by Jeff Siegel, 1stbet.com Handicapper & Analyst

    Grade Descriptions:
    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred or pass
Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 4-Talklessworkmore; 5-Fore Flag; 8-Don’thinkjustdoit.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 1-California Boy.

Forecast: Talklessworkmore gets top billing in this state-bred first level allowance turf miler, but his chances depend upon his securing a front-running trip without undue pressure. If that happens, he should be tough to catch but if he’s pressured early, he’ll be vulnerable. Fore Flag may be the most dangerous of the closers but he’s just 1-for-17 with nine seconds and thirds and isn’t one to trust. Don’tthinkjustdoit was graded stakes placed as a 2-year-old but hasn’t been seen for more than a year. We have a feeling he might need the race, but he did win his debut, so you know he’s capable of firing fresh. You should probably toss him in somewhere. Tread lightly here.

    *

    RACE 2: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: X
Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Coffee in Bed
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Liberal Lady.

Forecast: Coffee in Bed was overmatched in the Torrey Pines Stakes (she finished a distant fourth) but she’s where she belongs today so we expect she’ll regain her winning form. The Richard Mandella-trained daughter of Curlin ran quite well in her two previous starts over the Santa Anita main track and simply should outclass this first level allowance main track miler for fillies and mares. She’s 8/5 on morning line and probably will go lower.

    *

    RACE 3: Post: 2:00 PT Grade: X
Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Rugelach
    Backups/savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Rugelach demolished a high priced maiden claiming field at Del Mar in her first start since arriving from the East and was promptly claimed by Ron Ellis, who wheels her back protected in this starter allowance turf miler. She won her race gate-to-wire, but we suspect she’ll settle into a stalking position and be just as effective from there if the situation calls for it. Listed at 8/5 on the morning line and likely to go lower, she’ll be a short price in the win pool and as a logical rolling exotic single.

    *

    RACE 4: Post: 2:30 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-California Tiger; 5-Logon to Win.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: California Tiger shows up in a maiden claimer for the first time and may have found his winning level. The Smiling Tiger gelding also sports the ever popular blinkers off angle and has numbers that fit very well in this league, so it would seem the Jeff Mullins-trained California-bred is strictly the one to beat, though not offering a whole lot of value at 2-1 on the morning line. Logon to Win, a seven race maiden, finished a fair-to-moderate second at this level at this trip at Los Alamitos last month. A similar effort today should at least land him in the frame.

    *

    RACE 5: Post: 3:00 PT Grade: B-
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Laudatory
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 9-Thermal.

Forecast: The known element doesn’t impress so let’s take a stand with a fresh face. We have no video on Laudatory (she’s been prepared exclusively at Los Alamitos), but the circumstantial evidence suggests she may have enough ability to win at first asking in this juvenile turf sprint for fillies. The Phil D’Amato-trained daughter of Cairo Prince recorded a bullet drill of :59 1/5 last Monday and before that produced a few other drills that were much faster than average, so with leading rider Juan Hernandez taking the call we’ll assume that she’s live and well-meant. Additionally, based on pedigree, she should like the grass, as her half-brother Camp Hope was a turf stakes winner at Keeneland as a 2-year-old.

    *

    RACE 6: Post: 3:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Tahoe Secrets
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: none.

Forecast: Tahoe Secrets looks pretty solid in this $16,000 restricted (nw-2) claiming sprint due to having speed figures that are good enough to win and a six race resume that makes him far less exposed than most of the others. This is his softest (and cheapest) spot to date but it’s where he belongs, plain and simple. At or near his morning line of 3-1, the Tim Yakteen-trained gelding represents a reasonable gamble, but we suspect he’ll go lower.

    *

    RACE 7: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-X J Rascal; 7-Del Mar Jerry.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 8-Baj.

Forecast: X J Rascal blew a four length lead in mid-stretch when worn down close home in a middle distance affair at Del Mar at this level last month but today he shortens in trip while trying the Hillside Course. The Kristin Mulhall-trained gelding was primarily a sprinter in decent handicap races overseas, so these conditions should fit him perfectly. We’re expecting he’ll receive the patient ride he requires form Mike Smith, who got to know him last time out. Del Mar Jerry makes his first start as a gelding and retains Juan Hernandez after earning a career top speed figure in an abbreviated turf sprint at Del Mar in mid-August in a race in which he finished fifth while finding five furlongs too sharp. At 6-1 on the morning line, you have to use him.

