Michelle Yu: Dubai World Cup Day Best Bets

                        March 24, 2023 | By 1/ST BET
                        Meydan | Race 5 | UAE Derby

5-Derma Sotagake : Competitive third in the Saudi Derby, he should appreciate having more ground as he has run well at a little longer distances before. Christophe Lemaire takes over riding duties on the up and comer.

3-Cairo: Mendelssohn connections try and emulate that UAE Derby win with the ultra consistent Cairo, who uses an all weather win at Dundalk as a stepping stone to here. Homebred has never run on dirt before but I see no issues from the sire’s kids and he has a sibling with a few dirt wins. Can never count out Ballydoyle in these spots; though I would watch him closely as there is indication he could come unglued the night of.

13-Worcester: Maiden was 3rd in the Bob Lewis at his California base and is bred to relish more real estate. Looked like he got over the ground well in a 5 panel breeze, but we have seen in past years a difference in the morning surface versus raceday surface. Also, of all the trophies lining Baffert’s walls, he has yet to claim this one.

8-Goraiko: Last year's winning trainer Koichi Santani sends his charge off a well beaten 5th last time out in the Hyacinth won by Perriere that day. In keeping with our footsteps theme, Crown Pride was also soundly defeated in that prep before taking the UAE Derby last year. I like to think that was a prep going shorter than preferred and he can come back with a solid effort.

                        Wagers:

                        Exacta Box: 5,3,13,8

                        $10 Win-Place 5

Meydan | Race 9 | Dubai World Cup

4-Country Grammer: Defending champ is aching to get back to 10 furlongs and he was able to parlay a Saudi runner-up into a win last year. If you want to see a horse with pure guts watch this years running as he was nowhere to be found turning for home. Ultra consistent performer needs to reel in Panthalassa, but has the extra ground to do so and is the top pick.

9-Panthalassa: Outside draw is not my favorite spot for my need the lead Saudi CUp champion. He was able to ride the rails in Saudi to a win and took no pressure. With other speed to him inside here, that will be an all out commitment to get to the front and a battle will need to be won early before fighting the war late. There is an off chance he sits off someone and is content, but I think he is best when making each post. I could see him winning, but I could see him flopping if he doesn’t get on the lead. Not off the bandwagon, but not my top play today.

3-Cafe Pharoah: Good showing in Saudi just a head behind Country Grammer. He made a mid-move up the rail to put him in good position and was grinding down on the winner late. If Country Grammer for some reason doesn’t fire, this horse has a shot.

1-Algiers: Draws near the outside, but he has overcome that recently with a 6-length score in the Maktoum Challenge Round 1, which he followed up with a facile score in Round 2. This will be a first attempt in against top-class foes, but certainly has an affinity for the local strip. Post allows him clear sailing and he has been pointed towards this race. Not without a chance to run well here.

2-Bendoog: What to do with a local horse who has been playing the bridesmaid (groomsman?) recently behind several of these, but could do so again just because of the nature of the beast. Sire Gun Runner was a runner-up in this race and, at 50-1, you wouldn’t be unhappy if he manages to eek out another workmanlike performance.

                        Wager:

                        Exacta Part-Wheel: 4 over 2,3,1,9

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

                          March 24, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo begins the weekend with a 9-race card and the 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                          Race 6

1-Flying Officer (3-1)-Steps up and hasn't won versus the $6k claimers. But the last 2 wins against $5k claimers were dominate, so will include with this post draw.
3-Johnny Ringo (8-1)-The 6-year-old looked a bit rough in last and got away slowly. But he kept coming even though he was boxed in until the top of the lane. Longo could work a suck-around trip this time and should offer a nice price.
5-Paddy Murphy (5-1)-Just about everyone seemed to be closing late in the last mile and the 2nd half went in 58.4. Murphy was last on the rail for much of the journey and then went from side to side down the stretch looking for a clear lane. James Kennedy can do much better and should put the 7-year-old in striking range.

