Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 2, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XX
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Delightful Terror (7/2)-Makes the 4th start off the bench and this time goes from post 8 to the rail. The Corey Stratton trainee drops again, and the brother's team up for the 1st time since returning to action. Best to respect chances versus this crew and comes back quickly this time which is unlike the other starts since returning.
5-Gamblingterror (2-1)-This is the 2nd race since dropping to this level. Brent Holland takes the lines tonight and the positive driver change could make a winning difference. Expecting an aggressive drive once the wings fold.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-Down The Pike Mike (2-1)-As is the case for this sequence in general, this is a formless race. Not going to look further than a logical play with Jason Bartlett from the rail. Put in an even effort at Tioga on 7-27 in the 1st race since 11-3-2023. The 5-year-old does decent work at Yonkers (29-5-4-4) and the Jenny Melander barn has been clicking in the past 30 days. Comes back quickly and meets a soft bunch.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-Bri Express N (5/2)-Faced this kind on 7-5, got on the engine from the 2-hole and faded down the lane to finished 2nd. That was on a "good" track, is 0-5 on a wet surface and has hit the board only once. George Brennan steered then and will be between the pipes tonight. Could get on the point and not look back.
4-Onederfulbeach (3-1)-Makes the 4th start since joining the Stratton barn and raced from the back in last after drawing post 8. Stayed inside after starting way back and paced the back half in 55.2. Could be sitting on a big try and should be a fair price.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

6-Rocknroll Annie (10-1)-The veteran mare raced well to just miss leaving from post 7 versus this kind. Bartlett will probably be aggressive when the wings fold. Could land on the point or in the pocket and either trip could lead to a picture.
7-Racy Roxy A (6-1)-Comes off even efforts versus better but this looks like a wake-up spot. Jordan Stratton sticks may have met a beatable field and should offer a square price.

    2.00 Pick 4

    1,5/1/1,4/6,7
    Total Bet=$16

Scott Shapiro: Friday Saratoga Stakes Analysis

      August 1, 2024 | By 1/ST BET

Saturday is one of the biggest days of the meet at Saratoga with four graded stakes races on the agenda headlined by the $1M Whitney (G1), but do not snooze on Friday afternoon’s 10-race card that includes a pair of graded stakes events for 3YOs on the lawn. Here are my thoughts on the Saratoga Oaks (G2) and the Hall of Fame (G2).

      Race 8: Saratoga Oaks (G2)

Charles Appleby and William Buick won this event in 2022 when With The Moonlight stalked early and pulled away late as the even-money favorite. They hold a strong hand again in 2024 with 6-5-favorite #1 Cinderella’s Dream. The British-bred filly made quite an impression in her first start in the States overcoming an unfavorable race shape when running down pacesetter Segesta (who Chad Brown announced earlier in the week will be scratched due to a bruised foot) and heavy favorite #7 She Feels Pretty in the Belmont Oaks (G1). The only blemish on her resume is a fifth-place finish in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket in May. She stands out against this group.

For those searching for an alternative to the likely odds-on favorite, it is hard to make a case for any of the fillies based in the States and nearly as difficult to make one for European import, #5 Greenfinch. Trainer Aidan O’Brien ships this Justify filly in from Ireland after finally earning her first career victory over the lawn. Her inability to handle Grade 3 competition in Ireland is concerning, as is the fact that O’Brien has not sent a filly over for this race the last several years after finishing second in the inaugural edition with Happen. It simply does not seem like a priority for one of the world’s top conditioners. Greenfinch earned that first grass victory in frontrunning fashion last month and could keep #4 Macanga honest in the early going, but I do not expect her to get the best of Cinderella’s Dream regardless of trip.

      Pick- Cinderella’s Dream

      Play: Daily Double 1-3

Race 9: Hall of Fame (G2)

The pace is likely to be honest in this year’s Hall of Fame (G2) given the presence of #8 Barksdale. The Street Sense gelding ships back to New York after battling early and tiring late in a stakes event washed off the grass at Ellis Park on the Fourth of July. The William Walden trainee has been better in his one-turn events thus far and looks up against it on paper, but his lone two-turn starts did come early on his career before he seemingly turned a corner. Expect the top three horses on the morning line #3 Zverev, #4 Neat, and #8 Army Officer to be amongst those in the second tier hoping to get first run. Like most two-turn events on the lawn, trip is likely to decide the race.

