    RACE 1: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Next Revolt; 10-Settecento; 7-Universal Payday
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 2-Far West

Forecast: It’s probably wise to go to school on opening day at Del Mar to see if any track biases may exist. The dirt strip can be anything, fast or slow, pro rail or rally wide. You really don’t know until you watch a few races and even then it could change midway, so be careful. Next Revolt is racing in good form and is a three-time winner over the local track, so we’re expecting he’ll fire another big shot. The veteran gelding employs an effective stalking style and should be able to accommodate any bias or race flow. Settecento drops a notch below his claim level for an outfit that can get aggressive down here. First or second in six of 14 career starts, the Doug O’Neill-trained gelding is a tad light on speed figures but projects to enjoy a comfortable second flight journey. Universal Payday is an interesting Florida invader seeking valuable ship-and-win purse money. He’s usually a day late and a dollar short but as a one-paced grinder should have a decent chance to at least hit the board.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 2:34 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 6-Dr. Venkman5-Uncle Reg; 3-Bye Bye Ray
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Central Dispatch

Forecast: Dr. Venkman has trained like a pretty nice colt for Mark Glatt and looks ready for a major effort first crack out of a box. A :59 4/5 gate work at Santa Anita seven days ago - View Workout Video - caught the eye, so in an open fray let’s go with the fresh face from a barn whose debut runners often perform better than they work. Uncle Reg got beat by a pretty nice colt when a distant second in a fast, highly rated maiden sprint at Santa Anita in late May. He rushed up inside to set quick fractions but then proved no match late while managing to save second money despite being pretty much spent in the final sixteenth. We’re expecting the lightly raced son of Lea will be a bit fitter and stronger today and stick around longer. Bye Bye Ray displayed decent ability when second in a hot sprint at Oaklawn Park in February but was subsequently disappointing in a route race and was subsequently put away for several months. He arrives from his home base at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico with a series of workouts that should have him plenty fit, and based on his best speed figure the once highly regarded son of Ransom the Moon should fit nicely in this circuit.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 3:06 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-North East Star ; 7-My Moon
    Backups/savers/Underneath: 2-Sakura Flavor; 12-Strikingly

Forecast: North East Star did quite well to finish a willing third in a fast and productive grass dash after costing herself whatever chance she may have had with a slow start and a wide trip. It’s a bit concerning that it’s taken her two months to make it back to the races, but her recent training track drills have been solid - View Workout Video - so we’re expecting this Phil D’Amato-trained import to take a significant step forward while stretching out to a distance she’s sure to handle. Hopefully she leave with her field today and not have too much to do. My Moon is listed at 15-1 on the morning line and is better than that. She displayed good speed from the rail in her debut in a strong turf sprint last month before gradually weakening to wind fourth (beaten four lengths) while clearing needing the race, and today on the stretch out she might be quick enough to establish the running and take this field a very long way. The daughter of Malibu Moon doesn’t strike us as a speed crazy type, so we’re hoping that she can get the trip.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 3:38 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Tenth Street Don; 2-Salute to Wilson; 7-Careless Kitten
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Curly Esa.

Forecast: This restricted (nw-3) $16,000 claiming sprint is something of a mess, so a spread strategy is required. Tenth Street Don took forever to break his maiden but now he’s seeking his third win in a row with rising speed figures and must be viewed as a strong contender. Additionally, his recent work tab is solid and strong, indicating that another forward move is likely. Santos to Wilson has been away since last October and returns at his lowest level ever. The Eric Kruljac-trained gelding has back numbers that can win and has been successful over the local main track in the past, but after a bullet half mile drill (:46 2/5) five days ago it appears the for sale sign is up. Yes, he can win, but we suspect his connections don’t think he’s a long term proposition. Careless Kitten always has preferred to run second (eight times) rather than win (twice), but he likes this main track and may be the most dangerous of the closing types.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 4:08 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-Don’t Worry Boss
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Smile Baby Smile

Forecast: Don’t Worry Boss ran a winning race in her debut but settled for second money in a quick race for the level when finishing four lengths clear of the rest at Golden Gate Fields last month. The daughter of Clubhouse Ride should be tighter and tougher with that effort under her belt and goes for a barn that excels (23%, strong ROI) with the second time starter angle. A sharp series of drills over the Pleasanton dirt track since her race adds fuel to the fire, so at 3-1 on the morning line in a moderate California-bred sprint for juvenile fillies there should be plenty of wagering value to be found in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 4:38 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Liberty Forever; 12-Helladic
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Ambivalent; 10-King Apollo.

