                    Jack Jones

Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Kansas State -5

The Kansas State Wildcats won 10 games and the Big 12 Championship last season. They have 13 starters back from that team with eight on offense, including QB Will Howard. They have picked up right where they left off last season with a 45-0 win over SE Missouri State as a 28.5-point favorite and a 42-13 win over Troy as a 14.5-point favorite, covering their first two spreads by a combined 30 points.

The 29-point win over Troy was very impressive when you consider Troy went 12-2 last season with the only losses to Appalachian State on a hail mary and an 18-point loss at Ole Miss. The Wildcats have one of the best offensive lines in the country, and their front seven looks strong again as they have allowed just 38 rushing yards per game and 1.4 per carry through two games.

That makes this a bad matchup for Missouri, which clearly relies heavily on the run to move the football. After failing to cover in a 35-10 win as 27.5-point home favorites over South Dakota, the Tigers barely escaped with a 23-19 win as 21-point home favorites against Middle Tennessee State. That's the same Middle Tennessee State team that lost 56-7 to Alabama as a 39-point dog in their opener.

Missouri averages 43 rush attempts per game compared to just 22.5 pass attempts per game thus far. The Tigers struggled to move the football on the ground against lowly Middle Tennessee. They rushed for just 112 yards on a whopping 46 carries for an average of 2.4 yards per carry. They won't be able to run against this much stouter K-State defense, either.

Kansas State blasted Missouri 40-12 as a 7-point favorite last year. They rushed for 235 yards on 43 carries while holding Missouri to 94 yards on 35 carries. That game got out of hand due to four interceptions by Missouri. I don't expect the rematch to be as one-sided, but I do think Kansas State is going to win by a touchdown or more to cover this short 5-point spread with ease.

The Wildcats are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games as favorites. Chris Klieman is a perfect 7-0 ATS as a favorite of 3.5 to 10 points as the coach of Kansas State. Bet Kansas State Saturday.

                      ASA

#122 ASA PLAY ON Buffalo +3 over Liberty, Saturday at 12 PM ET - We like this situation with Buffalo at home for the 2nd straight week off an embarrassing 40-37 loss vs Fordham last week. While it may look like a terrible loss, Fordham is decent (top 25 FCS team) that has won 19 of their last 25 games. The Bulls jumped out to a quick 21-3 lead in that game and outgained the Rams on a YPP basis but ran 20 fewer offensive snaps. Fordham scored with just over 2:00 remaining to take the 40-37 lead but Buffalo actually led the game for 49 of the 60 minutes. That unexpected loss gives us some nice value here. If this game was played in week 1 Buffalo would have been right around a 1 point favorite and now they are +3.5 vs an overvalued Liberty team. The Flames are 2-0 under new HC Chadwell but they haven’t been overly impressive. They beat a bad Bowling Green team by 10 points in week 1 but struggled to do so despite the Falcons turning the ball over 5 times (1 turnover for Liberty). Despite that disparity in turnovers, that was a one score game late in the 4th quarter. Last week the Flames had a huge revenge game vs New Mexico State and won 33-17 despite the YPP numbers being dead even. They again benefitted from 3 NMSU turnovers so now Liberty opponents have coughed up the ball 8 times in 2 games! Now after that revenger (lost 49-14 to NMSU last year) the Flames go on the road for the first time this season against an 0-2 team that really needs this win. Buffalo faced Chadwell’s old team, Coastal Carolina, last season so they’ve seen this offense which gives them a nice advantage. Liberty’s defense has been shredded on the ground allowing 6.6 YPC (128th nationally) which allow Bulls QB Snyder (459 yards passing and 5 TDs with 0 picks) to have a big day. Bad defense in a bad spot laying point on the road? No thanks. Buffalo played Wisconsin very well in the first half in week 1 before the Badgers pulled away late and they are desperate here with their next 2 games on the road. They catch Liberty a bit fat and happy with a 2-0 record and Buffalo pulls the upset.

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Penn State/Illinois OVER 48.5

Penn State's offense is loaded this season with eight returning starters plus QB Drew Allar, who is completing 78.2% of his passes for 529 yards with four touchdowns and no picks in two games. They scored 38 points against West Virginia in the opener and then 63 points against Delaware last week. Illinois was one of the best defensive teams in the country last year, but they lost their coordinator to Purdue and a lot of talent to the NFL. The results have been troubling as they gave up 28 points and 416 yards to Toledo in the opener and 34 points and 541 yards to Kansas last week. Penn State can pretty much name its score in this one and will do the heavy lifting in us cashing this OVER ticket. But I like what I've seen from the Illinois offense as well, putting up 30 points on Toledo and 23 on Kansas with the dual-threat QB Luke Altmyer playing well thus far. He is completing 68.5% of his passes for 408 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions, while also rushing for 139 yards and two scores. Give me the OVER.

Yes, Jeff Brohm is an offensive mastermind. He has Louisville averaging 47.5 points and ranked fourth in the nation in yards per game. The Cardinals are 2-0 for the first time since 2017.

Impressive ... so far. But now the Cardinals have to step up in defensive class facing Indiana at neutral site Indianapolis after playing Georgia Tech and Murray State. Much of Louisville's season statistics are skewed by its 56-0 win against Murray State. Jack Plummer is a decent quarterback, but he's far from elite.

Indiana is shaping up to have one of the better defenses in the Big Ten. The Hooisers held Ohio State to 23 points and beat Indiana State, 41-7, last week with the Sycamores' only score coming on a fumble return.

The Hooisers hold a secret weapon, too: Punter James Evans. He's second in the nation in punting average at 53.4 yards.

Indiana isn't flashy. The Hooisers, though, can play ball control and their defense gives up the 15th-fewest yards per game in the country. Thanks to Evans, the Hooisers can frustrate the Cardinals and win the battle of field position. That's enough for me to back this Big Ten underdog in this double-digit point range.
