          Hondo

The Twins got Hondo's day off to a sunny start yesterday, but it turned dismal last night when he stumbled with the Rays and Cardinals to raise the deficit to 1,385 cervs.

Today, Mr. Aitch is ready with Freddy against the Small Bears -- 10 units on the Yankees.

                  DAVID BANKS (comp)
Winner yesterday with the Under in San Francisco / Arizona

                  Detroit Tigers vs. Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies will hope a change in league opposition will help kick start their 2011 campaign when they welcome in the Detroit Tigers for Game 1 of their scheduled weekend Interleague series.

The Tigers sat tied atop the AL Central Division with the Cleveland Indians heading into the series finale on Thursday afternoon. After getting a dominating effort from Justin Verlander in the series opener, the Tigers were outslugged by the Tribe in Game 2 ultimately falling by a 6-4 final tally to fall to 37-31 ($408) overall for the year. If they are to win Thursday, manager Jimmy Leyland’s troops will have won four of their L/5 series played. Detroit’s excelled in Interleague play winning 65 of its L/97 contests but dropped its first series this season dropping two of three at PNC Park to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Colorado just hasn’t been able to find any traction the first two and a half months of its 2011 diamond campaign. The Rox enter Friday’s opener off a series home win against the San Diego Padres, but still sit two-games under .500 for the year (33-35) costing MLB bettors a whopping $1373 overall; the 3rd worst $$$ mark in the league! Coors Field used to be a place opposition went into to die, but that’s far from been the case to date with the Rockies only managing a 17-18 (-$1160) record in their own ballpark. Like Detroit, the Rockies have dominated Interleague play winning 20 of their L/29 overall and 50 of their L/69 games played at home.

These squads have opposed one another 18 times since the 2003 season, and it’s been the Rockies that have dominated tallying 11 victories. Recently however, Detroit’s won four of the L/6 with the last confrontation coming back in 2009; the ‘under’ is 5-1 during that stretch. The Tigers are 6-1 in Rick Porcello’s L/6 Interleague outings and a perfect 4-0 in their L/4 series openers. The Rockies counter with a 7-1 record the L/8 times Jason Hammel tossed at a +.500 opponent but they’ve failed to win each of his L/8 trips to the starting bump.

                  PICK: Detroit/Colorado UNDER

Friday’s Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                    STREAKING

Jason Marquis (7-2, 3.67 ERA), Washington Nationals

A suspension is about the only thing that can slow down Marquis these days. The veteran righty just served a five-game suspension for plunking Justin Upton back on June 5. He hasn’t pitched since holding the Padres to one run in six innings on June 10.

Washington backers will be happy to see Marquis back on the mound. The Nats are 6-1 in his last seven starts, despite being underdogs in six of those seven appearances. That’s why Marquis is No. 2 on Covers Top money pitchers list.

Mike Leake (6-2, 4.06 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Seems fitting that a klepto would be a steal at the betting window. Yes Mike Leake enjoys striking out major league hitters and smuggling American Rag T-Shirts out of Macy’s department stores.

The Reds are 4-0 in in Leake’s last four starts and the young hurler carries a 1.93 ERA over the hot stretch.

"Mainly my head is just back on straight a little bit," Leake told the Associated Press. "I think I lost it there for a little."

                    SLUMPING

Josh Tomlin (7-4, 4.14 ERA), Cleveland Indians

Maybe no other player embodies the Indians’ collapse than this starting pitcher. Tomlin hadn’t surrendered more than three in any of his first nine trips to the bump. It’s been a very different story since.

Tomlin 1-3 with a 8.61 ERA in his last four appearances. Gross.

Wade Davis (5-5, 4.81 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Kind of seems like we’re dumping on the American League on the first day of interleague here, doesn’t it? I mean, we could have easily subbed Houston’s Brett Myers in here.

Davis gets the dishonor though because of his tendency to give up the big fly. The big righty has been taken out of the park 10 times in his last six trips to the hill. The Rays are 1-5 during that stretch and the over is 4-0 in his last four starts.

                      Friday’s Best MLB Bets

Detroit Tigers at Colorado Rockies (-120, 9)

With Thursday’s 6-2 win over Cleveland, the Tigers overtook the Indians for first place in the AL Central division.

Detroit has now won 13 of its last 15 games and the club has its pitching staff to thank for many of those wins. Max Scherzer gave up two runs in the first inning but settled down after that to earn his ninth win of the season, tying for the MLB lead.

"Right now, we're playing pretty well. We're coming together," Scherzer told reporters. "But the thing is, we still have another 100. We have to grind it out and get these series wins."

The Tigers have won each of their last five series but have just one win in their last nine meetings with the Rockies.

“We’ve got a little something going,” manager Jim Leyland added. “But it’s such a long grind. I don’t get carried away.”

That sort of approach will serve them well. We think Detroit will keep its run going on Friday.

                      PICK: Tigers

San Diego Padres at Minnesota Twins (-130, 8)

On June 1, it looked like the Minnesota Twins might as well pack it in and start thinking about next season. A little over two weeks later, the outlook is a lot different.

Michael Cuddyer continued his great season with a solo homer in the second inning Thursday against the White Sox and that was all the support Nick Blackburn needed as the Twins picked up a 1-0 win. Cuddyer is now hitting .282 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs on the year.

