RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 2-Collectmythoughts 5-Sweet Mother May.
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Collectmythoughts broke poorly but then displayed good speed to move within range to the top of the lane before understandably fading out of the picture in a very fast, highly-rated race in her debut last month. A healthy series of three workouts indicates she came out of the race in good fashion, so with this drop into a restricted maiden special weight dash, the Brian Koriner-trained filly should be able to show her best stuff with a clean break from the gate. We like her on top but will also include the first timer Sweet Mother May, a good moving, athletic filly by West Coast from the Ron Ellis barn. She has dome some decent work in the morning, and while she’s probably not a quick sprinter type she could make her presence felt late.

RACE 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 3-Slam Diego; 5-Tiergarten
Backups/savers: 4-Rose Barton.

Forecast: Slam Diego didn’t get the best of runs (squeezed back early, in heavy traffic late) when fifth beaten only two lengths in a similar starter optional claiming turf miler in early April and with a clean journey today she’ll be a major player in this five runner affair. In a race that seems certain to be slowly run early, the Peter Miller-trained filly is likely to inherit an ideal stalking trip and then have every chance to wear down the projected pacesetter Tiergarten close home. The latter can be the controlling speed if her connections choose that strategy and given that type of trip the recent $50,000 claim by Steve Knapp could win right back, though she’ll probably need a career top speed figure to do so. Rose Barton is worth tossing in as a backup. She has overseas form that is good enough to beat this field, and with the switch to the barn’s “go to” rider Kent Desormeaux, the return to turf, and the addition of blinkers, the Irish-bred filly has a right to step forward considerably.

RACE 3: Post: 2:01 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Worcester
Backups/savers: 4-Smart Mo

Forecast: Worcester is listed as the 3/5 morning line favorite in this five runner maiden main track miler and based on speed figures he’s a complete standout in his first start since returning from Dubai and an unsuccessful (to say the least) run in the UAE Derby-G2 in late March. His recent workouts have been okay, nothing great, so he’s probably not the type to take a real short price on, though he’ll need to regress considerably from his winter form to blow this opportunity. Smart Mo definitely has some ability, but the barn hardly ever cranks up its young stock first time out, so whatever you get today you’ll likely see better next time.

RACE 4: Post: 2:36 PT Grade: B-

Backups/Savers: 1-Awesome Taylor

Forecast: Good Boo Joo is well-placed to regain her winning form in this restricted (nw-2) $32,000 claiming turf miler for fillies and mares. She exits a series of tougher starter allowance events with speed figures that are considerably better than par for this level, so with a projected pace stalking trip (or as the controlling speed if Awesome Taylor doesn’t go from the rail) the daughter of Grazen should have no excuses. ‘Taylor shows up for a tag for the first time since her debut in October of 2021 and will greatly appreciate the softer assignment. He best chance is to make the running from the rail and hang on in a field lacking in closers.

RACE 5: Post: 3:08 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Clooney; 8-Tiz Tok
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Clooney earned a career top speed figure (by far) when winning a restricted maiden special weight event over this track and distance last month and if he can turn in two alike the City of Light gelding should be capable of scoring right back in this starter optional claiming event. The lightly raced sophomore is guaranteed an ideal ground-saving, second flight and then be poised to pounce at the top of the lane. His John Sadler-trained stablemate Tiz Tok is the one he'll have to worry about the most. He was disappointing when beaten at 6/5 in the Turf Paradise Derby in mid-March but has been training like a much better type since returning from Arizona and his highly rated maiden $40,000 win two races back charts very well in this spot. Recent workouts indicate he’s ready for a significant forward move, though a good a trip from his extreme outside post may be a bit problematic.

RACE 6: Post: 3:40 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Please Focus; 8-Inch
Backups/savers: 3-Thunderheart.

