RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Advenuresome; 4-Rippin’ Ruis
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: The Friday opener is a straight maiden turf miler for older horses that didn’t come up particularly strong. Adventuresome, with just one troubled start on his resume, may have potential the others don’t, so let’s go with the Peter Miller-trained gelding on top. After flashing early speed but then losing his action while green and falling back on the turn, the son of Arrogate found his best stride late, closed a gap without being knocked about, and then galloped out in front in his sprint debut last month. With that bit of experience behind him, the stretch out in trip, and the advantageous rail post position, he should produce a significant forward move while offering excellent wagering value at 6-1 on the morning line. Rippin Ruis represents stranger danger from Australia in his U.S. debut and should be competitive on this circuit. He’s a Mick Ruis homebred and a first-time Lasix user with a healthy work pattern and he won’t have be a world beater to win or at least outrun his 8-1 morning line. These are the two we’ll be including in our rolling exotics with preference on top to Adventuresome.

RACE 2: Post: 1:32 PT Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Established
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Established, claimed for $16,000 when a sharp second in mid-February while more than five lengths clear of the others, returns three months later on the one-level drop for new trainer Mark Glatt, certainly not a healthy pattern and therefore suspect despite looking much the best of this group off his raw form. If he has at least one good one left, he’ll handle this assignment, but at 6/5 on the morning he won’t be offering any wagering value even if he does win. The barn has just average states (12%) with the first-off-the-claim angle, giving further pause to taking the short price. In the absence of a viable and attractive alternative, we’ll put him on top in a race that is probably is best left alone.

RACE 3: Post: 2:04 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-She’s My Niece; 1-Midnight Love; 2-Spot D’ Oro
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: There’s very little to work with in this five-runner baby race. She’s My Niece has displayed some ability in the morning and looks like a live item from her comfortable outside draw for a barn whose maidens often run better than the work. She’s had three successive half mile gate drills, so we know the daughter of Hard Spun is more than fit enough for this abbreviated dash. Midnight Love, one of two in the field from the Hector Palma barn, is a daughter of Midnight Lute with a good series of morning preps, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see how perform well for an outfit that is quite capable of winning with a first timer. Ditto for stablemate Spot D’Oro, who has done enough in the morning to indicate at least some ability. These are the three we’ll have on our ticket in a race that should be handled with care.

RACE 4: Post: 2:36 PT Grade: B

Backups/Savers: 4-Rip City

Forecast: Weegee appears well-spotted in this $25,000 claiming grass miler while dropping a notch below his claim level for the first time in six starts. Reunited with “win rider” Hector Berrios, the Jeff Mullins-trained gelding is assured a ground-saving trip from his good rail post position, and with a prior win over this course last fall and recent speed figures that are stronger than par for this level the son of Gio Ponti seems the solid choice at 2-1 on the morning line. Past classer Rip City has lost a step or two at age six but at this level he has to be taken seriously. Unplaced in his last four starts, the son of City Zip may get his confidence back against this group and is worth including on your ticket, at least as a backup.

RACE 5: Post: 3:08 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Rosy Edge
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Here’s another five runner affair, this one for bottom-rung maiden $20,000 claiming fillies and mares routing on the main track. Rosy Edge has little to beat and is sure to go favored, probably even lower than her morning line of 6/5. Claimed for this price by trainer Leonard Powell when second while nearly four lengths clear of the rest in a similar affair in late March, the daughter of First Samurai removes blinkers and projects to settle in the second flight and then kick on with it from the quarter pole home. At 6/5 on the morning line, she can be used as a short-priced rolling exotic single but probably not much else.