                          Race 7

6-Bombay Hanover (2-1)-This Plano entry and the one below should be a cut above the others. Has been in good form, especially considering the last 2 starts were in the slop. The recent win was the 1st in 18 tries on a wet track, can be a player with a smooth trip.
7-Unfiltered (3-1)-Has been cashing checks versus straight Open company and James Kennedy between the pipes represents a positive driver change. Smaller field won't hurt, could get on the engine, and make every call a winning one.

                          Race 8

6-Pecorino (4-1)-Drops to a spot to shine, gets a boost from a positive driver change and comes back in sequence. Fits well with this kind and should be in the hunt at the wire.
7-Impressive Art (3-1)-Three of the last 4 starts have been on a sloppy track and shows 1 win in 25 races on a wet surface. Simply wasn't as good as the 2 chalks who finished ahead last week. Drops and should be a threat against this group with a decent steer.

                          Race 9

1-Cenalta Hawk (5-1)-Got on the engine last time, which was a change in tactics, and faded down the lane. Lackey gets the call and he knows how to get the best out of this 4-year-old. Was off 3-weeks before the last race and comes back in sequence this time.
3-Down It (5-1)-Just missed by a neck last week in the 1st start for the Castillo barn. Gets a ++ driver change in James Kennedy and should be a main player.
4-JP Jetty (2-1)-Schneider pupil has a won 4 of the last 6 starts and was a close 2nd in the other 2 tries. This is a major player, and the price will be tiny.

                          0.20 Pick 4

                          1,3,5/6,7/6,7/1,3,4
                          Total Bet=$7.20

Laurel Late Pick 4 Analysis: Friday, March 24

                            March 24, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
Short-priced winners dominated Laurel Park’s Late Pick 4 last Friday. History could repeat itself in the 50-cent wager this week, but here’s to hoping a couple price plays spoil the party and make our suggested $56 ticket below pay off:

LRL 6th race (3:00 EST) -- FREE ADMISSION is the one to beat on paper, class dropping for her seasonal debut, six-plus months removed from a pair of in-the-money finishes at 5F. But still going to use OUT OF LUCK after a well-bet but troubled debut and a couple first-time starters. WINDS OF FORTUNE, working forwardly and getting in light-weighted with Lasix, is the son of multiple graded stakes winner Hoppertunity and a dam who was 25/4-7-6 with $169k in earnings. WEST COAST WILDCAT’S dam was a first-out MSW winner and solid allowance sprinter.

LRL 7th race (3:31 EST) -- Here’s seven reasons to punch the ‘ALL’ button. BONDED caught THTWASTHENTHISISNW for his second photo-finish win in a row. Trainer Claudio Gonzalez sends out class dropper BLOWN SAVE and class-rising repeat candidate FUN LOVIN CRIMINAL. OROCOVIX earned the best last-race Beyer in the field. SPECTRIER enters a hot barn off the claim. HE’S ON FIRE broke his maiden at this level, now sheds 14 pound after a couple dull efforts.

LRL 8th race (4:02 EST) -- MOODY WOMAN rallied for third in the Grade III Barbara Fritchie at 7F, earning the top speed figure of her career. Her 59-1 odds belied the fact that in her prior start, she rallied 5-wide to run third in a 5-1/2F allowance, unable to reach two rivals who are a combined 17-47 with $754k in earnings but finishing ahead of an eight-time stakes winner and four-time stakes runner-up. BENEATH THE STARS shook clear of pressure on the turn, met two more challenges in mid-stretch and got caught by the late-running winner. She will face pressure again at an unproven distance but remains on the Pick 4 ticket off that game effort.

LRL 9th race (4:33 EST) -- YOUR ANALYSIS looms odds-on on the class drop and could live up to favoritism. He was unlucky to not win in his first one-mile test, then finished third last out, 6 lengths behind Crossland, who came back to win by 8-1/4 lengths. The winning time was 1-3/5 slower than a 3X $62,000 allowance and 1/5 off a triple ‘key’ Maryland-bred allowance. Look HERE AND NOFURTHER for a potential upsetter in the field. He has been heavily bet in every start but plagued by troubled trips sprinting. Now the son of Cigar Mile (G-I) winner Tonalist and Holiday Girl, whose offspring have finished first or second in 18 of 40 dirt routes, goes long for the first time.

