RACE 2

There’s no disputing that Thinkaboutit (#5) is a deserving favorite as he gets his claiming price slashed in half on the drop in class. Yet he’s going to be a strong favorite given this sharp class relief, and he still has to show up and seal the deal in a race that doesn’t feature an overwhelming amount of pace. The TimeformUS Pace Projector actually depicts him in last place early in a situation favoring frontrunners. That should make the likely leader Poppy’s Pride (#3) particularly tough to catch. This gelding ran well off the claim for John Toscano two back, securing the early lead in the slop and leading throughout. The track was somewhat speed-favoring that day, but he still earned a strong 106 TimeformUS Speed Figure in victory, which is higher than the recent numbers of Thinkaboutit. Poppy’s Pride obviously disappointed last time when moved up to the $32k level. Yet he was hard-ridden through the early stages to get clear through a wicked opening quarter. That TimeformUS Pace Figure for that first split was 149, which was totally unsustainable for the level, especially since the day is color-coded blue in TimeformUS, indicating a closers bias. I think he can bounce back here on the slight drop.

Fair Value:
#3 POPPY'S PRIDE, at 5-2 or greater


RACE 6

I’m just not thrilled with any of the short prices in this state-bred maiden affair. I made Eastern Star (#3) the slight morning line favorite given her upside, but she is coming off a perfect trip, where she rode a gold rail. Even with that advantage, she barely defeated Foxy Cara (#1), who had the much tougher trip on Nov. 19. Foxy Cara got squeezed back at the start, and had to launch a wide rally on the turn, racing against the bias before flattening out. She’s better than that recent results indicates, but she’s still tough to trust at a short price given her 0 for 10 career record. Some may look to first time starter Ghostbustin (#9), who does have pedigree as a full-sister to dirt sprint stakes winner Time Limit. However, she was entered for a $40k tag last month and was a vet scratch when entered to debut for Finger Lakes-based trainer Paul Barrow. She obviously hasn’t been in Bruce Levine’s barn very long, and I wonder about her quality if they considered debuting for a tag. Given my reservations, I want to go for an oddball at a price. Steppin’ Hawk (#2) doesn’t fit the profile of your typical maiden winner, as a 6-year-old mare who has already made 16 lifetime starts. However, she has run some of the best dirt races of anyone in this field. She came into form in 2021, and continued to run competitively at this level through early 2022, registering multiple 80+ TimeformUS Speed Figures, which certainly put her in the mix. She obviously tailed off last season, but she’s been in training for this return for several months now, and is reunited with Heman Harkie, who rode her to some of her best results. There are obviously some major question marks here, but she’s going to be a generous price and is capable on her best day.

#2 STEPPIN' HAWK, at 12-1 or greater


RACE 7

It’s hard to know how the public will approach this highly competitive $20k claimer, in which no one is particularly trustworthy. Its Cold in Dehere (#2) comes off a lopsided victory against $10k claimers in her last start, but she’s obviously stepping up into a much tougher spot, and I’m not sure the slight cutback in distance helps her. Vegas Weekend (#7) makes the opposite move, dropping down after facing a slightly tougher group of starter allowance foes last time. Yet she’s another who might find this distance to be a little sharp, and I wanted to explore some other options. Captivating Cara (#5) is a little interesting based on the fact that she’s won each of her last 3 starts against claiming company, including a victory at this level back in June. She tailed off after that, and hasn’t been seen in 5 months, but perhaps she can get back on track in her return for Chris Englehart. Jackie the Joker (#6) is worth including as she makes her first start off the claim for a low-profile barn. She’s moving up in class slightly, but she earned a competitive 93 TimeformUS Speed Figure when she beat cheaper two back. Her last race also isn’t as bad as it looks, since she had some minor trouble early and was never in the most comfortable position. My top pick is Timed Out (#4). This mare just appears to fit the level really well, and she also never had a fair chance in her first start off the claim for Orlando Noda last time. That race was run on a day when speed was dominating, so she was up against it right from the start when she bobbled and was off slowly. She actually tried to make a run after that, and was finishing with interest despite the chart reporting that she bled. She’s been given some time to recover, and now returns to the same level at which she ran well two back. She might have won that Aug. 24 event at Saratoga if she had gotten a smoother journey. She has the tactical speed to be prominent early, but the start is the chief concern, since she’s had issues getting out of the gate in most of her recent races. I do think she’ll be a fair price to take on that risk.

