Hard not to favor NORTHERN SKYWAY as the top contender for this one. Feel the need for speed, this interesting entrant has been turning in some excellent speed figures averaging around 80. Comes into this race with respectable TrackMaster class ratings in relationship to the bunch - could be worth a shot. That 75 speed figure clocked in the most recent contest puts this harness racer in the mix today. MISTER MUSCLE - Many smart handicappers will recognize the outstanding speed rating in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this grouping. Very high winning percentage makes this solid standardbred an excellent play to take home the dough. INQUIRING MIND - Have to make Cushing the wager here if only for the last thirty days win percentage. Big probability for the win. This entrant looks tough considering the high class figures. Don't toss out of any exotics.

DYLAN THE GREAT will not be denied the trip to the winner's circle in this contest. He's competing in good form, recording very promising TrackMaster speed figs. An excellent play. The 84 avg class rating may give this gelding a distinct advantage in the field. Post 5 has been winning at an above average stat, suggesting formidable probability of success in this one. MANDEVILLE - That 78 speed rating clocked in the most recent gathering puts this race horse in the mix today. This interesting entrant and Plano have some sort of connection going. In the money percentage for this tandem is high. TEACHMEHOWTOTORY - Cannot put a finger on it, but support this mare for a wager.

If you want a great play here, feast your eyes on JK ELLEM ENOH. The consortium noted a very strong contest out of this horse last time. Hoping for a duplicate of that to take the whole enchilada. The driver/horse combination figures point out that this duet are solid in the money finishers when working their magic together. Most likely think these two have a good thing going. Vaillancourt sending the horse out means a respectable chance to get the score. ROCKNROLL NATION - Has good TrackMaster Speed Ratings and unquestionably has to be considered for a bet this time. The handicapping team noted a very promising contest out of this fine animal last time. Looking for a repeat of that to dominate. BIG PETES STYLE - With very good win stats, Gagnon should have this gelding in excellent position to win the affair. The handicapping team noted a strong affair out of this nice horse last time. Hoping for a repeat effort of that to score.

                FAIR VALUE PLAYS
(Fair Value: These are the odds at which I could reasonably bet each of the horses listed. Wagering decisions should be based on the actual odds. The best value option will not necessarily be the top pick.)

                RACE 3

Lookin At Roses (#2) figures to be heavily supported in this spot as he bids for his sixth victory of the season. He’s been very consistent, especially from a speed figure perspective. However, he’s primarily done his best running out of town at Parx and Delaware. He did take his show on the road to earn a victory over this course and distance in September, but he was beating a weaker field that day. I think this is a tougher test for him and didn’t want to settle for a short price. If Portos (#3) is able to repeat his last race, he’s going to be a handful for this field. He didn’t finish that far behind the improving 3-year-old Signator or classy older rivals like Costa Terr and Little Demon. He obviously relishes this distance, and appears to be rounding back into form for Wayne Potts. Sundaeswithsandy (#4) is coming off a couple of disappointing results, but he didn’t get the right trip last time. He is a horse who sometimes breaks a step slowly, and Luis Rivera was unable to get him forward after that. The horse raced keenly in traffic early, but never gave up despite having to adapt to a new running style. I think he can get this distance if he’s able to make the lead, but that’s no guarantee here. My top pick is Higher Quality (#1). This horse has been a bit of an overachiever for the connections. Claimed for just $10k, he won a starter allowance race at Pimlico in September, and nearly took down to a $25k claimer with a very game effort two back. He looks a little cheaper than these on the basis of those efforts, but I thought he put in a strong effort when moved up in class last time. That race was dominated by a pair of tougher rivals, but he was closing stoutly though the late stages to get up for third despite going a distance that is short for him. I like him stretching back out to 1 1/8 miles, and he’s usually a fair price.

