Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has an 11-race card ready to begin the week. The headliner comes in Race 8, an Open Handicap Pace with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 8, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 8

3-Feelin Western (6-1)-Posted a win in the 2nd start for the Di Domenico barn and showed some guts. That should not be a surprise because this 5-year-old knows how to win, 24 of 70 lifetime and 9 of 32 at YR. Steps-up but draws well and the price should be right to take a swing.
4-Nandolo N (2-1)-Back at home base after a big rally to win at M1. Took advantage of crazy hot fractions but make no mistake it was a standout effort. Best to not overlook although the price will be tiny. Has hit the board in 21 of 30 starts with 12 trips to the winner's circle.

Race 9

1-Peace Out Posse (7/1)-Makes the 2nd start after a month off and won't discredit because of last week's no move race from post 7. Leaving from the rail shouldn't hurt and will need a big try, but there isn't a standout in the field.
2-Tito Rocks (9/2)-Comes off a decent effort after having 3 weeks off and finished 2nd at this class. Likes to race near the top of the stack and Gingras should work that type of trip.
4-Covered Bridge (5/2)-Steps up after a gate to wire score. Has beaten better than this in the past and Stratton has options. Doesn't need to be used hard off the gate, can win coming off a helmet.

Race 10

3-Delightful Terror (5/2)-Won last time after returning from the Big M and now steps up. Willing to use and try to beat the morning line chalk #2, who has 2 wins in the last 20 starts and is 0-3 at Yonkers. Gingras should have the 6-year-old in striking range turning for the wire. Hit the board in 26 of 48 at YR and has posted 8 wins.
7-Velocity Komodo (10-1)-Looking for a price and the Stratton barn has been rolling. This veteran hasn't raced since 12-19 but fits with this crew. Went off as the chalk before the Holidays and got a rough trip to finish a close 4th. Has won 15 of 69 races here and could surprise if dialed on high.

Race 11

1-Dragon Said (5/2)-Jenn B entry put in a couple of quick miles at M1 against better and could wire this crew. Drops to a good level at its favorite track and can take its 1st picture of the year. Has hit the board in 23 of 32 here and may finally connect for a win in its 5th try on Lasix.
3-Jahan Hanover (2-1)-Bumps up after a sharp win leaving from the 8 hole. The Engblom barn has been clicking and Bartlett sticks. Could get a pocket ride behind the one above.

Mahoning Valley - Race #4

#1 Soulstone	She's already had 15 starts, so she's not brimming with good excuses, but she has been facing better than this and might find this basement level a bit more to her liking.
#3 Hops Petunia	She has some pace that makes her dangerous, but she doesn't tend to stick around all that well in the lane -- and she's already had a chance with this kind and still faded. Hangs underneath?
#5 Iron Wilma	Tactical type is another who has had her share of chances (19), but she should find a good trip and doesn't appear overmatched with these.
Race Summary	Soulstone is part of an entry in here, and she should be a good fit with this kind after settling for underneath shares with better groups. Think she graduates today.

Mahoning Valley - Race #6

#2 Swift Rithms	She should be in line for a good run from close range, and I think she can step up and win right back after proving a good fit with the locals in recent starts.
#6 Mon Paradis	She's typically along too late, but she brings some fairly reliable route form with her to this one and might plug away for a piece.
#3 Ticklish	She might be too cheap for the locals, but I wonder if a more leisurely route tempo will allow her to grind at one pace and land a share.
Race Summary	Swift Rithms has good positional pace and looks like a good fit right back while stepping into her next condition -- something like the 3/1 ML price would be attractive.

Mahoning Valley - Race #7

#9 Run Bubba Run	Think he has a bit of price appeal from off the splits, as he meets a couple in here with some fairly sharp pace, giving him a chance to settle for one big run at a decent price.
#2 Reinvestedinterest	He turned in a massive effort off the claim for the new team, but he has typically been in a bit deep when facing this kind in the past. Not sure if he can hold the form from that last one.
#4 Doctor Wu	He wasn't embarrassed with similar a couple starts back, and he might get a decent finishing run while still getting the jump on the deeper closers.
Race Summary	Run Bubba Run steps up off a couple decent efforts, and he might get a decent enough race shape to give him a chance to get over the top late. Third start of the campaign has something better in store for him?

Race Summary	SHOE GAME caught the favorite in a long and short sprint, on a fast and good track, in her last two starts. She should sit a good trip from just off the pace and is taken to three-peat on the class rise. Bet to win and place and play a 1-2-7 exacta box.