Forecast: Helladic appears to have the most early zip in the field and has run well over this course and distance in the past. He’s also a first time Lasix user and exits two stakes races that were clearly stronger than this first level allowance dash. Unfortunately, he drew the extreme outside 12 post position and will have to be sent hard to get over and secure a good forward position. Let’s just say that he’d better not miss the break. Liberty Forever is a perfect one-for-one over the local lawn and the works at San Luis Rey Downs give strong indication that the quick son of Dixie Chatter is fit and ready to fire a big shot in his first outing since November. He’s a bit faster on speed figures than Helladic and the Peter Miller barn has powerful layoff stats (24%) so when it boils right down to it, he may be a bit easier to trust. Gotta use them both on the main ticket, though.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 5:08 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 11-Deservedly; 8-Clooney
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Deservedly is hung way out in the 10-hole in this main track starter allowance miler and that will make his task quite difficult, but if he can get over a secure a decent stalking position the Mark Glatt-trained gelding still might be good enough to win it. Second with a career top speed figure in a similar affair at Santa Anita in late May, the son Nyquist shows a healthy and sharp work tab to have him primed for a major effort. No worse than second in his last four starts, the lightly raced 5-year-old probably has further improvement in him. Clooney, a distant third in the same race our top pick exits, probably can step forward a bit. He gets a break in the weights with the switch to bug boy Aguilar and is most effective when held up early and allowed to run late. If the main track is playing kind to his running style, his chances certainly will increase.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 5:38 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Mr Fisk
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Classical Cat; 9-Conclude; 7-Agency

Forecast: Mr Fisk will be trying turf for the first time in this year’s edition of the Oceanside Stakes, but his female family is all grass, so we suspect this son of Arrogate will move up a ton with the switch in surface. An excellent runner-up to the Haskell-bound Geaux Rocket Ride in the Affirmed Stakes last time out, he has since worked brilliantly since - View Workout Video - while giving every indication that he’s prepared to produce another significant forward move. Listed at 8-1 on the morning line and with main track numbers that make him the one to beat, the Bob Baffert-trained sophomore offers an excellent gambling proposition in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

    *

    RACE 9: Post: 6:08 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Reiquist; 5-Sir Atticus; 2-Kingdom Heart
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-Del Mar Jerry.

Forecast: It’s hard to say how much Reiquist beat when he broke his maiden in late May in just his second career start, but he certainly did it the right way and the number came up strong. This could be a decent sort of colt for Tim Yakteen, so we’ll put him slightly on top in a much better than par race for the level. Likewise, we really liked the maiden win by Sir Atticus last month at Santa Anita and expect the son of Gormley to build on that favorable impression today. The John Shirreffs-trained colt didn’t break well but quickly got in gear to stalk the pace, responded wide into the lane, and then drew clear with authority while earning a speed figure 20 points better than his first start. Today’s extra half furlong shouldn’t be an issue, and his morning line of 5-1 is quite enticing. Kingdom Heart may be the quickest in the field and will take them as far as he can. Today’s extra half furlong makes his task a bit more difficult, but he still must be feared due to his role as the potential controlling speed.

    *

    RACE 10: Post: 6:38 ET Grade: A-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Twist
    Backups/savers: 7-Lure Him In.

Forecast: Twist was his own worst enemy (broke slowly, very rank early) when a sharp runner-up (and probably best) in his U.S. debut at Santa Anita last month and anything close to that performance today minus the self-caused trouble should be good enough to handle this second level allowance field over a mile on grass. Recent drills have been quite smooth and strong - View Workout Video - and his inside post guarantees a ground-saving trip, so at 3-1 on the morning line we’ll make him a strong win play and rolling exotic single.

