2^nd race [Md 40000, 1 mi] – (3) Mad Magic (C) has a third and a second in his last two starts. Last time he ran a mile and was bet down from 6-1 to 4-1. (4) Long Term ran in the 2022 Wood Memorial and most recently tried the turf at Gulfstream Park. The Todd Pletcher runner will make his first appearance for a tag. He began his career with four second-place finishes. (8) Pioneering Spirit returns from a June layoff and drops into the maiden claiming ranks as a new gelding also for Pletcher. (7) Stjames was second last time in a similar spot.
4^th race [NY, Alw 72000 N1X, 1 mi] – (3) Agility has his best performances at Aqueduct in allowance and stakes against NY-breds. (6) Amedeus Music exits a second and a win facing open company claimers and returns to state-bred racing. (4) Braciole won his last two starts for $25,000 when he was claimed and then in a starter allowance. (1) Asymmetric returns from another long layoff for Chad Brown. He ran well in all three starts picking up his maiden breaker back in June.
6^th race [Alw 50000s, 1 mi] – (8) Gut Feeling ran second twice in starter allowances after a layoff which came after he was claimed for $50,000 from his maiden score. (6) Labarde broke his maiden for a $40,000 tag and then was third in a race similar to today’s spot. (9) Mandatory was second in a $40,000 claimer after trying first-level allowances four times. (2) Colloquy was claimed for $40,000 following a win over other horses in this field.
7^th race [NY, East View, 6F] – (4) Maple Leaf Mel is unbeaten in two starts which both were at Saratoga in a maiden race and then a NY-bred stake. (7) Les Bon Temps began her career in Kentucky where she won her debut and then was third in stakes race behind champion Wonder Wheel. She won NY-bred stakes and now runs for Linda Rice. (1) Little Linzee is stakes-placed against state-breds and was a debut winner at Saratoga on the grass. (5) Lady Mine has been off since August but was second behind the top choice for a trainer that has excellent stats after long layoffs.
Best bets: Agility (4^th); Maple Leaf Mel (7^th). Best value: Mad Magic (2^nd); Gut Feeling (6^th).

1st race – (5) Cyclone Ranger (B) had a tough trip while racing wide last time. Can rebound here. (7) Mufrih may wake up in a claimer. (8) Norfie could respond to the addition of blinkers. (9) Chacharero should be effective at this level. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-7-8-9..
3rd race – (5) Cloud Storage (C) dropped from 6-5 to 4-5 and lost by a head. Makes amends here. (6) Pawky fell a neck shy and looks like the one to fear. (4) Calling All Angels beat maiden claimers and is worth a look here. (7) Artifact was third in her last two starts and can be in the mix here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6. Exactas: 5-6 with 4-7 and 4-7 with 5-6.
5th race – (9) Neogem was second in her first two starts and is overdue for a maiden win. (8) Mystic Sunrise steps up after a close second and should be the key foe. (1) Strand of Gold could be a factor from the rail. (7) Leipzig might work out a good trip in this field. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-7-8-9.
7th race – (6) Loco Abarrio was a rallying second on Tapeta. Won easily on dirt three starts ago and earns top billing here. (7) Knox should welcome the class relief in a claimer. (5) Easy as A. B. C. moves up in class after two straight wins and is worth a look. (1) Devil’s Cay has speed from the rail and may not look back. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-6-7.
9th race – (1) Hierro clipped heels early and never recovered. Deserves a second chance here. (6) Rhymes Like Dimes was first or second in his last three starts and should be the one to fear. (10) American Power takes a serious class and could be a contender. (9) Here Comes Bullet might fire off the claim. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6-9-10.

Pony Conductor Picks: Gulfstream Park Friday 3/24/23

0-3 Thursday provides a little bump in the track for the Conductor. However, #Gullet Shot of the Day No Ill Will was able to get into the trifecta at a ridiculous 46/1 in the finale. Hopefully some of you passengers were able to hit that juicy tri. Nothing but prices Friday for Mr. Ductor. Let’s head into the weekend loaded with coal. Skip.
Gulfstream Park Race 3: 1 1/16 Mile. (Turf) F.OClm 35000

#3 Miss M M (12/1) – This is an evenly matched field without any standouts. Miss M M is the lone wild card that can jump up and win at a price. She’s exiting two strong efforts sprinting on synthetic and now stretches out on the turf for the 1st time. She ran well in her lone sprint on the turf, so the Conductor is not concerned about the surface. With a comfy trip up close or setting a moderate pace, the Ductor will take a swing.
Gulfstream Park Race 5:1 Mile. (Turf) F.Moc 50000

#4 Lendhercredit (12/1) – This filly has two solid works after moving to the Delgado barn. She debuted sprinting on the dirt and Delgado rightfully moves her to the turf today. She has the best turf breeding in the field. Her dam, Lenatareese, has produced 8 winners from 11 starters, including 5 on the turf. With only a 75k purchase price, the drop to the 50k claiming level doesn’t bother the Conductor. Castellano taking the mount is a positive sign as well.
Gulfstream Park Race 7: 7 Furlongs. OClm 50000

*#8 Canal (8/1) – Another asinine morning line at Gulfstream Park, but the Conductor thinks he’ll get 3/1 on this colt. He ran great last time with a heinous trip going a mile on the turf. He was in the parking lot the entire way around the track and rightfully tired late. Now after moving into the Orseno barn, he shortens in distance and switches back to turf. His best race came at 7 furlongs at Churchill last fall where he won at 7/1. Canal is the Ductor’s best bet on the card.