    *

    RACE 8: Post: 4:30 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Desmond Doss; 7-Mor Tequila.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 5-Lovesick Blues.

Forecast: Desmond Doss returns to his favorite track (never off the board in six starts, with three wins), so we’re expecting the Steve Miyadi-trained gelding to snap back to top form in this second level allowance sprint. This extended sprint distance is perfect for his mid-pack, closing style, and based on speed figures he’s more than good enough to produce a winning late kick against this group. Mor Tequila may very well be the best of the speed but he’s drawn comfortably outside, so the option is there to stalk, and then pounce should the race flow dictate that kind of trip.

    *

    RACE 9: Post: 5:00 PT Grade: B
Main ticket (in order of preference): 7-Hamwood Flier; 1-Eddie’s New Dream.
    Backups/Savers/Underneath: 3-Lucky Girl; 8-Unbridled Mary.

Forecast: Hamwood Flier is a perfect two-for-two over this course and distance and in fact won this race – the Swingtime Stakes – last year. Furthermore, she’s won off a similar layoff in the past, so we’re expecting her to fire a winning shot fresh in her first start since last December for trainer Phil D’Amato, who has superior stats with the layoff angle. Eddie’s New Dream is in peak form and always gives her best. She’s a four time winner over the Santa Anita lawn and is fresh from a clever score in the Solana Beach Stakes at Del Mar. She projects to be first over if our top pick comes up short in the closing stages.

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

      October 9, 2023 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card, and the 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool rolls in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections are based on a fast track.

      Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

1-Shuffle Up Hanover (2-1)-Has hit the board in 6 of 7 here with 3 pictures. Dropped to this level in last and worked to get on the point, almost lasted but finished 2nd by a neck at even money. Shouldn’t have much of an issue taking control off the gate. Looks like a good spot to cash the top check with a smooth trip.

      Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

2-American Dealer N (9/5)-Finished a close 2nd in the last 2 starts, which were at this level, and the winners are not in this race. Logical choice will be a tiny price but could be posing.
6-Lou's Sweetrevenge (6-1)-Beat this kind on 9-25 and drops to face the same type tonight. Gets a new set of hands in Brennan, will look for a more aggressive drive and should be a nice price.

      Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Luckbewithalex (2-1)-Gets some class relief but does face older. This looks like a good level for success, beat the NW30KL5 in August by getting on the engine and not looking back. This could be a time to try the same plan.
6-Jahan Hanover (6-1)-Beaten 2/5 chalk drops after fading to come 3rd. Bartlett could get the top using less gas here or could land in the pocket behind the ML choice. Either way the Engblom trainee looks like a main threat.

      Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

2-One Crazy Guy (4-1)-Shipped in from Stga and was handled conservatively in the 1st start for the DeVita barn. The 3-year-old comes back in sequence, Bartlett gets the call, drops in for a tag and will be looking for a big try.
5-Whammer Jammer (9/2)-Appears to have enough gate speed to get the top. This is a tough race to read and could be a player if makes the turn.
8-Barrywhite Hanover (20-1)-Team Stratton entry was claimed for $15K and this will be the 3rd time in for $30K. Comes off 2 even efforts, and maybe the connections really like him. This is a hodge podge field, the pedal could be down when the wings fold. Thinking 20-1 isn't in the cards but should be a nice price.

