Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card with the 0.50 Pick 5 starting in Race 5. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9

2-Mickey Gee N (3-1)-Was scratched on 7-17 and had missed almost a month before the last start. Did close nicely in last, the Hudson barn is heating up and might be ready to post the 1st win of 2023.
4-Windsun Ricky (7/2)-Put in an even effort at Philly off a sick scratch last week and did beat this kind on 7-3 at YR from the same post. Bartlett gets the assignment and that shouldn't hurt the chances of taking the 7th picture in 23 starts in 2023.

Race 10

5-He's Special (5/2)-Sat the pocket all the way around in last on a sloppy track. Was interfered with down the stretch, it looked as if hooked wheels trying to come through down the rail. Lost by less than 2 lengths and might have won with a smooth trip. Could get the 2-hole again, this time behind the one below, and could catch the leader down the lane.
6-Imma Bee (3-1)-This is the 1st start in the Adamczyk barn, just missed by a neck last time, and Joe B grabs the lines. Should be leaving again and looking to land on the point. If the new pilot steals a quarter this 5-year-old might not be denied.

Race 11

4-Alluneedisfaith N (5/2)-Came 3rd to Open company in the slop and tonight regular driver Kakaley takes the lines. Drops and should be a main player.
5-Whats Stanley Got A (6-1)-Was bet down to 2/5 on 8-1 against NW15000L5, took control and didn't look back. Bumps up a few levels but does come off a quick mile. Offers a price, hasn't had a long history in the US, only 5 starts. Not sure if we have seen the best from the 7-year-old. Willing to take a swing at the morning line price.
6-Moonlight Shadow (7/2)-Beat up on the $75k claimers winning by 5 lengths on 8-7 from the 2-hole. Could stalk or look to get on the point. Either plan can work, and it would be no surprise if won right back.

Race 12

4-Never Say Never N (5/2)-Makes the 4th start for the Alexander barn and dops into a condition that could lead to a picture. Could be bet down and may look to leave and land on the point. Kakaley sticks, will look for an aggressive steer and a big try.
7-Rock The Devil (7/2)-Recent form has been dull but beat better here back in June and just missed the top check 3 starts back. Should relish the company and has the gate speed to be in put in play when the wings fold.

Louisiana Downs - Race #5

#11 Mary Who	Hoping this one gets overlooked in a spot with a few bigger name barns lined up, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her make a little noise today for a team doesn't start many in this kind of spot. Take a look on the track and tote.
#8 Sierra Blanca	She showed some chasing pace and stayed on well enough in the debut run, and she can be tough here if she's any tighter with that first run under her belt. Price gets a lot shorter today.
#1 Cinco Gal	Tactical speed should find herself in another good spot, but I worry that she'll be a bit overbet again in here and that she has already failed to punch home from a good spot in a couple of starts. Obvious player.
Race Summary	Mary Who goes first time out in a spot with a handful of horses who have landed underneath shares already, and I'm wondering if she might be a sneaky face right out of the box.

Louisiana Downs - Race #6

#7 Mr. Four Sevens	He has a right to be tough at this kind of level after facing better in every race on his page, and he is versatile enough to show a little positional speed and still tuck in behind a few more committed pace players.
#2 Dried Pepper	Something more like the two-back run might keep him in the frame with these, and I wonder if he might be able to find a really good spot without getting caught up in an early pace battle.
#3 Big Country	He's capable of something better than he showed last time out, but I still wouldn't want to be here at too short a price as he makes his way back down the claiming ladder.
Race Summary	Mr. Four Sevens looks like a good fit with this group, and I think he's going to find the right kind of trip in a race with a few sharper forward players who are unlikely to stick around late.

Louisiana Downs - Race #7

#11 Scrappy Artie	He gets a really good draw for his pace-spying running style, and he should be able to sit on the outside flank of the other speed. Lots to like from a race-shape perspective as he gets back on the main.
#5 Biloxi	He has some versatility in his running style that should serve him well in this spot, and he has shown some reliable form that he has carried to a few different tracks. In the mix late.
#8 Heza Pickle	Think he has a chance to get past some of these late while turning back and getting out of stakes company, but I think it might be a big ask for him to get all the way over the top today.
Race Summary	Scrappy Artie gets a solid lean for me from a high draw, as he's quick enough to sit right off the speed drawn further inside. I'd find something like the 9/2 ML price appealing enough.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1

