Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Saturday, February 18
Posted on February 17, 2023 by David Aragona

RACE 2: MONDAY MORNING QB (#4)

The favorites have a definite speed figure advantage in this optional claimer. Sheriff Bianco (#3) looks like the fastest horse coming into this after earning TimeformUS Speed Figures ranging from 113 up to 118 in his last four starts. He regressed slightly when losing at this level last time, but he was being asked to get a mile that day, the farthest he’s ever gone in his career. Now he’s cutting back to a more appropriate distance for the dangerous Linda Rice barn. His main rival appears to be Nabokov (#1), who also sports some strong speed figures. He most recently earned a career-best 114 TimeformUS number last time out when just missing at this level. He arguably ran the best race that day, surviving an early pace duel before just succumbing to his late-running stablemate. King Angelo (#2) is also not without a chance, though he was soundly beaten by Sheriff Bianco two back. However, he didn’t make use of his early speed that day and was finishing well in the stretch once steered into the clear. They’re all win candidates, but I’m going to get a little more creative with Monday Morning Qb (#4). We’ve seen these Lynn Cash horses outrun their odds on a number of occasions this winter, as many of them seem to improve on the NYRA circuit despite showing lackluster form elsewhere. This horse fits that pattern, as he ran better than it might appear in his last appearance at Aqueduct in December. He was contesting a very fast early pace that day and just couldn’t quite hold off the slop-loving Milton the Monster. That race didn’t get much of a speed figure, but other horses have come back to run well out of it. Monday Morning Qb has since regressed at Laurel, but I like him turning back in distance and the TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting that he’ll have a tactical advantage.

    RACE 3: MOMMASGOTTARUN (#3)

I suppose Falconet (#5) and Battle Bling (#2) will attract most of the play in this Heavenly Prize, but I’m not thrilled with either favorite. Falconet took advantage of some favorable circumstances last time in the Ladies, as she got first run on her main rival. She sat a perfect trip stalking outside and took over while Battle Bling was stuck in a pocket behind horses. They both make some sense, but I have some doubts about the overall quality of that Ladies. The horses who finished behind them aren’t very good and I wanted to look elsewhere in this short field. Among the shorter prices, I’m much more interested in Frost Point (#1). This mare was unsuccessful against stakes company last year, but she didn’t seem to appreciate the stretch-out to 9 furlongs the two times that she tried tougher company. She came back from a layoff in late December looking better than ever, as she easily swooped past an optional claiming field to win by nearly 4 lengths. A repeat of that performance certainly puts her in the mix here. Yet I want to get more creative with a longshot. Mommasgottarun (#3) has been an interesting project for trainer Linda Rice. It seemed counterintuitive that she would stretch this horse out off the claim in January, as she had been more effective sprinting up until that point. Yet this filly has appeared to relish route distances in her last couple of starts. The strange thing about her is that she has this habit of disengaging midway through her races. She’s done it at around the half-mile pole in each of her last two starts, abruptly dropping back before regaining momentum to rally in the stretch. I’m hoping that the return to one-turn racing will help to keep her engaged throughout, as she has shown some talent in her last couple of starts. Rice may just be starting her here to help the race go, but I don’t think she’s as overmatched as it might appear at first glance.

    RACE 7: RIDE UP (#9)

This maiden special weight event is arguably the most interesting race on the card, as you can make a case for many runners and there appear to be some lightly raced horses with potential. Register (#1) might be the horse to beat after finishing second at this level twice in a row. While he ran a faster speed figure last time, I actually thought he ran better in his career debut. He got a pretty rough trip that day, as he was steadied early and then had to awkwardly alter course at the top of the stretch before commencing a rally. Last time he got a much softer trip and wasn’t able to seal the deal. The first time starter who defeated him may be pretty good, but this horse does have some things to prove as he stretches out in distance. Power in Numbers (#4) makes sense as he makes his second career start for Chad Brown. He took plenty of money on debut, but ran like a horse who needed the experience. He broke well but then got mildly shuffled on the backstretch before getting back into the bit and running on for second. He has a right to improve, but I actually preferred the horse who finished right behind him. Ride Up (#9) didn’t take nearly as much money in that spot and he broke slowly from the rail, like many horses from this barn. The pace was fairly slow, so this colt deserves a ton of credit for making much as much ground as he did to run up into third. He also galloped out very strongly, quickly passing both the winner and Power in Numbers after the wire. He didn’t sell for that much at auction, but has a nice pedigree full of quality runners. Furthermore, Linda Rice is 10 for 30 (33%, $2.66 ROI) with maiden second time starters going form sprints to dirt routes over the past 5 years. The other horse that I want to use prominently is Egypt (#2). This second time starter is coming back on short rest, having debuted last Saturday. Yet Horacio De Paz is a strong 11 for 36 (31%, $3.04 ROI) with maiden second time starters on dirt over 5 years. That was a strong race for the level, and he was off slowly before belatedly making up ground through the lane. This son of Tiznow feels like one that is supposed to get better with added ground and he figures to be a square price.

      Ashley Anderson

Multiple graded stakes winner Kathleen O. will square off with Grade 3 champ Midnight Stroll and five other fillies and mares in Saturday’s Royal Delta S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

Below we offer a full field analysis and provide our best exotics plays — including exacta, trifecta, and superfecta tickets — for the 1 1/16-mile event for females four years old and up.
      Royal Delta S. selections

      #5 Classy Edition (3-2)
      #2 Kathleen O. (7-5)
      #3 Midnight Stroll (6-1)

      Royal Delta S. wagers

      $10 Exacta: 5 with 2 ($10)
      $5 Trifecta: 5 with 2 with 3, 7 ($10)
      $2 Superfecta: 5 with 2 with 3, 7 with 1, 3, 7 ($8)

Bet live racing at Gulfstream Park

#1 Don’t Get Khozy (20-1): Racing at sprint distances in nine of her 10 starts in 2022, the six-year-old mare stretched out to a mile and tried turf for the second time in her 2023 debut, in which she finished a distant eighth while posting a 79 Brisnet Speed figure in the Sunshine Filly and Mare Turf S. at this track. The closer has tried 8 1/2 furlongs once, coming home three lengths behind in third in the Wayward Lass at Tampa Bay Downs back in January 2022. Trainer Elizabeth Dobles is a 17% winner this meet but strikes at just a 9% rate with horses transitioning from turf to dirt and an 11% rate in graded stakes. Jockey Miguel Vasquez will inherit the ride and is 2-for-4 paired with Dobles over the last two months.

#2 Kathleen O. (7-5): Fifth to Secret Oath by four lengths in last year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1), Kathleen O. went on a six-month break before finishing a half-length in second as the favorite in the 1 1/18-mile Comely S. (G3) at Aqueduct. She’ll make her four-year-old debut here for Shug McGaughey, a 20% winner both at the graded stakes level and with beaten favorites. Regular rider Javier Castellano will stick with the Upstart filly, who posted between 92 and 99 BRIS figures last season, all while running at a mile or farther.

#3 Midnight Stroll (6-1): Coming off a more than three-month layoff, Midnight Stroll will make her first start as a four-year-old for trainer John Terranova, just a 4% winner in his last 47 graded stakes. The Not This Time filly triumphed by a head in the 1 1/16-mile Delaware Oaks (G3) three back and clocked a 96 BRIS rating in the process, then turned in a pair of third-place finishes when cutting back to seven furlongs in the Charles Town Oaks (G3) and Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland. Edgard Zayas, a 20% winner with routes, will pick up the mount.

#4 Jungle Juice (20-1): The Irish-bred seven-year-old finished five lengths back in sixth after holding a lead through the second call in a one-mile and 70-yard handicap on Gulfstream’s Tapeta in late January and will switch back to dirt while stretching out a bit in distance. In her two races prior, the pacesetter recorded 64 and 73 Speed figures while finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, by a combined 36 lengths in allowance optional claimers at Churchill Downs and Keeneland. She’s 0-for-3 at today’s distance and went 1-for-8 in 2022, with two second-place finishes and a third. Trainer Anna Meah is a 6% winner with horses making their second start off a layoff and a 7% winner with runners transitioning from all-weather to dirt. Shaun Bridgmohan is named to ride.