                Fair Value:
#1 HIGHER QUALITY, at 6-1 or greater

                RACE 4

I have some doubts about the favorite Heir Port (#4) as he returns from a layoff for Rudy Rodriguez. He was involved in a competitive pace last time at Saratoga in what was a tougher spot at this level. That 111 TimeformUS Speed Figure makes him very much the horse to beat here, but he’s been off since his claim was voided that day. He is coming back with the claiming tag waived, but now he has other speed to deal with both inside and outside of him. I’m not thrilled with others who could take money, such as Prince James (#2), who has been a disappointment lately, or Aequor (#3), who is coming off an inexplicable poor effort. Therefore I want to give a look to a couple of horses drawn towards the outside. Chuck Willis (#6) is logical off his last race. I know he looks like more of a turf and synthetic runner, but we did see a son of Kodiac win on the dirt yesterday, and these horses with superior form sometimes handle dirt when dropped in class. In that Nov. 3 affair, he was chasing a pretty fast pace, dueling with Printrack, who has really improved in recent months. Despite that taxing scenario, Chuck Willis actually battled on gamely for third. Now he’s dropping into a much softer spot, and he’s drawn well outside of his other pace rivals. I also think Rally Squirrel (#5) is intriguing as perhaps the biggest price in the field. I know he was facing weaker last time, but it was a step in the right direction for a horse who had run competitive speed figures on dirt previously. He got a very tentative ride from Eric Cancel that day, never asked for much through the stretch and basically getting geared down in the final eighth of a mile despite finding himself in a contending position. This horse probably has some issues, but there’s more talent here than it might appear at first glance.

                Fair Value:
#6 CHUCK WILLIS, at 3-1 or greater
#5 RALLY SQUIRREL, at 12-1 or greater

                RACE 6

If you have confidence that Kitten’s Appeal (#4) will return to her dirt sprint form from earlier this season prior to the layoff, she is very much the horse to beat in this spot. She barely lost to Hot Fudge back in January, and that filly went on to do some nice things in the first half of this season. She was then chasing an honest pace in February in a race won by a deep closer. I won’t hold the turf effort against her where she also got off to a poor start. Bruce Levine is 5 for 24 (21%, $1.25 ROI) off 150 to 300 day layoffs on dirt over 5 years, primarily doing well with short prices. I respect her form, but I didn’t want to take a short price considering the time away. Virtual Reality (#1) could take money as she returns to dirt for Chad Brown. Yet I’m just not convinced that she’s quite good enough to compete at this level. She didn’t beat the strongest field when she broke her maiden in her only dirt sprint attempt earlier this year, and she took a while to get going that day. She subsequently settled for second in a couple of weak races at this level up at Saratoga perform improving a bit on turf last time. She doesn’t strike me as a horse who would appreciate going shorter on dirt, and I’m also concerned she’s going to get outrun in the early stages. A new face to consider is Desert Dalliance (#6), who makes her first start off a trainer switch to Rudy Rodriguez. The barn doesn’t have the best stats with this move, but she has run some competitive speed figures on occasion. She won going 9 furlongs over this surface last sprint, but showed herself to be proficient sprinting this distance two back at Parx. Her inconsistency is a concern, but she’s capable on her best day. My top pick is Mongolian Panther (#5). She is obviously coming off a disappointing effort, where she finished behind two of today’s rivals on Nov. 5. Yet she didn’t get the best trip that day, as she was keen while racing in tight quarters along the rail early. Isaac Castillo, in trying to get her to settled, wrangled her back off the pace just as the leaders started to sprint for home. She was trying to accelerate late, but the pace had been slow, and the leaders had too much left in the tank. Her form prior to that clearly makes her the horse to beat in this spot. She ran well chasing the fast pace set by Portage two back going a distance that is probably too far for her anyway. A repeat of her 108 TimeformUS Speed Figure going this distance at Saratoga in August would clearly put her in the winner’s circle against this group.

