        Pucking Hockey

        Philadelphia Flyers @ Boston Bruins – 10/6 – 7:00 pm est

To start off the 2011-2012 NHL Season here at Pucking Hockey we will be breaking down the first game of the season between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins.

In the 2010 NHL playoffs, the Bruins found themselves up 3-0 in the semi finals of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Philadelphia Flyers. But suddenly the Bruins choked, and allowed the Flyers to win the series 4-3, which eventually led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals, but falling short to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Now in the 2011 NHL playoffs, the Bruins once again had to face the Flyers in the semi finals of the Stanley Cup Finals, but this time they seeked revenge, and conquered. They completely embarrassed the Flyers, out hitting them, out shooting, out scoring, pretty much dominating them, and sweeping the Flyers in four games.
One of the main problems the Flyers lack last year in the playoffs was goaltending, and leadership. But with many off season moves, the Flyers are a new team with the same goal.

Ilya Bryzgalov will start for the Flyers and Tim Thomas will be in net for the Bruins.

Between the two goalies, the first thing that comes to mind is, a very low scoring game, but there is a reason why bookmakers set the line at 5.5 and not 5 total goals in the game. They expect, just like we do here at Pucking Hockey, a high scoring game or even a tight scoring game, with a late empty net goal to push the game over 5.5 total goals.

The first game between the two rivals, who have significant history of over’s. The total has gone OVER in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 5 games when playing on the road against Boston. You have no choice but to take the over 5.5 total goals in this game. Even if the Bruins suffer a Stanley Cup hangover and fail to produce at least two goals, the Flyers will have revenge in their blood seeking at least 6 goals themselves.

5* Philadelphia Flyers vs Boston Bruins OVER 5.5

        Other picks for the day.

1* Montreal Canadiens vs Toronto Maple Leafs UNDER 5.5

1* Pittsburgh Penguins vs Vancouver Canucks OVER 5.5

5-Unit Play. Take Florida Panthers 'UNDER' 35.5 Season Wins
The Panthers finished the 2010 season with 30 wins and they are being asked to improve in 2011 by a full six wins. That looks like a tall task. Florida has overturned their roster, bringing in mostly youth on the blue line and up front as they try to rebuild. The exception was adding 35-year-old defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who returns to the scene of the start of his career. The thing about the Panthers is they have a lot of new parts to this team, including Head Coach Kevin Dineen. Dineen is installing a new system, which is going to take some time to adjust to, and this team doesn't have a solid goalie to bail out their young, inexperienced back line. I do think the fact that Florida has started to overturn their roster is a good thing. But this process is going to take time and patience and I just don't see this team actually improving on last year’s small win total. Thursday is Opening Night and we'll be back with more action. We had an unbelievable year last year and I am hoping that we can pick up where we left off. We will have our 5-Unit Game of the Week on Thursday and would love to get off to a sharp start.

              Sports Wagers NHL

Philadelphia +138 over BOSTON (REG) Pinnacle
Everyone will be gunning for the Bruins this year and the Flyers will be leading the charge, as they were swept in last year's playoffs by these Bruins. Boston is tough but there's always the inevitable Stanley Cup hangover and the mental attitude of “we don't have to prove anything”. Boston has virtually the same team as last year with only Michael Ryder, Tomas Kaberle and Mark Recchi leaving. The Bruins did add Joe Corvo, who is one year too late. Tim Thomas had a miraculous year but don't expect that again. This guy is lucky and very beatable and we love the fact that he's starting tonight. Philly has plenty to prove and they did a complete overhaul. The Flyers acquired Ilya Bryzgalov to handle its always problematic goaltending issues. Not sure if he's the answer but starting on the road is a good thing. The Flyers have two guys in James Van Riemsdyk and Glaude Giroux that are on the verge of becoming one of the deadliest duo's in the league. They added more strength up front, they signed Jaromir Jagr and picked up Wayne Simmonds, Jakub Voracek and Brayden Schenn in the Carter/Richards deal. No team altered its roster as radically as the Flyers did this offseason, and although the statistical projections penalize Philly for offloading Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, they're a new team with a new look and absolutely have a great shot to win its opener. Play Philadelphia +138 (Risking 2 units).

Pittsburgh +138 over VANCOUVER (REG) Pinnacle
Let's forget about Sidney Crosby for a moment. If and when he comes back the Pens will be that much better. For now, he's not playing. The Pens are still strong at center with Evgeni Malkin, Mark Letustu and Jordan Staal. James Neal could have a huge year. On defense, the Penguins can move the puck out better than anyone. This team is loaded with talent behind the blueline and up front they're solid too. The Canucks are always good. They really didn't make too many changes in the off-season but one really has to wonder how they'll be affected by last year's miss. The Canucks' final games last season raised plenty of questions about the team's toughness, both mental and otherwise and we'll have to see how they come out of the gate before we'll really know. What we do know is that the Penguins will be one of the toughest outs all year and after this game and unless something goes terribly wrong, you won't a tag like this one many times on them for the remainder of the year. Penguins don't have many weaknesses. Play Pittsburgh +138 (Risking 2 units).

                California at Oregon
                Pick: California+24.5

This one might be a tough sell as the Ducks have rebounded nicely since their opening week loss to now #1 LSU 40-27 a game where they out-gained the Tigers by almost a hundred yards. California like the Ducks had last week off and they are itching to play after a pounding in Washington, the Bears have covered 4 of the last 5 in this series and lead it overall 39-32 with two ties. Oregon was held to season lows in first downs and total yards in this match-up last year and Cal can keep it close.

                  THE DUKE SPORTS

                  California (+24) for 1.5 Units

California's been very competitive in this series covering 4 of the last 5; as a matter of fact, 8 of the last 11 in this series has been decided by 10 or less. Sure, Oregon's offense has
heated up since their loss to LSU in week 1; however, we believe California will once again be very competitive. Their defense, ranked 9th nationally, plays the run well and has good closing speed and depth in the secondary -- a requisite in controlling the Oregon offense. In addition, Cal QB Zach Maynard is doing a nice job running the 'Bears offense (39' ppg). California is a sweet 20-6-1 as a dog of 10'+ and 16-5 ATS as a road dog of 10'+. California the call.
