    10-31-08

    Jimmy The Moose
Game: Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers Oct 31 2008 10:35PM
    Prediction: over
Reason: Both team's opened the season by playing under the total but tonight they'll be involved in a high-scoring game. Denver has a very good offensive club with Iverson, Anthony and Martin in their starting 5 and expect all 3 to have a better game vs. a Clippers team that gave up 117 points in their opener. The Clippers led by Baron Davis now will score points tonight vs. a Nuggets team that isn't very good defensively. The team's have played over the total in 2 of their last 3 meetings. Play the over.

    Take "(706) MIAMI HEAT"
A lousy schedule to start the season for a young Sacramento team. In less than a year they've lost Mike Bibby and Ron Artest. The Kings started at Minnesota on Wednesday and didn't play any defense, allowing over 48% shooting in a 98-96 loss. And talk about a slow-footed frontcourt with Mikki Moore and Spencer Hawes. Center Brad Miller is serving a five-game suspension for violating the league's drug program and won't play here. Miami limps home after a loss at the Knicks, 120-115. This is a talented offensive team with Dwayne Wade, Shawn Marion, Udonis Haslem and rookie Mike Beasley. This is the home opener for the Heat while the visitors are a long way from home. Play Miami!

      (713) SAN ANTONIO SPURS

      Take "(713) SAN ANTONIO SPURS"
Get set for a monster weekend of FREE football plays! Check out the lineup. Conference Games of the Year in the WAC, Big 12 and Mountain West. My College Game of the Month. Plus, on the NFL side, my Big Shot Game of the Year and my Sunday Night Game of the Year on the Pats-Colts hookup. That's six high end plays, and they're all FREE at 1-800-231-5547!

The Spurs opened on a down note losing at home to Phoenix. Opening night was even worse for Portland. The Blazers got clubbed by the Lakers and lost Greg Oden for at least a couple weeks in the process. San Antonio has absolutely owned this series, winning each of the last dozen meetings. The Spurs are vulnerable right now with Ginobili sidelined. But they still enjoy a matchup advantage against the Blazers, and it's rather obvious that Portland has not yet figured out a way to beat this opponent. With the number where it is, I have to side with San Antonio to get the money tonight.

Analysis: TORONTO RAPTORS ? The Raptors, with a win at Philadelphia by a double digit margin, certainly showed that they aim to be a force to be reckoned with this season! Toronto now is all set for their home opener and this seems to be a much better set-up for a blowout so don?t be surprised when Toronto wins big once again. The Raptors are hosting the Warriors on Friday night. Although Golden State hung tough for the cover against the Hornets on Wednesday night, it was quite clear that New Orleans got caught looking ahead to their big showdown at Phoenix that was coming up on Thursday. This opened the door for the Warriors to keep that game much closer that it should have been. Toronto certainly will not handle this game in the same way! The Raptors next game is at Milwaukee and that means two things for Toronto: 1) This is a one-game homestand so make it count!; 2) The Raptors are not in a lookahead because Milwaukee was 26-56 last season! Toronto?s full focus and energy is definitely going into their home opener tonight. The Warriors got big games from Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson but Al Harrington struggled and this team is missing a key link with Baron Davis now playing for the Clippers! Raptors star Chris Bosh finally has some more help as Jermaine O?Neal is on board and looked strong in his Toronto debut. Jose Calderon is now the man at point guard for the Raptors after previously sharing duties with TJ Ford. Calderon already showed how positive this could be for him as he dished out seven assists and nailed three of five three pointers on Wednesday. Overall, the Raptors made 10 of 16 three points in Philadelphia and, on their home floor Friday, the shooters should absolutely stay hot. This one gets ugly as, unlike New Orleans, Toronto will be focused on putting away the Warriors once they have the big lead and that big lead should come early for the Raptors in their home opener.