Neat might be the likeliest winner coming off a workmanlike victory in the Manila (G3) but I am not sure he stands out enough to invest in as the chalk. Army Officer is also a potential underlay as he hopes to earn back-to-back victories over this turf course after getting the job done as the 5-2-favorite during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival in June. He should get the right trip under Frankie Dettori but has never struck me as one of Brad Cox’s best.

Zverev intrigues the most. The Cherie DeVaux makes his third start of the form cycle after getting the best of West Hollywood in the lane back in Louisville on June 20. The effort was a huge step forward for the Oscar Performance colt and it looks even better after West Hollywood’s off the pace victory last Saturday. I have little reason to believe he will not run another big race for a barn that is 4 for 14 to start the meet with nine of those runners hitting the board.

Zverev is my top choice and a potential Win bet at 7-2 or higher. I will tie him up with #2 Buttercream Babe. The Three Diamonds Farm filly was beaten by a 36-1 long shot in his last at Horseshoe Indianapolis but that winner was loose on the lead while this Mike Maker trainee was never overly comfortable. The son of Twirling Candy appears to be moving in the right direction and the fact he has a win over this course earlier this year and attracts Irad Ortiz Jr adds to the appeal.

      Pick: Zverev

      Plays: Win 3 & Exacta 3-2

Let’s build a bankroll for a huge weekend of racing! Good luck!

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Del Mar - Race #4
#1 Mizzyaan She had the misfortune of catching the same really good winner in both of her first two starts, and I wonder if she might end up being a decent fit with this crew today.
#10 She's No Angel Nothing from her yet through two starts, but she gets blinkers for her local debut and might have enough upside to be useful at a nice price today.
#8 Normandy Queen She's supposed to be a big player here if she can build on the solid debut run, and the move around two turns might allow her to do just that.
Race Summary Mizzyaan has company lines that tower over most of these, so I'm willing to give her the nod while getting Lasix for this third lifetime start. Big chance while back with friends.
        Del Mar - Race #6
#13 Shady Tiger Price isn't going to be much, but he's supposed to handle this group if he holds his form. Tactical pace should get a perfect trip while spying a few of the speedier pace players early on. Baseline should do.
#12 Capo Luigi Think he could end up getting a pretty similar trip to the top choice, and I think his dirt form is a bit better than it looks at first glance. Could play at an OK price.
#4 Final Storm He's not the worst alternative if you want to stand against the pick. He was in the picture with him on a couple occasions and has some obvious room to bounce back today while getting away from Los Al where he has run a couple of the worst races of his career.
Race Summary Shady Tiger has been super honest, and he figures to find another great spot even from this wide draw. Maybe Capo Luigi is the right price to make the gimmicks a little interesting?
        Del Mar - Race #8
#6 Hollywood Penny There isn't a ton of confirmed finishing punch in this one, and her one-paced turf tries might translate well while getting on the main track today. Think there is a decent bit to like today.
#11 Moonlight Tryst She's probably the one to beat on the drop while getting back to the main track, but the price probably isn't going to be much with at least a little question to answer about the drop with a sharp main-track special weight try on her page from the debut.
#7 Bajan Bashert She's another who makes some sense while getting in for a tag for the first time, and she has never run a bad one going short. Might wind up in the right kind of spot. Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone landing here.
Race Summary Hollywood Penny might wake up while turning back today, and she might be a decent enough price while getting in with this kind of company for the first time.

              # 2 GHOSTLY GAL 5/2
MISS DELICIOUS has a very strong shot to take this race. She has been running quite well and the speed figures are among the most respectable in this field. Last time out, this mare faced a much tougher field. Has a strong shot in here if you like back class. STELLA MARS - Solid average speed figures in dirt route races make this pony a contender. Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last outing. GHOSTLY GAL - With a nice class rating average of 94, has one of the most competitive class advantages in this group. Curtis has recent ROI figures which make this horse a strong bet.

