gain a perfect run in transit around midfield with a bit of cover. With a genuine tempo expected and a strong turn of foot, we expect Worsfold to be building through his gears on the turn and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.
                        Next Best

                        Race 9 – Silk#4 Worsfold (7)

                        6yo Gelding | T: Nick Ryan | J: Blake Shinn (60.5kg)

                        $3.20 with Palmerbet
Best Value at Moonee Valley: Uniquely

Having won in impressive fashion three starts back at this track and trip, we’re hopeful the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Uniquely can offer plenty of value early on in the card. The five-year-old mare relishes firmer going which she gains on Saturday and considering her win three runs back saw her beat the progressive Wahine Toa suggests she is way over the odds with online Bookmakers. She will be giving her rivals a start from the back of the field, but if Noonday Gun and Bold Bourbon can make this a genuinely run 2040m event, look for the big grey to be flashing home late.
                        Best Value

                        Race 2 – Silk#10 Uniquely (11)

                        5yo Mare | T: Dan O’Sullivan | J: Celine Gaudray (a3) (58.5kg)

Racing heads to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday afternoon for a very competitive 10-race program. There’s plenty of quality racing on offer, including the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes for the two-year-old colts and the Group 3 Widden Stakes for the two-year-old fillies. As gallopers return for a likely future tilt at the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Golden Slipper. We’ve also got the Expressway Stakes at Group 2 level for the older horses over the 1200m sprint.

The track is currently listed as Soft 6 for Saturday with some scattered showers throughout the week, so that looks the most likely scenario for race-day. The rail has moved out +5m the entire circuit for the meeting and we’ll be looking for a fair surface with tempo being the main factor bring backmarkers into play late in the day. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 12:20pm AEDT.
Canonbury Stakes Top Tip: King’s Gambit

King’s Gambit looks to be absolutely flying heading into this first-up assignment and despite the short quote with online Bookmakers, we’re with him in the Canonbury Stakes. His initial win as a two-year-old in the Debutant Stakes on October 8 was sublime, smashing his rivals by five-lengths going away from his opposition. Since that dominant win he’s been put away for a 112-day spell and returns on the back of a soft trial win at Randwick on January 9, where this son of I Am Invincible travelled in sensational fashion to the line. He’s given every indication he’s well enough to produce first-up and the Peter & Paul Snowden camp is one you can trust with their two-year-old crop. King’s Gambit is short on Saturday; however, if you’re not willing to bet at the price, it might be worth an investment in a futures market for the Blue Diamond Stakes or Golden Slipper, where he’s currently a $4 and $5 chance respectively. James McDonald takes the reins on Saturday and will look to sit in behind likely leader, Red Resistance, before powering past his rivals again.

Widden Stakes Top Tip: Perfect Proposal

The two-year-old fillies race looks a lot tougher on paper; however, we’ve sided with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained filly, Perfect Proposal. Her debut before going to the paddock was a strong front-running effort behind stablemate Platinum Jubilee on October 1 in the Gimcrack Stakes at Group 3 level. She was only beaten 1.3 lengths on that occasion and looks to have returned from her 119-day spell in good order with two barrier trials, trading blows with race favourite Learning To Fly. In both barrier trials Perfect Proposal led them up and found well late, which is the exact pattern we expect to see out of this daughter of Russian Revolution on Saturday. Tim Clark has been with this filly since her debut and from the nice draw of barrier four, he shouldn’t have any issues getting across to the rail to lead, before kicking clear as she did in her debut, this time to victory.

Expressway Stakes Top Tip: Golden Mile

The Expressway Stakes sees the return of star three-year-old colt, Golden Mile, and we think he’s one of the better bets on the Rosehill program. He featured in the springs best feature events; including taking out the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on October 8 over the 1600m. He was consistent throughout the entire preparation as well, with an impressive fourth in the Golden Rose prior to that behind Jacquinot and evening going back to his first-up second placing behind Kibou in the Up and Coming. He now returns after a short 98-day spell and should be figuring here on what we’ve seen at the barrier trials as well, running into a soft third behind Nominator at Randwick. James McDonald takes the reins here for James Cummings and from barrier four should be sitting somewhere in the top half of the field, stalking likely-leader Forbidden Love, throughout the 1200m contest. Other horses may have the fitness edge; however the class of Golden Mile should offset that.

                          Best Bet at Rosehill: Spacewalk

The first leg of the quaddie is where you’ll be finding our best bet of the afternoon at Rosehill, as Spacewalk should be figuring in this BM88 contest. His first-up effort was referenced in our latest edition of the Follow Files and as discussed there, Spacewalk was one of the forgive performance of the afternoon on January 14 behind Mariamia. He got back and somehow didn’t find clear running in the seven horse field before closing off strongly into third. He clearly should’ve finished closer, and we want to be with him second-up here. Reece Jones gets a 1.5kg claim here to see Spacewalk with just 51.5kg and we think the instruction from the Godolphin team will be to press forward and lead from barrier six and take all luck out of the equation. If he can bowl along here and find a cheap sectional or two, this son of Exosphere will be too speedy for his opposition on Saturday afternoon.