      RACE 1: Post: 1:10 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Same Old Fears; 2-Shards
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: We have no video on workouts in Kentucky for Same Old Fears so we’re basically flying blind on the Wesley Ward-trained juvenile, but the raw times look good, so we suspect this son of Uncle Mo has enough ability to be a major player in a race that doesn’t appear to be particularly strong. The colt’s dam (Bombo Genesis) wasn’t much but her best foal to date (King of Miami) broke his maiden sprinting on grass in New York and was a listed stakes winner over a distance of ground at Canterbury Park, so that probably explains while this homebred colt is debuting on grass. Shards breezed like a rocket ship at the OBS March sale (a bullet quarter mile in :20 3/5) but had no visible mishap when fading to third at four and one-half furlongs in his debut as the favorite at Gulfstream Park last month. Maybe turf will help.

      *

      RACE 2: Post: 1:44 ET Grade: B
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Rosebug; 1-Braganza
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Rosebug shortens to six furlongs in this entry-level sprint for fillies and mares after weakening late under pressure when second in a similar affair at Belmont Park in mid-June. A game win at this distance two races back produced a career top speed figure, so if the Bill Mott-trained daughter of American Pharoah can duplicate that performance today she should be able to return to the winner’s circle. Braganza is lightly raced, fast on figures, seeks her third straight score, and is likely to do her best work from off a second flight, ground-saving position. This six furlong distance might be a tad sharp, but with clear sailing she should have every chance in the final stages.

      *

      RACE 3: Post: 2:20 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Classic Mark; 5-Order of Magnitude
      Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Classic Mark won a starter’s allowance sloppy track affair at Belmont Park in his first start off the claim for Linda Rice 17 days ago and with that condition out of the way the son of Classic Empire returns to the claiming ranks while trying to steal another purse. Most class drops following a win can be viewed suspiciously, but not from this barn. Order of Magnitude brings from South Florida good recent form that charts very well at this level. The Carlos David-trained gelding has good tactical speed and is reunited with “win rider” Luis Saez.

      *

      RACE 4: Post: 2:52 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Blazing Sevens; 2-Lost Ark
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: It’s pretty hard to pick against Preakness St.-G1 runner-up Blazing Sevens in this year’s renewal of the listed Curlin Stakes for 3-year-olds over nine furlongs on the main track. The Chad Brown-trained son of Good Magic is fast on figures, and his narrow defeat to National Treasure (with Derby winner Mage behind him) legitimizes his 4/5 morning line status. Lost Ark is intriguing. The son of Violence won his first two starts as a 2-year-old including the Sapling Stakes like a potential star, but then got exposed when finishing far back in both the Breeders’ Futurity (sixth, beaten 10 lengths) and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1 (eased, finished last). His winning return last month in an allowance race at Monmouth Park produced a career top speed figure, though at times during that four length romp the Todd Pletcher-trained colt appeared green and unfocused. If the light switch ever goes on, lookout.

      *

      RACE 5: Post: 3:26 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 8-War Prince; 7-Sinaloa; 1-Bankingonachance
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Ripe for Mischief

Forecast: Here’s a messy maiden claiming turf sprint for older New York-bred runners in which no result would surprise. Best advice is to spread as deeply as your budget allows. War Prince has the route-to-sprint angle that always catches our eye, and his only prior one-turn outing wasn’t half bad (a closing third in an off-the-turf, wet track affair). He flattened out in a pair of subsequently outings over a distance of ground but under these conditions the Rob Atras-trained son of War Dancer could do some damage from off the pace at 6-1 on the morning line. Sinaloa was sluggish early and then flat out given a race while closing a gap late without threatening in his debut at this level last month. Jose Ortiz stays aboard, so we’re expecting a much more serious effort today. Bankingonachance received some play (6-1) in his debut when an even fourth in a similar affair in mid-June. Flavian Prat rides him back, and from his rail post the son of Central Banker should be given a chance to step forward.

      *

      RACE 6: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 4-Royal Spirit; 9-Catch the Party
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-O Captain

Forecast: Royal Spirit tries his hand for the first time at a mini-marathon distance and we suspect he’ll enjoy it. A one-paced grinder in middle distance affairs, the son of Into Mischief always tries hard (first or second in seven of 16 career starts) and projects to inherit a good stalking position and then have every chance when the pressure is turned on. At 8-1 on the morning line, the Linda Rice-trained colt offers a reasonable gamble. Catch That Party is logically the one to beat. He shows excellent recent form with strong speed figures in New York-bred races that chart quite well in open company, and he’s proven over the course, having finished in the frame in five of six prior starts, including two wins,.