      $1.00 Late Pick 4

      1/2,6/3,6/2,5,8
      Total Bet=$12

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#3 Change the Hour Hoping he offers the most mildly playable kind of price if the guy to his inside draws cash, and I think his last might end up being productive -- trace that winner back and there's another super tough maiden race to steps back.
#2 Zamboni Warrior I like that he was in the right kind of spot at first asking, but he couldn't find a final gear to be competitive late. Would expect better today, but I would monitor the price split between this guy and the top choice.
#6 Reckless Jones Going to take that last one at face value for now while coming out of the same race as the top choice, and he might have a claim on an underneath spot in here at a decent price.
Race Summary Change the Hour comes out of a race I liked, and it traces back to another really sharp race before that. Hoping Zamboni Warrior takes all the cash here as the one to beat.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#3 Anippe Think she's going to be tough if she can flash her typical pace, as she's not meeting a ton of other early burn in here, and I'm hoping she'll be well-rated early and let out as needed. Single.
#2 Folk Hero She was no threat with similar two starts back, but she's not far removed from some tries that would keep her in the frame while stepping back up off the claim.
#6 Merino Wool Taking a stand against her in this spot as she drops in again, and she was a popular and easy winner at this level a couple starts back. That race kind of fell apart after scratches, for whatever it's worth, but I am pretty sure it will lead to her being overbet again.
Race Summary Anippe should be able to control the tempo in here, and she might be able to turn these away one at a time if the race flow plays out leisurely enough. Merino Wool has a big claim on this, but I think she's going to be an underlay.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#8 Dad's Lil Spark That last one was flattered a bit when the runner-up was back with decisive score and now rises into this same spot -- #2 Dudewiththediamond. Think a good tactical trip might be waiting here.
#3 Grael She drilled 10 others at 3/5 at Colonial in the only claiming try on her page, so this 2022 stakes-placed runner has a right to land this, and maybe easily. Still, the overall form is kind of all over the place.
#7 Dream Astray Not too thrilled with the declining form, but he has seen better company so far this year than he's going to find here, and I'd probably want him covered on at least stretch tickets.
Race Summary Dad's Lil Spark might get away at a somewhat playable price in here, as a lot of cash could end going Grael's way. Not totally sure what to do with him in this one, but he wouldn't surprise while dropping to half the September claim price

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Thistledown - Race #3
#3 ARTEMUS EAGLE (7-2) Ran 1-2 in last pair at Belterra, has plenty of back class to summon.
#4 LEXATOGA (5-1) Class relief, fresh start should serve him well at track where he’s 3-for-11.
#6 OWN THE TOWN (4-1) Beaten favorite in last three starts at this distance but earned minor awards.
Race Summary ARTEMUS EAGLE has solid numbers, a proven record at the distance and wore down the favorite to win two starts back. He changes riders while looking to enhance an 8-38 main-track mark. Bet to win and place.
          Thistledown - Race #6
#3 FLASH OF CHEROKEE (2-1) In good form, gets class relief, make her today’s Best Bet.
#2 JUMP INTO SANITY (5-1) Finished 1-2-3 recently at this level, surging late twice.
#4 MY D’VALENTINE (5-2) Pressed pace, finished 1-3/4 lengths behind top one at 6F.
Race Summary FLASH OF CHEROKEE made a 6-wide middle move but flattened out in the stretch off a 6-week layoff. She runs for the cheapest claiming price of her career for a barn in the midst of a 10-28 run with class droppers. Bet to win and place.
          Thistledown - Race #7
#2 FABULOUS CLOWN (5-1) Improving 3-year-old should sit good trip in bid for fourth win this year.
#4 BOOGIE BOOGEE (5-2) Good speed, three wins and three seconds in last six starts on fast track.
#3 EXPRESS FASHION (2-1) Aided by pace duel, surged late in 5-path to win, can repeat.
Race Summary FABULOUS CLOWN won three of her last five sprints with ascending speed figures. She gets in light-weighted and should get an ideal pace to rally into. The price is right to play 2-3 and 2-4 exactas.

                Race 1 - Maiden - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $12000 Class Rating: 61

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR ONTARIO BRED MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 THE ZING DYNASTY 8/5
                # 1 SUGAR BOY PERRY 3/1
                # 4 YOU ARE THE REASON 2/1
THE ZING DYNASTY figures to be the bet in here. Exhibits the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 59 speed figure which is one of the best in this group of horses. Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of quite good win percentage - 21 percent - at this distance & surface. Some decent figures have been posted by this trainer's runners racing at this distance and surface. SUGAR BOY PERRY - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Broadstock have shown strong results recently. Win percentage with this jockey and handler combo - 24 percent - strong. YOU ARE THE REASON - Botello will most likely be able to get this filly to break out early for this race. Is tough not to examine given the company run in recently.