Forecast: Here’s a fairly contentious grass dash that requires some coverage in rolling exotic play. Please Focus has the route-to-sprint angle that we like, and though he managed to hang on and win over a mile last time out he seems most effective around one turf, having earned a career top speed figure when capturing a quick sprint three races back under these conditions. Top rider Juan Hernandez stays aboard and knows him well and should have this Irish-bred gelding on or near the lead throughout. Deep closing sprinter Inch is usually too little and too late (he has two wins and seven seconds and thirds) but if a pace meltdown materializes the Violence gelding may be heard from in the closing stages. He has a prior win over the course and recent numbers that are competitive. Thunderheart earned a strong speed figure when winning a restricted $32,000 claiming sprint over this course and distance last month, and if the Keith Craigmyle-trained gelding can repeat that type of performance in this stronger starter’s allowance dash the son of Dasher may be able to win right back. But that’s hardly a sure thing, since the opening quarter (:22 /35) of that race was soft and today’s race potentially contains quite a bit more heat. We’ll include him as backup but nothing more.

RACE 7: Post: 4:11 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Organic
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Organic appeared home free after opening up in mid-stretch in a similar state-bred maiden sprint for fillies and mares earlier this month but hit a wall close home and was tagged in the closing stages. She shortens up a furlong today in her second start off a layoff, has worked twice since raced, and should be able to outrun this group unless one of the first timers is better than the works indicate. At or near her morning line of 5-1 the Neil Drysdale-trained daughter of Dads Cap is worth an aggressive play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 8: Post: 4:44 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Big Clare; 6-Sunshine Babe;
Backups/savers: 1-Madiha.

Forecast: The come-backing Big Clare is good enough to win this grass grab bag for California-bred first level allowance fillies and mares with her best effort, but her overall record (1-for-15 with nine seconds and thirds) makes her difficult to back with any degree of confidence. She is the ultimate one-paced grinder but has numbers from last year that are better than par for this level and she has run well off the bench in the past. Hopefully, her relatively brief work pattern at Los Alamitos will have her tight enough for a stable that excels (23%, strong ROI) with layoff runners. Sunshine Babe is usually a late factor but is another that has had a difficult time sealing the deal (1-for-19 with eight seconds and thirds). She actually has crossed the wire first on two occasions but was disqualified from a win last November at Del Mar. Madiha projects to enjoy a pace stalking trip from her good rail draw and may outrun her morning line of 12-1. She has finished first or second in four of seven career outings over the Santa Anita turf course and could easily hit the board again.

Pimlico Late Pick 4 Analysis: Friday, May 26

It’s the calm after the storm. Racing returns to Pimlico one week after the Preakness Stakes. The 50-cent Late Pick 4 remains intact and the Friday, May 26 payout could be rewarding to those who correctly navigate through 38 entries. Here’s a closer look:

PIM 6th race (3:10 EST) -- Many ways to go in this crowded turf test at 1-1/8 miles. TOSS A COIN is the safest play off a third-place finish the last time she ran on the lawn last fall. She finished behind Center Stage, a recent $50k runner-up, and ahead of Chelichna and Nibbles, who finished 2-3 in a recent $25k grass route. QUEEN TAPITURE looms a front-end danger from the rail for the always-dangerous Norm Cash barn. PROPER STORM appears an all-or-nothing type on the big class drop to begin her 5-year-old season. OSA and FEMINISTA broke their maiden going one mile on the turf.

PIM 7th race (3:43 EST) -- WYSOQUIET, whose dam was a stakes-winning sprinter of $179k, and STREET TOUGH, whose dam was a first-out MSW runner-up at Oaklawn, stepped it up a notch in their final preps for good first-out barns. UNDER THE OVERPASS, a $100,000 sales buy, is likely to outrun his workouts for Team Russell despite drawing the difficult inside post.

PIM 8th race (4:16 EST) -- SHASTA STAR overcame a shuffle into the turn and powered past the field to improve to 3-3 on the turf. She gets plenty of pace flow to rally into for a 24 percent ‘repeat’ barn. A GIRL NAMED JAC is a consistent sprinter nearing $200,000 in earnings and she, too, projects the right trip at a decent price. THRETLVLMIDNIT dueled with the 8-to-5 ship-in favorite and ‘gave way grudgingly’ in a longer turf sprint.

PIM 9th race (4:49 EST) – MIZWARRIOR raced in mid-pack but was no threat in the stretch in a one-mile turf race at Tampa Bay Downs that produced a next-out winner and two runners-up. He was claimed by a high-percentage local barn and gets in light-weighted and with Lasix for his return north. LUV YA BYE BYE was disqualified from a win at this level, then dueled hard and gave way in a pair of higher-tagged dirt sprints. He’s back in the proper spot and a must use on the ticket.