      *

      RACE 7: Post: 4:34 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 11-Create Trouble; 6-Treaty Obligation
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Three of the main contenders in this seven furlong maiden special weight sprint for older horses exit the same race that was won by Mount Up at Belmont Park in mid-June. The field finished in a heap – 6-Treaty Obligation, who wound up third, had a bad trip and was best – but the overall impression was that the race itself was below standard. If you’re inclined to use something out of the race, we’d suggest Treaty Obligation, who was off slowly and was stuck in traffic much of the way before finding room late while staying on gamely. However, Kentucky shipper Create Trouble may be ready to win, and at 8-1 on the morning line, offers a legitimate price chance. The son of Into Mischief was tagged late when second over a wet track in a mile affair at Ellis Park, and with only slight forward move today could be set to seal the deal in his second start off a long layoff (barn has good stats with this angle). From his outside draw, jockey Tyler Gaffalione can pick his spot and move when he wants to.

      *

      RACE 8: Post: 5:10 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Artorius; 2-Speed Bias
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Artorius captured the Curlin Stakes over this track and distance last year, and though he hasn’t won in three starts since the Chad Brown-trained colt drops into the second level allowance ranks and should greatly appreciate the softer assignment. A respectable fourth with a strong figure in his comeback in the Salvatore Mile at Monmouth Park in mid-June, the son of Arrogate seems sure to improve with that tightener behind him and being reunited with “win rider” Irad Ortiz, Jr. There should be no excuses today at 5/2 on the morning line, which seems like a fair price. Speed Bias is the likely controlling speed and given that type of trip he could take this field a very long way. His tough beat (a nose) in the Pimlico Special-G2 two runs back will make him hard to beat today, and in his most recent outing (off the board the Stephen Foster-G1) he was simply out of his element. This group certainly isn’t.

      *

      RACE 9: Post: 5:44 ET Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Queen Picasso
      Backups/Savers/Underneath: 4-Luguria; 7-Utilization Rate

Forecast: Half of the 10 runner field in this year’s edition of Lake George Stakes-G3 for 3-year-old fillies is trained by Chad Brown. And there isn’t one of them that doesn’t have a chance. We’re guaranteed a nice price if we look elsewhere, so how about the unbeaten Queen Picasso? She broke her maiden two turning at Gulfstream Park in good style in March and then shortened to seven furlongs at Belmont Park in the Soaring Softly S.-G3 and came away in clever style after pressing the pace to register a sharp score with complete authority. From her inside draw in this inner turf miler the Christophe Clement-trained daughter of Kingman almost certainly will be the controlling speed, and if she can sneak away without undue pressure there’s a likelihood that she’ll never look back. At 6-1 on the morning line, a reasonable gamble is available. We must note that our top pick was cross entered in the Ontario Colleen S-G3 at Woodbine on Saturday and as of this writing it is unknown which race she will compete. If she runs tomorrow, we’ll elevate Luguria and Utilization Rate to the top line of the Lake George.

      *

      RACE 10: Post: 6:18 ET Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Prix de West; 1-Bourbon Chase; 9-All Good Here
      Backups/savers: 8-Tony O; 12-Lt. Mitchell

Forecast: Prix de West finished nowhere in his debut sprinting on main track in April at Aqueduct, but he’s not a sprinter and probably not a dirt horse, either. So, let’s give him another chance in this below average middle distance turf affair for state-bred maidens. The son of Classic Empire appears to be training well since his race and under these conditions could leave his poor debut far behind. He’s 8-1 on the morning line and nothing in this race really should be lower than that. Bourbon Chase is a seven race maiden with six in-the-frame finishes, so while he might lack a winning punch the son of Practical Joke seems likely to be somewhere in the fray, especially from his good inside draw that assures a ground saving trip. This will be his first try on turf; who knows if he’ll like it? All Good Here finished a close second in a similar maiden grass affair at Belmont Park in late June and not much more will be needed today. It wasn’t much of a race, but with just three starts behind him the son of Palace Music has a right to continue to improve.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis

        July 21, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands begins the week with a 14-race card. The headliners are 2-year-old trotters competing in New York Sires Stakes action. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 10 (10:05 PM EST)

2-Duke Of Walner (5/2)-This was Tetrick's pick over #6 and did put in a nice effort in his season debut. Beaten even money chalk could reward backers tonight with a smooth trip.
7-Hankins Hanover (7/2)-Comes off 2 big effort, the last ending with a picture. Could be bet down and looks like the one to beat despite leaving widest of all.