                  Race 7 - Maiden - 300y on the Dirt. Purse: $16500 Class Rating: 77

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. HORSES THAT HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $7,500 OR LESS IN THEIR LAST THREE STARTS ARE LEAST PREFERRED.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 2 PREYIN AND DASHIN 5/2
                  # 1 JESS GENESIS ONE 12/1
                  # 4 RJ GOOD WOMAN BLUES 5/1
I think PREYIN AND DASHIN is a competitive choice. She ought to be given consideration given the solid speed figs. With a nice class fig average of 78, has one of the top class advantages in this group. The speed figure of 70 from her latest race looks very good in here. JESS GENESIS ONE - Ought to go to the front end and could never look back.

                    Parx Racing - Race #2 - Post: 1:07pm - SO - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 68

                    Rating:

                    #2 ONTHISHARVESTMOON (ML=4/1)
                    #1 ELL GRAY (ML=6/1)

ONTHISHARVESTMOON - Have to give this mare a good shot. Ran a sharp race last out within the last 30 days. ELL GRAY - This jockey and conditioner's horses have been producing a beneficial ROI. Entered a non-classified race race at Parx Racing in the last race and raced on a track listed as good finishing fifth. Should do better in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 BLACK DIAMOND RAIN (ML=5/2), #3 LA REGALADA (ML=9/2), #7 STEPHANIE MY LOVE (ML=5/1),

BLACK DIAMOND RAIN - Speed figures tell a story of declining condition. LA REGALADA - This horse doesn't have a champion's attitude. Time-and-again finishes close, but no cigar. STEPHANIE MY LOVE - This filly is always in the mix, but just doesn't get the job done. Tough to wager on her on the win end. This less than sharp equine ran a most unsatisfactory speed fig in the last race. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely get beat in today's event running that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #2 ONTHISHARVESTMOON to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/2 or better though

                      Santa Anita - Race #2 - Post: 1:30pm - Optional Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $63,000 Class Rating: 95

                      Rating:

                      #1 BLUE WILDCAT (ML=4/1)
                      #3 LIBERAL LADY (ML=5/2)

BLUE WILDCAT - Finished off the board last out at Golden Gate Fields, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 4/1 makes me think she's got a chance. Great chance for this pony. Solid late speed and should have good position. Steiner adds Lasix for the 2nd time today. Should make the difference right here. LIBERAL LADY - I like the fact that this filly's last speed figure, 95, is tops in this field. Look at this pattern of improvement. 79/91/95 are the last three Equibase speed figures.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 COFFEE IN BED (ML=8/5), #4 CLIQUISH (ML=5/2),

COFFEE IN BED - Hard to support any horse with declining speed ratings of 91/85/82. CLIQUISH - Don't figure that this racer has what it takes to be victorious this time.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 BLUE WILDCAT to win if we can get at least 3/2 odds

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1 - Post: 3:00pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,000 Class Rating: 66

                          Rating:

                          #3 CHANGE THE HOUR (ML=2/1)

CHANGE THE HOUR - Finished 2nd, but easily runner-up over the third horse. Those types usually run well next time out. This horse has the pace, and no one may be able to keep up with him. Gelding flopped as the favorite in a Maiden Special race last time out. Was a good effort even though he finished second. You have to really like that latest race speed rating, 66, which is the highest recent race speed figure of this bunch. I am keen on that last outing on September 19th at Presque Isle Downs where he ran second.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ZAMBONI WARRIOR (ML=7/5), #4 JUANSEN (ML=9/2), #5 MAC'S CAT (ML=6/1),

ZAMBONI WARRIOR - In any event of 6 furlongs, I like to back a contender that has been sharp in short distance events recently. Hasn't been on the Presque Isle Downs oval in the last few weeks. Cause for some concern. JUANSEN - This horse hasn't shown much effort in the last couple races. MAC'S CAT - This vulnerable equine showed very liitle last time out finishing sixth. Don't see any chance of a reversal of fortune in today's event. Garnered a most unsatisfactory speed rating last out in a Maiden Special race on Sep 19th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that fig.

With one of the most respectable riders in terms of gains at the window, don't count this gelding out. Is a contender - given the 69 Equibase speed fig from his most recent race. BELIEVEINROCKNROLL - With a strong 66 speed figure last time out, will clearly be a factor in this competition. PERFECT GENTLEMAN - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this horse look respectable in this contest.
