Ellis Park – 4th race: 10-Normandy Hero (5-1). Post time: 1:13 CT

At first glance this appears to be a fairly competitive straight maiden sprint for juveniles but given a closer look the field really doesn’t look all that strong. Morning line favorite Top of the Street (3-1) has raced twice, most recently finishing second while earning a Beyer speed figure of 56, which is 12 points lower than par for the level. So, let’s examine the newcomers. Of the eight runners that are making their debuts, Normandy Hero clearly has the best credentials. From the first crop of the promising War Front stallion Omaha Beach, this colt shows a series of excellent workouts that should have him fit and ready for a barn that does extremely well with newcomers, and from a cozy outside draw under Flavian Prat and with a recent bullet workout at Keeneland (4f, :47.4b, fastest of 68) he appears cranked up and ready to win right now. At 5-1 on the morning line, the Rodolphe Brisset-trained homebred is worth a gamble in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

Laurel Park – 5th race: 6-Freeze the Fire (8/5). Post time: 2:29 ET

He somehow managed to get away at 14-1 in his debut but won like an odds-on favorite in a fast, highly rated maiden special weight sprint at Pimlico last month, doing so like a colt that can win on the raise and then go on to bigger and better things. By Army Mule’s sire Friesan Fire, this quick sophomore made the lead, held sway, and then galloped out full of run while leaving next out winner Dillinger in his wake. The Cathal Lynch-trained sophomore returned to breeze seven furlongs in 1:27 flat, so today’s extra furlong shouldn’t be an issue. At 8/5 on the morning line, we’ll make him a confident rolling exotic single.

Belmont Park – 5th race: 4-Northern Invader (6-1). Post time: 3:09 ET

Shows the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch pattern that always catches our eye, and that coupled with several other positive factors makes this maiden sophomore colt an excellent wagering proposition in this mile maiden event. Bred to move up considerably on grass (Collected, by City Zip) and with speed figures in his first two outings that are far superior to anything in this field, he seems certain to improve over a distance of ground for a trainer that excels (24%) with the stretch out angle. With Johnny V. taking the call in a race that projects to have moderate early splits, the Cherie DeVaux-trained colt should be able draft into a comfortable stalking position and then go on with it when given his cue. At 6-1 on the morning line, he’s a strong play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

The Meadowlands has a loaded 14-race card, and the headliner goes in Race 10, the Dave Brower Memorial Open Pace. The race was renamed after Dave's sudden passing last October. Dave's gone but not forgotten and he was a big part of harness racing coverage in general and at the Meadowlands. Unfortunately, I didn't know Dave well. But there was never a time I asked a harness racing question or for a recommendation on a New Jersey restaurant that he didn't quickly respond. Dave was a genuine guy that you never heard a bad word about.

The 0.50 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (8:25 PM EST)

2-Jiggy Jog S (7/5)-This top 4-year-old meets a champion 5-year-old in Bella Bellini and my lean will be to the younger lady. The Ake Svanstedt trainee has won both starts this year and made it look easy. If recent form holds true, she should be taking her 3rd picture this season.

Race 7 (8:50 PM EST)

6-Kobe's Gigi (15-1)-Grace Hill has been a winning machine but my play will be to spread and shoot against her at a track where she has won "only" 25% of her starts (16-4-4-1). This Nifty Norman trainee has a decent post and needs a trip but can compete it dialed on high. This will be the 3rd race off a sick scratch and will overlook the last start from post 9. Has won 2 of 4 here and gets a new set of hands in Brian Sears.
7-Treacherous Dragon (6-1)-Raced wide into a wicked pace and that didn't work in the last start at Wbsb versus Grace Hill. Dexter Dunn should be looking to get on the point and has hit the board in 14 of 16 at M1 with 4 wins.
9-Test Of Faith (3-1)-Makes her season debut and it will be the 2nd start on Lasix. The post is a challenge but can win from out here with a slick steer and if can be put in play off the gate.
11-Silver Label (9/2)-The Nick Gallucci trainee has been racing well and finished 2nd to Treacherous Dragon and Grace Hill in the last 2 starts. The 11-hole is no bargain but could get away with a close-up seat as Yannick Gingras on the rail horse is likely to leave hard to protect position. This will be its M1 debut and does good work at Wbsb racing near the top of the stack.