                #5 RISING STRONG (ML=5/1)
                #2 MONOPOLIZE (ML=3/1)
                #1 MISS MCBRIDE (ML=8/1)

RISING STRONG - Prescod is right back for another race today after sitting atop this horse for the first ride on Jul 19th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This filly is in superb physical condition right now. Finished third last time out and comes back promptly. MONOPOLIZE - Malveaz comes to race again after getting to know the filly in the last race. I like to wager on this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp outing within the last month. Horse has improved at least two speed figure points in last 2 races. I look for that to continue its positive trend today. MISS MCBRIDE - Anderson seems to have this mare primed for a big effort. Her workout pattern is super.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 HIGHER IMAGE (ML=2/1), #3 BROKEN PROMISES (ML=7/2),

HIGHER IMAGE - Should have at least hit the board in the last couple of months in a short distance event to be any kind of value at low odds in a sprint. BROKEN PROMISES - No pace in this group to help set-up her late kick.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - RISING STRONG - The TrackMaster Power Rating tells me that this horse looks good versus the rest of this field. I'm wagering.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 RISING STRONG on the nose if you can get odds of 7/2 or more

                  Belterra Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:35pm - Maiden Special - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,200 Class Rating: 52

                  Rating:

                  #3 LESOTHO (ML=2/1)

LESOTHO - Have to make this filly a strong challenger; she comes off a good race on July 3rd. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a come back. Trainer Cline moves this horse down the ladder based on class rating points to face a less competitive field. Look for a strong effort this time out. This horse has the speed, and no one may be able to keep up with her. The improved Equibase speed figs over the last 3 races is solid. Cline drops her in this affair ready to go. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per race. This entrant has the highest in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish line.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SHAMANS IMAGE (ML=3/1), #5 LIGHTNING MELODY (ML=7/2), #2 JUBILEE BEN PLAYIN (ML=4/1),

SHAMANS IMAGE - Not likely that the fig she recorded on July 20th will be enough in this event. LIGHTNING MELODY - The Brain cautions me to stay away from thoroughbreds in sprint events that haven't hit the board in sprint contests of late. JUBILEE BEN PLAYIN - Difficult to bet on any mount in a sprint race if she hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple of months. Hasn't been close at all of late.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - LESOTHO - Having the best speed fig last race of 53 at Belterra Park on July 3rd. This filly has an excellent chance to win here.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 LESOTHO to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

                    # 2 MYSARIA 10/1
I like SANTAGATA here. Might go off at a solid price and has some positive angles going for her. Has posted reliable Equibase Speed Figs in dirt sprint races in the past. Carmouche has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 16 percent rate. FOXY CARA - Her 69 average has this filly with among the strongest Equibase Speed Figures for this race. Earned a quite good Equibase Speed Figure last time out. MYSARIA - Well above average win rate at this distance/surface. Looks very strong against this field and will almost certainly be one of the front-runners.

                          Woodbine - Race #2 - Post: 1:37pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,400 Class Rating: 67

                          Rating:

                          #4 JACK (ML=3/1)

                          #9 SWERVIN MERVYN (ML=8/1)

JACK - When the real running starts, this gelding should be finishing best of all. Ranks at the top in earnings per start. A strong try right here in this race can add to the lifetime bankroll. SING DIXIE - I undeniably see favorable signs for this mount right here. SWERVIN MERVYN - It looks like Moran had to be more familiar with this gelding on July 12th when riding him for the initial time. Back on board again today.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #5 FOREST FLASH (ML=4/1), #3 SOUPER ICONIC (ML=5/1), #1 SPARKLET (ML=6/1),

FOREST FLASH - Today's affair is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a sprint race in the last sixty days. Not the greatest of signs. SOUPER ICONIC - Never really did much at all last out on July 19th. Hard to bet on in today's race. Any horse coming out of a route race should show some speed to battle with the sprinters. SPARKLET - Not normally the kind of animal one plays off of any kind of long layoff.

I've got to go with BARLEEWON and the potential return justifies the dangerous nature of the long odds. Has very strong speed figures and has to be considered for a bet in this race. A solid 92 avg Equibase class figure may give this gelding a distinct class edge against this group. He has put up competitive numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well versus this group. KODAPENDENT - The handler wheels this horse right back to race again. He has put up solid numbers under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this field. PRATT - Ought to be carefully examined - I like the numbers from the last race. Might best this field here, showing formidable figs of late.

DIEGO VELAZQUEZ (IRE) is my choice. Have to examine solely on class, with some of the best class figures of this group of horses in this race. Has to be carefully examined against this group of horses displaying formidable figures recently and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 118 under similar conditions. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this horse look very good in this contest. WHITE PALOMINO - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Brown have shown strong results recently. Has to be given consideration - I like the figures from the last outing. LEGEND OF TIME (GB) - Earnings per start in turf route races is reliable for this animal. Has raced very well in turf route races.
