      MLB NEWS AND NOTES
Sunday’s Streaking And Slumping Starting Pitchers
      By Covers Staff

Sunday showcases a number of pitchers taking the mound who’ve been dealing aces lately.

That’s why we’re rolling with three streaking hurlers and just one slumping.

      Streaking

      Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox rotation is in shambles but Boston backers can feel at ease whenever this lefty takes the bump. Lester is 5-0 in his last five decisions and the Sox are 6-1 in his last seven outings.

The Washington state native has struck out 28 batters compared to only nine walks. And Lester is working deep into games (he’s pitched seven or more innings in five of his last six appearances), so you don’t have to worry about the bullpen screwing things up.

Total bettors take notice: the under is 6-2-1 in his last nine starts.

      Jon Garland, San Diego Padres

Baseball bettors are all wondering whether Garland has rediscovered his 2005 form or whether he’s just benefiting from calling pitcher-friendly PETCO Field his new home ballpark.

His home ERA (0.84) is almost a full three runs lower than his number on the road. The righty looked great in his last start, pitching seven scoreless innings against a good-hitting Cardinals club.

      Jeremy Guthrie, Baltimore Orioles

There was a time last season when oddsmakers couldn’t pay bettors to back this guy. But Guthrie is doing a great job of making Baltimore backers forget about 2009.

Guthrie has pitched 20 innings, allowing three earned runs and just four walks, over his last turns in the rotation. Right-handed batters are hitting just .175 with a .207 on-base percentage.

      Slumping

      Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians

There were whispers in spring that Masterson could emerge as Cleveland’s staff ace but things haven’t gone that way for the former Red Sox reliever. Opposing hitters are batting .321 while getting on base at a .406 clip against the Jamaican native.

It’s gotten so bad that the last-place Indians are even considering dropping Masterson from the rotation.

"We'll see," Manny Acta told the Associated Press following a four-inning, five-run outing last week. "It's not just going to be a knee-jerk reaction after a game before we talk it over and talk to the player. Up to now, he's still starting for us."

        HOT LINES

        Sunday's Best MLB Bets

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays (-200, 8)

The Jays’ lineup may not hit for the best average, but it’s going to take some hacks at the plate and mash a few long balls while doing it.

Toronto has already set a team record with 50 home runs in the month of May and will look to continue its onslaught versus the hapless Orioles Sunday. The Jays have already knocked six balls out of the park in the first two games of the three-game set.

"They are an ambush-type team," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said. "They don't take a whole lot, they don't walk a whole lot. They go up there looking to swing. If you make mistakes, they don't foul them straight back, they hit them."

Baltimore will aim to counter the Canadians’ offensive attack with Jeremy Guthrie. Problem is; the Jays hit righties better than any other team in the majors with 225 runs and 74 homers – almost 30 more HRs than the next team.

The Jays have won five straight against the O’s and seven in a row in Toronto.

The runline (+110) should be a safe bet in this game as it has cashed in the first two of this series, but closer Kevin Gregg always provides the possibility of giving up a run or two in the ninth inning of a close game.

        Pick: Toronto Blue Jays

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (-105, OTB)

Total bettors should have Wrigley Field figured out by now because the oddsmakers are doing all the work for them.

When the total at Chicago’s iconic ballpark has been posted at 8.5 or less this season, the over/under record is 3-12. And if the wind is blowing directly in from center field the UNDER is 6-1.

On the other side of the spectrum, when the total at Wrigley is listed at 9.5 or higher (and there’s already been a 13 and 14.5) the over/under record is a perfect 6-0.

With two pitching studs like Adam Wainwright and Ryan Dempster facing each other Sunday, you can be assured this total won’t be more than 8.5 runs so that should lead bettors to the promised land.

        Pick: Under

          Sunday winner ...
My 30 Dime play is on the Arizona Diamondbacks, and make note I am listing both pitchers I will discuss momentarily. As I release this play at 7:30 a.m. eastnrn, the line is +110 pretty much everycwhere here in Vegas and offshore. I don't anticipnte much change in the line, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't shop for the very best line possible.

                              Analysis: 1.5 unit play guys....

First off, this was literally my GOY last year. That's how much I love backing Jamie Moyer as an underdog at LandShark Stadium. He's 8-1 with an ERA of under 2 there in his career. The only issue is that Moyer has lost his last three games overall against Florida, so that alone is telling me to take heed and play this one at a modest size. Regardless, this is a game I literally circle on my calender every single season.

Let me go over some concerns. First, I realize that Moyer has struggled against the Marlins lately, and this year included in his lone start against them. But I'll say this about that game this season.. It was a tough luck loss, and a tough luck 5 ER's that he gave up. The guy strike out 7 Marlins batters, and induced tons and tons of groundballs. Moyer, literally, was just unlucky that those balls found the holes in the infield.

The reason Moyer always has success against Florida is because historically, Florida has always lacked patience at the plate. In order to argue that Florida has turned the corner against Moyer, you'd have to argue that they have gained some patience. Well, groundballs=lack of patience. Any scout will tell you that. So the fact that Moyer's last start against Florida was all groundballs and all strikeouts, tells me that Florida has indeed, not gotten over the hump against Moyer specifically. I do expect Moyer to pitch well today!

On the other side, Anibal has been mediocre, at best, against the Phillies in his career. And I certainly don't mind being on the other side of him.

Here's the deal.. Even if you do not agree with the fact that Moyer is going to continue to own the Marlins, you have to look at it like this. The Phillies play far better defense, run the bases better, have a more complete lineup, and have a better bullpen. Even if Moyer leaves the game tied against Sanchez, there is still a huge edge to the Phillies. At an underdog price, yo~u simply cannot pass this one up