Charles Town - Race #6

#1 Storm Trappe	Nothing wrong with that sharp comeback try to graduate, and he might have some upside in the second start off the bench. Think this is a reasonable spot for him to step up and try winners.
#7 Ox Doc	He should be in line for a pretty good run with this group with some pace from the outside, and his only local try produced his first win at 3/5. Mild concern about him being in for this tag with competitive form against company in the state.
#4 Primetime Jet	He scored from just off the pace last time out, but he had not typically been able to pass horses before that, and I worry he'll be a bit overbet today while meeting another player or two who could keep him honest. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary	Storm Trappe faces winners for the first time off a pretty solid layoff run, and I think he might prove best of the forward players at a mid-range price. No argument from me on form with Ox Doc on the outside, either.

Charles Town - Race #7

#2 Gladriel	She needs to come forward here off the sharp debut win if she's going to land another right back, but she was obviously well meant in the first start and might still have some upside. Think the added ground might work in her favor, too. All that said on a solid lean, I bet she's going to get bet.
#6 Miss Fussy Pants	Moderate worry about the fact that she finds herself in the local debut with declining form, but she is only a few races removed from the kind of effort that would almost surely leave the rest running for second. Not quite sure here.
#7 Somebody Loves Me	She is still winless and eligible for easier, but her best stuff actually fits pretty well here for a potential share. Grinding effort might work well in this spot.
Race Summary	Gladriel rolled at 50 cents on the dollar in her career debut here back in March, and she should be able to find a really good spot right up on the splits while trying this two-turn trip. Feel like we know what the rest of these are at this point, but the top choice might have some room to grow.

Charles Town - Race #8

#2 Fortes	She's a pretty reliable fit at this kind of local level, and she'll get the win rider back up from the March score. The finale might be just competitive enough to keep the price playable here despite her obviously solid local form.
#1 Include the Beast	She's not too far removed from some races with better, and while I worry that she might get stuck with a tough forward trip from the rail draw, she has shown some ability to dig in late to stay for shares after battling early.
#8 Little Bit of That	Nobody's going to be surprised if she lands this, but she's not always the most reliable player in the final yards and is meeting some other pace in this spot. Think she'll be in hustle mode throughout while potentially overbet.
Race Summary	Fortes has run three good races since showing up over the local footing, and they've all come in similar conditioned claiming spots. I'm assuming she's going to hold her form and produce another solid effort from maybe a touch closer today.

He gets Karamanos and sheds the blinkers in his first start for a claiming tag. Bet to win and place and play a 4-7-10 exacta box.

OX DOC has a formidable shot to take this race. This horse has been constatntly running well recently. Have to sense that this one will do well following the quick turnaround. Ranked high in earnings per start at the distance/surface in this bunch. PRIMETIME JET - Must be given a shot - I like the figures from the last race. Looks very good for the conditions of this race today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races as of late. MIMS HAT TRICK - Has to be given a shot versus this group displaying very good figs as of late and an average speed rating of 69 under similar conditions. Win percentage one of the top in this field.

PIDIN - Rounding his way back into form. Each of his finish positions is getting better in his recent starts. Hernandez is right back for another contest today after getting on board this horse for the first time on May 7th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. A thoroughbred coming back this soon after a strong effort is a good sign.

DO THE GRIDDY - The probable favorite is shaky here with the lack of workouts. ARAMOS - Not probable for this horse to make a winning move with no success lately in a sprint event. Not probable that the speed rating he recorded on December 4th will be enough in this affair. TAYBO - Had to show me lots more in the last race. Never made much of an impact.

I think PEPPERMINT CLASS is a strong choice. Is a strong contender based on figs posted lately under today's conditions. Is a key contender - given the 79 speed rating from her most recent race. The average class rating of 78 makes this one tough to beat. WILL TAKE ROSES - Players using horses with this jockey and trainer duo have done solidly recently. Has been running soundly lately and should be close to the front end early on. DOCTOR ABBIE - Will most likely compete strongly in the pace contest which bodes well with this field. Put up a formidable Equibase Speed Fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair.