"We're executing a lot better now," manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters. "We're getting bunts down. We're hitting and running. Guys are playing loose and not tight and not worried about making mistakes.

"When you start doing that and you get good pitching behind it and don't make the fundamental mistakes, everything kind of falls into place."

Plus, the club is getting Joe Mauer back on Friday and a host of other regulars shouldn’t be far behind him. Maybe the season isn’t lost yet for the Twins after all.

                      Pick: Twins

San Antonio Silver Stars at Phoenix Mercury (-5.5, 177)

So far, so good for the San Antonio Silver Stars, who head into this one as the league’s only unbeaten team both straight up and against the spread.

They hammered the Tulsa Shock in their first two games of the season and then upset Atlanta 86-74 on the road as a 2.5-point underdog last weekend. Rookie Danielle Adams had a lot to do with the club’s latest victory.

Adams put up 32 points off the bench and hit five 3-pointers to help San Antonio erase a seven-point deficit in the third quarter.

"Coach told me I had the green light so I'm going to take every open shot I get," Adams told reporters. “I was just feeling it tonight. I had the veterans there to back me up, so it was a pretty good feeling.”

The quick start has all of the Silver Stars feeling pretty good, but this will be a stiff test with Phoenix playing its home opener.

Still looks like too many points to us though.

                          PICK: San Antonio

                          Atlanta Dream at Minnesota Ly*x (-4.5, 164)

As long as Rebekkah Brunson keeps doing her thing, the Ly*x are going to be tempting bet on most nights.

Brunson is putting up 14.8 points and 14 rebounds per game in the early going this season and is coming off a dominant night in the team’s win at Seattle, notching 22 points and 14 boards.

"We use the word relentless with Brunson, and she takes great pride in that," Ly*x head coach Cheryl Reeve told the team’s official website. "She brings it every night she plays and hangs her hat on that. Her approach brings her a great deal of success and I'll tell you...players around the league...they don't want to matchup against her."

Atlanta will have its hands full on Friday. The Dream are giving up 84 points a night so far and are getting hammered on the glass so even though this line is up a bit from the open, we’ll still side with the Ly*x.

                          PICK: Minnesota

San Antonio Silver Stars at Phoenix Mercury (-5.5, 177)

It's been quite a contrasting start for the thriving San Antonio Silver Stars and stumbling Phoenix Mercury.

San Antonio looks to stay perfect and extend the best start in franchise history while Phoenix tries for its first victory Friday night in its 2011 home debut.

After beating Tulsa by an average of 25.5 points in their first two games of the season, the Silver Stars defeated Atlanta 86-74 on Saturday thanks largely to rookie Danielle Adams.

The 20th overall pick scored 32 points and helped San Antonio improve to 3-0 for the first time in the franchise's 15-year history.

"Coach told me I had the green light so I'm going to take every open shot I get," said Adams, who had scored a combined 16 points over her first two games.

While the Silver Stars remain the only undefeated team in the league, the Mercury (0-2) join Tulsa as the WNBA's only winless teams but also have played the fewest games.

Phoenix clearly has plenty of room for improvement but so do the Silver Stars, especially on the glass. San Antonio has been outrebounded 114-81 over its first three games, including 46-24 by the Dream.

"We weren't a very big team compared to the other teams that we played, but that necessarily doesn't say we can't rebound," said forward Sophia Young, grabbing just 3.7 boards per game despite a career average of 6.1. "We have to box out better and go pursue the ball better."

While trying to improve their rebounding, the Silver Stars also have another tough task at hand - slowing down the dangerous Diana Taurasi.

She scored a league season-high 31 points in a 78-71 loss at Seattle on June 4, but Taurasi was held to nine points on 2-of-9 shooting in Friday's 98-84 defeat at Los Angeles.

Taurasi averaged 24.3 points in the regular-season series with San Antonio in 2010, including a 39-point effort in a 108-105 loss June 18. Silver Stars guard Jia Perkins knows all too well how tough a cover the four-time All-Star can be.

"I think she brings her A-game every game and if not, she's a threat so you have to honor her whether she's on or off," Perkins said. "She's always going to be a threat on the court and we have to give her the respect she deserves."

The Mercury, who haven't opened 0-3 since losing their first four games in 2008, went 2-2 against the Silver Stars last season before sweeping them in the conference semifinals.

San Antonio center Jayne Appel might make her season debut Friday after sitting out the first three games with a left knee injury. She averaged 3.4 points and 2.5 rebounds in limited minutes last year.

Game: Indiana at Seattle (10:00 PM Eastern)
                              Pick: Seattle -6 (-110)

Year in and year out, Seattle comes to play, especially at home where they are now an amazing 51-6 straight-up in their last 57 regular season games played here. Better yet, the only two Eastern Conference teams to beat them have been Connecticut and Chicago over the 57-game stretch at home. The Fever have been a good team in recent years, but they are in a bad spot as they are just 3-7 ATS off an ATS loss and similarly, 3-7 ATS off two days rest. That raises double-jeopardy here for the Fever vs. a Seattle team that is tough to take down at home.
                              Play Seattle here.