Race 8 (9:15 PM EST)

2-Bella Macchiato (9/2)-Has posted a win and a 2nd place finish in 2 starts in East Rutherford. Dunn should have this filly on the point or close to it throughout. Could make the most of starting inside of the morning line choice with the right trip.
8-Bond (6/5)-The race will probably need to go through this filly even from the 8-hole. Team Svanstedt entry has won 8 straight, dating back to last year. Could march to the top and not look back.

Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-It's Academic (2-1)-Likes the Big M winning 9 of 23 starts and should get a cozy trip with this post draw. Could get some revenge on 4-Venerate who hasn't raced since 5-13.
4-Venerate (5/2)-Changed to the Marcus Melander barn in November after a $410,000 sale and is a perfect 1-1 this year. Beat the one above and below in the Cutler on 5-20 at M1 on a sloppy track. Qualified on 6-17 and looked good so will assume all systems are go.
5-Rattle My Cage (6-1)-Will look for a price and comes off a good try in the Cutler to finish 3rd. Tim Tetrick takes the lines and has won 7 of 22 here. Draws a choice post and should be a player if brings a top try.

Six stakes races, including the Grade 1 $1 million Stephen Foster, crowd the docket Saturday at Ellis Park. The typical Churchill Downs fixtures are spread across the 11-race program that begins at 12:45 pm ET. The American Derby goes as Race 3, the Kelly’s Landing as Race 6, and all leading to an all-stakes late pick 4 in Races 8-11. As for the preliminaries, I’ll give long win looks to the likes of #2 Wadsworth in Race 3 and #1 Fortin Hill in Race 6.

As for the all-stakes pick 4, let’s get to work.

Ellis Park | Race 8 | Grade 2 $400,000 Fleur De Lis Stakes

There’s such little early speed in this race to help the late-running #5 Pauline’s Pearl that you have to take a stand against her while in sub-par form for her talents. #6 A Mo Reay wants to beat you; she’s a dogged competitor. If she gets alongside whoever sets the pace, it’s probably game over. #7 Heartyconstitution probably can make the lead if Tyler Gaffalione can get her back to her Summer ’22 running style, but that’s not a given.

Ellis Park | Race 9 | Grade 2 $400,000 Wise Dan Stakes

#4 Get Smokin’ is elite turf speed and was just unable to hold off #8 Set Piece in the Arlington at Churchill Down over this same distance. The presence of #9 Stitched with some early pressure, and potentially #10 Hozier (from a must-fire early draw), should ratchet up the heat. #2 Tut’s Revenge could flash some early exiting dirt sprints. That scenario makes it highly likely that #8 Set Piece will have even more of a pace target and increases his likelihood of victory in the re-match. Hate to say it, but it looks like a pair of short-priced Brad Cox favorites to start this pick 4. Perhaps 2X course winner #5 Play Action Pass gets a look moving back to Gaffalione and with some pace versatility.

Ellis Park | Race 10 | Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes

#5 Smile Happy could not have looked better in winning the Grade 2 Alysheba over a field arguably equal in quality to this one. His pace versatility will come in quite handy in a race where #6 West Will Power will be the target and pressers like #2 Stilleto Boy and #3 Speed Bias are drawn inside West Will Power with the chance to make this difficult. Tons of respect for West Will Power as well as late-runners #1 Proxy and #4 Rattle N Roll, but I’m riding with Smile Happy and going to keep this a very focused ticket. Also look strongly at the daily double with Smile Happy to the picks in the finale, a wager that won’t require you to sweat out two short-priced favorites previously to cash. I’m far more interested in the double than the pick four.