        Race 11 (10:30 PM EST)

3-Congress Hill Eva (6-1)-This mare ships in from Philly and comes off a couple dull tries but fits with this kind. Can win if returns to the same form shown in 4 races here in May. This is a scattered bunch and should offer a price. Has hit the board in 6 of 12 at M1 with 1 win.
6-Baby Take A Vow (9/2)-Has been facing much better and is the only filly in the race but can compete against this group of older trotters. Should have enough gate speed to race near the top of the stack and could offer a square price.
9-Lady Ruth (7/2)-This is another dropper who should relish the company. Has won 26% of its starts over the last 2 years, will take a swing and hope TMac can find a live cover flow.

        Race 12 (10:55 PM EST)

2-Donato Patriot K (6-1)-Didn't have much success back in May and June facing this kind at M1. But started outside both times and recent form has been good. Joe B could work a cozy trip from this post and have the price shot in the mix at the wire.
3-Iwon't Backdown AS (5/2)-Broke in the Graduate Final but had good tries in the previous 2 starts versus that kind. Should be a threat against this softer group and Tetrick can have this 4-year-old in play off the gate.

        Race 13 (11:20 PM EST)

5-Watch Me Now N (3-1)-Burned cash at even money on 6-30 but was good the previous 2 starts at this level. Draws a nice post, gets a positive driver change in Todd McCarthy and has won 4 of 16 at M1. Using and will look for an improved effort.
6-Heavens Showgirl A (9/2)-Missed a month, changed barns, and now bumps up in class after posting a win. This mare banked some decent money in Canada last year and has posted 7 wins in 27 starts. Andrew McCarthy is between the pipes and should fit well in a battle of brothers.

        0.50 Late Pick 4

Saratoga Pick 4 Ticket | Friday, July 21

          July 21, 2023 | By Frank Carulli
          SARATOGA PICK 4
          Friday, July 21

With one eye on the weather forecast and another on a deep and talented lineup of entries, Saratoga Pick 4 players will have to keep their fingers crossed this Friday, July 21, as they dissect three turf races and an 11-horse Maiden Special Weight sprint that encompass the 50-cent wager. Here’s a closer look:

SAR 7th race (4:34 EST) -- With little separating those that have run, three first-time starters handled by Hall of Fame trainers and another by a four-time Eclipse Award winner, go deep in the first leg of the sequence and the only one scheduled for the main track. CREATE TROUBLE is my top choice off a strong seasonal debut at one mile when he posted faster middle fractions than a same-day, $80,000 allowance optional claiming race, only to get caught late.

SAR 8th race (5:10 EST) -- ARTORIOUS, a restricted stakes winner at this distance at Saratoga last year, made his seasonal debut in a one-mile Grade III stakes at Monmouth, dueling between rivals on the turn before he was passed by three rivals who were at least 4-wide at some point in the race. He finished a head behind Trademark, who posted a 96 Beyer next-out in winning a $100,000 stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis. SPEED BIAS led the entire way in the Grade III Pimlico Special two back until he lost a bob at the wire to favored Rattle N Roll (8-19, $1.7 million), a four-time G-III winner who beat Speed Bias again in the G-I Stephen Foster. CURBSTONE and THE REDS are both proven allowance runners, three-time winners at 1-1/8 miles and good prices in today’s field.

SAR 9th race (5:44 EST) -- Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the Saratoga turf races during opening week and more rain is in the forecast this week. Trainer Chad Brown could have as many as five starters in the featured Grade III Lake George if it remains on the grass. With fingers crossed, use LIGURA and REVALITA on the Pick 4 ticket. LIGURA backed off the pace after an alert start, looked for running room mid-turn and closed with a 7-wide flourish to prevail in the $150,000 Wild Applause at one mile on the Belmont Park lawn. REVALITA rallied behind a pair of wire-to-wire longshot winners to finish in the money in the Grade II Wonder Again and Edgewood stakes, respectively, at longer distances on the grass.