#5 Classy Edition (3-2): The Classic Empire filly romped to a 5 1/4-length victory in a one-mile allowance optional claimer last out and will move up in class for trainer Todd Pletcher, a 26% winner this meet. The well-bred bay will re-oppose Kathleen O. who beat her by two lengths in the Davona Dale (G2) at this track last March. Classy Edition then finished fourth by 3 3/4 lengths in the 1 1/8-mile Gazelle (G3) in April, before hitting the shelf for the rest of 2022. The Pletcher runner appeared sharp in her four-year-old debut and flashed a 100 Speed rating in her victory last month, good for the highest last race Speed rating among the field and the fastest dirt Speed figure among the group. Hot jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. will return to ride the filly and is 7-for-10 paired with Pletcher over the last 14 days.

#6 Soul of an Angel (30-1): Another four-year-old in the field, the Medaglia d’Oro granddaughter was a distant seventh at last asking when racing 1 1/2 miles on Gulfstream’s turf. She’ll return to dirt and cut back in distance for trainer Gerald James, a 7% winner this meet who has won just 3% of his last 89 races at a route distance. Jockey Jose Morelos will replace Bridgmohan, who opted to ride Jungle Juice. Soul of an Angel registered Speed figures of 78 and 80 in her last two, and the closer is 1-for-7 at today’s distance as well as 2-for-14 at Gulfstream.

#7 Tap Dance Fever (5-1): A five-year-old Tapiture mare, Tap Dance Fever won by a head in the 2023 edition of the Wayward Lass last out, finishing with a 95 Speed rating at 1 1/16 miles while collecting a second consecutive win. She’ll move up to Grade 3 level here, although she beat a Grade 1-placed rival in Pass the Champagne in her latest. Conditioner Gerald Bennett is a 23% winner with horses making their third start off a layoff, and she will keep jockey Jose Ferrer, who’s winning at a 25% clip this meet. Tap Dance Fever has never raced at Gulfstream, but she owns a 9-3-1-0 record at today’s distance.

The Jury: Bets and fades for Feb. 18
        TwinSpires Staff

James Scully, Vance Hanson, and Ashley Anderson reconvene to deliberate on an excellent day of racing from coast to coast, highlighted by Louisiana Derby Preview Day at Fair Grounds.
        What is your best bet?

James Scully: #2 Run Classic (10-1) in the Mineshaft (G3) at Fair Grounds. A sharp winner in a pair of one-turn starts last fall, Run Classic has dropped three consecutive efforts at two turns, including a fourth in the Jan. 21 Louisiana (G3), and he seems destined to cut back at some point this season. But the 1 1/16-mile Mineshaft lacks the pace of the Louisiana, with no true speed types entered in the nine-horse field, and that provides a tactical advantage for Run Classic, who has registered triple-digit Brisnet E1 and E2 Pace ratings in recent starts. The five-year-old is well-drawn to the inside with new rider Reylu Gutierrez, and I’ll tab Run Classic on the front end.

Vance Hanson: Provided the Colonel Power S. at Fair Grounds stays on the turf as scheduled, and the weather forecast suggests there's no reason why it shouldn't, #4 Pyron (10-1) deserves a look to repeat in the about 5 1/2-furlong turf dash at a nice price. The seven-year-old ran two solid races over this course last winter, including an upset win over odds-on favorite Just Might in the Colonel Power. While his subsequent form in Kentucky and Virginia was rather ugly, Pyron tends to run much better in New Orleans and will offer value here.

Ashley Anderson: #2 Nimitz Class (5-1) won by a half-length last out at 1 1/16 miles, the same distance from which he’ll run in the John B. Campbell S. at Laurel Park on Saturday. The Munnings colt recorded a 98 Brisnet Speed rating in the process while beating a handful of today’s rivals and earned his second win from three tries at 8 1/2 furlongs. Trainer Bruce Kravets is a 15% winner with horses that won their last race and a 20% winner this meet. Jockey Jevian Toledo will stick with the colt, opting to stay with the four-year-old over #3 Treasure Trove (6-1). Nimitz Class has also posted a pair of sharp workouts ahead of this race and can upset #5 Ournationonparade (3-1), who has failed as the favorite in his last three starts.

Who is the horse to fade?

JS: Grade 2 winners Ginobili (5-2) and West Will Power (2-1), the top two choices on the morning line in the Razorback (G3) at Oaklawn Park, are vulnerable in my estimation. The frontrunners will ensure a favorable setup for #2 Law Professor (7-2), who invades from New York off a sharp score in the Jan. 7 Queens County S. at Aqueduct. The stalker’s Brisnet numbers are top-notch, and Law Professor enters on the upswing for Rob Atras. Jose Ortiz will be in to ride the top choice.

VH: With 13 rivals to face and no guarantee of an easy lead from an outside draw, I'll take a stand against morning line favorite #13 Victory Formation (3-1) in the Risen Star (G2). Although the Brad Cox barn has been running hot all winter, including victories in the first two Kentucky Derby (G1) preps at Fair Grounds, Victory Formation's seeming one-dimensional style might encounter difficulties here, especially as he stretches out to 1 1/8 miles against a fairly salty field. He's simply unattractive at the expected price.

AA: #1 Panther Island (7-2) is a lukewarm favorite among an overflow field of 14 (with two also-eligibles) in the five-furlong Turf Dash S. at Tampa Bay Downs. The Speightstown colt finished a nose second in a five-furlong allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream Park last out while trained by Ruben Gracida, but new trainer Laura Cazares is just an 8% winner in non-graded stakes and a 4% winner with shippers. Panther Island’s most recent Speed figure (90) is also lower than the par winning Speed figure for today’s conditions, and a number of rivals appear suited for an upset here. Among them are #4 The Critical Way (5-1), who can improve with the cutback in distance, #3 Fluid Situation (6-1), for high-percentage trainer John Terranova and hot jockey Samy Camacho, and #8 County Final (6-1), who came home fifth by two lengths in the five-furlong Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint (G3) last out.

        What else is worth noting?

JS: I respect the chances of #5 Harlocap and #13 Victory Formation in Saturday’s Risen Star, which anchors a $500,000 guaranteed All-Stakes Pick 5 pool at Fair Grounds, but they look like quality speed types who are eligible to set the table for a horse who can finish. #8 Tapit’s Conquest fits the bill and can’t be dismissed, but I’ve landed on an improving colt at long projected odds, #12 Crupi (15-1). The late-running son of Curlin exits a fast race, easily registering the top last-out Brisnet Speed rating (98), and was up against it pace-wise versus Slip Mahoney, who displayed outstanding courage to deny his rival by a head. Crupi will move forward off the strong showing for two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher.

VH: Oaklawn Park's sixth race, a 1 1/16-mile first-level allowance for three-year-olds, could yield a surprising contender in #8 Ben's Legacy (10-1). A dual starter at the meet already, Ben's Legacy bounced back from a debut third to break his maiden by 1 1/4 lengths last month going six furlongs, which netted him a competitive 92 Brisnet Speed rating. The stretch-out to two turns doesn't figure to pose a problem from a pedigree perspective as he's a More Than Ready full brother to champion turf mare Rushing Fall.

AA: Unbeaten three-year-old #2 Hoosier Philly (6-5) may be positioned for an upcoming Kentucky Derby prep depending on her performance in Saturday’s Rachel Alexandra (G2) at Fair Grounds. The Tom Amoss pupil opened as the slight morning line favorite over Brad Cox trainee #4 Chop Chop (8-5), who failed as the favorite in her last two starts, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Silverbulletday S. While the spotlight is on Hoosier Philly, who closed as an 11-1 choice in Pool 4 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, Chop Chop may see improvement with first-time blinkers, and longshot #6 Miracle (12-1) is one to keep an eye on in her first start for Todd Pletcher. The Mendelssohn daughter finished a length second in the Maid of the Mist S. at Aqueduct last out while trained by Rodolphe Brisset, but she may be a whole new filly coming off a more than three-month layoff while under the care of Pletcher, a 23% winner with horses making their first start with the trainer. The pacesetter posted a sharp four-furlong workout ahead of this event, and she’s the lone speed in this race, with a chance to gain an early lead while breaking from the outside. John Velazquez is named to ride and strikes at a 23% rate with route distances.