Ellis Park | Race 8 | $225,000 Tepin Stakes

The 3-year-old filly turf milers wrap the card. #4 Wonderful Lady was a miler in France and may have a better kick Saturday than in her two US starts going longer since her arrival. She will need some pace help, but could get it with #3 Heavenly Sunday, who looks solid on paper, likely to get some up front company. #6 Metaphysical was very competitive in the strong Gulfstream winter turf program. Her runner-up at Penn National last time saw Pletcher and Brown trainees in her rearview mirror, so it’s better than it may seem.

Ellis Park - Race #2

#8 Theroanrunner	She went backward in a hurry when sent two turns last time out, but she showed some promise in the debut run that suggests she's better than that, and I think the move back around one turn should work in her favor. Could see her spying the two likely chalks early.
#3 Pumpkin Scone	Tough to split this filly and the one who finished just behind her last out, but I think this one might have a little bit more upside into the second start. Guessing she gets another perfect trip.
#6 Absinthe	She figures to be right in the mix with Pumpkin Scone in the early stages again here, and she makes a lot of sense in this spot while factoring in some reasonable upside with the debut under her belt.
Race Summary	Theroanrunner might get just a bit overlooked in here after the hard fade going long last out, and I think she might be able to settle in the right kind of spot to bid into the lane.

Ellis Park - Race #3

#2 Wadsworth	He finished up well at Horseshoe Indianapolis last time around, and he might get another decent race flow in a spot with a few potential forward players. Nothing wrong with the recent running lines.
#5 Hidden Path	Tactical type might get the perfect trip behind some more committed pace players, and his pressing gear might leave him sitting on go almost the entire way. Maybe haven't seen his best yet.
#1 Mo Stash	He obviously has a little quality to him, and he stuck around nicely in that Grade II last time out, but I worry he's going to have to work for this a bit too much early on with Gigante breathing down his neck the whole way.
Race Summary	Wadsworth can probably sit just a touch closer this time around, but he should benefit from a few potential speed horses hooking up in the early stages. Tough today.

Ellis Park - Race #11

#5 Xigera	Likely chalk was a powerhouse in the comeback score in allowance company here last month, and she got bet a bit at 6/1 in the Breeders' Cup last year -- obviously some talent here, and probably some upside still.
#3 Heavenly Sunday	Nothing wrong with the recent form including the wire Grade II win last out, and she can run from off the pace as well if anyone wants to try to take it to her early.
#2 Safeen	She goes third off the break today after scoring the Horseshoe Indianapolis stakes win last out, and I suppose there's a chance we haven't yet seen her best. Not out of the question, but I really think the choice is going to be a handful today.
Race Summary	Xigera obviously has some class to her, and she got a perfect tune up with the easy score last time out while racing off the Breeders' Cup layoff.

Gulfstream Park - Race #1

#8 KRABI (1-1)	Takes magnified class drop, appears the best of a bad bunch.
#9 HEART OF THE BEAST (4-1)	New connections will try to solve troubled starting habit.
#3 SONG AND TAP (8-1)	Gets in light, barn does well with sprint-to-route and blinkers on angles.
Race Summary	The field is a combined 0-for-20 on Gulfstream’s all-weather surface, but KRABI, the daughter of multiple Grade I-winning router Lookin At Lucky ($3.3 million) is a deserving favorite. She was shut off in upper stretch while chasing the odds-on winner and got beat 4-1/2 lengths in a 5F debut sprint for $50,000. No excuses today, just a flat win bet and exacta tickets of 8-3 and 8-9.