#1 LISA MARIE (3-1)	Slow start, finished behind co 8-to-5s, class drop could make winning difference.
#4 DEISE DELIGHT (8-5)	Has loyal following, can stalk and pounce from favorable post with Morales.
#2 CAN I GET AN AMEN (7-2)	Wired field at odds-on at this level, might need to find passing gear.
Race Summary	LISA MARIE, bumped and slow into stride, finished third behind the co-favorites for a higher tag last out. The fractions for the 6F race were faster than an open $8,500 claimer at 5-1/2F on the same card. Not crazy about the rail draw but she should get ample pace to rally into. Bet to win and place.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4

#6 MULSANNE (5-2)	Best of bad group of maidens, plenty of route experience, third start of cycle.
#3 GOLDEN PHASE (5-1)	Lugged in through final furlong, gets in light, fewer starts than most of rivals.
#7 AMARETTO SOUR (2-1)	Faced better at various venues on the turf but is 7/0-0-0 on main track.
Race Summary	MULSANNE is a strong play in a field that is a combined 0-for-86 with four seconds. She rallied inside in her second start off a 10-month layoff and finished third to the class-dropping 2-1 winner. Wouldn’t expect 5-2 but do expect a victory. Bet to win and place.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7

#1 YUUGIRI (4-1)	Multiple stakes winner fires when fresh, looks to remain unbeaten at 6F.
#8 MARISSA’S LADY (5-2)	Tuned up with easy allowance win over track, excels on all-weather surfaces.
#5 READY TO VENTURE (7-2)	Lightly-raced 5yo won at four venues and distances in last eight starts.
Race Summary	YUUGIRI won her last two non-graded stakes at 6F, from on and near the lead, with Santana Jr. aboard. She chased speedy Grade III winner Pretty Birdie (4-13, $521k) in the Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park and won going away on a sloppy track. She is the choice to win again in the $80,000 Satin and Lace Stakes.

I think about TOO LATE for this race especially at a long price. His earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone makes you take a look at him. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong speed figures (59 average) at today's distance and surface recently. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase speed figs which have been respectable - 58 avg - of late. EUSEBIO - Looks very strong against this field and will most likely be one of the front-runners. Have to think this equine will run well again this time around. ROCKYMOUNTAINTWIST - The average class rating alone makes this horse a key contender. Is a sharp contender based on figures recorded recently under today's conditions.

EMPTY ENVELOPE - Have to give this filly a chance. Ran a nice race last race out within the last 30 days. I like when a thoroughbred has dropped in class at least 5 class points like this one did last time around the track and then runs against a similar field right back. Rice must've found the right level.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 AMARETTO SOUR (ML=2/1), #6 MULSANNE (IRE) (ML=5/2), #3 GOLDEN PHASE (ML=5/1),

AMARETTO SOUR - Tough to wager on any racer to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the risk. This horse likes to be in the money, but doesn't usually win. Leave out of the top spot. MULSANNE (IRE) - Tough to keep following this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse. This vulnerable equine ran a run-of-the-mill rating last out. She shouldn't improve and will probably suffer defeat in today's race running that figure. GOLDEN PHASE - This filly finished out of the top three on Jul 17th and wasn't close last time out either. Exhibited indications of physical problems in the event on July 31st at Presque Isle Downs. Doubtful that the speed figure she recorded on Jul 31st will be enough in this race.

I think DEVIL OR ANGEL is a decent choice. Ran a solid last race. Going in a dirt sprint race gives this gelding a formidable shot. Always seems to be close up at the finishing post. SON OF DARKNESS - Has solid front-end speed and will probably fare strongly against this group. He should definitely be given a shot given the quite good speed numbers. WAHEEL - Has performed admirably as of late in sprint races, posting a nifty 72 avg speed figure. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Barrow running at this distance are the top in this group of animals.

#4 WORTHY OPPONENT (ML=7/2)

WORTHY OPPONENT - Trainer Huffman moves this one down the class scale to face a less competitive field. Look for a good race given the class advantage. Nice return on investment for this rider and conditioner duo. This gelding should be at the fitness peak, this far into his form cycle.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SERENDIPITOUS (ML=9/5), #3 TIDE RISING (ML=2/1), #6 ACCURATE (ML=9/2),

SERENDIPITOUS - 9/5 is not priced right for any horse in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint race lately. I'd like to see better recent showings with morning line of 9/5. TIDE RISING - Not easy to support any questionable contender in a sprint affair if he hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple of months. Awfully hard to play this questionable contender when he hasn't been showing any gumption recently. ACCURATE - Finished third in his most recent race with a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this group.