#4 TIMED OUT, at 7-2 or greater


RACE 8

Shadow Dragon (#8) is obviously the horse to beat as he makes his fifth attempt to break through this N2X state-bred condition. He was ambitiously placed early in his career after a surprise runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Holy Bull last winter, and seemed to initially relish the return to New York-bred company this summer. However, since that N1X victory, he’s been stuck at this second-level condition, finishing second in three of his last four starts, all in one-turn mile events. He hasn’t sprinted since his career debut, but I actually like this slight turnback for him. He unleashed a furious rally to win that only sprint start, and he figures to get a fair pace here as he cuts back to 7 furlongs. Among his main rivals is Radio Red (#9), who has also been struggling to achieve his best results at this allowance level in recent starts. After finishing in a photo for second with subsequent stakes winner Straight Arrow at Saratoga, he’s regressed in two subsequent starts. He has twice been defeated by today’s rival Zeebear (#1) recently, and that foe seems more likely to appreciate the slight stretch-out to 7 furlongs. I don’t want to overlook Zeebear at what could be a better price, since he was against a speed bias two back, and finished well last time after a wide trip. Linda Rice has been dangerous all year and did get this gelding to win impressively going a mile at Saratoga. Yet I want to go in a different direction with another horse looking to recapture his best form. Thrill of It (#5) was running races that would make him highly competitive here from March right on through October of this year. However, he regressed sharply last time, fading in a race that was otherwise dominated towards the front end. That was a poor effort, but he had some subtle excuses. He was tentatively ridden early, and made a mild move up the rail to challenge for the lead before backing out and appearing to lose interest. He’s a horse who tends to do best with a more hands-on rider, and Romero Maragh figures to suit him well in that sense. I also like this slight turnback to 7 furlongs. John Terranova is 10 for 41 (24%, $2.62 ROI) going from routes to sprints on dirt over the past 5 years. He won going a bit shorter than this early in the season, and he figures to be sharper with the blinkers going back on.

#5 THRILL OF IT, at 6-1 or greater


RACE 9

I’m not thrilled with most of the experienced types who figure to attract support here. Bustino Santino (#5) might go favored despite putting in a lackluster effort in his last start. He didn’t have nearly as much trouble as the chart comment suggests, as he got into position early and just didn’t have the energy to mount a serious challenge before tiring late. Woodside Warrior (#8) clearly ran a better race that day, since he was off slowly and had to work his way through traffic while making a late run to get up for fourth. Yet the most interesting horse from that race might be Vaunted (#2), who finished far behind both of them, checking in last. He tried to rush up in the inside early, but was taken in hand by the apprentice and then just continually lost position into and around the far turn. He had run far better in his prior dirt starts and could rebound here if given a more aggressive ride. I just didn’t love any of these experienced options and was more intrigued by a first time starter. Some will be intrigued by the outside runner for Rob Falcone. Yet my top pick is First Sons (#3), who debuts for Rudy Rodriguez. This 4-year-old gelding has obviously taken a long time to get to the races, debuting some two and a half years after working in 10-flat at the OBS April 2021 sale. Yet it’s not as if he’s been in training all that time, just registering his first timed workout on October 19 of this year. He’s seemingly come to hand pretty quickly, and he has the pedigree to be a runner. Cupid is a decent sire, and the dam has produced 4 winners, including a couple with some ability. Rudy Rodriguez is underrated with debut runners, and he is specifically 3 for 9 (33%, $3.90 ROI) with 4-year-old and up first time starters over 5 years. The placement in a $30k maiden claimer might seem like a negative, but Rudy is probably being aggressive with a horse who has missed a substantial chunk of time.

