Golden Gate Fields - Race #1 - Post: 1:15pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 69

    Rating:

    #2 ACHROMATIC (ML=10/1)

ACHROMATIC - When this jockey and conditioner work together you have to take a look. Herrera and Haley have been fabulous together. This horse is at the top in earnings per race entered. She looks nice in today's race.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #4 BLAZIN BAE (ML=9/5), #5 BEA MISCHIEF (ML=5/2), #6 BIKINI NATION (ML=4/1),

BLAZIN BAE - Tough to bet on any horse to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the shot. BEA MISCHIEF - Don't think that this filly has value at 5/2 this time. BIKINI NATION - Had to show me lots more last time out. Never made much of an impact.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #2 ACHROMATIC on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

      Penn National - Race #6 - Post: 8:26pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,800 Class Rating: 60

      Rating:

      #3 SILENT SCARLET (ML=5/2)

SILENT SCARLET - Taking a big drop in Equibase class figure points from her Mar 24th race at Oaklawn Park. Based on that data point, I will give this thoroughbred the advantage. Speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track in the last race. On a non-sloppy track, has a fair chance in today's race.

      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DUNDER BOSS (ML=2/1), #6 BLIND SIGHT (ML=3/1), #2 TROPICALDEPRESSION (ML=5/1),

DUNDER BOSS - This runner hasn't been on the track since April 13th. Not even any workouts. BLIND SIGHT - The third place result in the last event was not the greatest. Speed ratings of 67/63/45 are started the wrong way. TROPICALDEPRESSION - Hard to keep chasing this kind of 'hanger' horse. This filly didn't do too much last time out. The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's race. Mark this racer as a likely underlay.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #3 SILENT SCARLET on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more
      EXACTA WAGERS: 3 with [2,4]

Race 6 - Maiden Special Weight - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $61000 Class Rating: 79

FOR CALIFORNIA BRED OR CALIFORNIA SIRED MAIDENS, THREE, FOUR, AND FIVE YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS.

        RECOMMENDED CHOICES
        # 6 GET THE GOLD 3/1
        # 3 SILVER N BLACK 5/2
        # 1 SILENT HEAT 4/1
My selection for this race is GET THE GOLD. He has been running well and the speed figures are among the top in this group of horses. Has competitive early pace and will probably fare strongly versus this group. Should be given consideration - I like the figures from the last competition. SILVER N BLACK - Hess has this colt travelling well and is a very good pick based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figures earned in route races recently. Has been running soundly lately and ought to be on the front end early on. SILENT HEAT - With a quite good 76 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this race. Saavedra has this colt racing well and is a very good selection based on the formidable Equibase Speed Figures garnered in route races lately.

          MLB leaders in pitching strikeouts:
67— Spencer Strider Atl/Kevin Gausman Tor
          66— Shohei Ohtani, LAA
          64— Zac Gallen, Ariz
          62— Pablo Lopez, Mini
58— Gerrit Cole NYY/Shane McClanahan, TB
          57— Framber Valdez, Hst

          Quote of the Day
“Raiders and Chiefs, that just sounds like a football game, it sounds like Christmas. Maybe we can get a little weather in Kansas City, get some snow. A few hours later in Philadelphia, same thing. Santa Claus going back to Philly, I’m sure he can’t wait for the Giants-Eagles game. And once Lamar Jackson re-signed with the Ravens I think we felt even better about putting the Ravens in national television windows and so you get a game like Ravens-49ers to backstop a tripleheader.”
          NFL scheduling guru Mike North

          Friday’s quiz
When Atlanta Braves’ owner Ted Turner managed his team briefly in 1977 during a bad slump, what uniform number did he wear?

          Thursday’s quiz
Weeb Ewbank was the first head coach, other than Vince Lombardi, to win the Super Bowl. He coached the Jets in Super Bowl III.

          Wednesday’s quiz
LA Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke also owns the NBA’s Denver Nuggets.

          ************************************************** ****

Friday’s Den: Quick thoughts on the 2023 NFL schedule

Before I start, thanks to Ken Thomson for having me on his excellent radio show Thursday; it is always fun and an honor to chop it up with one of the best in the business.

          — Aaron Rodgers’ Jets get five primetime games, plus the Black Friday game in November against the Dolphins— that game is a 3pm local time kickoff, the day after Thanksgiving.

          — Cardinals, Colts, Falcons, Texans do not have any primetime games scheduled; the NFL’s schedule team doesn’t have high hopes for these teams.

          — Thanksgiving tripleheader:
          Packers @ Detroit
          Commanders @ Dallas
          49ers @ Seattle

          — Christmas tripleheader:
          Raiders @ Kansas City
          Giants @ Philadelphia
          Ravens @ San Francisco

          — In Weeks 2-3, there are two games on Monday night:
Week 2: Saints @ Carolina, Browns @ Pittsburgh
Week 3: Eagles @ Tampa Bay, Rams @ Cincinnati

          — Division rival Cowboys-Giants meet in Week 1 for 7th time in the last 12 years.

          — There are conference final rematches, but both are later in the season; 49ers travel to Philadelphia in Week 13; the Bengals go to Kansas City on New Year’s Eve in Week 17.

          — Deshaun Watson’s Cleveland Browns visit Houston, Watson’s old home, on Christmas Eve in Week 16.

          — The two New Jersey teams visit Las Vegas on consecutive weekends in November; Giants visit the Raiders in Week 9, Jets visit in Week 10.

Raiders’ defensive coordinator Patrick Graham was with the Giants two years ago, got passed over for their head coaching job when Big Blue hired Brian Daboll.

          — Over is 11-0 in the Lions’ last 11 season openers; over is 7-0-1 in Kansas City’s last eight.

Last 20 years, the defending Super Bowl champ is 11-6-3 ATS in Week 1 the next year.
Last 20 years, the Super Bowl loser is 4-16 ATS in Week 1 the next year.

          — Baltimore Ravens have three divisional games in the first five weeks; they’ve got only one divisional game in December. Lamar Jackson missed their last six games last year, their last four games the year before.

          — Buffalo Bills have three consecutive primetime games in Weeks 8-10.

          — New Orleans Saints play their five AFC opponents in the season’s first eight weeks; they also don’t have any cold weather games, unless November 5 in Chicago turns nasty.

          — Detroit Lions have four primetime games, plus their traditional Thanksgiving game; high expectations for a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 1991.

          — This is the first time since 2016 that Jacksonville is favored in its road opener.

          — NFL Week 1 pointspreads:
          Lions +7 @ Kansas City
          Bengals -2.5 @ Cleveland
          Buccaneers +5.5 @ Minnesota
          Panthers +1.5 @ Atlanta

          Jaguars -3.5 @ Indianapolis
          49ers -2.5 @ Pittsburgh
          Texans +9.5 @ Baltimore
          Titans +3.5 @ New Orleans

          Cardinals +5.5 @ Washington
          Packers +3 @ Chicago
          Raiders +4 @ Denver
          Eagles -3.5 @ New England

          Dolphins +3 @ LA Chargers
          Rams +4.5 @ Seattle
          Cowboys -2.5 @ NJ Giants
          Bills -2 @ NJ Jets