          RACE

          Race 2

          CONTENDERS

          4-2-1-8

          ANALYSIS

Morning line favorite #4 El Lucerito (6-5) was 31-1 on debut and just missed after leading a long way, run down in the final stages by favored Runaldo, who was well beaten last night in his follow-up. You won’t get 31-1 this time, but a repeat of that should make him a winner tonight… The chart doesn’t entirely tell the tale of the debut race for #2 Court Tudor (20-1). This one walked out of the gate and was last a long way in the early going before making a sharp move into the fast part of the race and finally flattening out. Not a great debut by any means but better than it looked and perhaps a useful education. He get blinkers on tonight, and a sharper break could make a world of difference… #1 O’Rigsby (6-1) makes his debut here for owner-breeder-trainer Elizabeth Meehan. The work tab’s not bad, and this one is a son of Upstart, who stands for $30,000… Useful enough first outing for #8 Born to Sin (4-1). It’s been a bit of a slow start to the season for Tim Grams’s barn, but you know they’ll start to heat up sooner or later…

          Race 5

          1-3-8-4

Top choice #1 C R’s Mandate (9-2) had a couple of outstanding efforts in the fall, winning the WVBC Onion Juice (at 26-1) and the finishing less than a length behind Muad’dib in the Funkhouser Memorial at 34-1. His first start of this season wasn’t bad and could presage a return to his best form. If so, he’ll rate an upset chance tonight… If he is to score the upset, he could probably use an off night from morning line favorite #3 Coastal Mission (3-5). This Jeff Runco trainee has won his last two with ease, and his only defeat in four local tries came going 4 1/2 furlongs in the Coin Collector, not his best game. He’s a handful on best… We’re inclined to give another crack to #8 Monaasib (15-1). He didn’t run well last time out, but that was his first local try, first night race, and first on a bullring. The experience can’t hurt and could help… #4 Sargent Kobe (12-1) won nicely last out and arrives in good form…

            2023 Fair Grounds Stakes Cheatsheet

            February 17, 2023

            By Vance Hanson (TwinSpires)

            1. TIZ THE BOMB (9-2) – Negative Kentucky Derby (G1) experience perhaps had some longer term effects as he didn’t perk up on the return to turf in New York over the summer; did show great promise on the surface as a juvenile, winning a pair of stakes before finishing second to the world class champion Modern Games in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1); better season might be in the offing after some shelf time and regrouping, though lack of a recent race undoubtedly a concern in his return here.

            2. TWO EMMYS (3-1) – Although he threw a clunker in this event last season, no questioning his overall back class advantage with a Grade 1 score in 2021 and a huge win in the Muniz Memorial (G2) over this course a year ago; comeback effort in the Colonel E.R. Bradley S. was very solid, given he hadn’t run since June, plus the closer-friendly course was playing favorable to a Gentle Soul type; the margin was small, however, there is a four-pound weight shift in his favor, and he figures to be more fit with that prep behind him; dangerous.

            3. CAVALRY CHARGE (6-1) – Winless since turning in a shocking 35-1 upset of this race last year, but there’s reason to hope for better this time; third in the Muniz was a decent follow-up and second to G1 class Ivar at Indianapolis was also strong; the only knock is that he was ineffective over Churchill’s new turf last summer and, frankly, a lot of horses struggled to adapt to it; back on ground we know he likes, he deserves consideration for a share or more.

            4. GENTLE SOUL (7-2) – Although an all-or-nothing type so far, he certainly likes this course having won three of four over it; the one misstep, in the Diliberto Memorial, was forgivable as he was too forwardly placed over a course that played toward closers; that bias was still in existence when he rallied to edge Two Emmys in the Colonel Bradley; the price won’t be as nice here, but repeat certainly possible given his fondness for the local sod.

            5. ENGLISH TAVERN (8-1) – Second best in the Diliberto Memorial to Spooky Channel, who had plenty of back class but was coming off of a very long layoff, and last time simply didn’t fire in the Colonel Bradley despite the presence of an outside closing bias; seemingly a cut below rivals like Two Emmys and Gentle Soul based on that effort, so in tough again in this spot.

            6. PIXELATE (8-1) – Grade 2 veteran has run well over this course in the past, though frustrating string of seconds is a minor knock against; a little unlucky in his return from a longer break last summer, attempting to overcome a slow pace and traffic, but it was a good try and evidence he might be able to fresh in this spot for a barn enjoying a strong 26% meet; some things to like.

            7. CORELLI (8-1) – Eight-year-old was favored to win a Jan. 28 conditioned allowance at Gulfstream in his first race in 14 months, but not surprising he proved short when finishing a distant third; figures to move forward some off that tightener, and does have some back class to rely on having won the Singspiel (G3) and Henry Clark S. in his last full season of competition; lower rungs of the exotics might be a more realistic outcome, however.

            8. BAY STREET MONEY (6-1) – Since joining the Maker barn last summer, he’s knocked out his first two allowance conditions and finished a solid third when attempting to pass his third at Gulfstream while facing some stakes veterans; the latter was quick enough to suggest he can fit in this spot, and the extra furlong of this race figures to benefit his closing style; in the mix for a share or more.

Laurel Park Spot Plays for Feb. 18
              John Mucciolo

A total of six stakes races, two of the graded variety, will highlight a big day of racing at Laurel Park on Saturday.
              Race 4 – Miracle Wood S.

The one-mile test for sophomores attracted seven. #1 Feeling Woozy (6-1) showed marked improvement in his latest assignment with the addition of both Lasix and blinkers, and the Irish War Cry gelding can’t be taken lightly in this spot. The Hamilton Smith pupil passed his route debut with aplomb most recently, and he looks like the main danger to the favorite under regular pilot Angel Cruz.
              Race 6 – John B. Campbell S.

A well-matched cast of 10 will vie in the 1 1/16-mile endeavor. #6 Shake Em Loose (10-1) has run some of his best races on this surface and gets the slight nod in the event. The dark bay son of Shakin It Up came off of an eight-month absence to finish a fine second in his return while recording a lifetime best Brisnet Speed figure in the process. The four-year-old bagged the Private Terms S. on the surface and at the distance last season, and he rates a big chance on Saturday with expected improvement under Jean Alvelo.
              Race 8 – Barbara Fritchie S. (G3)

The seven-furlong dirt sprint boasts a nice field of eight with multiple betting options in the affair. John Terranova’s #6 Union Lake (3-1) capped her sophomore season with a facile allowance victory at Aqueduct and I will give her the nod while she makes her 2023 debut. The Speightster filly is Grade-2 placed and has run well in all but one career endeavor to date, and she has the early speed to be up close early in a field lacking a plethora of pace. Eric Cancel will ride.

              Race 9 – General George S. (G3)

A deep field of eight will vie in the six-furlong dash, and I will look to the outside with #8 Factor It In (5-2) for the victory. The Carlos Mancilla trainee is something of a course specialist with eight wins in his 12 outings on the course, including two fine tallies in succession leading up to Saturday. The gray seven-year-old can run from on or off the pace with equal effectiveness, and the outside draw seems perfect for this tilt. Angel Cruz rides.

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (February 18)

Saturday’s racing is at Seoul with 11 races from 10:40 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

                Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

                (10) LEGAL HIGH is the most experienced of these with five starts behind her and she looks to be working towards a win. Her last outing was her best when a close 2nd over 1300M having been handy throughout. The draw is a touch wide, but she may just prove too good. (4) THUNDER BLUE raced once last summer without distinction, but looked much better when reappearing six months later on January 15th when he was handy throughout and came home 2nd over this distance. He should have come on for that run and is firmly in this. (12) MR QUALITY led for much of his debut race on January 14th, ultimately having to settle for 2nd place. He is done no favours by the draw here but with a touch of luck at the start should be in it a long way again. (3) ZEROBAEKFOUR improved considerably last time out and along with (9) FLY DAY is another worth thought.
Selections (10) Legal High (4) Thunder Blue (12) Mr Quality (3) Zerobaekfour
                Next Best 9, 2
                Fast Start 5, 7, 10, 12

                Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 million

Three-year-old maiden fillies. A few of them come in looking ready to win but (1) DONGHAENG FIRST gets the decision. Having run 4th on debut over 1000M she stepped up to this distance on January 15th and ran 3rd, having sat handy throughout. The time was quicker than any of the others have achieved at this distance and she draws very nicely in the inside gate. (3) NAOL HAENGBOK has a 2nd and a 4th from her two appearances, both times having raced on the pace. She draws much better than she did last time and can be a danger here. (11) CUPID CHAMP overcame a similarly wide gate to run 3rd over 1300M on January 8th. She’s raced well on all three occasions so far and with any top-three finish meaning she will be in class 5 next time, it’s not impossible that she could bow out of the bottom level with a win. Those three look the clear best but the two debut-makers, (8) GEUMSEONG REVERE and (7) BAEKPYO both hinted at ability when trialling together on January 13th and bold showings are possible.
Selections (1) Donghaeng First (3) Naol Haengbok (11) Cupid Champ (8) Geumseong Revere
                Next Best 7, 10
                Fast Start 1, 3, 7, 8