Best Value at Rosehill: Super Strike

Super Strike is a horse that looks to peak fourth-up in the preparation and we’re happy to be with him on the each-way basis in the penultimate. He’s had three solid performances so far since arriving in Australia and while his latest behind Jojo Was A Man on Christmas Eve at Randwick may have seemed a little one paced, it was in a small field with very little tempo. That shouldn’t be the case getting back to Rosehill in a bigger field where we loved his performance over the 1400m behind Cavalier Charles just 1.5 lengths away. If this Super Easy gelding can run up to that effort, he should be right in this. In form apprentice Amy McLucas gets the 3kg claim and for the first time there’s a possibility he sees a wet deck since arriving from New Zealand which will only be a positive. The $9.50 on offer with online betting sites makes him a great each-way bet on Saturday.

Racing returns to Morphettville on Saturday afternoon where a bumper nine-race program is scheduled for Durbridge Stakes Day. With warm weather forecast in the lead up to the event, we are set to start on a track rated Good 4, whilst the rail returns to the true position, meaning perfect conditions are set to greet punters.

The action out of the ‘City of Churches’ commences at 12:17pm AEDT.
Durbridge Stakes Top Tip: See You In Heaven

The Listed Durbridge Stakes (1100m) is the feature event of the day out of Morphettville on Saturday, and we are hoping the Sandown Guineas winner from the spring – See You In Heaven – can return in a winning manner. The three-year-old filly gets in with the lightweight of 53kg, some 5.5kgs off her main market rival Kemalpasa. She no doubt gives away a class edge to some of her rivals, but if See You In Heaven is anywhere near her best, she is right up to this type of class. She relishes firmer ground and from barrier nine, look for Ben Price to come across and try and find cover around midfield. She has a sharp turn of foot, and we expect her untapped ability to take her a long way in the Durbridge Stakes.

                            Best Bet at Morphettville: Endlessly

Our best bet of the day at Morphettville comes from the Phillip Stokes barn – Endlessly – who is set to have her first start for her new stable. Previously with the Hawkes team, the five-year-old mare has always shown above average ability, but on occasion had failed to live up to expectations. Her win first-up at Mornington on May 24 showed she can be a real sit and sprint type of galloper and in a race where she is drawn low over 1050m, she looks to gain a relatively uncontested lead. She has chased home Melbourne city class gallopers like Daily Bugle, Quraysha and Niccolite in her career and if she is anywhere near her best, we expect Endlessly to not only win, but do so in emphatic style. The $3.20 available with online betting sites looks a ludicrous price.

Next Best at Morphettville: Chicago Storm

One of our better bets of the day comes up in the final event of the day when David Aldridge steps out over 1200m. Having won twice and placed on three other occasions, this four-year-old gelding looks to have the most upside out of all these runners and we expect Barend Vorster will get the best out of him. From barrier 14, we expect Vorster to take luck out of the equation and have this son of Trust In a Gust coasting along out in front. He is yet to miss the top two when first-up from a spell and with a sharp trial win at Strathalbyn under her belt, he looks raring to go first-up from a near six-month spell.

Best Value at Morphettville: Prance ‘N’ Dance

We will be looking to strike some value early on Saturday when the John Croucher-trained Prance ‘N’ Dancer searches for a third career win. The three-year-old filly is the veteran of the field having her 13th starts but is as honest a filly as you could hope for. She looks to be an out and out 1000m sprinter, so the step back to the 1050m from 1200m should suit this girl perfectly. The daughter of Sir Prancealot makes her own luck up on speed and from barrier eight, Anna Jordsjo should have no issue in getting across and settling outside the expected leader Dunmaghlas. With rock hard race fitness behind her and experience under her belt, we are willing to side with Prance ‘N’ Dance at a nice price with online Bookmakers.

Ascot Racecourse will host its annual Scenic Blast Stakes Day, with the Listed $125,000 Scenic Blast Stakes being the highlight race on the competitive nine-race program. The current track rating of a Good 4 is the expected rating that we should see on Saturday. The rail will be out in the +11m position, which should suit on-speed and leaders for most of the day.

The first race on Scenic Blast Stakes Day will jump at 12:28pm AWST.
                              Scenic Blast Stakes Tip: Acromantula

The Listed Scenic Blast Stakes will see the Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained Acromantula take on Hows The Serenity again, after the former finished third behind latter in the Listed Summer Scorcher going down by just under two lengths. However, on Saturday Acromantula will have a 5kg weight swing on the mare, which we believe will be enough for the gelding to turn the tables. This son of Written Tycoon has only been 1200m once in his short career, which was in the Placid Ark Stakes at his second career starts as a three-year-old, where he finished last of eight. With another 16 starts and two more years of growth, this guy should be ready to step back up to 1200m, with the aid of barrier one and no weight on his back. William Pike will be legged aboard for the first time and from the inside gate, we should see Pike push for the lead and battle it out down the home straight with the race favourite, Hows The Serenity.

