Race 4 (3:06 pm ET)

#2 King Curlin (6-1 ML)

Twice runner-up over this course, his effort earlier this meet was rock-solid behind a Pletcher favorite from Saratoga who wired the field with slow fractions. Made multiple runs in that race and was just second-best. I like the quick turn-around after a slow-paced race that wasn’t overly taxing, and note this trainer is 10: 3-1-1 off a week or less rest in recent years.

#8 Seisai (6-1 ML)

Irish filly loaded with deep-ground experience never really fit in on the west coast where it’s all top-of-ground racing. Should appreciate change of venues and notice her best California race was the mile at Santa Anita in which she actually got a fair pace to close into. Really like this pairing with rising star jockey Cristian Torres for Cherie Devaux (2 wins, 2 seconds in last 4 tandem bids since August 22).

Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Race Course Late Pick 4 Analysis

This is the opening weekend for the fall meet at Hawthorne Racecourse and tonight there is an 18-race card with a first post at 4:30 CST. The headliners are Illinois bred two-and three-year-olds competing in Illinois State Fair Stakes. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 15. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 15 (9:10 PM EST)

2-Lou Sangreal (9/2)-Comes out of the same race as the one below and was also off a month. Was used to get on the point but faded down the lane and should do better here. Has 3 second place finishes in 6 starts in Stickney, Casey Leonard takes the lines and that should help.
5-Radiant Diamond (6/5)-This filly was off a month between starts and was 10 lengths back at the first call. Rallied and lost by a neck in a dead-heat finish. Has a win and a 2nd place finish in 4 starts here and should be tuned up for a big try at a short price.

Race 16 (9:30 PM EST)

6-Little Chipper (2-1)-Short field and it should come down to the 2 chalks battling each other down the lane. My lean will be here, drew off in last at DuQ and should offer a bit more value than #5-Lous Private Eye.

Race 17 (9:50 PM EST)

1-Fox Valley Leah (4/5)-Winner in 6 of 7 this year deserves the favorite's role but not going to concede this contest. Loses Atlee Bender and missed hitting the board in the only start here. Using but looking to others for some value in what could be a chalky sequence.
2-Fox Valley Kia (7/2)-My take is Kia has enough speed to beat the odds-on favorite but can't afford a bumpy trip. Has gotten off to a slow start this year but banked over $131,000 in 2022. Has hit the board in 3 of 4 races at Haw and has posted 2 wins.
7-Rona Mae (12-1)-Willing to toss last at DuQ after being off a month and has done good work here (7-4-1-0). There could be a few who leave and if the pace is hot Travis Seekman could have the Ray Hanna trainee rolling down the lane at a big price.

Race 18 (10:10 PM EST)

3-Roan By Design (15-1)-At this price will overlook the last race with about a month between starts. Has 2 second place finishes in 4 races at Haw. Could get a cozy trip behind the program chalk #5.
5-My Daddy's Revenge (7/5)- Won his last start off an efficient trip and was the even money choice. John De Long takes over for Leonard who steers for his father's barn. This is the logical choice who will be a short price and has won 3 of 5 at Haw.
6-The Magical Woman (5/2)-Came off the bench and almost wired the field at DuQ. The Erv Miller trainee does good work in Stickney hitting the board in 6 of 7 with 2 pictures. Doesn't have the same credentials as the program chalk but should be in the hunt.
7-Seniorita Mouse (10-1)-Will look for another price who has been in the mix in the last 8 starts. Will need her best race but does have experience on this oval (6-2-1-1) and seems to be improving.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 9-Calabrian Queen; 7-Yolo Calls
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Calabrian Queen plummets to the bottom rung maiden $20,000 level, tries dirt for the first time, and shows the route-to-sprint angle. The Doug O’Neill-trained daughter of Peace and Justice also lands the cozy outside post while switching to Ramon Vasquez, so she has plenty in her favor and should have every chance to earn her diploma in her eighth career outing. Yolo Calls adds blinkers for the first time and also nosedives into her soft spot to date. Under speed rider Edwin Maldonado, the Peter Eurton-trained filly projects to be on or near the lead throughout.

RACE 2: Post: 2:02 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): Mirinda
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Mirinda has been entered and scratched a couple of times and finally draws into the body of the field in this maiden special weight sprint for California-bred juvenile fillies. The daughter of Mitole has displayed excellent speed in morning drills, the kind of which is good enough to win a race such as this. The Gary Mandella-trained filly is listed at 3-1 on the morning line and offers good wagering value at or near that price in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

RACE 3: Post: 2:33 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 5-Derecho Dandy; 3-Mega Moon
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 7-Battle Call; 9-Goldeneye.

Forecast: Derecho Dandy is a first-off-the-claim play for trainer Doug O’Neill and is long overdue for a win while being raised from the restricted (nw-2) $32,000 ranks to this starter allowance affair in a sign of confidence. In the frame in his last pair and with speed figures good enough to beat a field in this league, the son of Connect projects to settle in the second flight and have every chance from the quarter pole home. At 6-1 on the morning line, he’ll offer good wagering value. Mega Moon looked good beating maiden $62,5000 foes over this course and distance in late July while earning a career top speed figure. This is a slightly tougher spot and further improvement might be necessary, but the Peter Miller-trained son of Frosted picks up Flavian Prat and is lightly raced with another forward move possible.