Friday TimeformUS Highlight Horse: Its Cold in Dehere capable of better off the claim

This $16k claiming event is one of the most competitive races on the card, as it has attracted 12 runners and lacks a standout favorite. The public figures to send some wagering support towards the two runners occupying the post positions furthest from the inner rail. Blue Paynt (#11) makes her first start off the claim for Linda Rice, who is in the midst of an excellent winter meet where she has had plenty of success with new acquisitions. Ruvies in Time (#12) also goes out for a hot barn, that of Rob Atras, for whom she makes her second start off the claim. Ruvies in Time is a classier mare, but she ran poorly in her first start for the new barn last time and has to rebound. She’s not proven going this one-mile distance, so that might give an edge to Blue Paynt, who has had plenty of prior success routing.

Yet there are many other runners to consider at more enticing prices. The TimeformUS Pace Projector is also predicting a fast pace, in which the two aforementioned favorites are shown dueling for the early lead. I want to consider some runners who can rally.

How Lucky (#3) owns the highest TimeformUS Late Pace Rating in the field, indicated by the “LP” flag on the Pace Projector. She did win going this distance at Aqueduct last winter, but her recent form since coming off a layoff at Laurel leaves a little to be desired. She has a right to do better with those starts under her belt, but I would demand a generous price.

Keen Dancer (#10) comes in with form that may look inconsistent at first glance. Yet she’s been placed at a variety of class levels in her recent starts and generally runs well when she’s appropriately spotted against cheaper claimers. She’s another who would appreciate plenty of pace up front, and the price should be fair.

My top pick is ITS COLD IN DEHERE (#5). This mare has plenty of back class, having defeated much tougher optional claiming foes last winter. She went off form last season and hasn’t looked quite the same since returning from a layoff. Yet I think she’s shown some subtle signs of improvement in her last couple of starts. She has finished with good interest in each of her last two starts against tougher in races that were dominated by front-runners. Now she makes her first start off the claim for Mertkan Kantmarmaci, who is 37 for 172 (22%, $2.09 ROI) with that move on dirt over the past 5 years. She also gets a significant rider upgrade to Trevor McCarthy, who should suit her running style.

Race 6: Starter Allowance

#5 Devil’s Tower goes for his third straight win today after a nice victory at this level in his last start. Hartman has been on fire all meet long at Oaklawn Park. #3 Dark Timber was a solid third behind our top choice last time out, while he had won two in a row before that start.

Race 7: Allowance

#3 Pistol has been close at this level in two straight starts at Oaklawn Park. She should get a nice inside stalking trip in this spot. #7 Argumental was second by a head last time out, which was her first race off of a long layoff. If she improves off of that effort she should be competitive today.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Jackman won at this level two races back before running second against similar runners last time out over this track. He will be competitive in this spot as well. #5 Kavod has been close several times at this level; however, has not been able to break though. He is the lone speed today, which should help his chances.

Race 9: Maiden Claiming

#4 Storm Strategy was second last time out at this level, which was his first race for Steve Asmussen. He should improve off of that race. #8 Third Watch gets major class relief in this spot after running decently against tougher runners in his first two starts.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (March 24)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday with an 8-race card from 12:00 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens in the opener with five of the twelve racing for the first time. (9) JEONGMUN SPECTER ran well on debut for 4th last August but didn’t reappear until January when he very much needed his run. He improved to 2nd from a wide draw on February 12th over this distance and third-up here, he should be peaking and can win. A few of the first timers look promising. (7) YEONGGWANGUIHAMSUNG led his heat, crossing the line in 2nd in a good time. He’ll be on pace here and Seo Seung-un being engaged is sure to make him well-supported. (8) ZETTA DREAM went through a very quick trial alongside some experienced racehorses and held his own well. If he can bring that form to the races, he can go close. So too (6) HWANGU DAEJANGGUN led every step of the way in a March 4th trial, crossing the line plenty to the good. He gets the benefit of an apprentice claim and is another who can make a bold showing first up. Returning to the experience, (1) CHOICE ROAD is probably the best of the rest.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Special Weight A / KRW 40 Million

More three-year-old maidens and it’s hard to go past (2) ROAD TO GLORY. After a runner-up finish over 1200M in January, he came from off the pace to run 4th over 1300M on February 24th, beating a couple of today’s rivals in the process. He seems to be needing further and he gets an additional half furlong to play with here and he could be hard to hold out. (11) HERE THE QUEEN was slow out last time out and scarcely featured over 1300M. She was sent off as favourite that day on the back of a strong runner-up performance back in January. Park Jae-i climbs aboard today, and she can be given another chance. (1) HAENGBOKHAN GIL has hinted that he might be figuring things out in his latest two, including a last start 5th over a mile just two weeks ago. He gets a great draw here which should allow Song Kyeong-yun to pick his spot, and he has as good a finish on him than any here. (3) STORMY DAY and (6) KELLY QUEEN among others with placing hopes.

