Mar 3 Adam Trigger 4% [CBB] (877) Monmouth at (878) Hampton

                        Time: 2:00 PM EST
                        Monmouth +1.5 (-110)
Analysis: Monmouth (2PM ET Flo Sports) – It’s a huge 2-0 sweep on Thursday as Texas State and Western Kentucky both get it done with outright wins. That’s now a 9-1 run in our last 10 and I’ll look to get a busy Friday started early with a matinee tip from the CAA tournament when the Monmouth Hawks take on the Hampton Pirates at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington D.C.
We just backed Monmouth in this matchup last week in a game where the Hawks dug themselves a huge hole but came all the way back to cut it to two before Hampton hit a big shot and held on to win 86-81. Hampton swept the season series against Monmouth but did so with two uncharacteristically good shooting performances which I think will be difficult to replicate for a third time here. Hampton is 1-17 away from home this season with their only road win coming against Monmouth, they have one of the worst field goal percentages in the country and that gets worse when the Pirates hit the road. Hampton is shooting just 39.3 percent as a team this season and this is their first year in the CAA so I’ll be shocked if they roll into a foreign arena and just start hitting shots. Monmouth is atrocious offensively as well but the Hawks rely far less on shot making. Monmouth will get the ball to Myles Foster to let him create but their disjointed offense is largely reliant on turning defense into offense and making hustle plays. I think THAT is going to play here and is going to be what gets Monmouth over the hump in the third meeting between these two teams. Hampton shot out of their minds in the first meeting, in the second meeting they lose if they shoot it any worse and I’m going to trust veteran head coach King Rice to make the necessary adjustments to slow down Hampton which should lead to a Monmouth win.
Let’s look at how big of an outlier the two performances against Monmouth were for Hampton earlier this season. Hampton shot a whopping 58.3 percent in the first meeting which is over TWENTY percentage points higher than their average this season. Hampton is also a dreadful three point shooting team and found a way to go 10 for 19 from three point range in that game. Hampton didn’t shoot quite as well in game two but still shattered their season average by hitting 49.1 percent from the field and most of that was in the first half. Hampton took a 45-40 lead into the break and came out hot to start the second half so it ended up being an uphill climb for Monmouth which is just not how the Hawks want to play or are going to have success. Monmouth hasn’t had many leads this season but when they do get one they tend to play well, mostly because they can slow the game down and try to get to the foul line as opposed to be forced into needing quick baskets to stay in the game. Assuming Hampton trends back to their normal shooting numbers I think we do see Monmouth out in front at some point and this game SHOULD play at the pace/tempo Monmouth wants to play at as opposed to the first two meetings where the Hawks were forced out of their game into catch up mode.
Finally, Monmouth was +2 at Hampton a week ago in a game that, despite Hampton building a huge lead, went down to the wire and was decided in the final minute so I was shocked to see essentially the same number on a neutral floor here. That implies Hampton doesn’t get much of a bump for home court but I think the Pirates should absolutely be docked points on the number when they play away from home since they have lost 17 of their 18 games on a road or neutral court this season. I still think Monmouth is the better of these two teams and have the Hawks undervalued due to their bad start which is explainable since Monmouth is one of the youngest teams in the country this season. Rice has improved this Monmouth team, I make them favorite on a neutral against Hampton and will grab the free +1.5 in a game I think the Hawks find a way to win. Play on Monmouth +1.5 (-110) for 4% (or 4 units)

The Redhawks are far more talented and experienced than the Mavericks. They're 11-2 at home while the Mavs are 4-8 on the road, 5-11 if factoring in neutral site games. This isn't just any home game though. It's Senior Night and the Redhawks will be honoring Riley Grigsby, as well as Emeka Udenyi. Grigsby isn't just any player, as he's played more games for Seattle than any player in Redhawk history. He's near the top in a number of other categories with coach Victor noting: “Obviously he's had just an unbelievable career and will go down as one of the best players in Seattle University history.” The Redhawks aren't going to let Grigsby go out, in front of the home fans, a loser. Not against this team. The fact that they just got blown out, at Utah State, makes the setup even sweeter. Seattle scores 74.7 ppg at home. The Mavs average 60.4 ppg on the road. Seattle is 5-1 ATS (6-0 SU) its past six, as a home favorite in the -3.5 to -6 range. Going back further finds them at 13-4 ATS (15-2 SU) in that role. The Redhawks won the first meeting by 15. I'm expecting another double-digit win.
Line Parameter: Reduce to 3% if higher than -6. No play if higher than -8.