                            Suggested 50-cent Ticket

                            LRL 6th race: 1, 2, 3, 9
                            LRL 7th race: ALL
                            LRL 8th race: 3, 5
                            LRL 9th race: 3, 4

                            COST: $56

                              Charles Town - Race #7
#5 Get Off My Cloud He stepped up nicely off the claim last time out, and I think he has the right style to rally past these late from a bit further off the pace than he raced in that last one.
#2 Thewitchisgone He tends to give away ground in the final yards, but he has the ability to press just a bit off the speed, and that may send him for home with the lead after a first-jump trip. Riser was competitive with this type late last year.
#8 Thunderinreadyrick Speed couldn't stay late when facing similar last out, but he's probably quickest early with a chance to discourage the other forward players. Would want better than the 5/1 ML offering.
Race Summary Get Off My Cloud gets the edge in a competitive race, as I think he'll wind up landing a good trip in just a bit behind the pace, and he owns a good number of competitive two-turn tries locally.
                              Charles Town - Race #8
#2 Acasha's Intuition He has really put things together this year, and he should be in line for a great trip tracking the pace. Think he's pretty tough here if he holds that form.
#5 No Love for Juba He's a pretty reliable type, but I worry about the fact that he hasn't been a serious threat to a winner while landing those recent underneath shares. Capable, but I think he's more likely underneath.
#4 Little Roo Roo I'd love to see him settle just a touch off the pace here, as he's capable of something better than he showed last time out, and the price should be better here, too.
Race Summary Acasha's Intuition figures for a good run of things here, and he has been in really consistent form in those last few races. He should be right in the mix again with these.
                              Charles Town - Race #9
#7 Buttoned Up He's not really known for passing horses, but I wonder if he might get towed into the pace in an advantageous way while turning back to this sharp trip. Interesting enough.
#2 Company Clown Absolutely no argument but the price for anyone landing here, as he's super consistent at this level and tends to get perfect tracking trips. Still, he has been known to lose a race or two at this level, and he's going to be another short price. The one to beat.
#1 Freedom is Ringing I think he will likely find one or two of these a bit too tough tonight, but he might wind up working out a cozy trip from the inside while not too far off the quicker players early.
Race Summary Buttoned Up has been showing sharp pace in his recent starts, and I'm hoping he'll find a perfect spot just behind the splits. I'd sign up at something near the 10/1 ML price.

                                Golden Gate - Race #4
#5 SPUN BEAUTIFUL (5-2) New horse with blinkers, takes some catching as today’s Best Bet.
#3 BOLD DAUGHTER (8-1) Recent thirds full of trouble lines, due for a clean trip.
#2 MAGICAL LADY (8-5) Runs for Alvarado, stands 9/4-1-4 at Golden Gate.
Race Summary SPUN BEAUTIFUL has put her speed on display since adding blinkers and resumes her monthly racing schedule in a perfect spot to use it. She braced for a challenge from the winning favorite and went down fighting in a failed three-peat attempt last out. Bet to win and place.
                                Golden Gate - Race #6
#1 MISS ACCELERATE (2-1) Can sit ideal stalking trip from the rail, added ground a plus.
#2 UNION STREET CAT (10-1) Mild rally could be upgraded with projected lively pace up ahead.
#3 OTTER POP (9-5) Led clear until stretch in last pair, but got caught as the favorite.
Race Summary MISS ACCELERATE chased favorite OTTER POP through solid fractions before the upset winner passed by both of them. She showed a passing gear in her debut sprint and could turn the tables at a better price with an extra half-furlong to cover. Bet to win and place.
                                Golden Gate - Race #7
#7 IRISH SONG LEADER (5-1) Got makeover recently, made eye-catching move to break maiden.
#3 DUST MAKER (8-1) Stalked pace 5-wide at one mile, can make better use of her speed in here.
#6 MAJESTIC OPS (6-1) Solid sprint form, outrun against better on the stretch-out, use in gimmicks.
Race Summary IRISH SONG LEADER made a last-to-first power sweep into a slow pace to break her maiden with second-time Lasix. The lack of pace in here is a concern but several contenders have had their chances for a second win. Bet to win and place and play a 3-6-7 exacta box.