RACE 6: Post: 3:40 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Ghostly Act; 4-Montana
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Ghostly Act is listed at 4-1 on the morning line in this state-bred maiden turf miler, and although he’ll be at some disadvantage leaving from the outside draw with the rail out 30 feet the son of Acclamation may offer some wagering value at or near that price. A vastly improved runner-up at a big price (30-1) in his first try on grass last month, the Debbie Winick-trained Harris Farm homebred can build on that performance while stretching out again and projecting to enjoy a good stalking trip. Montana is an eight race maiden and not one to trust, but he’s a fit on figures while stretching out, and if he’s ever going to handle a route of ground it likely will be in his first attempt. His one prior turf outing wasn’t much but he may be a sharper type now. We’ll try to survive and advance using just these two in our rolling exotics.

RACE 7: Post: 4:12 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): Getthemoney
Backups/savers: 1-Blessed Touch

Forecast: Getthemoney lost all chance at the start with a poor break in her recent comeback but did well to pick up the pieces and finish third in a fast, highly quality, stakes-level allowance affair over this track and distance in late March. She’s trained very well since, so if the daughter of Midnight Lute makes no mistakes she should be capable of regaining her winning form with anything close to her very impressive maiden romp last summer at Del Mar. Blessed Touch is the one to fear most. Back sprinting after finishing a respectable third in the Santa Ysabel Stakes behind unbeaten Faiza last time out, she’s been freshened for more than two months but has been working steadily in the interim and finished a solid third at this level sprinting over the local main track two runs back. We’ll prefer Getthemoney on top but use both in our rolling exotics.

RACE 8: Post: 4:44 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Ava’s Storm
Backups/savers: 4-Mygalsdawnnlori

Forecast: Ava’s Storm was a good runner-up at this level over this course in her debut in February and returns for trainer John Sadler in a winnable spot. She’s a quick sort that must negotiate an extra half furlong today, but if she can clear without pressure the daughter of Midnight Storm projects to parlay a trip as the controlling speed to maiden $50,000 claiming victory at a reasonable 5/2 on the morning line. Her main challenge should come from Mygalsdawnnlori, second under these conditions last month in an improved effort in her first start for a tag. She’s not quite where she needs to be on pure numbers compared to our top pick but with another forward move should she be capable of making a run for it.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Early Pick 4 Analysis

To start the weekend, Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race program in place. The $1.00 Early Pick 4 kicks off the card, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

4-Lettuceriprita A (2-1)-Won easily on 4-28 getting on the point and drawing off by 3 lengths. Bartlett should have the pedal down and will play catch me if you can.
5-Statement Made A (7/2)-Won versus this kind last week by coming out of the pocket and snagging the leader near the wire. Could win right back with the same game plan.

Race 2

3-C-Bet Hanover (5/2)-The 4-year-old ships in from Philly and shouldn't blush at the company. This is Bartlett's pick over #2 the program chalk who is dropping again in search of a picture. My lean will be with the pilot and this Ford pupil has hit the board in 5 of 8 at Yonkers and has posted 2 wins.
4-Gardys Legacy A (5/2)-This will be the 1st start for the Forte barn and will use looking for a better price than the morning line. Could be ready to improve as Stratton steers in the 3rd start since a sick scratch on 3-24.

Race 3

2-Rockn Philly (7/2)-Won versus Open company in Philly, ships back and lands in a good spot to double up. From this post Lachance has options and this veteran mare does good work at Yonkers (44-10-7-7).
3-Man Dontforget Me (7/2)-Program comment says "tough trip" about the last start but there wasn't anything tough about it. Getting on the engine and trying to wire the field might not have been the right plan, but on the drop here things should be different. Could catch a cozy trip and not need to get on the engine.

Race 4

2-Viva Las Vegas N (9/2)-Comes off an even effort in an extended distance race and had missed a start. Back in at a soft level and team Lachance should be forwardly placed tonight. Could be overlooked at the windows.
3-Rockathon (9/2)-Needed the last start at M1 after missing almost a month. Was used hard into a 26.2 opening quarter and it took a toll. Boyd could get the point and not have to go that fast off the gate. Won at this class back on 1-31 and then beat the NW10000L5 on 2-14. Should be a player, and like the one above may offer some value.