                Seoul Race 3: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

                (2) NAOL GONI registered his maiden win at start number three over 1300M on January 14th, making all. It was not a surprise, based on her his previous two outings and while he is up in class here, he comes down in the weights, draws very nicely, and has every chance of leading all the way again. Slightly more unexpected was (6) GANGHAN QUEEN getting her maiden victory on January 7th, she too leading all the way. She is a front-runner and carries a very light weight here and could measure up at a probable each-way price. (8) DOLBAE has plenty of experience at this level and while she can mix her form, she enters off a strong 2nd place at class and distance a month ago when settling midfield and running on. She is up in the weights but is in the frame. (5) CLAIR BEST and (4) ALL FOR YOUR DREAM are others who may enter the calculations.
Selections (2) Naol Goni (6) Ganghan Queen (8) Dolbae (5) Clair Best
                Next Best 4, 1
                Fast Start 2, 5, 6, 8

                Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies and mares only here and for once, (7) THE FAVORITE will be exactly that. And a warm one too having beaten a few of these on her way to 2nd place in a very similar race over 1300M on January 29th when settling in midfield and running on strongly. The additional half-furlong can be in her favour and at start fourteen, she can finally make the breakthrough. Should she find one too quick again, it could be (3) QUEEN OF BEST. She does know how to win, having done it on three occasions and enters off a useful class and distance 4th on January 7th when she came from off the pace. An apprentice claim takes her weight down and she can be considered. (1) GREEN FEELSTAR was one of those behind The Favorite last month when going right back and running on too late. Coming back up to 1400M may suit. (12) V QUEEN and (8) TROT QUEEN among the minor money hopes.
Selections (7) The Favorite (3) Queen Of Best (1) Green Feelstar (12) V Queen
                Next Best 8, 4
                Fast Start 3, 7, 8, 9

                Seoul Race 5: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                (4) GIPPEUM HWANHO took a very narrow win over 1200M at class 5 level on January 15th. It was his maiden score but it came after three consecutive runner-up finishes and while he is up in class here, he comes down significantly in the weights he draws well, and he can win again. (11) GANA FASHION is the principal danger. She won at class and distance in December before dropping back to 1200M and finishing 5th of twelve on January 14th. She carries 3kg more than when she won but the wide draw shouldn’t be problematic and she has a chance. (12) K N SKETCH has run consistently good times at this distance and also holds a win at it. He comes up 2kg from his latest but is another who won’t be perturbed by the wide gate and can be working home well. (5) WOLF PLAY and (10) BODY STAR among other placing chances.
                Selections (4) Gippeum Hwanho (11) Gana Fashion (12) K N Sketch (5) Wolf Play
                Next Best 10, 2
                Fast Start 4, 5, 7, 11

                Seoul Race 6: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                (9) GIANT KILLING registered his third career win on January 14th settling midfield and finishing strongly over this class and distance. He comes up a full 3.5kg in the weights as a result, but he is favoured to strike again here. The logical second pick is (4) IRON MUSKET. It’s been a while since the most recent of her three wins but her recent form reads well and from a nice draw, she can sit just behind the early speed and challenge late under a light weight. (1) RAON THE TIGER comes back in trip and should be better for it. He has run good times at this distance and David Breux climbing aboard is in his favour. (10) GOLD POWER and (5) GREEN JILJU are others who can enter at least the placing calculations.
Selections (9) Giant Killing (4) Iron Musket (1) Raon The Tiger (10) Gold Power
                Next Best 5, 3
                Fast Start 2, 7, 9, 11

                Seoul Race 7: Class 4 (1800M) Special Weight B / KRW 60 Million

                (4) SAENAE TOWN won the Listed NACF Chairman’s Trophy last November before closing out his juvenile campaign as a beaten favourite behind Gana Fashion over 1400M in early December. He has had a couple of months off since then and while he makes the big step up to two-turns, his races so far have suggested that the longer distances can suit and he can make a statement on the Classic trail here. (12) ACHIM GISANG won four of six before injury kept her off the track for fifteen months. She has run well in four starts since returning last November, fishing no worse than 4th, and she too comes up to this distance for the first time with decent claims. (1) KING SIMBA flew home wide from off the pace to win on the line over 1700M at class 5 level on January 29th. He comes up in class here but down in the weights and he can measure up. (10) ONE PUTT and (9) CHEON GUN others in the hunt.
Selections (4) Saenae Town (12) Achim Gisang (1) King Simba (10) One Putt
                Next Best 9, 6
                Fast Start 2, 3, 4, 12

                Seoul Race 8: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Tricky race. (7) HIGH RUNNER comes up to this trip for the first time having demonstrated good form up to 1400M. She has proved versatile in her running style and under a light weight and with Moon Se-young aboard, today could be her day. (5) DAESARI is already a class and distance winner having prevailed in a similar race back in December before running fairly for 3rd and 5th in two tries around two turns. While he carries 3kg more than when he won, an apprentice takes the edge off the weight today and from a good draw, he looks firmly in this. (1) TIZ BLACK comes in off a strong 4th place at class and distance on January 15th when he led for most of the way. He comes down slightly in the weights, draws very nicely on the inside and third-up this preparation, he may be peaking fitness wise. The up in class pair of (6) SURE WIN and (9) E-DANAEUN among others to take note of.
Selections (7) High Runner (5) Daesari (1) Tiz Black (6) Sure Win
                Next Best 9, 3
                Fast Start 1, 6, 7, 9

                (3) WONDERFUL KITTY is the one to beat here. She may only have won twice in thirteen starts but she has been a model of consistency with eleven top-three finishes including an excellent 3rd in the in the Jeju Governor’s Cup behind only Wish Me and Raon First. She carries a light weight, she draws a good gate, and while this is her first try around two turns, she may take some beating. Also very consistent is (2) QUICKLY RUN, who has finished in the top-three in all seven of her races so far. She comes up in class and in distance here following an on pace 2nd over a mile on January 7th but comes down a full 5kg in the weights and she can be dangerous here. (6) TROTTING RILEY has underwhelmed in his latest two but has placed at this class. An apprentice takes his weight down here and he can be given another chance. (7) YEOLRIN MUN and (5) WINNER BLUE others in the placing frame.
Selections (3) Wonderful Kitty (2) Quickly Run (6) Trotting Riley (7) Yeolrin Mun
                Next Best 5, 8
                Fast Start 2, 3, 6, 11

                Seoul Race 10: Class 2 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

Competitive race. (1) MONSTER K had a poor day at the office over 1200M on Christmas Eve, sitting handy but weakening. He has run some fast times over this trip and two starts back ran 2nd at this class over a mile. He carries his fair share of weight today but from the inside gate can be on pace and return to winning ways. (5) LORD BAN has similarly run fast times at the trip including a very fast one alongside plenty of these on January 15th when the track was very wet and lightning quick. He should be on the speed here and can be in this a long way. (2) PARK WIN got a long way back in that January 15th race and such were the conditions, had little opportunity to make ground. He draws better today and can be given another chance. (6) NIMUI HYANGGI was the longest shot on the board in that January 15th race but defied that and a wide draw to run a super 2nd. He warrants more respect here. (9) MORNING HILL another place chance.
Selections (1) Monster K (5) Lord Ban (2) Park Win (6) Nimui Hyanggi
                Next Best 9, 3
                Fast Start 1, 3, 5, 9

                Seoul Race 11: Class 2 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

Another wide-open race to finish with. (9) COSMO just about gets the nod given her consistency that has seen her win four from nine and never finish outside the top-five. She tackles class 2 for the first time but she carries a light weight and she can be qual to the challenge. (10) SEUNGBUSA hasn’t quite managed to live up to his early promise but there is no doubting his talent and he finds himself in against softer company than he has faced of late. Improvement is possible. (7) BYEOLNARA SINSA and (5) CLEANUP SHINE will both need a line drawn through their latest in quick and wet conditions on January 15th. Both are capable of better than that cand can be considered here. (6) RAON PINK is the wildcard. She returns after three months out and looked well in a January trial. Her 2022 was mostly a write-off due to injury but at anything like her best she is in this.
Selections (9) Cosmo (10) Seungbusa (7) Byeolnara Sinsa (5) Cleanup Shine
                Next Best 6, 3
                Fast Start 5, 8, 9, 10

Fair Grounds $500K Guaranteed All-Stakes Pick 5 Headlines Card

                  February 17, 2023 | By Dustin Fabian
The Road to the Triple Crown makes a stop in Louisiana this Saturday at the Fair Grounds for the Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes, which headlines a monster 13-race card that features six star-studded stakes events. Action gets underway at 1:00PM ET, with the Risen Star slated for Race 13, at 7:14PM ET.