                              Best Bet at Ascot: Metallon

Our best bet of the day will be the Todd Harvey-trained Metallon who will be returning from a nine-month spell with the benefit of one trial at Lark Hill over 950m on January 23. This four-year-old gelding has won four of his first six starts, including three in a row to kick off his three-year-old campaign in March last year. During that win streak, this son of Oratorio beat State Of Power and Sniparoochy who have since gone onto win nice races throughout the spring, especially in Sniparoochy’s case, as he went on to win the Listed Jungle Mist Stakes in November. Shaun McGruddy will take the ride on Saturday going for his fourth win at his fifth ride on this very talented gelding. From barrier six, McGruddy will push forward and look to settle outside the leader and push the button on the home turn to kick clear with 300m to go.

In the third race of the day, the Justine Erkelens-trained Wee Ripper will be second-up coming off a very good second place finish when fresh last start at this track and trip at a massive price with online Bookmakers. This eight-year-old gelding has won two of his five starts when second-up, whilst he also has good track and distance record, with one win and two placings from five attempts. This son of Blackfriars will most likely drop to the back of the field and look to run on, but if no one pushes to take up the lead, we could see this gelding and Brad Rawiller push forward and take up the lead. Rawiller sticks after riding this guy to defeat first-up, which fills us with more confidence that he will be in the right spot and ready to win on Saturday.

                              Best Value: Nobelity

In the second leg of the quaddie, the Mike Santich-trained Nobelity will be coming off a good second placing behind Saloon Bar, where she lead for 1100m of the 1200m event before she was run over by a smart one late. This daughter of Alfred Nobel has finished in the top four at three of his four starts this campaign and she has led or sat outside the leader at all those starts, which is the race pattern that we expect to suit the track on Saturday. After running at the 1200m last start, she should be fitter and ready to win again on Saturday, where she will jump and take up an uncontested lead. Laqdar Ramoly will jump aboard for his fifth ride on this mare and if he can get a cheap sectional mid-race, we expect her to kick clear on the home turn and give them something to catch in the final stages of the race.

The Alice Springs Turf Club will be the centre of attention in the Northern Territory on Saturday when it hosts a competitive four-race meeting at Pioneer Park. There has been no rain in the Red Centre since January 13 and although it will be partly cloudy on Friday the dry weather should continue with only a 30 per cent chance of precipitation. However, a possible shower or two has been forecast for Saturday – in fact there’s a 70 per cent of rain. Not enough though to affect the dirt track where a good surface and a top temperature of 34C awaits horses, jockeys, trainers, owners and patrons.
Best Bet at Alice Springs: Fair Go

Fair Go was aiming for three straight wins last weekend and looked a real show when leading for most of the race before being overtaking in the home straight to finish second over 1100m (0-58). Lumping 60kg, the son of Anacheeva was spotting the winner Real Devine a hefty 5kg and was by no means disgraced, going down by a length. Prior to that Fair Go had made it back to back wins over 1400m (BM54) and 1600m (0-64) in December. The former Victorian galloper is clearly in good form and although Pembroke Castle and Hard Work Rewards should provide decent competition, he should prove far too good, especially over the much preferred distance of 1400m.

Next Best at Alice Springs: Lethal Encounter

Got the money in sensational fashion last start over 1400m (Class 2) on December 18. The 5YO gelding stood in the gates and was a clear last, but once entering the back straight he had made up considerable ground despite sitting well back in eighth place in the 10-horse field at the 1000m mark. With 600m to go, the son of Squamosa was easily spotting the leaders eight lengths and was seemingly no chance. However, Lethal Encounter was on the move and once turning for home he stormed home to grab the leader on the line to win by half a head. The former Victorian charger hasn’t done much wrong in eight starts in the Alice and Kununurra missing a place on two occasions.

Next Best Again at Alice Springs: Real Devine

Real Devine sat behind the leaders in fourth place last weekend over 1100m (0-58) and looked a million dollars before rounding the leaders once turning for home to post an impressive win over Fair Go and City Jet. Was quoted at $10 earlier in the week with online betting sites, but recent form suggests that the four-year-old mare is bound to receive plenty support and will surely start at a much shorter price on race day. The daughter of Real Saga failed to run a place in her first eight starts in the NT after arriving from Queensland, but a win at Kununurra last September clicked her into gear and she has been placed twice in her past three starts at Pioneer Park. Will carry an extra 3kg this week, but last week’s effort was full of conviction.
