Edmonton –1 over WINNIPEG Pinnacle
The Eskies are now 5-0 after pulling one out against the Argos last week and that close call might have awoken them for this week. Not that they’ve been sleeping but they did have an off game against the Argos so it’ll be interesting to see how they respond. Still, Edmonton is undefeated and after a subpar effort a week ago one has to figure them to come out with a lot more intensity here. Ricky Ray has been near flawless and has thrown just one interception. Winnipeg is all about defense. They lead the league in QB sacks by a wide margin with 21 thus far and Ray and the Eskies O-line will face its biggest challenge to date against the fiercest pass rush in the league. However, there’s a price to pay for that. Early on, the Bombers were allowing just 80 yards on the ground per contest. After five games, the numbers have gone up to 104 yards a game and 5.4 yards a carry. Offences are taking advantage of the Bombers' furious pass rush by running the ball right past it. Another problem for the Bombers is an offense that scores field goals instead of touchdowns and that has more two-and-outs than anyone. Now here’s the real kicker for this game. The Bombers are 4-1 after a hugely emotional win last week following the death of beloved assistant coach Richard Harris. For anyone that saw it live or watched it on TV, it was a game that they will not soon forget. The Bombers played on pure raw emotion. One reporter said this about the Bombers,” Ten days after Harris' sudden death, the wound is still present, albeit in a much more evolved form. The time to digest the loss has started and a noticeable peace around the team has settled in -- which could signal a letdown”. Football is an emotional game and that observation by the Bombers beat reporter is something we’re not going to ignore. Play: Edmonton –1 (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).
Saskatchewan +3 +107 over B.C. LIONS Pinnacle
The Lions figure to get off the mattress at some point but until they do there is no way we’re willing to lay points with them. They can’t seem to generate anything with a revolving door of receivers that continue to drop pass after pass after pass. In response, B.C. goes out and trades for Arland Bruce and while he has talent he’s been a cancer to every team he’s played for in much the same way as Terrell Owens of the NFL. The Lions are a team in disarray and each week it’s getting worse. The Riders are close to turning this season around. They have a huge weapon in kicker Eddie Johnson who continues to put the opposition in horrible field position with his booming kicks. The Riders are just 1-4 but team morale is not low at all and you can see that in the way they play every single down. The Roughies have lots of talent at the key positions and were in a position to beat the Stamps last week but once again fell short. The Lions morale is low. Wally Buono’s job is in jeopardy and one really has to wonder how the players feel about bringing on Arland Bruce, a guy with a big mouth and not a whole lot more. In any event, laying points with the Lions right now cannot be recommended. Play: Saskatchewan +3 +107 (No bets).
3 Unit Play Take #906 NY Mets +113 over Atlanta (7:10pm est):
The Atlanta Braves come into this a lot less than 100% health wise. They are missing two big pieces on offense and a possible third entering this game. The Braves are already an average offense at best when everyone is healthy and surely drop off a level with those guys out of their lineup. Tim Hudson gets the call here tonight for Atlanta. Hudson has always been a guy who pitches much better at home than on the road as his home/road ERA sits a run lower the last four years.
The New York Mets continue to hover around the .500 mark this year. They were rolling along at four games above .500 before dropping their last four contests. Finally healthy, the Mets offense has played a lot better with everyone back in the lineup. They come in averaging over five runs per game since David Wright returned to the club two weeks ago. With Wright in the lineup, the Mets have a formidable offense that ranks in the top ten in baseball against right-hand pitching.
The Mets go with starter R.A Dickey here tonight. Dickey has been quietly one of the most consistent starting pitchers in baseball the last few months. He has fourteen straight starts allowing four runs or less and has a 60-20 strikeout to walk ratio his last 12 starts.
Getting the Mets and Dickey at home against a injured Braves team at a dog price is solid value. Take New York here.
San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Play: San Diego Padres
The Pirates surprised everyone with their play this season, and hung in the NL Central race right up to the All-Star break. They have really been exposed of late and are finding ways to lose. That includes putting up a 6-run inning last night vs. these same Padres, then losing the game anyway for their seventh straight loss. The Pirates are now just 3-12 in their last 15 games. Their once solid pitching has allowed 47 runs in their last seven games, for almost 7 per contest. The Padres have done a better job on the road this season than at home, and that margin is stronger behind Harang who has led them to a 6-1 mark in his last seven road starts. The Pirates are an ugly 8-21 behind Karstens when they allowed 5 in their previous game. Take San Diego here.