My focus on Saturday is the Fair Ground’s $500K Guaranteed All-Stakes Late Pick 5, which is a non-jackpot-style bet that features 15% takeout.

                  Here’s my approach:

                  Race 9 (5:05PM ET) // $100K Colonel Power S. // About 5 1/2 Furlongs (Turf)

This is a tough race to handicap as 6-of-14 entrants are marooned on the ‘also eligible’ list, meaning they won’t get in unless there is a scratch from the main body of the field. Let’s focus on the horses that we know are going to race, and then we can briefly look at those that would be of interest if they draw in. #7 ANGASTON (9/2) is up against it, making just his second start since August 2019 (and his first since June 2021), but he appears to have the early foot to clear this field. I don’t love the layoff, so I’ll also use #1 ICE CHOCOLAT (7/2), #3 ALL IN SYNC (9/2), #4 PYRON (10/1) and #8 SURVEILLANCE (5/2) on the ticket. Of those on the AE list, priority goes to #13 STRAIGHT ANSWER (7/2) and #10 MY PAL MATTIE (5/1), whose presence would turn the field upside down from a pace perspective. He appears to be the quickest early.

                  Race 10 (5:37PM ET) // $250K Mineshaft S. (G3) // 1 1/16 Miles (Dirt)

With more popular connections, you’d think #6 HAPPY AMERICAN (7/2) would be a much shorter choice, given he has won two straight over this strip with solid speed figures. This field is slightly deeper than those last two races, as #7 PIONEER OF MEDINA (9/2) ships in from Gulfstream and Ohio Derby/Lexington winner #3 TAWNY PORT (4/1) makes his seasonal debut. PIONEER OF MEDINA is a clear threat to wire this field, especially with Luis Saez in the irons and gets the nod from me over HAPPY AMERICAN.

                  Race 11 (6:09PM ET) // $150K Fair Grounds S. (G3) // About 1 1/8 Miles (Turf)

Have to respect #2 TWO EMMYS (3/1) a lot here. The seven-year-old gelding has historically overachieved and finds a race void of much early speed. He has the ability to dictate this race from start to finish. #4 GENTLE SOUL (7/2) ran him down late in a prep race here on Jan 21 and is 3-for-4 over this turf course. The only blemish came when he was on put on the lead two back. He seems to thrive better when he has a target to chase. #1 TIZ THE BOMB (9/2) is an absolute wildcard as he enters off a long layoff.

                  Race 12 (6:41PM ET) // $300K Rachel Alexandra S. (G2) // 1 1/16 Miles (Dirt)

As one of the early Kentucky Oaks favorites, #2 HOOSIER PHILLY (6/5) is a standout in this group. I do have concerns there, though. She has never raced away from Churchill Downs and has been off approaching three months. I was shocked when #4 CHOP CHOP (8/5) was defeated in the Silverbulletday S. last month at Fair Grounds – turned away by a less heralded stablemate – but the blinkers she adds today may keep her focused late.

                  Race 13 (7:14PM ET) // $400K Risen Star S. (G2) // 1 1/8 Miles (Dirt)

Brad Cox’s fingerprints are all over the top of the ‘Road to the Kentucky Derby’ Leaderboard, with four of the top 11 horses under his care. He sends out three entries in this race and my focus is on his top two chances, #13 VICTORY FORMATION (3/1) and #8 TAPIT’S CONQUEST (6/1). VICTORY FORMATION drew terribly, but has the natural early speed to clear most of his inside rivals. I think he can make the lead if Flavien Prat wants, or he can sit just off a pace set by Determinedly or Harlocap. TAPIT’S CONQUEST nearly ran down Determinedly in an allowance race at Fair Grounds in January despite a very slow early pace. If things heat up on the front end, he’ll be running best late.

                  My Ticket

                  Race 9 : #1 ICE CHOCOLAT, #3 ALL IN SYNC, #4 PYRON, #6 MANNY WAH, #7 ANGASTON, #8 SURVEILLANCE
Race 10: #3 TAWNY PORT, #6 HAPPY AMERICAN, #7 PIONEER OF MEDINA
Race 11: #2 TWO EMMYS, #4 GENTLE SOUL
Race 12: #2 HOOSIER PHILLY, #4 CHOP CHOP
                  Race 13: #8 TAPIT’S CONQUEST, #1 VICTORY FORMATION

                  Ticket Cost: $72 for 50-cents

Frank Carulli: Laurel Park Pick 4 Analysis | Saturday, Feb. 18

                    February 16, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
The stakes will be high once again on Presidents’ Day weekend at Laurel Park. The nine-race card Saturday, Feb. 18, will feature the Grade III Barbara Fritchie and Grade III General George, both at 7F, both carrying a $250,000 purse and both as part of a 50-cent Late Pick 4 wager that shapes up this way:

LRL 7th race (3:27 EST) -- Go deep in the $100,000 Nellie Morse Stakes, the first leg of the Pick 4 sequence. NINETYPERCENTBRYNN is a consistent router, always seems to finish with run and has faced the likes of Grade III winner Leader Of The Band (6-17, $602k), Grade II-placed Tonal Vision (7-27, $301k) and multiple stakes winner Love In The Air (4-13, $313k). Her uncoupled stablemate, PISTOL LIZ ABLAZIN, drew off ‘quickly’ to defeat three next-out winners in her first long-distance test for $40,000 in September. She returned three months later in a 7F stakes, bid 3-wide behind the dueling leaders and flattened out. HYBRID ECLIPSE sustained a wide run to win a stakes race at this distance two back and is 4-for-6 at Laurel Park, but she was no match for the troubled favorite in a rematch at 1-1/8 miles next out. AWARD WANTED arrives in peak form after she ‘swept to command’ in mid-stretch against Maryland-breds in the $75,000 Geisha Stakes on the stretch-out in distance.

LRL 8th race (3:58 EST) -- UNION LAKE didn’t duplicate her troubled third-place finish against multiple graded stakes winner Wicked Halo (6-11, $870k) when she ran 7F for the first time two starts ago. But she bounced back with an impressive allowance victory, pressing favorite Rossa Veloce (8-24, $421k) into her first loss in the last four tries. She won geared down and is today’s Pick 4 solo play in the Grade III Barbara Fritchie Stakes.

LRL 9th race (4:29 EST) -- BEREN has seven stakes wins, spanning four tracks and four distances, including the DeFrancis Dash at Laurel Park. If he doesn’t scratch for another spot as he did before the January 21 Fire Plug Stakes here, expect him to make a run at his first graded-stakes victory in the General George. FACTOR IT IN held off a late charge by BEREN to win the 6F Dave’s Friend stakes, part of a stakes three-peat at a track where he is 8-for-12. Laurel Park lover Eastern Bay returns after two graded stakes placings at Aqueduct, including a near miss in the Grade III Bold Ruler, a race that produced four next-out winners (average 95 Beyer). His trainer, Norm Cash, also sends out: PIRATE RICK, the beaten favorite in the Grade III Toboggan at Aqueduct after he reeled off four consecutive wire-to-wire allowance wins by a combined 17 lengths; and SIR ALFRED JAMES, who posted a 100 Beyer speed figure when he won a 7F stakes around two turns at Charles Town. Don’t sleep on YODEL E.A. WHO, who rallied from far back to finish second to FACTOR IT IN and appears well suited for the distance.

Jon White: Remembering Bacharach, Derby Top 10, Risen Star Picks

                      February 15, 2023 | By Jon White
World-famous songwriter and longtime enthusiastic racehorse owner and breeder Burt Bacharach died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles on Feb. 8. He was 94.

Winner of multiple Academy Awards and Grammy Awards, plus a 1971 Eclipse Award for television achievement, Bacharach wrote or co-wrote seven No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Think of this. Bacharach wrote or co-wrote a No. 1 song in four different decades, the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 2000s, a phenomenal achievement.

