    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 8 WHIRLAWAY PARTY 8/5
    # 7 LIGHTNING TREND 7/2
    # 4 RALLY ACTRESS 9/2
WHIRLAWAY PARTY has a respectable shot to take this race. Has strong Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet here. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 83, has one of the most favorable class advantages in this group of animals. Always good to invest in a conditioner with this kind of formidable win percentage - 15 percent - at this distance & surface. LIGHTNING TREND - Has to be considered against this group displaying very strong numbers lately and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 56 under similar conditions. Has a strong shot in here if you like back class. RALLY ACTRESS - Has to be given a shot against this field displaying respectable figures as of late and an average speed figure of 61 under similar conditions. This selection will feel the med change - with second time Lasix today.

      Fonner Park - Race #5 - Post: 3:30pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $4,900 Class Rating: 53

      Rating:

      #1 CHAN (ML=6/1)
      #2 RYAN EXPRESS (ML=5/2)

CHAN - Always beware of the longer priced equine when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Ranked the highest in earnings per race. Another indication that this animal has the class to win today. RYAN EXPRESS - This mount could be tough today, especially since Roman rode last time around the track and now should be more familiar with this one. A big drop in class figure points from his April 14th race at Fonner Park. Based on that element, I will give this one the advantage. This animal has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 26 to 39 to 53 right in a row. This gelding's last speed rating garnered on April 14th is tops in last race speed ratings.

      Vulnerable Contenders: #9 CORTE (ML=3/1), #4 LOVE OURS (ML=4/1), #7 STEALING HEARTS (ML=5/1),

CORTE - Just can't invest in this racer. Didn't show me anything last race out or on February 26th. LOVE OURS - Not easy to wager on this questionable contender this time out. Make him show you something in a sprint race before you wager on him in a race of 6 1/2 furlongs. Could be tough for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put him on the likely underlays list. STEALING HEARTS - No picnic to bet on any mount in a sprint event at 5/1 when he hasn't shown any successful efforts in sprints in the last couple of months. 5/1 odds isn't enough for this entrant when looking at the most recent showings. The speed rating last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's affair. Mark this mount as a possibly overvalued contestant.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #1 CHAN on top if we're getting at least 3/1 odds

        Race 2 - Maiden - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $19000 Class Rating: 68

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.

        RECOMMENDED CHOICES
        # 1 MIDNITE POLLITICS 3/1
        # 10 GET A LOTA TONIGHT 4/1
        # 4 CLEMENTINE 5/1
MIDNITE POLLITICS looks to be a very strong contender. Must be given consideration here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. Will almost certainly go to the lead and may never look back. Earned a very good speed figure last time out. GET A LOTA TONIGHT - With Flores aboard her, this filly will almost certainly be able to break out early in this event. Reason to like this filly as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. CLEMENTINE - Solid chance today with second time Lasix. Could best this field based on the speed figure - 59 - of her last contest.

          Santa Anita - Race #5 - Post: 3:05pm - Optional Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $63,000 Class Rating: 99

          Rating:

          #6 HAPI HAPI (ML=5/1)
          #4 ENJOY IT STRAIT (ML=5/2)
          #3 HOLIDAY AROUSAL (ML=3/1)

HAPI HAPI - Gelding's last race was against tougher open company. He's in with easier 'state breds' today. A horse coming back this quickly after a sharp contest is a good signal. ENJOY IT STRAIT - This gelding is in exceptional condition right now. Ended up first last time out and comes back promptly. Ran against 'open' company last race out, in with state breds today. Changes tracks from last out at Golden Gate Fields to here. Multiple wins at multiple race tracks tell me this horse likes to switch it up, so that's a good sign. HOLIDAY AROUSAL - A racer coming back this promptly after a strong race is a good omen. Recent speed ratings show dominant pattern of improvement.

          Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MINISTER SHANE (ML=3/1), #2 LIL RICHARDS BELLO (ML=4/1), #1 MR. T'S THIRSTY (ML=6/1),

MINISTER SHANE - While Equibase's speed ratings are strong, I would discount the high one from the March 18th on the soft turf. Some horses just run well on the off going. LIL RICHARDS BELLO - Didn't look so great last time. Probably won't make an impact in today's event. Speed figs of 93/88/78 are headed on a downward course. Don't feel this steed will do much running in today's race. That last speed figure was substandard when compared with today's Equibase class figure. MR. T'S THIRSTY - Not probable that the fig he earned on April 2nd will be enough in this affair.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 HAPI HAPI to win if you can get at least 9/2 odds
