We set the stage for this one in this week’s edition of ”VERITIES & BALDERDASH”, when we once again went into detail about the remarkable run that Pat Fitzgerald continues to have in this category. But because it is still Northwestern, a program that lacks sex appeal, we do not see proper adjustments, and that means time to go to the well once again, especially with the injury to Dan Persa leading to a bigger adjustment than it should.

First, the Fitzgerald story. He took over at his alma mater under trying circumstances, and the Wildcats got off to a slow start in his first season. That can easily be excused. But once he began to get his system in play there has been a major turnaround – they are heading to a bowl for the third straight season. Because of the tenacity and tactics of the head coach it has been a sparkling 18-9 ATS run in the last 27 underdog settings, but in this case it goes far beyond that – in 13 of those games the Wildcats won the game outright, and two of the defeats came in O.T. in tough bowl losses to Auburn and Missouri. So the true bottom line is that in the last 27 underdog opportunities, Northwestern is an impressive 13-12-2 SU in regulation. And note that the deeper we get into the season the more impressive the count becomes – Fitzgerald and his team have been underdogs in November 13 times, and won the game outright on nine occasions. Two of the four games they did not win came vs. Ohio State, which is easily excused.

So fast forward to this week and what do we have? What has been the flat-out superior program (Northwestern is 34-26 under Fitzgerald; Illinois 26-44 in the Ron Zook years), taking more than a full TD on a neutral field that will actually favor their fan base slightly (the Wildcats were awarded more tickets to Wrigley because it is their season to host this rivalry game). And in the Fitzgerald/Zook head-to-heads it is a 3-1 SU and ATS run to Northwestern, beating the spread by 48.5 points over those games.

Yes, much of this line is because of the absence of Persa, who should get a lot of Big 10 MVP notice for the great season he was having. But there is a legit talent to replace him in 6-6/245 RS FR Evan Watkins, who possesses a much stronger arm, and while he lacks the quickness of the nimble Persa running the ball, he brings a power dimension (750 rushing yards and 15 TD’s in his two seasons as a high school starter, not all that far from where this game will be played at Glenbard North). He has the talent and the moxie to be trusted here, and makes it difficult for the Illinois defense to tactically prepare, since they can not be aware of the way that the offense will be tweaked to take advantage of Watkins’ arm strength. This is a defense that is showing clear signs of wearing down (two weeks ago Michigan’s offense had its #1 conference output for points and total yards, even without counting the O.T. periods; last week Minnesota produced #1 for points and #2 for yards in Big 10 play), and can be vulnerable in playing for the 8th straight week.

On Saturday the System Club Play is on Michigan. Game 334 at 12 noon eastern. The Line on this one has dropped for 6 to 4 during the week. Michigan has covered all 3 times as a home dog of 4 or more the past few years and are 18-1 straight up vs Wisconsin at home over the last 45 years! Wisconsin, obviously upset that they are the top ranked Big 10 play and not getting much attention, went and put over 80 points vs Indiana last week. That performance puts them in a negative situation here that plays against teams that scored 80 or more. These teams have lost 5 of the 7 times in their next game. The Badgers are a poor 1-6 ats as a road favorite vs certain winning teams. Both teams should have no problem scoring here as both offenses are super potent. We will side with history and a live home dog as our system club play this week. On Saturday I have yet another Huge College Football card led by the NCAAF Total of the year and the 22-1 Mountain West Conference highest rated game. I also have the Dog with bite that wins outright and has 6 angles that apply as well as the Ohio.St at Iowa Triple system TV Side winner. Also on the card is an 18-0 small school system side that dates to 1980. College football is cashing over 66% this year. NW will start FR QB Watkins, a 6'6" 250 Lb kid with decent mobility and a cannon for an arm, surely he will not fill the shoes of the playmaker and reliable Dan Persa, but HC Pat Fitzgerald raves about the FR and a wonderful opportunity to shine against an in conference state rival at neutral Wrigley Field. Illinois has fallen apart losing B2B games to Michigan and Minnesota. What happened to their defense? Even without Persa I made the line Illinois -4 and would play + a TD or more.

I watched the entire TCU-SDST game and I left impressed with the speed and heart of SDST. They did not give up down 40-14 and the running game flourished in the 2nd half vs TCU's No.#1 defense. RBs Hillman and Sullivan have extra gears and QB Lindley to WR Brown will score vs. anyone.

Utah after a bubble burst loss to TCU lost again, ugly to Notre Dame. This is not a good sign. We've read more than once this week that HC Whittingham is considering a change at QB and benching QB Jordan Wynn. Another bad sign. Now, they must travel in B2B road games and face an underrated SDST team that is a perfect 4-0 at home.

N Tex RB Dunbar ran for 226 yds LW and QB Dodge is leading his team down the field and this effort goes back two weeks ago when we saw NTex not throw in the towel vs Troy and play to the final whistle. ULM QB Browning who has been behind center all season was knocked out of the LSU game with an ankle injury and is highly questionable.

Prefer to lay than take the points in this SEC battle, simply because Miss St cannot match points with the Razorbacks and QB Ryan Mallet, who has found his stride each and every week as they put up 500+ yards. Mallet has done a tremendous job finding WRs (10 different LW) since their Top WR Greg Childs is out for the year with a knee injury.

We like the spot against Miss St, having played a very tough game LW vs Alabama and have arch rival Ole Miss on deck.

LSU can name the score here. Their defense will probably out score Ole Miss' offense, who managed just 14 points LW vs Tennessee, infact I project they will score 10 or less. QB Massoli still having headaches and threw 3 INTs early LW.

Rumours are that HC Rick Stockstill has lost control of his team. He certainly has MDTNST not focused on winning (L4 of L5) and they cannot go bowling in a Conference that normally only has one team, the Conference Champion in a Bowl. WKU won again LW and has put up solid numbers, wouldn't be surprised they pull the upset here.