                      The No. 1 songs were:

1968 THIS GUY’S IN LOVE WITH YOU -- Herb Alpert

1970 RAINDROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY HEAD -- B.J. Thomas

1970 (THEY LONG TO BE) CLOSE TO YOU -- Carpenters

1981 ARTHUR’S THEME (BEST THAT YOU CAN DO) -- Christopher Cross

1986 THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR -- Dionne Warwick & Friends (Elton John, Gladys Knight & Stevie Wonder)

1986 ON MY OWN -- Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald

2004 SLOW JAMZ -- Twista feat. Kanye West & Jamie Foxx

In the obituary Duane Byrge wrote for Billboard.com, he noted that Bacharach, “a musical maestro,” was “behind 52 Top 40 hits including ‘Alfie,’ ‘Walk On By,’ ‘Promises, Promises,’ ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,’ ‘What the World Needs Now is Love’ and ‘Do You Know the Way to San Jose.’

“Working with lyricist partner Hal David, Bacharach and David were dubbed the ‘Rogers & Hart’ of the 1960s, with a unique style featuring instantly hummable melodies and atypical arrangements that folded in everything from jazz and pop to Brazilian grooves and rock.”

Of the hundreds of songs Bacharach wrote or co-wrote, his favorite, he once said, was “Alfie.”

In addition to the songs mentioned above, some of my own personal favorites are “The Look of Love,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Making Love” and “Heartlight.”

Bacharach was born on May 12, 1928, in Kansas City, Mo. The family moved to Queens, N.Y., in 1932. That’s where Bacharach began taking piano lessons in elementary school.

“People always think I was a child prodigy on the piano, that I just couldn’t wait to sit down and practice,” Bacharach was quoted as saying in the Los Angeles Times’ obituary written by Dennis McClellan. “But you want to know the truth? I hated it. In fact, I only did it to please my mother. She was the one who encouraged me.”

Bacharach first became interested in Thoroughbred racing as a teenager, as noted in his 2013 autobiography “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” written in collaboration with Robert Greenfield.

“My interest in horse racing started when I was 14 or 15 and one of my mother’s friends, Edith Friedman, took me to Jamaica Race Track in Queens,” Bacharach wrote. “After that, I started reading Ken Kling’s race selections in the Daily Mirror. I would always look at the paper the next day to see how right he had been, and who the hot jockeys were. So I started to know guys like Eddie Arcaro by name and I thought, ‘If I ever can afford it I’ll own a racehorse.’ ”

Along with Bacharach’s musical talent, he was “handsome and suave,” as Byrge put it.

“Sammy Cahn dubbed him the only composer who didn’t look like a dentist,” Byrge wrote. “His longtime marriage to actress Angie Dickinson fueled that ‘hip’ image.”

Bacharach was such a huge horse racing fan that Hollywood Park came up when, on his birthday, he proposed marriage to Angie Dickinson on May 12, 1965.

“Burt and I were driving on the freeway in L.A. one day and he had just asked me to marry him and I didn’t answer him,” Dickinson recalled in Bacharach’s book.

“You want to give me a nice birthday present?” Bacharach asked.

                      “I’ll try,” she said.

                      Bacharach then again proposed marriage.

Dickinson said that she laughed and, again, didn’t answer him.

“As we were driving,” Dickinson continued, “we saw this billboard for the opening of Hollywood Park and Burt said, ‘You know, the problem with getting married on my birthday is I wouldn’t be able to go to the track.’ It was so funny and adorable and who wouldn’t say yes to that?”

Bacharach did indeed go to Hollywood Park on his birthday. And then Burt Bacharach and Angie Dickinson flew to Las Vegas a couple of days later and got married in the wee hours of the morning.

“It was 3:45 in the morning by the time we got married,” Dickinson said. “If you want to call it a wedding. I mean, it was in a chapel that was also a grocery store. Oh, God, yes. The Silver Bell Chapel.”

Also in his autobiography, Bacharach wrote about how he first became a racehorse owner.

“Eventually I met up with Charlie Whittingham, one of the all-time great trainers,” Bacharach wrote. “I don’t think he would have paid that much attention to me but he liked Angie, so for $15,000, which would be about $45,000 now, Charlie bought me a horse named Battle Royal.”

The day before Bacharach flew to New York to start rehearsals for the play “Promises, Promises,” which had a four-year run on Broadway from 1968-72, Battle Royal made his first start for Bacharach.

“Angie and I went to Hollywood Park to watch Battle Royal run his first race under my colors, blue silks with two music notes on the back,” Bacharach wrote.

Battle Royal won, but just barely in a nail-biting photo finish. Bacharach described the feeling of winning that race as “incredible.”

Laffit Pincay Jr. rode Battle Royal. Bacharach became very good friends with both Pincay and Bill Shoemaker, two of racing’s all-time great jockeys.

In the early 1980s, Bacharach bred and raced Heartlight No. One. The filly was trained by Pedro Marti, a former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Laz Barrera.

Shoemaker rode Heartlight No. One when she made her career debut as a 2-1 favorite in a six-furlong maiden special weight at Santa Anita on Jan. 8, 1983. I put $100 to win on her. Heartlight No. One looked like a pretzel coming out of the starting gate that day. She finished third.

Heartlight No. One did not race again until she won a six-furlong maiden special weight race by seven lengths on June 4. That was the start of a five-race winning streak, all with Pincay aboard.

Off just a maiden sprint victory, Heartlight No, One took a substantial jump in class and stretched out to 1 1/8 miles in the Grade I Hollywood Oaks on the dirt July 10. She crushed her six opponents, winning by 12 lengths.

A couple of days after Heartlight No. One’s scintillating Hollywood Oaks performance, I called Bacharach to interview him about the filly. I was a writer for the Daily Racing Form at the time.

When I placed the call to Bacharach’s office, the receptionist asked me, “What’s this regarding?”

“One of his racehorses,” I replied.

The receptionist put me right through to Bacharach, as if the secret password was “racehorses.” During that first call I ever made to Bacharach, I learned that he was someone who loved talking about his horses.

After the Hollywood Oaks, Heartlight No. One raced on the grass for the first time and won a one-mile allowance race at Del Mar by 6 1/2 lengths on July 28. That was followed by a 3 1/2-length triumph in the Grade II Del Mar Oaks on the turf Aug. 20.

After the Del Mar Oaks, Heartlight No. One was then was sent to New York to take on her elders in the Grade I Ruffian Handicap on the dirt at Belmont Park on Sept. 25.

In his book, Bacharach wrote that Dinny Phipps, “head of The Jockey Club and a really powerful figure in horse racing in New York,” told Bacharach that he could not use his silks as they were because “you’re advertising yourself with the two music notes on the back of your silks.” An irked Bacharach made it clear this did not sit well with him, to say the least.

Phipps ultimately “waived the rule for me,” Bacharach wrote.

Heartlight No. One won the 1 1/8-mile Ruffian by one length. And then, in her final start of the year and her career, she lost the Grade I Beldame Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on the dirt Oct. 16 by a head when finishing second to the older Dance Number.

Voted a 1983 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly, Heartlight No. One was named after “Heartlight,” a Top 10 song recorded by Neil Diamond in 1982. The song was written by Bacharach, Neil Diamond and Carole Bayer Sager.

Years later, Bacharach had back-to-back homebred starters in the Kentucky Derby, both trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. Soul of the Matter finished fifth in the 1994 renewal, which was won by Go for Gin. Afternoon Deelites came in eighth behind the victorious Thunder Gulch the following year.

Soul of the Matter, who battled quarter cracks throughout his racing career, gave win-machine Cigar a mighty scare in the inaugural Dubai World Cup in 1996. Cigar had to work hard to prevail by a half-length.

Santa Anita offered wagering on that first Dubai World Cup. I put $100 to win on Soul of the Matter, who went off at 10-1. Unfortunately for me, Soul of the Matter had to settle for second in probably the finest performance of his career. The Dubai World Cup was one of Cigar’s victories during his remarkable 16-race winning streak.

“We had great times racing, with Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites,” Mandella said after learning of Bacharach’s passing. “We became great friends and we continued that way. He was a great person, a great owner, he couldn’t have been better.”

Bacharach was married four times, first to Paula Stewart from 1953-58, then to Angie Dickinson from 1965-80, then to Carole Bayer Sager from 1982-91, then to Jane Hansen from 1993 until his death. Jane was Bacharach’s wife when Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites started in the Kentucky Derby.