Pimlico Late Pick 4 Analysis: Friday, May 12

Friday, May 12

Maryland racing action returned to Pimlico this week in advance of the May 20 Preakness Stakes. Favorites dominated during opening week in 2022. From 18 main-track sprints, six favorites and eight others at 3-1 or less prevailed, while eight went wire-to-wire. In 11 dirt route races, four favorites won and four others won at 5-2 or less. The 50-cent Late Pick 4 this Friday, May 12, features one dirt sprint, one dirt route and two turf races. Here’s a look at the action with a suggested $48 ticket:

PIM 6th race (2:58 EST) -- PETIT FILS returns from an eight-month layoff. He exited an August 28 turf route that produced three runners-up with an average 80 Beyer, then defeated Justintimforwin at Delaware Park before that rival won two $16,000 claiming races on the Tampa Bay Downs lawn by a combined 9-1/2 lengths. U S CONSTITUTION regressed last year after a 4-for-9 sophomore season when he earned $86k. He returns as a gelding off a good series of workouts. KRUG has a useful comeback race to summon, shaking a duel on the far turn before three rivals passed by, two of whom won in their next start. GUNSLINGER has five wire-to-wire wins on the lawn in his last seven starts and lands in an ideal spot to maximize his speed.

PIM 7th race (3:30 EST) -- CLUBMAN rallied 5-wide to a mid-stretch lead two starts back before class-dropping BOBBY G (17-73, $459k) foiled his three-peat attempt. I’ll take CLUBMAN to turn the tables off his third-place follow-up effort in a turf-to-dirt stakes race. GUILLAUME chased decent middle fractions on a muddy track and faded to last in a one-mile optional claiming race that timed faster than the Henry Clark Stakes that Clubman ran in. He gets in light-weighted from the rail and projects an ideal stalking trip. SHADY MUNNI is unproven at this level but he took a ton of late money when he won off the claim two starts ago, then tired in an allowance route after dueling with next-out repeater All Threes (4-19, $195k).

PIM 8th race (4:03 EST) -- The nine entrants in the body of this 5F Maryland-bred allowance are a combined 6-for-69 on the turf. That being said, Bella Bettina is a viable longshot off a turf-to-dirt victory. She was outrun early, gathered momentum near the turn and sustained an inside rally to blow past the favorite in deep stretch. I’m using longshot PREPAREFORTAKEOFF on the ticket. She was claimed by unheralded trainer Hassan Elamri, who is 13-92 in turf races the last five years with an average $14.80 win mutuel. ISLAND PHILO rallied for two wins and two narrow defeats in her last eight turf sprints. FLIRTATIOUS LAD has faced better than most in here and has been up close for the stretch drive many times. IN VAIN is a deserving favorite with nearly $100k in turf earnings, but at 2-1 odds with a 1-13 record on the turf, try to beat her. (If #15 HALIEGH B. draws into the race off the also-eligible list, she is must use on turf or dirt.)

PIM 9th race (4:34 EST) – Trainer Jane Cibelli arrives from Gulfstream Park with two of the favorites. I like POGGIBONSI at the better price of 9-2. She drops out of a very strong $40k maiden sprint to start her career. She chased speedball Liana B, who led clear in all five of her starts thus far, before odds-on favorite Musical Design (7/2-3-0, $86k) rallied to win. Third-place finisher Sienna Lady broke her maiden for $40k next out and fifth-place finisher Tiz Business came back to break her maiden and win a $12,500/nw2 claimer last out. BABY SOX failed in a slow-paced 6F maiden claimer at Aqueduct at 1-to-5 odds, but she ships in from New York and adds blinkers for the high-percentage claim barn of trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

Charles Town - Race #6

#10 Chromatic Lass	Think she'll find a decent enough trip from the high draw, as she has a little tactical speed and has shown a pressing gear that might serve her well tonight. Think she'll turn the tables on the ones who beat her last out.
#4 Xanthe	She finished in front of some of these in that two-back run, and she held her form really well on the class hike when trying stakes company. Something like her last would do, but I wouldn't be shocked if she came back just a touch here.
#5 Elianagrace	There's nothing reliable about her form, but she has a one-paced running style that might play well in this spot, and I could see her landing a piece of this at a decent price.
Race Summary	Chromatic Lass and Xanthe seem tough in here as logical players, but 'Lass probably has room to bounce back off the fading effort last out behind a couple of these. The price should get a bit better, too.