Gulfstream Park - Race #6

#7 MY SHEA D LADY (7-2)	Solid work tab at Palm Meadows for solid first-out barn.
#2 CHEROKEE (5-2)	Second twice, then traded backstretch bumps with pace setter and tired in latest.
#3 WIN NAY (4-1)	Debuts for Nicks, who is 4-for-13 with a positive ROI in the last month.
Race Summary	MY SHEA D LADY shows a 5F bullet workout from the gate in the final prep for her debut. Her sire was a six-time graded stakes-placed earner of $830k and her trainer is strong with 2-year-olds. Bet to win and place.

Gulfstream Park - Race #8

#7 GREEK MOJO (4-1)	Won in first try on dirt, can get first run on main rivals from good post today.
#1 MAJOR PRYCE (7-2)	Ran evenly against multiple stakes-placed Charlie’s Wish in prior dirt try.
#4 UPSTREET (6-1)	Ran 1-2-3 at this level, angled 4-wide but flattened out versus runaway in latest.
Race Summary	GREEK MOJO led most of the way on the class drop and maintained her stretch lead despite drifting. She returns off similar rest and projects an ideal trip for her second start on conventional dirt. Bet to win and place and play a 1-4-7 exacta box.

6^th race [Dwyer (G3), 1 mi] – (2) Saudi Crown is unbeaten in two starts in Kentucky for Brad Cox and will now have to stretch out to a mile, but he is likely to do what Cox 3-year-olds do which is to win stakes races. (5) Fort Bragg moves back to the barn of Bob Baffert after running second by a neck in the Pat Day Mile (G2) on Kentucky Derby weekend. This was clearly the best race of his career, but the winner ran poorly in the Woody Stephens (G1) the next time out. (3) Harrodsburg broke his maiden in his debut in March for Rob Atras at Aqueduct then was beaten by a nose in an allowance earning a tie for the high speed figure in the field. (6) Joey Freshwater tried the turf last time and did not respond well after winning the Bay Shore and running third in a pair of other stakes.
8^th race [Alw 50000s, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (11) More Than Work (C) was bet down from 7-1 to 5-1 going longer than today’s distance, had the lead at the stretch call, and then finished second behind a return winner of an allowance for his third in a row. (2) Timbuktu finished second missing the win by a neck in his first start for Rick Dutrow. (6) Shinsun was a close fourth in his 2023 debut making up ground and should get a good set-up from a fast anticipated pace. (12) Kingfish Stevens moved to the turf and has run his two best races with a huge jump in speed figures.
9^th race [John A. Nerud (G2),76F] – (3) Weyburn returned to the best form of his career in his three starts this year including a stakes win at Gulfstream Park and should continue to move forward with the trainer change to Todd Pletcher. Three of his four victories were at seven furlongs. (1) Candy Man Rocket won 4 out of his last 5 starts with three firsts this year including the recent Runhappy (G3) at Belmont Park. He won his only start at today’s distance. (2) Three Technique won a high-level allowance at Churchill at the end of May. (7) Synthesis has four career wins going seven-furlongs. Last time he ran into the division leader Elite Power.
10^th race [NY, Md 40000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (6) Your Mission (A) was taken up at the break last time and then rallied very wide from far back in 12^th to finish second. (2) Miracle Mike moved to the turf, dropped in for a tag for the first time, and finished third behind the Hot List horse. (1) Aula has two starts this year where he raced on the grass for a tag and made two big improvements in speed figures. (7) October Bliss did his best running when he pressed the pace and both times finished second.
Best bets: Saudi Crown (6^th); Weyburn (9^th). Best value: More Than Work (8^th); Your Mission (10^th).