BUILDER is starUng to have the chances add
up as he is 0-11 but he gets Irad OrUz Jr. in
the saddle and that’s a big asset.

Race 2: 7 SPECIAL AFFIAR is drawn well In
this sprint as she exits a very strong race but
she will have to step it up figure wise to be a
player. 4 ANAJULIAFOREVER controlled on
the front end in her last out but will have
some company with her there today,
making it difficult to hold over. 1 MIGUEL’S
BELLE tries a tougher crowd this Ume out
and will have to be much closer to the front
if she wants to have a shot here.

Race 3: 5 AQUARIUS MOON gets his regular
jockey making the trip to come ride today
and the stalking tacUcs this guy has should
set up nicely for this one turn mile. 7
MWARI looks like he can run all day long but

out, he can be a big player here with Iran
OrUz Jr. in the saddle. 6 CUORE SACRO
returns to the dirt a@er 3 failed a3empts
sprinUng on the grass, he should be able to
get the distance here.

Race 4: 6 RUNAWAY BREEZE is a double
reclaim for trainer Bobby Dibona and each
Ume he gets this filly back, he stretches her
right back out the to 2 turns and she does
great for him. 8 DANCINGWTHDAFFODLS
was strung out to dry in her last effort, and
she sUll managed to finish 3rd behind 7
KATIESDREAMGIRL.
SELECTIONS: 6-8-7-1

Race 5: 8 NOUVEAU RICHIE doesn’t have to
improve too much to make a dent against
this field and Irad OrUz Jr. aboard should get
the win out of him. 6 DREAM DIAMOND is
back to the MCL level and she fits here with
the drop and cutback in distance. 1 KHOZY
COLBY drops in class and cuts back, they bet
her in almost every single start, I wouldn’t
take too short of a price.
SELECTIONS: 8-6-1-5

Race 6: 3 REZASROLEX won on the lead at
Belterra on the grass last out but being a
son of Bucchero, we know he should love
the tapeta surface he will be trying for the
first Ume here. 7 TENTH MOUNTAIN won
impressively on debut, something that is
not typically this barns forte and should get
the same trip here. 4 SIEGEL (IRE) gets
blinkers on for his first start in the USA,
tapeta is a quesUon.
SELECTIONS: 3-7-4-5

Race 7: 11 SILENT HEART will have a tricky
trip ahead with this wide post but Luis Saez
is very aggressive with his rides from the
gate and this colt looks like he should be
quick enough to clear on the front end. 3
CRASH THE GATE is making his first start as a
newly gelding and that can really turn a
horse around. 2 SOAR RICHARD is making
his first start and although having one
cranked up isn’t usually their thing, Paco
Lopez being aboard should put this colt with
a fighUng chance.
SELECTIONS: 11-3-2-1

Race 8: 5 OPPOSITES ATTRACT hasn’t seen
the tapeta since running in stakes company
at Woodbine earlier in the year and that
was sprinUng, this should be right down his
alley. 3 CLASSIC MO TOWN got on the
tapeta and really changed into a much
be3er horse, he’s back at this same level
and should be able to make some sort of
impact. 7 EMBOITE (IRE) drops down in
class a@er facing much stronger on the grass
as of late, tapeta is a big quesUon.
SELECTIONS: 5-3-7-6

Race 9: 6 BOURBON BREEZE cuts back to
her last winning distance and last winning
rider and this is a much so@er spot than she
was facing in her last 2 Kentucky efforts. 5
FIONA’S MAGIC won like a rocket in her last
start but that was also not the strongest of
fields to get it done. 4 CONTESSA’S SONG
won nicely at Delaware in her last start, she
has some speed but not as quick as the gal
to her outside.

Race 10: 6 CUMBERLAND is geAng the
biggest equipment change of all that is
running first Ume gelding and his best effort
to date was over this GP turf course. 4 HE’S A LUCKY GUY has not been so lucky,
especially his first start at Saratoga, he
should like this grass course, just needs
smoother sailing. 8 CASPIAN SEA (GB) drops
to the MCL level but has yet to show too
much interest in his last two turf tries, the
drop should put him in the money.
