Lenn Robbins, NY Post, even though he's free he picks versus spread all season long
Virginia Tech (-4) over BOSTON COLLEGE: Hokies, off to a 1-2 start, are 16-1 in true road openers, and their defense will make 25-year-old Dave Shinskie, who is 26th in passing efficiency, feel his age. BC has had an extra week to gets its dormant run game going.
Temple (+13½) over PENN STATE: Before the start of the season, we picked Week 4 as Upset Saturday. Owls are dominated by upperclassmen. This is their chance to stun Penn State. In Beaver Stadium.
FLORIDA STATE (-19) over Wake Forest: Last four meetings have been won by the underdog and Wake has won its last two trips to Tallahassee. But the Demon Deacons have allowed
116 points in their last two games. Seminoles cruise.
ARKANSAS (+7) over Alabama: Alabama has won its last 18 SEC road openers and might make it 19, but not before Ryan Mallett slices and dices a young defense.
TEXAS (-15½) over Ucla: Bruins are 1-2, but their defense looked much better last week in win over Houston. They simply aren't physically deep or tough enough to hang with Longhorns, who lead the nation in rush defense.
Usc (-22) over WASHINGTON STATE: Trojans have yet to cover this season, but Cougars have lost 11 straight to BCS schools, surrendering 40 or more points in seven of those losses. Only win was 23-22 over FCS Montana State.
North Carolina (-2½) over RUTGERS: Tar Heels, 0-2, have better losses than Rutgers, 2-0, has quality wins.
CINCINNATI (+13½) over Oklahoma: No way the Sooners, with Texas on the horizon, are dialed in for this game in Paul Brown Stadium. First-year Cincinnati coach Butch Jones desperately needs the Bearcats, 1-2 out of the gate, to play well.
Kentucky (+14) over FLORIDA: No sane reason to pick the Wildcats, who haven't won in The Swamp since 1979, except the Gators usually have one let down per season at home and this is the perfect week for one. Florida is at 'Bama next week.
AUBURN (-3) over South Carolina: Tigers should be spent emotionally after that come-from-behind win over Clemson, but their fans remem ber that Gamecocks star fresh man RB Marcus Lattimore spurned Auburn for South Carolina.
Oregon State (+17½) over BOISE STATE: Broncos have won nine straight home openers, visit ing team is 0-4 in last four, and this crowd will be in a frenzy. But the Beavers' offense will put up points.
LSU (-9) over West Virginia: Mountaineers go to Baton Rouge feeling very good about a defense that smothered Maryland. Wait, this isn't Maryland, it's LSU, which has one of the nation's most explosive offenses.
California (+6½) over ARIZONA: Call this the Emotion Bowl. Bears are ornery after getting stun-gunned at Nevada last week. But the Wildcats are fat and happy after their upset of Iowa.
BEST BETS: USC, Kentucky, Oregon State.
LAST WEEK: 7-7-1 overall, 2-1 Best Bets.