Analysis: CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS ? In five games at home this season the Blackhawks have not suffered a loss in regulation. Keep in mind this including the time period before the coaching change with Joel Quenneville replacing Denis Savard. The Hawks suffered a loss at Minnesota in their most recent game but they had previously earned a point in six straight games before that defeat. Also, they?ve had three off days since the loss to the Wild and this has given them plenty of time to get re-focused and re-energized for this match-up with the Stars on Friday. Even though Dallas is starting to play better they are still very inconsistent. They?re coming off of a win over Minnesota but they previously had won just once in their last three games and they allowed 14 goals in those games! Goalie Marty Turco has struggled often for Dallas earlier this season and Tobias Stephan is still unproven as the 24 year old netminder has only made two career NHL starts. Dallas is talking about ?tightening things up? defensively on this road trip but that will be easier said than done in Chicago on Friday. The Blackhawks are a very talented offensive team. They had averaged 3.8 goals per game in their last five games before coming up short in their 3-2 loss to the Wild. The Blackhawks outshot Minnesota 36 to 18 in that loss so, as you can see, it certainly was an unfortunate defeat and a tough way for Chicago to see their points streak come to an end. They will start a new one tonight with a very focused and intense effort on home ice.

              Analysis:
The Portland Trailblazers landed into an absolutely terrible spot to start the 2008-09 season - playing on the road against what looks like the best team in the Western Conference by a mile (Los Angeles Lakers).

Portland fell way behind in that contest and was never in it - plus they lost rookie Greg Oden to injury, which simply added to the team's frustration. Let's not forget that the Blazers were a tremendous home team last year and didn't skip a beat without their 2007 top pick missing the entire year.

Which NBA team may resemble the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL this year.....you guessed it - the San Antonio Spurs. They look far from their dominant selves against Phoenix - allowing over 100 points at home. Last year - they were 0-4 ATS in this situation......plus....now they are a smallish road favorite against a Western Conference team.

The Spurs were a terrible 1-13 ATS when playing on the road against the West with the spread falling betweek +3 and -3.

Take the home dog as they re-establish themselves as a major player in the NBA.

              Analysis:
The Orlando Magic are incredible ATS when coming off a home loss, especially when heading out on the highway.

Orlando managed to hit just four three-point field goals in its loss to Atlanta just two days ago - ending a streak of 82 games with at least five field goals made from behind the arc.

That's a troublesome scenario for a Memphis team that shot 0-for-13 from beyond the arc in its opener against Houston.

When Memphis loses as an underdog - they also fail miserably ATS....Expect the Magic to bounce back in a big way tonight, as the middle will not be open for the Memphis Grizzlies due to the presence of center Dwight Howard.

Play on Toronto at 7:05 ET. Home opener for the Raptors as they come off an impressive 95-84 win in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Golden State looked better than we thought they would that same night hosting New Orleans, but that won't be the norm for the Warriors this year as their lack of a true team leader will hurt them all season. Soo too will their lack of a consistent inside threat. This is particularly true in going against what Toronto has to offer inside in Chris Bosh and Jermaine O'Neal. The duo combined for 34 points and 19 rebounds against the Sixers, and the most important thing is that O'Neal, who was acquired in the offseason, appears to be healthy. Golden State is using a point guard by committee right now and that won't get it done against the wildly underrated Jose Calderon. Warriors should be spent following an up-tempo 108-103 loss. For starters, they are just 10-22 ATS following a home game where both teams scored 100+ points. Now, they must make a cross-country flight all the way North of the Border. Stephen Jackson played 48 minutes in the opener, so he'll be tired. Al Harrington went just 5 fo 17 from the floor one day after being asked to be traded. Nellie's team is just a mess right now and is asking to get blown out. Toronto is 7-1 ATS after a road win in division play. Toronto is our NBA Non-Conference Game of the Month.

                    Knicks-76ers Under 217.5

Analysis: The total is jacked up too high as a reaction to the Knicks' 120-115 opening night win versus Miami. The Heat, though, play no defense.

The 76ers do play defense. They were seventh last year defensively, holding foes to 96.2 points per game. Samuel Dalembert is one of the league's better shot-blocking and rebounding centers.