RACE 4: Post: 3:05 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 8-Halone; 4-Ur in Trouble; 3-Sandy Bottom; 1-Nothing Like You.
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Halone has trained like a decent sort of filly for trainer Bob Baffert and looks extremely live and well-meant in this juvenile dash for maiden fillies. The daughter of Justify probably will do her best eventually over a distance of ground but may be good enough to win at first asking against this group. Ur in Trouble was out of her element when overmatched in the Sorrento Stakes-G3 behind the speedy Dreamfyre but she returns to reality today against maiden juvenile fillies and should bounce back with a good effort. Her strong runner-up effort at this level in her debut two runs back charts well with these, so with two nice breezes since raced, including a sharp half mile gate drill (:47 3/5, seventh fastest of 92) seven days ago the daughter of Maximus Mischief may be the one to fear most. Sandy Bottom has displayed decent speed in morning trials leading up to her debut and should be a live item first time out. From the first crop of Omaha Beach, the Michael McCarthy-trained filly is a “must use” at 7/2 on the morning line. Nothing Like You will need to deal with the rail post position but she removes blinkers for her second career start and most likely has improvement in her after finishing a willing runner-up in what was admittedly moderate heat in her debut last month.

RACE 5: Post: 3:37 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Ngannou; 2-Sharpazano; 5-Lake Superior
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Ngannou has displayed excellent speed in the a.m. for trainer Michael McCarthy and is bred for grass on both sides of his pedigree. In a wide open fray, he seems like a live item and should be forwardly placed based on his gate drills. The recently gelded Sharpazano, a close fourth debuting on grass in a five furlong dash last month, stretches out lands a good inside draw. He’ll try gate-to-wire tactics, for sure. Lake Superior brought more than a million dollars at auction last year as a Keeneland yearling and makes his debut two turning on grass for trainer Bob Baffert. The son of Quality Road is a full brother to Stillwater Cove, a stakes winner on grass, so this type of race makes perfect sense. His dirt drills have been moderate at best, but we suspect he’ll perform better on the surface over which he is bred to prefer.

RACE 6: Post: 4:08 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 7-Windribbon; 2-Let’s Acclimate; 4-Super Chief
Backups/savers: 9-Oubabe.

Forecast: Windribbon has a win over this track and distance earlier in the meeting and recently ran better than the line will show when third at this level last month. A real pro with in-the-money placings in 18 of 30 career starts, the son of Sway Away likes to settle in the second flight and produce a late kick and will have every opportunity to do just that according to the projected race flow. Regular rider Umberto Rispoli stays aboard, so at 5-1 on the morning line he’ll be offering a reasonable gamble. Let’s Acclimate makes his seconds start off a layoff and should be fitter and tougher today after flashing good zip but weakening late in a grass affair last month. With blinkers being added, there will be no waiting around today, so if the lightly raced gelding can grab control early he could hang around for a long time. His one prior dirt outing resulted in a clever win at Los Alamitos. Super Chief has been sparingly raced but he’s another adding blinkers for the first time and on numbers he’s a solid fit with his best effort.

RACE 7: Post: 4:39 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Boltage
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none. none.

Forecast: Boltage was quite impressive breaking his maiden over this course and distance last month and anything close to that effort today should be good enough in this year’s edition of the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes-G3. The Richard Mandella-trained son of Bolt d’Oro displayed good tactical speed and sharp acceleration when called upon and accomplished his maiden win like a gold with a very good grass future. He’s listed at 2-1 on the morning line and is likely to go lower as a logical win play and rolling exotic single.

RACE 8: Post: 5:10 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Mastering; 2-Devil Be Me; 8-Ghazaaly.
Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Mastering was a winner at this level when trained by Bob Baffert last month and makes his first start off a $40,000 claim by Steve Knapp over the same course and distance. If he can turn in two alike, the son of Street Sense can score right back though regular pilot Juan Hernandez is replaced by Hector Berrios, who, of course, is more than capable. Devil Be Me is slower on numbers than our top pick but is lightly raced and improve and could easily be this good after easily handling state-bred foes last time out at this trip over this main strip. Ghazaaly might be better than his morning line of 15-1 and probably should be tossed in somewhere. He was overmatched and out of his element in the marathon Cougar II Stakes-G3 last time out and before never really threatened on a surface (grass) he may not have cared for. If you go back three races, he’s dangerous.

RACE 9: Post: 5:40 PT Grade: B+
Main ticket (in order of preference): 6-Bolden
Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Bolden launches a comeback and if returns as well as he left the Phil D’Amato-trained horse will be able to extend his perfect winning streak to four. Away since June of last year, the son of Square Eddie is extremely fast on figures and his recent workouts indicate he’s in pretty good shape for a barn that has strong stats with layoff runners. He’s 8/5 on the morning line and on pure form looks every bit of that.

