Re: 6-8-10
Derek Mancini Today's Winner... 30 Dime - Lakers
After an inspiring effort in Game 2, I see rough waters ahead for the Celtics. They did what most teams in the NBA were unable to do against the Lakers all season -hit their 3-pointers. Thru 82 regular season games, the Lakers were ranked # 1 in opponents 3-point percentage (32%), and while that number has risen a bit in the playoffs (33%), they are still the best 3-point defense in the NBA.
That being said, we will not see another 11 for 16 barrage of 3-point shots (68%) tonight - and without those long range bombs, the Celtics are in trouble in this match up. Celtics-backers will tout their own excellent perimeter defense, but that doesn't matter to the Lakers, because LA doesn't win games from the outside in, they win games from the inside out.
The Celtics excellent 3-point shooting in Game 2 also opened up the floor for Rajon Rondo. When Boston is hitting their 3-pointers, defenders are forced to over play the 3-point line, opening up the lane for his penetration. However, take away those shots, and all of a sudden we see the Rondo we saw in Game 1, who's still a great player, but not the force (triple-double) we saw in Game 2.
You also have to expect we'll see more from the Black Mamba. It wasn't so much that Kobe got shut down by Ray Allen as everyone seems to think. It was more that the zebras threw off Bryant's game. He's not used to playing in foul trouble (aka playing tentatively), and it clearly bothered him, as he spent more and more time bickering with the referees as the game went on. Bad games from Artest and Odom also doomed the Lakers in Game 2, both players should be better (they can't be any worse than they did Sunday) in Game 3.
Combine all these factors, and I'm seeing trouble for Boston tonight. Gasol and Bynum continue to play well, and with some tweaks on the defensive end, this is LA's game to lose. Lakers plus the points in Game 3.