                Fair Value:
#5 MONGOLIAN PANTHER, at 2-1 or greater

                RACE 8

It's hard to knock the recent form of likely favorite Swiftsure (#7). He was commanding winner against claimers at Saratoga, and that gave his connections confidence to step him up to a mile. It now seems clear that he should have been focusing on longer distances all along. He won that first route attempt in early October, and subsequently showed that improvement was no fluke by finishing a competitive fifth against a tough field in the G2 Forty Niner. On all of those occasions, he made use of his early speed, and he figures to get things his own way up front again here without any other confirmed frontrunners signed on. I’m not against him, but he figures to be a short price now that his form is exposed. Among his main rivals is Unbridled Bomber (#5), who will turn back to a mile for the first time since early in the season. Both of his efforts going this distance were strong, as he won an allowance race by 9 lengths with a career-best speed figure in April before finishing a decent fourth in the Westchester. My concern is that he had to work harder than expected for that victory last time despite getting a good trip sitting on top of a slow pace. I’m a fan of this horse, but I thought others might offer better value here. I am pretty intrigued by the horse who nearly defeated Unbridled Bomber last time. Daydreaming Boy (#8) nearly pulled off that minor upset when sweeping to the lead past the quarter pole. He appeared to have the race in the bag, but got a bit leg-weary in the last sixteenth. Despite the loss, that race was just further confirmation that this horse is in great form right now. He really improved with the stretch-out in distance at Parx this summer, and has carried that form into the fall. I really like this slight turnback for him, since he clearly has the turn of foot to win going a mile. He looks like a horse who is pace dependent, but he has been more forward on occasions, and Trevor McCarthy should have some options from this outside draw.

                Fair Value:
#8 DAYDREAMING BOY, at 6-1 or greater

                RACE 9

Goddess of Fire (#7) will obviously win this race if she gets back to her better efforts off the layoff. She’s multiple graded stakes placed, even earning a Grade 1 placing behind stablemate Nest in the Alabama last year. However, her season did end on a sour note in the Cotillion, and we didn’t see her for over a year after that. She’s missed nearly her entire 4-year-old season, and now returns getting significant class relief in this N1X allowance affair. She’s talented on her best day, but she’s a little hard to trust coming off the layoff. Todd Pletcher is just 13 for 68 (19%, $0.93 ROI) off 300 to 600 day layoffs on dirt over 5 years, and 4 for 28 (14%, $0.54 ROI) in dirt routes within that sample. Her main rival appears to be Coppa Girl (#4), who also comes off a poor effort. Yet she doesn’t have as long a layoff to deal with, having last raced at Saratoga this summer. She ran very well on this circuit two back when just missing behind Into Happiness. Her best effort won’t beat Goddess of Fire’s top races, but she has fewer questions to answer as she attempts to bounce back for a dangerous barn. I’m more interested in a horse with more early speed. Dame Cinco (#1) looks overmatched from a class standpoint as she moves up second off the claim for Rick Dutrow. This was one of the first horses Dutrow claimed upon his return to training in April, and it took him a long time to get her back to the races. Her last race was probably just a prep, since she was only going 6 furlongs with the claiming tag waived. She should have gotten something out of that effort, and now she moves up into a more ambitious spot despite losing that return. I like her betting back out to a mile, where she has run some of the best races of her career. Manny Franco figures to make use of her speed from this inside post position, and I think she’s a serious threat to take them all the way.

                Fair Value:
#1 DAME CINCO, at 5-1 or greater

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2023 BEST BET: RACE 9, NATION

                    First race
Bred to win early, KOPION debuts with a series of works that suggest
she can fire first out. Sired by Omaha Beach, whose debut juvenile
progeny have won at a 26-percent rate, KOPION was produced by a
mare whose eight runners include six debut winners including stakes
winners Ami’s Flatter, Amis Gizmo and Aragorn Ami. All systems go
for trainer Richard Mandella and Flavien Prat, who teamed to win with
                    4 of their last 8 dirt first-time starters. SHE’S A TEMPEST finished a
creditable second in her debut, a race won by the odds-on favorite.
‘TEMPEST should be forwardly placed with a license to improve second
out. CRITICISM ran better in her debut than her modest 56 Beyer. She
was five- and four-wide throughout and finished nearly three lengths
clear of third. She moves up slightly in class from restricted maiden to
maiden special-weight, and is the only starter who has raced at this six
                    and one-half furlong distance.

                    second race
Consistent multi-surface sprinter DISKO TRIBUTE can win this $32k
claiming sprint based on sharp form in Northern California. He finished
second last out behind a 4-for-6 pro who routinely earns 90-plus
figures. ‘TRIBUTE won his only start over the Del Mar surface last year,
and can give high-percent No Cal trainer Reid France the first DMR win
of his career. ESTABLISHED tailed off his last two starts, but a return
to DMR could turn him around. He ran well both starts on this track
in summer, and figures for an up-front trip. LAMBEAU returns from
a layoff with a series of sharp works. Although he has run better in
routes than sprints, this is the first time he has raced for a claim tag.
SANTOS TO WILSON, 2-for-4 over the DMR track, moves up a notch
off a runner-up finish from which he was claimed for $25k by Vann
Belvoir, who is 5-for-13 first-off-the-claim with So Cal dirt sprinters the
past five years according to Formulator.