RACE 10: Post: 6:09 PT Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 10-Prince of Monaco
Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Prince of Monaco seeks his third straight after demolishing his foes in his first two outings, most recently in the Best Pal Stakes-G3 with a 103 Beyer Speed Figure that makes him the fastest juvenile in North America up to this point. He’s destined to leave at 1/5 on the tote and will be unplayable other than a free bingo square in rolling exotic play.

RACE 11: Post: 6:38 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Petcoff; 8-Uncle Oscar; 4- Bye Bye Ray
Backups/Savers/Underneath: 6-Quintecents.

Forecast: Petcoff stretches out for the first time after three solid turf sprint performances with improving speed figures in each outing. The Tim Yakteen-trained son of Munnings should get the trip and projects to inherit and good second flight, stalking trip and have every chance from there. Uncle Oscar has an improving pattern and seems likely to be dangerous from off the pace. With the switch to Mike Smith, the Dave Hofmans-trained colt seemed primed for a significant forward move. Bye Bye Ray stretches out and tries grass for the first time. The son of Ransom the Moon has rising speed figures and rates a look under these new conditions.

Del Mar - Race #7

#8 Endlessly	He did just about everything right in the debut run when showing tactical speed, sitting on hold when needed, and finding a nice turn of foot to punch home when clear. Think he can handle this next step.
#3 Boltage	Think this race might end up pretty top heavy with these two runners, but they've got the best resumes in here and both come off solid wins. This guy couldn't have won any easier when switched to the turf last out and should be in line for another nice trip right near the front.
#9 Bear River	Think there are some more obvious players for this spot, but I wonder if this guy might be ready to move forward just enough to snag a lower share of this. He made a mild move before flattening out in the debut run and could sustain it better today.
Race Summary	Endlessly and Boltage look tough to get past on paper for me, but the former might be just a tiny bit better price. A couple other players could impact this, but I really get the feeling that one of these two will land it off those recent scores.

Del Mar - Race #10

#1 Prince of Monaco	Nothing to write home about on the price that'll be waiting here, but his first two starts have both produced powerhouse scores, and he didn't work too hard to take the local prep for this by better than four.
#3 Mirahmadi	He has been a bit underwhelming so far based on the hype, but he probably winds up in a decent spying spot and might be able to find a middle move that works for him one of these days. Not impossible.
#7 Mary's Boy Bolt	He moved up nicely when rallying around two turns last time out, and he would benefit if a few of the serious forward players were to hook up in the early going -- but even then, I'm not sure exactly how serious that tempo will be.
Race Summary	Prince of Monaco should find a cozy spot tracking the pace from the inside draw, and he has done nothing wrong through two starts so far. Guessing he handles these again at a short price.

Del Mar - Race #11

#6 Quintecents	He didn't show much in the comeback run, but that came going short on the grass, and he owns a couple pretty sharp route tries in the past. Hoping for some logical progression in the second start back while getting more ground to work with.
#7 Lahaina Flavor	He was just kind of plugging along late in that debut try here last month, but I imagine there is a bit of upside to find today with that race out of the way. Interesting finisher for a piece at a price?
#3 Petcoff	He wouldn't be any kind of surprise, but I wonder if he's really going to move up around two turns or just find it a tougher trip at which to stay late. Capable, but probably not for me.
Race Summary	Quintecents has a little positional pace in a race with some major players who want to do their better running late, and I think he might offer a playable enough mid-range price.

The speed figure of 80 from her last race looks strong in here. BLAZE AWAY N HIDE - Appears to have a quite good class edge based on the latest company kept. Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this equine look formidable in this competition. MY GOLDEN DAY - Has posted solid speed figs in dirt sprint races in the past. Investors should probably take a good look at this one as this mare has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group.

Rowe has her trained soundly to break promptly out of the starting gate. FAMILY IS GOLD - This filly has a very good win percent in dirt sprint races. Ranked high in earnings per start at the distance/surface in this field of horses.

MIDNIGHT MOONSHINE - I prognosticate a setback for this horse in this event. GLOBAL CHAIRMAN - Didn't finish in the money on July 22nd at Woodbine. Followed it up with another lackluster try. In any race of 5 1/2 furlongs, I like to back a contender that has been on the board in sprint contests recently. Registered a run-of-the-mill speed rating last time out in a $25,000 Maiden Optional Claiming race on August 17th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that figure. CORONATION BOY - No picnic to play any vulnerable equine in a short distance event if he hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple of months. Showed very little in the last affair. Really can't expect any improvement today.

MY BOY PADDY - A definite class advantage goes to this horse. A good sign he will be very competitive in this race on the grass. Beato was aboard this gelding last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. Rivera adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a marked improvement. GOOD KNIGHT NILE - Jockey hops right back aloft after getting to know the thoroughbred by riding last time around the track. That's always a big time angle. Always be careful of the longer priced animal when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race.

JARDANI - Substandard speed rating last time out at Parx Racing at 1 mile 70 yards. Don't feel this less than sharp equine will improve too much today. CRABS N BEER - You figure that this equine is going to win just because he's always close. Just doesn't win often. WHAT DOES IT TAKE - The victory on August 4th probably isn't good enough to beat these today.