1st race – (7) Sapphire Nights was a game second last time and should prevail here. (4) Our Keepsake could be a factor in her debut. (5) Whatta World will be tough in a claimer. (2) Bootsy’s Merlot fits in nicely here. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-7. Doubles: 2-4-5-7 with 1-3-4-6.
2nd race – (3) Pumpkin Scone (C) was bet down from 3-2 to even money and finished second in her debut. Gets the job done here. (1) Fancy will be a main factor from the rail. (4) Mo Blooms seems set for a solid effort in her debut. (6) Absinthe put in a bullet work for this and cannot be overlooked. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-6.
6th race – (2) Bango has been no worse than second in his last six starts and looks best here. (3) Miles Ahead was second to the top choice in May and should be the main foe. (7) Tejano Twist will be a threat in the final furlong. (1) Fortin Hill should make his presence felt from the rail. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-7.
8th race – (6) A Mo Reay has been facing Grade 1 company and has a class edge. (2) Moon Swag was hurt by a wide trip and should be closer here. (1) Bellamore will benefit from a turf to dirt switch. (5) Pauline’s Pearl is a threat on her best try. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-6.
10^t^h race – (4) Rattle N Roll owns three straight graded stakes wins and can make it four in a row here. (1) Proxy looked good winning the Oaklawn Handicap but rarely wins in back-to-back starts. (5) Smile Happy was a sharp winner of the Alysheba and can handle this field. (6) West Will Power has the kind of speed that will make him a major force here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Main Contenders:

I’ll start with Camp Hope (3), who opens at five to one odds in this 10 horse field even though he’s coming off a career-best effort when winning on June 1. That win, in a classified allowance race on the grass at Churchill Downs, was every bit as good as the win two days later by Set Piece (8) in the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes on the same course. The reason I can say that is Camp Hope rallied from seventh of 10 after a half-mile, to sixth with a quarter-mile to run, then two second with an eighth of a mile to run, before starting to draw away late by a length, earning a 115 Equibase Speed Figure in the process. Two days later Set Piece rallied from last of six after a half-mile, to fifth with a quarter mile to run, to second with an eighth of a mile to go, to draw away late by the same one length margin, earning a 117 Equibase Speed Figure. Set Piece won the 2021 Wise Dan with a 112 figure effort and has won two graded stakes since, while Camp Hope won the non-graded Bryan Station Stakes as a two year old in the fall of 2021, won a high level allowance race the following spring, and was winless in five starts before his breakout win last month. Considering Camp Hope won back-to-back in October of 2021, now that he’s back in winning form, he can win again and is definitely the horse to bet, if not to beat, in this race.
Set Piece (8) must be used as a contender on any multiple-race tickets we play such as the double, pick 3 or pick 4 based on the fact he’s making his third start after being off for more than five months and is a multiple stakes winner. He was winning for the second time in a row when taking the 2021 Wise Dan but since then he’s had some really good race but hasn’t put two good races together even once. Geroux was up for his win last May (2022) in the Dinner Party Stakes, and for his win last month in the Arlington Stakes, with the former earning Set Piece a 115 figure and the latter 117, both good enough for a big piece of the purse here if not the winner’s share.
Tut’s Revenge (2) is a longshot play I cannot ignore because even though he has much less chance to win than either Camp Hope or Set Piece, his starting odds of 20 to 1 make betting him worth the risk. Set Piece may have won 12 of 27 races to date, with just two seconds, and Camp Hope may have won five of 17, with one second, but Tut’s Revenge has shown a much more consistent record of 11-10-9 in 46 career starts. Just the 21 for 46 first or second record is quite impressive in my book, and as opposed to most of these, Tut’s Revenge has experience, positive experience at that, on the Ellis Park turf. He led until the final strides and was beaten a neck last July in a non-graded stakes on the course then returned just two weeks later to run huge once again when leasing in the stretch and beaten a neck and a head on the wire. He’s absolutely a fighter, and as such we could be regretting not at least betting a token amount on him to win and including him on any exacta or trifecta tickets we play in this race.
For exacta and trifecta tickets, we can also use the second and third finishers behind Set Piece from the Arlington Stakes, which are Harlan Estate (1) and Get Smokin (4).

For a smaller amount, or even a token $5 or $10, Tut’s Revenge (2) can be bet to win at 6 to 1 odds or more. You might also want to bet Tut’s Revenge to place, or play a $1 exacta or all over Tut’s Revenge.