The day that Soul of the Matter ran for the roses in 1994, Bacharach found out in the Churchill Downs paddock that Mandella had not been paid in months. According to Bacharach, his business manager had dropped the ball in terms of paying the trainer.

“After that, I made sure the bills came directly to Jane, who I knew would take care of them properly,” Bacharach said.

Just last month, Bacharach’s light blue silks were in the winner’s circle following a stakes race at Santa Anita. Duvet Day, a 4-year-old Irish-bred filly sent away at odds of 13-1, came roaring from eighth to win the $102,000 Astra Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on the turf Jan. 21 for owners Burt Bacharach, Jane Bacharach and Richard Schatz.

Burt Barachach kindly helped those in need after a horrific 2017 fire in which 47 horses were killed and many people had their lives turned upside down at the San Luis Rey Downs training center in Southern California. Bacharach held a fundraiser in Del Mar.

For many years right up to his death, Bacharach generously supported a number of horse racing causes, such as Old Friends and the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation.

Old Friends is home to many retired racehorses. Afternoon Deelites had the distinction of being the oldest Thoroughbred senior citizen at Old Friends Equine in Kentucky until he was euthanized Tuesday (Feb. 14) due to complications from colic, Old Friends president and founder Michael Blowen announced Wednesday.

Afternoon Deelites’ death came just two weeks shy of his 32nd birthday,

Winner of the Grade I Hollywood Futurity at 2 and Grade I Malibu Stakes at 3 for Bacharach, Afternoon Deelites began his stud career in 1997 at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky. He then moved to Clear Creek Stud in Louisiana for the remainder of his stallion career. When Afternoon Deelites experienced fertility problems related to old age in 2011, he was sent to Old Friends courtesy of Clear Creek Stud’s Val Murrell.

“Thanks to Burt, his ex-wife Angie Dickinson and his widow, Jane, for loving Afternoon Deelites as much as we did,” Blowen said following the horse’s death.

The Gregson Foundation, under the leadership of former trainer Jenine Sahadi, has enhanced the quality of life for backstretch workers and their families at California tracks for many years.

The last time I saw Bacharach was at the Gregson Foundation dinner near Del Mar on Aug. 9, 2010. I had been asked to present an award to Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally that evening. At first, I declined the offer. But emcee Frank Mirahmadi kept after me to do it. And let me tell you, I’m so glad that Frank talked me into it. Attending that function led to a memory that I’ll treasure for as long as I live.

Not long after the awards dinner was over, Frank and I headed to the bar. After a few minutes, Bacharach walked past our table. Bacharach went past us quickly enough to get a big Beyer, yet he managed to say “hi, Jon.”

“Hi, Burt,” I responded in a knee-jerk reaction.

I was stunned. My immediate thought was, “Did the man who co-wrote ‘Walk On By’ just do exactly that?” I honestly was surprised that he even remembered me because I hadn’t seen him in many years.

But it’s what happened a short time later that made that evening truly memorable for me.

There was a piano in a small dining area adjacent to the bar. The piano was locked up. But thank goodness Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith was resourceful enough to find someone to get that piano unlocked.

It was after 11 p.m. as Bacharach sat down and began to play the piano and sing to about 10 of us. Talk about an intimate setting.

One of the several songs Bacharach played that evening was “Alfie.” I know that was one of the songs because I took a video of him singing it with my cell phone.

What made the evening all the more special, Bacharach chatted with us between songs. At one point I mentioned to him that one of his songs had been No. 1 on this very date 40 years ago.

                      “Really? Which one?” he asked.

                      “Close to You,” I said.

“Oh, the Carpenters did a great job with that song,” he said.

“Close to You” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 25, 1970, and stayed in that position for four weeks.

I can still remember one hot evening in the summer of 1970 when I was slowly moving the dial on my transistor radio from one side to the other and heard that song being played on station after station after station.

Back to that magical summer evening in 2010 when Bacharach played and sang for a small number of us, Mike Smith said that he’d always wanted to learn how to play the piano.

“Well, then you should do that,” Bacharach said. “Take lessons, Mike! Why not? It’s never too late to do something like that if it’s something that you really want to do.”

One thing Bacharach made clear in his autobiography was how much he loved being involved in horse racing.

“If you look at the photographs on the walls of my house, I’m always smiling in the pictures taken after one of my horses has won a race,” Bacharach wrote. “For me, this is still one of the greatest thrills in my life.”

And when I was one of the few people lucky enough on a summer night in 2010 to have the great Burt Bacharach play the piano and sing for us, it’s still one of the greatest thrills in my life.

                      KENTUCKY DERBY TOP 10

Cave Rock has returned to my Kentucky Derby Top 10 this week. That’s because he finally had his first published workout of 2023. He worked four furlongs in a crisp :47.80 on Monday (Feb. 13) at Santa Anita.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Cave Rock won a Del Mar maiden sprint at first asking last summer by six lengths. The Kentucky-bred son of Eclipse Award winner Arrogate then won the Grade I Del Mar Futurity by 5 1/4 lengths and the Grade I American Pharoah Stakes by the same margin.

Cave Rock has not started since he finished second as a 2-5 favorite in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on Nov. 4.

I think it’s important that Cave Rock’s first 2023 workout was at four furlongs, not three furlongs. In this respect, he seems to be on about the same schedule, or perhaps even a little ahead of schedule, vis-a-vis American Pharoah’s training early in 2015.

I installed American Pharoah as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a large field of 13 entered in the Grade I BC Juvenile at Santa Anita in 2014. But he was scratched due to a bruised left front foot.

American Pharoah trained at Santa Anita early in 2015 while preparing for his return to the races for Baffert. The colt’s first two 2015 workouts were both at three furlongs. He was timed in :36.20 on Feb. 2, then :36.40 on Feb. 9.

After those two three-furlong drills, American Pharoah worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 on Feb. 15, followed by six furlongs in 1:12.40 on Feb. 21, seven furlongs in 1:23.80 on Feb. 27, then six furlongs in a rapid 1:10.40 on March 6.

With six 2015 workouts under his belt, American Pharoah made his 3-year-old debut in Oaklawn Park’s Grade II Rebel Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on a sloppy track March 14. He won by 6 1/4 lengths.

American Pharoah returned to Oaklawn and won the Grade I Arkansas Derby by eight lengths at 1 1/8 miles April 11, then swept the Triple Crown to end an agonizingly long 37-year drought in the coveted series.

Based on the American Pharoah model, it appears to me that Cave Rock still has time -- but just barely -- to be able to run in the Kentucky Derby on May 6. However, it appears that if Cave Rock has even the slightest hiccup along the way, he won’t be ready in time for the 1 1/4-mile classic.

My Kentucky Derby Top 10 for this week is below:

                      1. Arabian Knight
                      2. Forte
                      3. Banishing
                      4. Tapit Trice
                      5. Cave Rock
                      6. Instant Coffee
                      7. Geaux Rocket Ride
                      8. Hejazi
                      9. Reincarnate
                      10. Verifying

Bubbling Under My Top 10 (in alphabetical order):

Angel of Empire, Arctic Elegance, Blazing Sevens, Carmel Road, Curly Jack, Damon’s Mound, Disarm, Dubyuhnell, Eyeing Clover, Faustin, General Jim, Gun Pilot, Hard to Figure, Harlocap, Hit Show, Kingsbarns, Litigate, National Treasure, Please Be Nice, Practical Move, Recruiter, Red Route One, Rocket Can, Shopper’s Revenge, Skinner, Tall Boy, Two Phil’s, Worcester, Victory Formation.

Newgate drops off my Top 10 this week after racing manager Tom Ryan announced via Twitter last week that Newgate has been sidelined with a “minor hock issue” following his win in Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Feb. 4 for Baffert.

Veterinarians have “recommended 60/90 days before resuming training,” Ryan tweeted. “His prognosis to return is excellent. We look forward to seeing him back this summer.”

I’m looking forward to seeing what Banishing will do in a Fair Grounds first-level allowance/optional claiming at 1 1/16 miles on the Risen Star Stakes undercard on Saturday (Feb. 18). He was scratched from a Jan. 21 Fair Grounds race at the same class level and distance due to getting cast in his stall and “requiring sutures to close a hind-leg cut,” according to T.D. Thornton of the Thoroughbred Daily News.

Brendan Walsh trains Banishing, a Kentucky-bred Ghostzapper colt. Obviously I am very high on Banishing, as evidenced by ranking him No. 3 on my Top 10.