                    third race
ANGELCENTS and PHENOM face a possibly challenging pace scenario in
this $25k claiming turf sprint. Both are front-runners; they could compromise each other. Nonetheless, the call is ANGELCENTS, who might be
quicker. An eight-time winner from 18 starts, the speedster returns to the
claiming ranks and is reunited with Kyle Frey, who rode her to a pair of gateto-wire wins this spring. PHENOM also has speed, dropping from $50k
claiming, and drawn outside where she might have the option of pressing/
stalking rather than going head and head with ANGELCENTS. If the top
pair run each other into the ground, the race could fall apart in favor of
longshot late-runner A NEW PEACE. She was claimed from a $12.5k claiming dirt win last out, she has won on turf, and should be running late from
a midpack position. She should start at a hint of a price. NU PI LAMBDA,
1-for-27, also will be running in the lane.

                    Fourth race
Five-start maiden CALIFORNIA TIGER and second-time starter JOHN
DUNBAR top this Cal-bred maiden-50. ‘TIGER ran the best race of his career
last out, runner-up with an above-par speed figure while finishing more
than five lengths clear of third. He is likely to get first run over his main
rival. However, the runner-up debut by JOHN DUNBAR also was very good.
He was sent hard from the inside post to chase the pace from fourth, was
in a tight spot turning for home, split horses late, rallied between runners
and missed by only a half-length. Excellent debut. Now he moves to the
outside post, with a race under his belt, and an additional half-furlong in
this six-furlong sprint. Close call between the top pair. CAROL’S COMIC
is an 18-start maiden with 10 in-the-money finishes. He will be chugging
along late. EL REY DORADO drops from Cal-bred MSW to Cal-bred maiden
-50 for his first start in nearly three months. Upsetter?

                    FiFth race
This deep N1X sprint could go a number of ways. Gradually improving 3yo
MISTER ICEMAN gets the call based on his better-than-looked fifth last
out at Santa Anita. He was shuffled and lost position on the turn, blocked
most of the stretch, and missed by only a length and a half without a fair
chance. He ran well both turf sprints at DMR in summer (runner-up, sixth
with trouble). KING APOLLO has been stuck at this N1X level most of the
year without a win, but he almost always shows up. His last seven tries at
the level produced four seconds and a third. ‘APOLLO is a late-runner; there
is enough pace to flatter his closing style. He is trained by Kristin Mulhall,
who also entered front-runner SAWASDEE. The latter wired Cal-bred allowance rivals on this course in summer,
he will contest the pace. SILARDI also has speed while habitual slow starter PRINCE LANCELOT was gelded
since his most recent start. He will rally late. This field is deep

                    sixth race
DEVIL MOON drops in class, returns to dirt, and is drawn outside main rival
K P KWEST in this N3L claiming sprint. Six and one-half furlongs might be a
reach for ‘MOON, but he could get a good trip pressing his main rival from the
outside. Of course, K P KWEST could be long gone. He ran super finishing
second at this level last out. He was hounded through fast splits, shook off two
pace rivals who finished nowhere, then got collared by a closer while finishing
more than three lengths clear of third. Excellent try by the gelding, who could
be long gone running back at the same class level. The same question applies
to ‘KWEST as the top choice: can he stay six and a half? ELEVADO return to a
sprint and will be running from off the pace. He likes the DMR track

                    seventh race
IDESSIA is on a roll, seeking her third straight in this N1X turf mile following
maiden and Cal-bred allowance wins. Her last was her best yet. She ran faster
each successive quarter-mile, finished in :23.14 and won going away. Sharp gray
filly can handle open company. LAKOTA SPIRIT also enters in peak form, runnerup by a
head last out in an off-turf allowance, and runner-up two back behind
subsequent (two starts later) G3 winner Linda’s Gift. JENSCO is probably the
one to catch. First-time long, speed to make the lead, she could clear and get
brave. TIERGARTEN won three of her last five starts while moving up the ladder.
KLEEN KARMA is a three-time winner over the DMR turf, including a N1X win two
summers ago. She entered for the optional $40k claim tag.