Look for the 76ers to put out a much defensive effort, especially with their perimeter defense, after losing at home in their opener to the Raptors, 95-84. Toronto made 10-of-16 shots from past the arch.

The Knicks are an up-tempo team under new coach Mike D'Antoni. But they are going to experience some bumpy roads learning this new system.

                    Magic -6.5

Analysis: Look for the Magic to play very hard and effective in this matchup following their worst season-opening loss in franchise history at home to Atlanta.

The Magic had trouble with the athleticism of the Hawks. The Grizzlies don't have nearly that kind of athleticism or talent. They are a lunch pail type team and not a very good one.

Until shooting a miserable four-of-25 from 3-point range against Atlanta, the Magic had made at least five 3-pointers in 82 straight games. They should be able to get their perimeter game working against a slow Memphis club with a weak-scoring front line of Marc Gasol and Darko Milcic, both of whom will have their hands full with Dwight Howard.

The Magic should be very fired-up for this matchup. They were 27-14 on the road last season, tying for the second-most road victories

The Celtics won all four meetings with Chicago last season by at least 11 points, and I think that's exactly what will happen again tonight. Boston is 15-6 ATS in its last 21 home games and 7-1 ATS in its last eight games overall. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies played better than expected for most of their game at Houston before losing 82-71. In the last meeting at Memphis, Orlando crushed the Grizzlies, 112-85. Kevin Martin still finished with 17 points for Sacramento, and I think he bounces back with a much better shooting performance against a Miami team that played anything but defense in a loss to the Knicks on Wednesday. The Heat surrendered 120 points and allowed New York to set the pace. Look for Sacramento to stay close throughout and possibly pull off the upset as my Single Dime NBA Underdog Play O' the Day.

                          Analysis:

Both teams disappointed in the first game, especially Orlando who lost 85-99 at home against Atlanta. On the other side, Memphis only scored 71 points against the Rockets and one of the consequences of both bad performances is the totals line for this game: 190 points.

This line is clearly underrated, taking in account that both teams like to spread the floor and this will be a natural "run and gun" game, we can't only judge last games' performances, and the oddmakers looked too much for the first game of both teams.

Orlando struggled in the opener, only 85 points (13 and 15 in single quarters) and they scored only 4-25 3pts! We all know that this team is a jump shooting team and they struggled badly in the first game:

Van Gundy said: "The last good minute of the night was when they introduced the (former Magic players) from 20 years ago. And we played with the same amount of energy that those guys have."

"We didn't have a single guy who played well at both ends of the floor. And several guys were abysmal at both ends," he said.

In fact, eight minutes into the game, Orlando had already missed 11 of 14 shots and turned the ball over four times. And by the time the season was 10 minutes old, the Magic were already down 23-8 and hearing boos from the expectant crowd at Amway Arena.

Naturally this team will bounce back today, last season when they lost a game they went 26-8 ATS in the next game (12-4 away games) and I expect a better performance of Van Gundy's players.

Memphis lost 71-82 in Houston and they struggled against a hard and aggressive Rockets defense, we all know that this team is a jump shooting team and when they go 0-13 3pts in a game we can't expect a great outcome by them. Rudy Gay 9-22 FG and Mayo 5-20 FG struggled but the good news is that they won't face Ron Artest this time and the Magic haven't a powerful defense like Houston have.

Last season Orlando scored 123 and 112 points against the Grizzlies and it won't be difficult for team to repeat those numbers, Memphis didn't change their style of playing, they are still a run and gun team and Orlando will take advantage from this.

Last season Orlando went 6-2 Over in road games when the line was bellow 193 points and tonight facing a team who like to run and doesn't have good defense, the 190 points is too low for a typical run and gun game. Take the over in here.

                            Chicago / Boston
                            Play: 3* Chicago +9 1/2

Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference. Celtics are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 vs. NBA Central. Celtics are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 vs. Eastern Conference. I like going against the defending Champs usually in the beginning of the season. Lines will be inflated as the Celtics will be a public favorite team to bet. Chicago will keep this one a lot closer than most think and possibly get the upset. We'll play Chicago for 3 units tonight!