SAR 10th race (6:18 EST) – LT. MITCHELL should be on or near the lead despite breaking from post 12 and can go a long way in a field that features only one runner-up finisher in 17 combined starts on turf. He backed off the early pace from the rail last out, waited for room at the top of the stretch, then steadied in traffic in mid-stretch while the top pair were in full flight. PRIX DE WEST took some money but was outrun in a debut 6F sprint that produced three next-out winners and two runners-up. The son of Classic Empire should appreciate the added ground and stepped it up with a :47.3 breezing workout for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, whose runners fire fresh.

          Suggested 50-cent Ticket
          SAR 7th Race: 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11
          SAR 8th Race: 1, 2, 3, 7
          SAR 9th Race: 4, 5
          SAR 10th Race: 7, 12
          Cost for 50-Cent Ticket: $56

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Del Mar - Race #3
#7 My Moon Think there are a handful in here with a claim on the top spot here, and this filly might offer a decent enough price while stretching out at second asking. Could see her getting a nice trip wherever her rider wants to place her near the top.
#2 Sakura Flavor Her last two have been pretty solid and established a baseline that makes her competitive with these. The draw should lead to a cozy trip while racing in behind the speed, and she makes sense for at least a piece of this.
#5 North East Star She might have some upside in the second start of the season, and a cleaner getaway would really serve her well today to find a good spot. Thinking she's going to be at least a little overbet, but she makes sense.
Race Summary My Moon ran fine in her debut when just flattening late, but she's probably tighter this time around and might trip out near the top while trying two turns.
            Del Mar - Race #8
#1 Classical Cat He'll have to fire fresh off the December layoff, but there are a few forward players drawn out wide in this field, and that may put him in a great spot with some tactical pace behind the more committed frontrunners. Lots to like.
#10 Escape Artist Nothing wrong with the form here, and he stacked up well with stakes company back in May at Santa Anita. He'll probably run just a touch early for position, but his speed is positional enough that he shouldn't have to hustle too hard.
#5 Ah Jeez His first start back from Dubai went pretty well when beaten just a couple lengths at 34/1 in stakes company in Louisville, and he is versatile enough to adapt to the race flow, but I think his best chance would come from settling back a bit and trying to make one run in hopes the wide-drawn speed types will set an honest tempo.
Race Summary Classical Cat gets a strong lean for me, so I'm hoping he's ready to roll off the layoff with a little bit of class in the past running lines and a potentially perfect trip waiting for him from the fence.
            Del Mar - Race #10
#10 Tesoro The overall page looks pretty messy, but that's mostly due to the six bad races on the page all coming in stakes company. His better recent turf form has come at Golden Gate, but that might help keep the price playable as he gets some class relief again today.
#1 Twist Wouldn't be any surprise to see him land this off a good North American debut last month, but I worry he's a bit overbet against an interesting group. Could get a nice run if covered up.
#2 Astronomer I'm really interested to see his comeback off the November 2021 break, as he went to the bench off a 30/1 stakes upset Breeders' Cup weekend and faced some decent players in that 2-year-old campaign. Think he's logical player if he's ready.
Race Summary Tesoro was only beaten a couple lengths in a stakes spot over this course last year, and he might be a better fit with these than it looks like at first glance. Think he's one of a couple really intriguing players to watch in the finale.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Colonial Downs - Race #5
#7 FLY FLY AWAY (7-2) Rode rail, failed to sustain bid in final sixteenth, drop could be the answer.
#3 BACKWOODS BOOGIE (8-1) Steady numbers, stretches out, three-time runner-up on Colonial lawn.
#9 CELERITY (6-1) Asmussen trainee rallied into slow pace to finish third, still winless since 2021.
Race Summary FLY FLY AWAY is winless the last two years, but he gets class relief and could sit a perfect stalking trip after he was cooked in a fast pace as the beaten favorite. He rode the rail and made a good middle move the last time Gallardo was in the saddle. Bet to win and place.
              Colonial Downs - Race #6
#2 BEACH HOUSE (4-1) Parlayed speed into 3-for-6 record on Colonial grass, makes seasonal debut.
#8 EVER SO D’WILD (8-1) Re-gained momentum after steadying but flattened out badly of soft turf.
#10 HOT CAROL (8-5) Buried weak field at Mountaineer Park, tries turf for first time on class rise.
Race Summary BEACH HOUSE resumes her lightly-raced career off a similar layoff to when she won last year. She won turf sprints on the front end the last three times Rocco Jr. was aboard. Bet to win and place.
              Colonial Downs - Race #1
#5 HEAVY WEIGHT (5-1) Running out of chances but should be in hunt at decent price nonetheless.
#6 NOT AS LUCKY AS US (5-2) Followed moves of winners in last two dirt routes at notch above.
#4 OVER THE BORDER (8-5) Settled for minor spoils in last three starts at Penn National.
Race Summary HEAVY WEIGHT raced up close and held on for minor awards at three distances in his last five starts on the main track. He ranged up but flattened out from post 10 in a turf sprint last out. He’s 0-for-23 but will have every chance to contend in this field. Bet to win and place.