                    eighth race
NEWGRANGE, multiple graded winner, can win this G3 dirt route if he improves
from his promising comeback. He dueled through a blazing pace, hung tough
into the lane and tired while making his first start in seven months. The fractions should be slower in this nine-furlong race, NEWGRANGE figures for a good
trip setting or pressing the pace outside the front-runner in post 2. SKINNER
drops from a pair of G1 races and is the best late threat. However, this stakes
race is usually won by horses with speed. Eight of the nine Native Diver winners
either wired the field, or pressed from second position. Conversely, SKINNER is
a deep closer. Second choice, nonetheless. MR FISK is an improving 3yo who
ran the best race of his career on this track in summer when he dead-heated in
a stakes for 3yos. ARROWTHEGREAT is the aforementioned allowance-caliber
front-runner in post 2. A gate-to-wire winner both routes (MSW and N1X), he will
attempt an ambitious class hike while in sharp form.

                    ninth race
Second-time starter NATION can win this maiden turf route based on his
promising runner-up debut at Keeneland in which he had plenty of self-caused
trouble. He was rank and green early, lost ground throughout, rallied five-wide
into the lane, and ran his final quarter-mile in a strong :22.47. With only minor
improvement second out, NATION should be tough. SEA OF CORTEZ stretches
out from a promising U.S. debut in which he missed by a neck at six furlongs.
He broke slow both starts, but has enough speed to establish a forward position
regardless. KHANTARO D’ORO is an eight-start maiden, but likely to improve
second start back after a decent pace-pressing sixth-place comeback.

                      BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

                      Del Mar - Race #5
                      PICKS NOTES
#8 Inch He's certainly a bit of a question on class, but he ran well over this course twice this summer and has the kind of style that might leave him in a really dreamy spot today while not being totally outrun early.
#10 Silardi He draws well to flash pace and prompt the other forward players drawn further inside, and he still has a high enough ceiling to handle this kind of group with his better stuff.
#5 King Apollo He caught a sharp winner in that last one and has some pretty honest finishing form on his page, but he does settle for a lot of underneath slices and might do so again today.
Race Summary Inch is a reliable closer, but he occasionally finds himself in more of a midpack spot, and that might benefit him today if he can settle in and close.

                      Del Mar - Race #8
                      PICKS NOTES
#2 Arrowthegreat He's in for a class test today while rising off the graduation run and first-level allowance tally, but I like the way he's heading while stepping up. Forward threat.
#7 Mr Fisk Wouldn't be a shock to see him land this, and he's got a couple excuses on class and/or trip for a couple of the clunkers on his page. Capable.
#6 Skinner He has typically been a too-little-too-late nibbling finisher, but he's coming out of much tougher spots and might be able to get past these late on recent class.
Race Summary #5 Newgrange has a claim on this too, but I think Arrowthegreat is the more appealing option right near the top.

                      Del Mar - Race #9
                      PICKS NOTES
#2 Khantaro d'Oro He couldn't hang in the final yards of the comeback race, but he's probably better off with that race under his belt after 21 months away, and it has been a couple years since he was able to put multiple races together. Expecting better.
#7 Nation Think he's one of the ones in here after a wide trip last out, but he finished up nicely in that first start and probably has some upside today. Similar effort keeps him there either way.
#8 Caribbean King Positional pace makes some sense in here with a few decent winners in the recent company lines, and he figures to be in another good spot into the far turn. Lacking the final gear again?
Race Summary Khantaro d'Oro ran a pretty good race last time around and was still trying to reach out nicely late -- he just got tired. Take that at face value and build in some upside after the first start in close to two years....and he ends up looking about as good as any in here.

COMMENTS: NORTHERN INVADER won two of three on grass including the top last race speed figure and a bullet workout since. SANTORINIs resume says he should be as good or a lot better in the second start off the sidelines. LINCOLN HIGHWAY is a consistent performer with a high floor and low ceiling that will be closing. RUNAWAY STORM will try to get out front and go gate to wire.

COMMENTS: MR FISK has a big win and a close second in a pair on Del Mar dirt. NEWGRANGE is the most accomplished horse in the field with high level early pace and occasional stakes level late pace. ARROWTHEGREAT won two in a row and upped the tempo in his last. SKINNER ran the highest last race speed figure but struggles to find the winners circle.