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Special Weight A / KRW 25 Million

Tricky race. (10) SKY SHOT enters off back-to-back 3rd place finishes at 1200M and 1300M, both times beating some of today’s rivals. He drew wide in both of those so gate ten isn’t a concern, and today can be his day. He will vie for favourite status with (5) ADELE HORANGI. He has only missed to top-five once from seven starts and his best finish, a 2nd place, came at this distance. He generally settles midfield and runs on and should be in the finish again here. (1) SEOGWI FLASH enters off a 3rd and a 4th from her latest two, most recently at this distance on March 3rd. She draws a much better gate today so may well be on what little speed there is here, and she can be in this a long way. (7) VICTOR BASIUM races for the first time since last November. In a race of absolutely no early speed he may get an easy lead and while after is absence he has to be taken somewhat on trust; he should go close. (6) ETTEUMI another in the frame.

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies and mares only and (5) PAN STAR gets the nod here. She made all for her maiden win over this trip two starts back before trying to repeat over 1400M on her first try at this level on March 3rd. She comes down slightly in the weights, comes back in trip and will be aiming to lead gate to wire. (10) META QUEEN comes up in class following an on-pace win over 1200M back on January 29th. She comes up in class and slightly in trip here and while she may need a touch of luck at the start from the wide draw, she can measure up. (11) FAST FURY is done even fewer favours by the draw. Having got her maiden win over 1200M back in February, she ran a solid 4th on her first try at this class on March 5th, racing handy throughout. She remains nicely weighted and like Meta Queen, with a bit of early luck, she shouldn’t be far away. (3) GAMDONG ENERGY and (7) MY SONG among others to keep safe.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

It’s about time (8) NICHOLAS G. won He got promoted to this class after two runner-up finishes and ran 2nd for the third time on February 24th when on pace throughout over 1400M. He comes up to the mile for the first time and there is no reason why it can’t suit. He’ll be on pace and today can be his day. (5) KING BOSS is a consistent type with recent form reading well. He draws much better than he did when 5th at class and distance on March 5th and should be going closer here. (7) GREAT ONE comes back up to this trip after recent work at 1400M. He has the second fastest time of any of these for the mile and he can improve on his latest efforts here. (6) NOBLE COWBOY and (4) ARTHUR KING IJI among others who can be kept safe on a place line.

Wide open race where none of the twelve finished any worse than 6th on their respective latest outings. (8) GRAND SUN returned from almost a year out on February 3rd to score a come from behind win over 1300M. He comes up in class and slightly in trip but is down in the weights and if anything, should be better for that run. He has as good a chance as any. (6) RELEASE EDITION is also up in class, in his case following a comfortable victory over 1300M on February 17th. In this company he may well be ridden a bit further forward and the distance can suit. (1) DOCTOR PERSIA comes in off a 3rd place at class and distance on February 17th when settling right back and running on. He stays nicely weighted, draws well, and should be close. (5) PEOPLE POWER and (10) TWO OF US among plenty of others with credible chances.

Seoul Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Fillies (and one mare) only here. Several of these raced each other in a very similar race at class and distance on February 15th, with (1) ALPHA THOR coming out the best of them in 2nd place. She was a long way behind strong winner Carpe Babel but, having been on pace throughout, comfortably handled those she faces again here. It continued a positive start to her career and from a good draw, she can get her maiden win. (4) CROWD ONE has placed in each of her latest five outings, with a 2nd and four 3rd place finishes. Both her wins came at this trip and she also has the fastest time among any of these for the six furlongs. Tactically versatile, she has a strong finish and should be running into some money again. (7) GRAPHENE RAP WORLD comes up in class having almost led from gate to wire over 1300M on February 26th, only to finish 2nd. She comes down significantly in the weights and should be on pace here and in contention a long way. (8) ANOTHER MARINE and (2) BLUE CARSON among others in the frame.

Seoul Race 8: Class 3 (1800M) Special Weight B / KRW 75 Million

(10) JEOLGEOUNYEOJEONG suffered a surprise defeat when favourite over a mile on March 3rd, racing handy but just coming up short in 3rd place. She has previously won at this class over 1400M and comes up to the Oaks distance of 1800M for the first time. The first leg of the Triple Tiara is four weeks away and she should return to winning ways here. Another three-year-old filly looks to be the main danger. (5) DOCTOR OSCAR won the Listed Gyeongnam Do Min Ilbo Trophy for juveniles over 1200M last November and comes in here having beaten a couple of these on her way to 2nd over a mile on February 24th having led for much of the way. She also comes up to two turns for the first time but gets a better draw, and she should be in this a long way again. (3) SEONGSIL SIHWA was 3rd behind Doctor Oscar in that February 24th race, continuing a consistent run of form, and she should be close once more. (11) STAR MATTA and (2) SEOBU TEUKGEUP among others in the placing frame.
