          SPORTS WAGERS

          Houston +140 over LOS ANGELES

Bud Norris has a 90+ BPV in the first, second, and third times he goes through lineups. This consistency bodes well for his development into one of the game's premium young pitchers and his sub-4.00 xERA confirms that his current 3.67 ERA is no fluke. In 88 innings, Norris has struck out 90 batters. In June he’s made three starts thus far and in 21 innings over that span he’s allowed 13 hits, six runs and struck out 17 for an ERA of 2.57 and a WHIP of 1.05. The Dodgers offense has been anemic all season at home (.627 OPS) and they’ve scored three times on the Astros in the first two games of this series. By contrast, the Astros have scored seven runs two games in a row here and will face Hiroki Kuroda. The Dodgers have lost Kuroda’s last five starts and they've lost seven if his last nine starts overall. In his last two starts at Chavez Ravine, Kuroda has allowed 17 hits and nine runs in 12 innings. Overall, the Dodgers have dropped five in a row and eight of their last 10 games. L.A. appears to be going through the motions lately, they’re now 10 games under .500 and they’re in an awful state of mind. Astros offer up great value here with their best hurler going. Play: Houston +140 (Risking 2 units).

          Detroit –1½ +129 over COLORADO

What Justin Verlander is doing right now is just plain sick. He’s dominating every line-up he faces and over his last two starts he’s struck out 22 batters while walking two. Verlander’s BAA is .185 and he’s struck out 105 batters overall in 111 frames. The Tigers have lost once in Verlander’s last eight starts and that lone loss was against the Red Sox, 4-3. Verlander got a no-decision. Overall, he has a 0.89 WHIP but in three June starts that WHIP is even lower at 0.68. The man is putting up Koufax-like numbers and his mound opponent is an old stiff that can’t throw strikes consistently anymore and can’t do much of anything else either. Aaron Cook has made two starts since coming off the DL but starts were against the Padres. In 11.1 innings Cook walked six, gave up 11 hits and five runs and struck out six. That was against the worst offense in the league. Against the Tigers he has two chances for success, slim and none. His skills have always been suspect, especially his low strikeout rate. In prior years he always managed to limit the damage and escape several jams each game. Those days are gone and Cook is a guy you should always be looking to wager against because the absolute only reason the Rocks are using him is because they have to pay him 10M this season. Play: Detroit –1½ +129 (Risking 2 units).

TAMPA BAY –1½ +117 over Florida

Losing takes its toll big time and right now the Marlins can’t find a single win nor can they find a place to run and hide. The Marlins have one win in 18 games. They’ve lost nine in a row and only one of those losses were by a single run. They’re getting beaten up on a daily basis and that makes coming to the park near intolerable. The Fish will have to face James Shields here and Shields is coming off one of the most dominating performances of the year by anyone when he threw a complete game, five-hit shutout against the then scorching bats of the Red Sox. Shields has always been a skilled pitcher. Yet his 2010 stats failed to reflect his skills. So far in 2011, the stats and skills are more closely aligned, as Shields has an outstanding strikeout rate, a GB tilt and elite command. It’s no mystery as to why his ERA is 2.60. At the Trop, Shields’ ERA is 1.99. For the Marlins, Chris Volstad is 2-7 with an ERA of 6.07. On the road he’s 0-3 with an ERA of 8.57. The Marlins have lost Volstad’s last four starts and over that stretch have been outscored 30-9. In the frame of mind that the Marlins are in, they know they’re going to lose this one before they even step between the lines and they’re right. Play: Tampa Bay –1½ +117 (Risking 2 units).