Turf Paradise - Race #3

#7 PARLEY STREET (6-1)	Runs for Garcia, offers good value, use on all tickets.
#2 DEVIL’S TEETH (3-1)	Just missed after long duel in same spot, starts fresh.
#5 TUMAC MOUNTAIN (4-1)	Sprung 39-1 shocker against ‘Devil’ but not in faster-paced follow-up.
Race Summary	PARLEY STREET is a steady check-getter who likes Turf Paradise and can run back in the same condition even if he wins. He was re-claimed three times in the past year by this barn and gets the nod at a good price. Bet to win and place.

Turf Paradise - Race #7

#4 LORD BRANCUSI (3-1)	Earned keep in 2022 allowance ranks, goes from one good barn to another.
#1 YOU SPLIT TENS (4-1)	Edged away late for pair of 6-1/2F upsets recently, meets better.
#2 STAND TO (6-1)	Pressed pace 3-wide, out-kicked by the favorites in 1:08.4 at 6F.
Race Summary	LORD BRANCUSI had a win and five seconds in seven allowance races last year out of town. He was heavily backed against the likes of Honeymoonz Over (18-69, $358k) and Memo Daddy (5-29, $129k). Bet to win and place.

I think PONTIFFANY is a decent choice. Displays the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 60 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the best in this field. Should definitely be carefully examined in this event if only for the very strong speed rating posted in the last contest. Has a solid record at the distance and surface, which makes me give my vote to this filly. SHIRLEY GREENE - The speed figure of 63 from her last affair looks very good in here. Has been racing solidly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. POWWA OF LOVE - Has earned reliable speed figures in dirt sprint races in the past. Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of quite good win percentage - 16 percent - at this distance & surface.

KEYPIT - Entered a $7,500 Claiming race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour last time around the track and raced on the mud finishing fifth. Have to do better in this field. TURN TO ME SUCREE - This mare is in nice physical condition, having run a nice race on January 10th, finishing third.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 PRESCIENCE (ML=7/2), #7 GALILEO'S AFFAIR (ML=4/1), #2 NO SNIVELING (ML=9/2),

PRESCIENCE - Would have to advance off that fourth place finish last time out to make an impact here. Finished fourth in her most recent effort with a disappointing speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this bunch. GALILEO'S AFFAIR - This less than sharp equine hasn't won in her last ten attempts. She's not worth the value today. Granted the last race was nice, finishing second. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. Most unsatisfactory speed fig last time out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 1 mile. Don't think this entrant will improve too much today. NO SNIVELING - This horse hasn't shown too much in the last two races. Most unsatisfactory speed rating last out at Turfway Park at 1 mile. Don't feel this entrant will improve too much in today's race.

AGADOR SPARTACUS - I expect a lot from this magnificent animal. His Equibase speed figures under similar conditions are tops in this field. Was in a Maiden Special race at Santa Anita in the last race. That contest had a class figure of 84 and he is moving down in this race. A certain win candidate. We have lots of early speed with this steed. He could wire this field. In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the grass. This one has the highest average class rating in the group. I like this gelding. Has the topmost earnings per start in this contest. ROYAL AIR FORCE - I expect a lot from this fine animal. His Equibase speed figs under similar conditions are tops in this field. Have to give this gelding a good shot. Ran a good race last out within the last month. PRECEDENT - Mawing rode this mount for the initial time in the last race and comes right back this race. This jock/conditioner duo has been producing a very positive ROI, right at +85. Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track in the last race. On a fast track, has a good shot right here. INCREDIBE MO - Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a pretty good race. Speed figs on the turf point to this horse as a legit contender. Has the best in the field for this dist-surf. 37-66-71 are last 3 speed figures. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this field. Look for this gelding to run a lot better today. Last affair at Turf Paradise finishing fourth on the soft turf is no sign of his true ability.

SWEET SAVANT - This colt has already lost as the favorite twice. Hard to give him another chance. This chalk horse hasn't motored around the track in awhile. No drills since last race. INESPERADO - Had to show me more than that in the last race. Never made much of an impact. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will make a winning move today. That last fig was most unsatisfactory when compared with today's class rating. AWESOME MOVE - Equibase speed figures tell a story of dropping physical condition. Hasn't been coming close at all of late.

ROGERS GINGER looks to be a very strong contender. He has been running quite well and the Equibase speed figs are among the best in this field. Could best this group based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 57 - of his last effort. Has run solidly when running a dirt sprint race. MY TWO AUNT JOANS - Has performed admirably lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 56 avg speed rating. With a very good 57 speed figure last time out, will surely be a factor in this competition. WHEN IN ROME - The handler wheels this horse back almost immediately to race again. The average class fig of 46 makes this one difficult to beat.

Jackson State is 4-1 ATS last 5 games after a SU loss. Jackson State is 5-2 ATS last 7 games after an ATS loss. Jackson State is 7-1 ATS last 8 games when playing on Monday.