Banishing looks like he will be running against a tough foe in First Defender this Saturday. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, First Defender won a Fair Grounds maiden race by 5 1/4 lengths at six furlongs when unveiled on Jan. 21. He was credited with an 83 Beyer Speed Figure. Banishing recorded a 90 Beyer when he won a Fair Grounds maiden special weight race by 8 1/2 lengths at 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 26.

                      RISEN STAR SELECTIONS

A bulky field of 14 is entered in Fair Grounds’ Grade II Risen Star Stakes on Saturday (Feb. 14). The distance is 1 1/8 miles.

Victory Formation, who is three for three, had the misfortunate to draw post 13. Brad Cox trains the Kentucky-bred Tapwrit colt. Victory Formation is coming off a three-length win in Oaklawn Park’s Smarty Jones Stakes at one mile on Jan. 1, a race in which he posted a 90 Beyer Speed Figure.

Cox said this week that he’s not too concerned about Victory Formation’s wide draw.

“I think he should be able to break well and get a good position,” Cox said. “I’m not too worried about the post. He’s very quick from the gate and broke really sharp in all three of his starts.”

Nevertheless, I’m inclined to pick someone other than Victory Formation due to his possibly problematic post position and his expected low odds. He’s the 3-1 morning-line favorite.

I am going with Two Phil’s as my top pick. Two Phil’s, unlike Victory Formation or Risen Star entrant Harlocap, benefits from having raced over Fair Grounds’ main track. Two Phil’s finished second to Instant Coffee (No. 6 on my Top 10) in Fair Grounds’ Grade III Lecomte Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Jan. 21.

Prior to the Lecomte, Two Phil’s splashed home to a 5 1/4-length victory in the Grade III Street Sense Stakes on a sloppy track Oct. 30. Larry Rivelli trains the Kentucky-bred Hard Spun colt.

My selections for the Risen Star Stakes are below:

                      1. Two Phil’s (8-1 morning line)
                      2. Harlocap (8-1)
                      3. Victory Formation (3-1)
                      4. Tapit’s Conquest (6-1)

Harlocap has been shipped to New Orleans from Southern California. He’s also changed trainers from Baffert to Asmussen.

Regarding Harlocap, Asmussen joked this week that “somebody will point out what number he is, and I hope to put the saddle on the right one.”

On a serious note, Asmussen added that Harlocap, who arrived at Fair Grounds on Monday night, “had a huge work the other day,” referring to the colt’s six-furlong drill in 1:11.80 at Santa Anita last Saturday (Feb. 11).

A Kentucky-bred son of Triple Crown winner Justify, Harlocap lost his first two starts, then looked terrific when he won a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race by 4 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita on Jan. 22.

Cox also trains Risen Star entrants Tapit’s Conquest and Angel of Empire.

Tapit’s Conquest finished a close second to Determinedly (likewise entered in the Risen Star) in a second-level Fair Grounds allowance/optional claiming contest on Jan. 21. I think there is a possibility that we have not seen anywhere close to the best from Tapit’s Conquest yet. Cavalierly dismiss him in the Risen Star at your own peril.

And watch out for Angel of Empire. He finished second, three lengths behind Victory Formation, in the Smarty Jones. But I will not be surprised if Angel of Empire relishes going a furlong farther in the Risen Star.

“I think he’s going to like the mile and an eighth based on his physicality, being a big, tall horse with a lot of leg,” Cox said of Angel of Empire this week.

FORTE AGAIN INDIVIDUAL FAVORITE FUTURE WAGER

Just as he was in Pool 2 and Pool 3, Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male Forte was the favorite among 39 individual horses in Pool 4 of Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) when betting closed last Sunday (Feb. 12). His odds were 8-1.

Below are the individual favorites in Pool 1 through Pool 4:

12-1 Extra Anejo (Pool 1 on Nov. 3)
                      10-1 Forte (Pool 2 on Nov. 27)
                      7-1 Forte (Pool 3 on Jan. 22)
                      8-1 Forte (Pool 4 on Feb. 12)

The “all other 3-year-old colts and geldings” option in Pool 4 was backed down to 2-1 actual favoritism. One of the reasons for strong wagering support for this option is the fact that horses currently trained by Baffert were not among the 39 individual horses as a result of the trainer being banned at this time from the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

Horses running for a trainer suspended by Churchill Downs are not eligible to earn qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby. During a two-day hearing held in Louisville on Feb. 2-3, Baffert sought an injunction with respect to the suspension imposed on him by Churchill. As of this writing on Feb. 15, the judge has yet to issue a ruling on the matter. If Baffert’s request for an injunction is denied, the only way for horses currently trained by him to earn Kentucky Derby qualifying points will be for them to be transferred to a different trainer by the end of February.

I wrote last week that if impressive debut winner Geaux Rocket Ride “does end up around 40-1 (his morning-line price), I probably will put some money on him.” Even though his odds turned out to be quite a lot lower at 25-1, I went ahead and put some money on him. I think so much of Geaux Rocket Ride (as so many others evidently did, judging from his surprisingly strong future wagering support) that I just couldn’t resist playing him.

The undefeated filly Hoosier Philly was listed at 50-1 on the morning line in KDFW Pool 4. I wrote last week that “considering how freakishly talented she has looked while winning all three of her starts to date and the way that trainer Tom Amoss has raved about her, I’m inclined to roll the dice [that she might run in the Kentucky Derby] and put a few -- and I mean just a few -- bucks on her at a big price.”

Well, Hoosier Philly ended up being nowhere close to her 50-1 morning line. She closed as the second favorite among individual horses at only 11-1. No way would I consider putting any money on her at such a ridiculously low price when she probably will run in the Kentucky Oaks rather than the Kentucky Derby.

Hoosier Philly is scheduled to make her 2023 debut this Saturday (Feb. 18) in Fair Grounds’ Rachel Alexandra Stakes.

I made three other bets in Pool 4.

I played Banishing at 27-1 after having already put some money on him at that same price in Pool 3.

After Kingsbarns was much the best when winning a Tampa Bay Downs first-level allowance/optional claiming race at one mile and 40 yards by 7 3/4 lengths, I bet him in Pool 4. He closed at 35-1. Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher trains the Kentucky-bred Union Rags colt.

And I was not about to miss the boat with Practical Move at a mouth-watering 83-1 in Pool 4, especially after he fired a bullet five-furlong workout in :59.00 at Santa Anita last Saturday (Feb. 11). Tim Yakteen trains the Grade II Los Alamitos Futurity winner, who is No. 4 in Secretariat.com Steve Haskin’s Derby rankings, below only Forte, Tapit Trice and Arabian Knight.

Practical Move’s “blazing [Feb. 11] workout hinted at a promising 3-year-old season,” Daily Racing Form’s Brad Free wrote.

“Practical Move opened up on Bob Baffert-trained Hejazi on the backstretch, coasted to the finish as the workmate caught up, then rebroke after the wire,” Free added.

Yakteen said he wasn’t expecting Practical Move to have company for the workout.

“He worked absolutely terrific, came home [his final quarter-mile] in :23 flat,” Yakteen told Free. “Fantastic drill. We went three-quarters in 1:11, out [seven-eighths]” in 1:25.

After making a large wager on “all others” in Pool 1 (4-5 odds), Pool 2 (4-5) and Pool 3 (2-1), I did not bet that option at 2-1 this time. The closer we get to the race, the less attractive the “all others” option is to me.

One 3-year-old I’m glad is among the “all others” in Pool 1, Pool 2 and Pool 3 is Skinner, who received a 95 Beyer Speed Figure when winning a one-mile maiden special weight race going away by 3 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita last Sunday (Feb. 12).

Trained by John Shirreffs, Skinner had not started since finishing sixth in the Grade I American Pharoah Stakes last Oct. 8. As a maiden, the Kentucky-bred Curlin colt was good enough to finish third to Cave Rock and National Treasure in the Grade I Del Mar Futurity on Oct. 8.

Churchill Downs, which has offered pari-mutuel future wagering going back to 1999, expanded the number of betting options from 20 to 40 for the 2023 Run for the Roses.

Two more KDFW pools will be conducted this year: Pool 5 (March 10-12) and Pool 6 (March 30-April 1). The lone Kentucky Oaks Future will coincide with KDFW Pool 5.

Below are the final odds reported by Churchill Downs for Pool 4 of the 2023 KDFW:

2-1 All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings
                      8-1 Forte