Charles Town - Race #7

#7 Subject to Change	He has enough speed to be right up on the splits while adding a turn tonight, and he doesn't appear to be meeting a ton of serious early burn. Thinking the forward players might settle this one.
#2 Uncaptured Storm	He'll make his local debut while in good form, and I think he's really competitive with this group if he likes the new footing. Think he might get the right trip between the first and last flight.
#11 Mailman's a Flyer	Think he has a little appeal if he gets in, as he has run well locally in the past and has a higher baseline effort than most of these. Not sure he's offering the 15/1 ML price if he goes, but I would want him on the multi-race plays.
Race Summary	Subject to Change will likely get overlooked just a bit, and he might be able to work out a decent trip while right up on the pace at this distance. His best stuff isn't as good as what some of the others can offer, but I think he's honest enough to consider with maybe an advantageous trip waiting for him.

Charles Town - Race #8

#7 Liquid Louie	He has found his way out of dull form in the past, so I'm willing to give him a look in this spot in hopes that he's no worse for wear and can get himself back to the form from late last year. Interesting enough, but he's probably all or nothing.
#9 Laddie Liam	He bounced back with an improved effort last out, and he has the right kind of speed to adapt to the what happens out of the gate. There are a handful of tries on his page that would likely make short work of these, and he makes as much sense on top as any of these.
#3 Jack the Ripper	He's not meeting a ton of other serious pace, so he's an obvious forward threat at this kind of trip tonight, but I would want something much better than the 9/5 ML price to even think about it off the two flat tries. Willing to let him beat me.
Race Summary	Liquid Louie should be a playable enough price to give him a chance in here, and he owns some races from the fall and winter that would make him a threat in this spot. Why not?

Race Summary	Only one entrant in this maiden claiming sprint has run this year. OPEECHEE found blinkers of little help against $100k earner City Legend and next-out MSW winner Too Much Talk when he last raced 10 months ago. But he kept a busy work tab since late March, takes a big class drop and is worth a win and place bet.

Woodbine - Race #5

#2 SUGAR IS GOLDEN (5-1)	Often in hunt, runs well fresh, could hold tactical edge over main rivals.
#5 STERLING SPEED (5-1)	Recent race a plus versus several returnees, figures close up, use in gimmicks.
#1 SYSTEMATIC (2-1)	Makes seasonal debut, needs pace to run at but there’s not much of it in here.
Race Summary	SUGAR IS GOLDEN bid past the favorite in upper stretch and held off the deep closers to win at 6-1/2F when last seen in December. She ran second to the favorite in her prior start at this distance and could be forwardly placed in this field off a pair of recent 5F workouts. Bet to win and place and play a 2,5/1,2,5/ALL trifecta.

Woodbine - Race #8

#3 HEKLA’S AURA (3-1)	Switched leads in mid-stretch, closed with a rush to just miss in seasonal debut.
#1 FEDALINE (6-1)	Returned home, poked a head in front near stretch, went down fighting, steps up.
#7 DAWN PHAROAH (9-5)	Best numbers, best speed, the one to beat on class drop.
Race Summary	HEKLA’S AURA closed with a flourish to just miss after she changed leads in mid-stretch. She gets ample pace flow to rally into in her second start off a seven-month layoff. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-7 exactas.

He now moves back to the grass which he liked in his debut while sprinting. (8) Love to Shop was second in her debut at Saratoga at 1-1 and will make her second start on the grass for Todd Pletcher. (11) St. Benedicts Prep made two starts at Saratoga for Chad Brown and comes back here with a surface switch. (10) Reflexivity did debut on the grass at the Spa for Brown and also comes back in here.