                    # 6 JUNGLE BEAST 8/1
MUAD'DIB looks solid to best this field. Runco has this gelding racing well and is a decent selection based on the very good Equibase Speed Figures put up in sprint races lately. This gelding with Bocachica in the saddle makes him a solid contender. With a respectable 92 speed figure last time out, will clearly be a factor in this contest. HERO'S MAN - Wagerers get an edge when playing this trainer in a dirt sprint race. With Larrosa aboard him, this gelding should be able to break out sharply here. JUNGLE BEAST - Sound average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this racer a solid choice. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding.

                      Colonial Downs - Race #5 - Post: 3:39pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 86

                      Rating:

                      #9 CELERITY (ML=6/1)
                      #4 VINTNER (ML=10/1)
                      #7 FLY FLY AWAY (ML=7/2)
                      #2 CLOSER LOOK (ML=9/2)

CELERITY - The return on investment when Cheminaud and Asmussen team up is tremendous. This gelding notched a nice fig of 85 in his last affair. That speed fig should be high enough to prove victorious in today's event. Running on the grass today, you should review a horse's class. This one has the top number in the bunch. VINTNER - Yanez is solid in turf routes. This equine should have no alibis if he doesn't win. FLY FLY AWAY - This gelding should give a strong account of himself in today's race. CLOSER LOOK - Have to give this mount a long look. In recent races, has posted the best speed figures on the turf at this distance. This gelding is in first-rate physical condition right now. Ended up third in the last race and comes back soon. Recent speed ratings show strong pattern of improvement.

Vulnerable Contenders: #11 CITY PLAN (ML=3/1), #5 SOUND THE CHARGE (ML=8/1), #3 BACKWOODS BOOGIE (ML=8/1),

CITY PLAN - This mount gave a lackluster effort last time out finishing third. Can't expect a reversal of fortune in today's event. SOUND THE CHARGE - This mount just hasn't looked sharp recently. BACKWOODS BOOGIE - If today's race shapes up right, all the front runners will force a pretty mean pace duel early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners. When looking at today's Equibase class figure, he will have to record a better fig than in the last race to battle in this turf route.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #9 CELERITY to win if you can get at least 4/1 odds

I lean toward HAPPY CLOUDS here. Must be carefully examined - I like the figs from the last race. Has performed soundly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 68 avg speed rating. This equine has a wonderful win percentage in dirt sprints. LIQUIDATOR - Has very good Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet here. With a strong 73 speed rating last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. HIDEWRIGHT AWAY - Cash has a very strong win percent with horses racing in dirt sprint races. Looks very good against this group and should be one of the early speedsters.

                          Rating:

                          #6 BODOCK (ML=6/1)
                          #7 CLASSIC MARK (ML=9/5)

BODOCK - This colt has been claimed each of his last two starts. He figures to be tough in today's race. Horse has improved at least two Equibase speed fig points in last 2 races. I look for that trend to continue in this race. CLASSIC MARK - Rider and trainer do well when they join forces. Ortiz and Rice have been dependable together. Ortiz rode this thoroughbred for the initial time last time around the track and comes right back in this race. I like to play this handicapping angle, a horse coming back off a good outing within the last month.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PORTOS (ML=5/2), #5 ORDER OF MAGNITUDE (ML=3/1), #4 EMPIRE RIDE (ML=8/1),

PORTOS - I cannot play this habitual non-winner. Gets the job fulfilled now and then. There may be a set back this time, after the strong effort last time out. ORDER OF MAGNITUDE - When looking at today's class rating, he will have to notch a better fig than last time around the track to compete in this dirt route. EMPIRE RIDE - Will be tough for this entrant to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the questionable contenders list.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #6 BODOCK to win. Have to have odds of at least 5/2 or better though
